Tom Riley: Capaldi Will “Completely Revitalise” Doctor Who
Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Series 8 guest star Tom Riley thinks new Doctor Peter Capaldi will “completely revitalise” Doctor Who when the show returns later this year.
Speaking to Flicks and the City at the BAFTA Craft Awards, Riley said we can expect a “change of tone” in the next run of episodes.
Riley, strongly fancied to be playing Robin Hood in a Mark Gatiss penned story, reckons Capaldi will “smash it” when he takes over the role. Although understandably secretive about what we can expect from the story, the Da Vinci’s Demons star promises a “really fun episode”.
He’s careful to stress that he doesn’t feel the programme needed revitalising, but it’s an interesting thought. Following the roaring success of the programme’s 50th anniversary celebrations it could hardly be said to be in need of a lift. But comments by Steven Moffat and other members of the production team in recent interviews have hinted at a new direction in the next series, indicating they felt the need to shake things up.
What do you think? Was Doctor Who getting a bit comfortable? Has change come not a moment too soon?

Arthur Darvill Wants You To “Let It Go”

Are you one of those fans who spot Arthur Darvill in the street or pub and call him “Rory”? Or worse still, “that bloke off Doctor Who“?
Recorded for the Matt Edmondson Show on BBC Radio 1, here’s Arthur singing ‘The Ballad Of Arthur Darvill’, to the tune of Disney hit Frozen‘s ‘Let It Go’. Let’s hope he doesn’t resent the recognition *too much*…
Seriously, this is a nice tribute, with mentions of his co-stars and other appearances, including his lead role in Once, currently enjoying a run in the West End!

In this gem from the British Pathé news archive recently uploaded to YouTube, the team from the radio show Merry Go Round – including Jon Pertwee – arrive at the Radiolympia (Radio Olympia) exhibition in 1947. They pull up outside in an open veteran car which stops with a jolt, making them all nearly fall out. A crowd of people watch from the street.
Accompanying future Doctor Who star Jon Pertwee is actor Eric Barker, Barbara Sumner, Humphrey Lestoq, Pearl Hackney (Barker’s ‘secretary’) and George Crow.
Watch out for more relevant clips from the archive later!

Matt Smith Won’t Be In Sherlock Any Time Soon
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
We’ve heard recently that Benedict Cumberbatch has ruled out any future appearance in Doctor Who, either as Time Lord lead or as a guest. Well, it seems that Matt Smith isn’t going to be in Sherlock either, scrapping the dreams of many fans desperate to see a Moff-over.
(Although let’s face it: with Matt no longer the Doctor it was never going to happen, was it?)
Fans at the Wizard World Con recall that Matt insisted he wouldn’t be sharing a screen with Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
Listen, there’s no room for me on Sherlock! They’ve got Benedict and Martin, that’s quite enough peculiar Englishmen for that show. There’s no room for another.
In fairness, Sherlock also has Mark Gatiss, adding a third oddball Brit to proceedings.
Steven Moffat has previously indicated that Matt Smith might find himself in Sherlock - should a suitable role come along.
But let’s face it, Matt Smith doesn’t need Sherlock – he can go on to bigger and better things, can’t he?

