Doctor Who Series 8 Premiere Gets Worldwide Cinema Screening!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
BBC Worldwide has announced that the Doctor Who Series 8 premiere – Peter Capaldi’s first full episode – will be screened in cinemas around the world from 23 August 2014, following the success of the global cinema release of the 50th anniversary episode The Day of the Doctor which was screened in over 1500 cinemas around the world, allowing fans to come together to watch the show like never before.
Doctor Who makes a spectacular return to the big screen in the feature-length premiere episode of Series 8; Deep Breath. Directed by acclaimed Director Ben Wheatley (Sightseers, A Field in England) and written by Lead Writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat, the beginning of the Twelfth Doctor’s era stars Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, Jenna Coleman as his companion Clara Oswald and sees the return of fan favourites The Paternoster Gang - Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart) and Strax (Dan Starkey) – in a pulse-racing adventure through Victorian London.
Steven Moffat comments, “Last November the Doctor didn’t just conquer the world on television, he did it in the cinemas too. And like the show-off he is, he can’t resist another go – one taste of the silver screen is never enough. On August 23rd the new Doctor will begin his new adventures on BBC One and in cinemas all over the world. Movie-land beware – Capaldi is coming to get you!”
Doctor Who Series 8 premiere Deep Breath will be screened in participating cinemas around the world from 23 August, 2014. More information will be released by BBC Worldwide and participating cinema chains over the coming weeks. For all of the latest information please visit doctorwho.tv/watch/cinema.
Will you be watching in the cinema, or do you prefer to watch curled up on your sofa? And does the ability to take Doctor Who into the cinema so easily mean an end to any rumoured movies?

Craig Ferguson, John Barrowman, JJ Abrams & Titan Backup Strip
Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
From the red-hued hills of Gallifrey to the shores of the Medusa Cascade, the Kasterborous News Blast has it covered! In today’s Blast, Captain Jack defends the Twelfth Doctor, a comic book writer tackles the Eleventh Doctor, and another Who-related actor jumps into the Seventh Star Wars!
Doctor Who and the Fandom of Ferguson
Craig Ferguson is an American talk show host. Well, he seems to have a quite noticeable Scottish accent but he hosts an American talk show. It’s very strange. And he likes Doctor Who. A lot. In no other place in the universe can a person see a TARDIS on TV every night… sitting right on top of Craig’s requisite talk show desk. The Scotsman with a talky plan has had his share of Who-related guests on in his nearly 10 years of hosting (his Late Late Show is coming to an end this December): Matt Smith, Karen Gillan (several times… Scottish conspiracy?), Jenna Coleman, Alex Kingston, and even a pre-Twelfth Peter Capaldi (with whom Craig has been pals with for many years). The Observation Deck webpage has done us all a service and put all of the appearances together in one article. With the Late Late Show ending in a few months, it seems extremely likely that Peter Capaldi or others will reappear on the show. And how long before Craig himself appears in an episode of Doctor Who?
Captain Jack Harkness and the Scottish Conspiracy
John Barrowman, the secretly Scottish (shh!) actor who played companion Captain Jack Harkness, says that Peter Capaldi is going to be better than homemade haggis: “I know Peter as an actor because he was on Torchwood: Children of Earth and I think he will be an awesome Doctor. He’s a wonderful actor, he’s also Scottish so it holds in the line of David Tennant, myself and other Scots who have been involved in the Whovian world.” So there you have it. How about an all-kilt episode written by Steven Moffat where the Tenth and Twelfth (and Seventh?) Doctors team up to rescue Amy Pond and Captain Jack? (Thanks to doctorwhotv.co.uk).
Chewbacca Ate My Doctor Who Scarf
JJ Abrams, the time-travelling beardless clone of Steven Spielberg, has picked a Doctor Who actress to appear in the next Star Wars, which he is currently filming. Christina Chong, who appeared as Lorna Bucket–the soldier with a heart of gold– in 2011′s A Good Man Goes to War, will be appearing in a small role. The lovely Ms. Chong has also appeared in Johnny English Reborn, James “Call me Craig Owens!” Corden’s Wrong Mans, and quite recently, 24: Live Another Day.
The Short Adventures Of Flappy Hands and Ginger
It has been revealed that comic book creator Marc Ellerby (Great Beast comics) will be doing back-up stories for Titan Comics’ Eleventh Doctor comics. The English writer-illustrator will bring his cartoony style to whimsical shorts in upcoming issues. Ellerby believes that his work could bring in a wider audience for the Eleventh Doctor series: “I think [Titan Comics'] efforts should be applauded, they’re very much trying to branch the comics out to a wider audience, a more Tumblr friendly, web comic savvy crowd. Kudos to them and I hope the back ups become more of a regular thing and a massive massive thanks to editor Andrew James for going to bat for me several times.” For more information, read here.
Hopefully Not Much Silence in the Libary
According to the Bristol Press webpage, the Bristol Library will be hosting a Doctor Who event on Tuesday, 29 July. Called the Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey Whovian Social, it’s a free-of-charge event that invites fans to visit the library for some Who-style games, drawings, and other entertainment. There will also be a screening of the Scream of the Shalka flash-animated series and those attending can also get photos with a Dalek or TARDIS. The fun starts at 6:30 pm, so get your best scarf and brainy specs ready for action!
As a knowledgeable space pig once said, “That’s All (for the News Blast) Folks!” Watch out for the next Blast, which promises to have even more heaps of news and goings-on in the of Doctor Who!