Our Favourite Doctor Who Scenes Re-enacted By Fans
James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
We all know the Doctor is loved and thanks to the hard work of the various talents over at BBC Wales the show is now loved across the globe by a whole new generation of fans.
A few weeks ago, UK-based TV drama and comedy website, Cultbox revealed the results of their quest to find favourite scenes recreated by Doctor Who fans to celebrate 50 years, which we featured at the time.
However, I wanted to share with you some of my favourites from the video.
The response was fantastic with hundreds of responses from over 30 countries. The end result is an eclectic compilation of everything from a straightforward line-to-camera to elaborate recreations replete with a CGI dinosaur…
Be prepared for the awkward, the enthusiasm-oozing amateur and the pretty impressive. But most of all this collection shows just how much our show inspires and motivates people of all ages, all backgrounds and nationalities. And while it makes me glad we have consummate professionals in charge of Who, I absolutely bloody love this video. There’s so much love packed into these 9 minutes. These are our people!
Everything from the First Doctor to the Eleventh features including one particularly competent “Allons-y!” from our very own Brian A Terranova (head over to the PodKast section to hear his latest musings with James McLean on all things Cyberform).
At 59s my absolute favourite is a series of three youngsters (at least they’re all younger than yours truly) delivering the Tenth Doctor’s “I’m a Time Lord” speech from 2007’s Voyage of the Damned ending with a frank yet fierce, “you got a problem with that?” Chills, guys. Gave me chills.
At 2m16s an even more youthful Clara and Eleventh Doctor deliver more romance in a few seconds than we get in the average 45 minutes! Other gems include; the First Doctor’s farewell to Susan (The Dalek Invasion of Earth, 1964), the Third Doctor’s speech on courage (Planet of the Daleks, 1973), the Eleventh Doctor’s speech on what you don’t put in a trap (Time of the Angels, 2010), “Ignorance is Carlisle” (Hide, 2013), the Fourth Doctor’s “indomitable” speech (Ark in Space, 1975), the impossible girl montage (Name of the Doctor, 2013) various lines between Daleks and Cybermen and unexpectedly Kinda’s (1982) “you can’t mend people” line makes an appearance.
Strong work. Enjoy…
I’ll always love William Hartnell’s performance as he says goodbye to the Doctor’s Grandaughter but it’s a close call between that and Sylvester McCoy’s “end my life” speech from Happiness Patrol, 1988.
So, Kasterborites what are your favourite, most spine-tingling moments of Doctor Who‘s 50 years? Tell us what and why below…

Leela Visits Beccles For An Evening Of Chat!
Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Fancy spending an evening in Leela’s company? If you’re in Suffolk next Friday you can do just that as Louise Jameson heads to Beccles for an evening of conversation about her career.
Louise will be appearing at The Waveney Centre at 18:00 on May 2nd 2014 for An Audience with Louise Jameson.
It’s a safe bet that Doctor Who is sure to come up, of course, but Louise will also find time to talk about some of her other roles on screen, stage and audio.
A former student at RADA, Louise has a proud back catalogue of stage roles including in Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew and King Lear. On television, apart from playing Leela of the Sevateem, her other credits include Tenko, Bergerac and Eastenders.
Louise can currently be heard as Leela again in the latest Big Finish series of Fourth Doctor adventures, and will soon be on a theatre tour playing Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple in A Murder is Announced.
Tickets for An Audience with Louise Jameson cost £10 and are available from Kulture Shock, Blyburgate, or from The Waveney Centre.

Just Turned 41? You Could Be The Next Doctor!
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
The Radio Times has spent a vast amount of time working out something a little pointless but also kinda fun.
They worked out that if you turned 41 on Thursday 17th April 2014, you might just be the Thirteenth Doctor! It’s a big “might,” however. Big.
How did they work this out? Well, they averaged out the age of the Doctors and figured out that 44 is the age to be a Time Lord. Next, they grabbed a calculator, went to Wikipedia and tried to work out how long each Doc lasted in the role (apart from Mr. McGann and Mr. Everybody-Hurts-Sometimes). After initially getting 36 years, they remembered to carry the 1 and instead settled on three years. They took this off 44, figuring Capaldi will also be the Doctor for three years (here’s hoping for more). That, if you’ve been keeping up, comes to 41.
So how did they work out the actual date? Well…
“Of all the thirteen actors who have played the Doctor, four of them have birthdays in April – William Hartnell, Peter Davison, David Tennant and Peter Capaldi - making it the most popular month of birth of future Doctors. If you take an average date of all four of their birthdays, you get the 17th, yes the 17th of April.”
Of course, William Hartnell wasn’t actually born in April at all; that was the month of his death (indeed, his actual date of birth remains a mystery – Ed). He was born in January. As was Tom Baker, fact fans.
Overlooking that, the Radio Times reckons that the odds are in your favour if you turned 41 on 17th! It may also help if you’re an actor who is quirky and just that little bit magical.
Thanks, Radio Times. I think I speak on the behalf of all Whovians when I say, you’ve just enriched our lives.