Get On Your Bikes For The Dr Who Trail!
James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
When it comes to saving the planet, our own efforts are usually a bit less effective than the Doctor’s. However I’m sure he’d agree that hopping on our bikes and using leg-power instead of fuel is something that we can all do – one imagines that anti-grav bikes must be somehow environmentally friendly. The Doctor’s model anyhow.
If you’re in or near London and fancy getting back into the old-fashioned pedal power cycling you could take a look at British Cycling in London who have recently introduced a “Dr Who Trail” to their national Sky Ride Local program. These are social events aimed at getting people back on their bikes and increasing their confidence as cyclists – particularly if you have any children ready to shed their (temporal) stabilizers.
The trail is 6 miles, should take about an hour and visits several Doctor Who filming locations from the 80s in North West London. The trail starts at the junction of Rockware Avenue and Greenford road. Book in advance online (places still available) – weather should be good. Cyclists under 18 must wear a helmet. Take a look at this page from the GoSkyRide website.
Sky Ride don’t specify which filming locations they’re including, but from a nosy around the Doctor Who Locations guide it looks as though the final regular Classic story to be broadcast, 1989′s Survival is sure to feature. There’s some useful info on Perivale’s visitor site.
Should be Ace. On your bike, Kasterborites!
While we’re at it – would anyone be interested in other cycling tours of more locations? There has to be a wealth of sites to visit from both the Classic and New series. Any ideas?…
Thanks to Rob McLean, Recreation Manager for British Cycling in London.

Colin Baker Talks Five(ish) Doctors Sequel
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, has spoken about the possibility of a sequel to 50th anniversary special, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.
Paul McGann, aka the Eighth Doctor, previously mentioned that a follow-up was in the pipeline, and Baker confirms at least some interest in the idea. At the London Film and Comic Con 2014, he said, “All I know is when I last spoke to Peter [Davison], the reaction to Five-ish Doctors has been so positive that we discussed whether it was a good idea to do another one and we agreed that we didn’t want to do one that was a pale imitation of the first. That would be anti-climatic.”
Quite rightly, he says it all depends on story: “We have to come up with a really good idea first. There’s a couple of possibilities floating around, but nothing is set in stone,” he added. “Clearly doing one about the 51st anniversary isn’t going to be interesting. It’s got to be about something else.”
It was confirmed earlier today that The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot (starring, written and directed by the wonderful Peter Davison, and featuring a whole host of Who cast and crew, including Sylvester McCoy, Steven Moffat and Matt Smith) would be released on DVD and Blu-ray with various 50th anniversary celebrations like The Day of the Doctor, The Science of Doctor Who and Night of the Doctor.
Five(ish) might also be an award-winner; it’s been nominated for a Hugo award! “I’m particularly pleased about The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot as that was my acting debut,” says showrunner, Steven Moffat. “I remain available for any parts requiring a black jumper and slightly unrealistic hair.”
The ceremony is held on 17th August – just a few days before the Series 8 premiere! – and is hosted by sci-fi writers, Justina Robson and Geoff Ryman.
What do you think, dear readers? Any ideas for a Five(ish) sequel? Personally, I’d like to see Matt Smith taking on a bigger role in it, alongside his fellow Doctors, trying to get in on the 10th anniversary of NuWho…

Karen Gillan Mini Blast: Guardians Premiere
Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
The stellar rise of Karen Gillan continues unabated as LA played host to The Guardians of the Galaxy premiere – the latest potential mega-hit from Marvel Studios – where the girl formerly known as Pond stunned onlookers in a sheer purple dress and cute, newly regrown do.
Gillan, who has been taking on the big time with a series of eye-catching roles, plays Nebula, daughter of the death-obsessed, world conqueror Thanos (Josh Brolin) and sister to the green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and just so happens to be a blue, bad ass alien-killing machine.
The role presented numerous challenges: not only did she study Spartan history, train for two months and endure hours in the make-up chair as assistants turned her a deeper shade of blue; she also completely shaved her head bald.
It’s that level of commitment to the role that impressed Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige: ”She was willing to shave her head and she not only ended up shaving her head, but at Comic Con last year she came out on the panel in a wig and dramatically revealed it – it was so ballsy and it was so awesome,” he told TV3. “And she did all of her behind-the-scenes interviews completely bald and she is beautiful with hair and without hair, so it was really, really cool that she was willing to do that.”
I’ll say.
In fact, it’s the first question put to her on the red carpet in this clip from Marvel Entertainment; where in the endearingly-geeky Karen discusses everything from the make-up process, meditation, and Nebula’s ‘interesting’ relationship with Gamora.
With all this attention from the glitterati, it’s humbling to hear that Gillan is still as a down to Earth as ever – she even went to In & Out burger after the premiere! And then Tweeted about it!
As if appearing in summer super smashes and mingling with the A- List wasn’t enough, Gillan can also be seen in the latest trailer for the third series of Charlie Brooker’s spoof cop show – A Touch of Cloth reports Wales Online.
The show, which sees John Hannah play the grizzled, damaged cop Jack Cloth solving outlandish crimes in a hilarious Naked Gun style romp through cop drama clichés, sees Gillan join the team as Kerry Newblood – a rookie totally unprepared for random Gorilla attacks.
You can watch the trailer above – A Touch of Cloth returns to Sky 1 on the 8th August.

50th Anniversary DVD/Blu-ray Announced!
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
A full 50th anniversary collection is coming to DVD and Blur-ray in September!
It’s been long rumoured and everyone’s wanted to get their mitts on a prospect release, but it’s only now that the BBC has confirmed a special limited edition box set, which will be released 8th September 2014. The set will include:
The Name of the Doctor
The Night of the Doctor
The Day of the Doctor
The Time of the Doctor
An Adventure in Space and Time
The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot
It’ll be the first time Mark Gatiss’ masterpiece, An Adventure in Space and Time, will be on Blu-ray in the UK, and the first time Peter Davison’s brilliant The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot is a physical release; previously, it was only available online and via the red button. The set will include various extras too:
An exclusive cut of The Day of the Doctor readthrough;
Deleted scenes, trailers, and the cinema introduction for The Day of the Doctor;
Behind-the-scenes features on Name, Day, and Time of the Doctor as well as An Adventure in Space and Time;
Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide (from BBC3);
The Last Day minisode (a ‘prequel’ to Day);
Tales from the TARDIS;
Farewell to Matt Smith;
The Science of Doctor Who;
2013 Doctor Who Prom.
Frankly, this is a dream boxset for many fans, not only celebrating 50 years of Doctor Who, but also Matt Smith’s exceptional era as the Eleventh Doctor.
On top of that, we’ll be getting the superb Science of Doctor Who, presented by Professor Brian Cox, which proved that the idea behind the Eye of Harmony (or at least, how it was portrayed in Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS) is a possibility! The Prom, too, was chilling and commemorative. Well done to all involved on those fronts. The show really did take over TV!
Everyone will be after this set, but there’ll only be 6,000 units on Blu-ray and 4,000 units on DVD. Time for a pre-order? The DVD is available from the BBCShop, priced £28.99, and the Blu-ray is priced £31.99.
The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Collection is released on 8 September 2014.

Tennant Excited By “Enthusiastic” Peter Capaldi, Talks Script Leaks
Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
When you’ve spent time on a long running hit show, especially one that has such cult status as Doctor Who, it’s almost inevitable that someone will get around to asking you about the show in it’s current form. Fans expect that you are a fan of the show since you once started in it and that you are likely to be even more in the know about all the gossip and details of what goes on behind the scenes.
A few of the past actors to have played the Doctor have already been asked about their thoughts on the new guy taking the role. Paul McGann as said that Capaldi “could turn out to be the best of the lot” while Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy have all called him “brilliant” and are excited to see him on the show.
Back in October, Tennant jokingly called Capaldi “lazy” for using his native Scottish accent as the Doctor; Tennant famously took on an English accent for his time on the show instead of using his own Scottish voice. But recently at tv press conference, he was once again asked about he in-coming Peter Capaldi.
Tennant mentioned that he had gotten the chance to speak with Capaldi and that after their conversation he was “excited” to see the show especially after hearing how much of a “great time” Capaldi had while filming. “His [Peter's] enthusiasm is infectious for it.”
Tennant, soon to be seen on US television in Gracepoint, the FOX remake of the BBC hit Broadchurch, was also asked about the script leak that recently occurred. He stated that while he’d heard reports about the leak, he had not seen any of the scripts, adding that he “wouldn’t know where to look, so I haven’t found it.”
I daresay Mr. Tennant is still just as much of a fanboy for the show as we all are, and would like to remain as spoiler free as possible before the actual airing of Capaldi’s first episode of the show debuts on 23rd August. I personally know a few people that have gone looking and read the leaked scripts, but for as much as I love getting to know all the behind-the-scenes info and things before seeing a show or movie, even I am keeping a healthy distance from any of it. Just seems to be much more fun experiencing it all at the same time as the rest of the fandom!

BBC Releases New, Shorter Series 8 Trailer
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
A new, shorter trailer for Doctor Who Series 8 has been released today, and broadcast on BBC One this evening to herald the opening of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Featuring some of the monsters and scenes previously seen in the one-minute trailer, this 36 second shorter edit features a little more movement in some clips but is largely a rerun of the first half of the longer version.
If you want to see more of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, you will of course be tuning into BBC One on August 23rd – to keep you going, watch him above with Jenna Coleman as Clara and a host of monsters…

Peter Jackson Directing Doctor Who Still Likely, Says Moffat!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Doctor Who chieftain Steven Moffat has confirmed to SFX Magazine that The Hobbit director Peter Jackson IS likely to direct a future episode!
Several months ago it became clear that Jackson – best known for his sprawling adaptation of The Lord of the Rings – was interested in directing Doctor Who, even if it seemed incredibly unlikely. With hints that the show might decamp to New Zealand for a shoot, it still felt like one of those things that would never be (such as, perhaps, a new Star Wars trilogy with the original cast).
In the new SFX, out now, Moffat says that although Jackson is “still incredibly busy on The Hobbit… I’ve spoken to him face to face, and he would like to do one… and it would have to be when he’s available – and I don’t think he’s even been available enough to answer our emails of late!”
Still doubtful? Moffat continues, “I think it will probably happen at some point… I think he’s sincere in his Doctor Who fandom, to say the least. He’s a nice guy, he quite often drops me a line after a show goes out. I think he would also like us to go and make it in New Zealand! And I’m like ‘Okaaay… I’d rather we just flew you to Cardiff!’”
What do you think? Could it happen, and should it?
Peter Jackson would be the latest in a long line of celebrity admirers to get involved with Doctor Who, from Neil Gaiman and Sanjeev Bhaskar, to the new Time Lord himself, Peter Capaldi.
Of course, if Peter Jackson did direct an episode of Doctor Who, going by his work on The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and King Kong, we should probably expect to have to wait for the DVD release to view it in its entirety…

Philip Morris: Missing Episodes “wind is blowing the right way”
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Doctor Who archivist Philip Morris recently took to Facebook to discuss his work with fans interested in recovering more missing episodes.
Taking time out of his busy schedule, Morris was understandably cagey about things, while optimistic. So why the mystery? Let’s put it in his own words:
“…during the last announcement, I was in a very hostile part of the world and suddenly I was everywhere on TV. My anonymity was compromised, which made the team a target. So we must plan these things carefully for the greater good of the project and the safety of the personnel involved.”
This all seems fair enough, and Morris is well aware that fans “just want a yes or no…. it’s complex. All I can say is the wind is blowing the right way. Be patient.” He goes on to add that “there are no announcements in the pipeline at present. It can sometimes be the wrong thing with ongoing work and investigation.”
Anyone doubtful about the danger of recovering missing episodes might consider Phil’s experiences in Syria, where he missed a shell attack. “There have been lots of tricky moments – bandits, armed militia – but that was the closest.”
Perhaps the most important thing to take from all of this relates to the announcements. It seems unlikely that BBC Worldwide would want to risk distracting from the the era of Doctor Who about to hit TV screens, so we don’t expect to see any new announcements about missing episodes until the New Year (although of course we’d like all of them tomorrow!).
