Classic Tom Baker: In Swiss Toni, 2003

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Tom Baker, 80 last January, is of course well-known for his roles in Doctor Who and Little Britain. But did you know of his association with Charlie Higson?

Higson, who of course wrote a 50th anniversary adventure for the Ninth Doctor that fits in a brief moment during Rose, is well known for his work on The Fast Show and spin-off sitcom Swiss Toni, which is where the clips above come from. Compiled by “Tardisgirlfrance”, they feature Tom as a washed up Ken Russell-style film director, and he’s bloody marvellous – a show-stealing performance.

This should help get your Monday morning into gear :)

Capaldi Is A “Silver Fox” – Says, Um, Foxes

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Sweet singer Foxes – real name Louisa Rose Allen – has recently been chatting about her forthcoming appearance in Doctor Who Series 8, explaining how she got the part and what she thinks of Peter Capaldi…

In fact, it’s quite an amusing story as it seems the young singer had no idea who she was talking to in the conversation that lead to her being cast!

“Behind me a ‘Doctor Who’ conference was going on. I sort of went back and got talking to these guys and I just said how much I loved it. They watched my show and little did I know, they were producers. A couple of weeks later, they asked me to do a song for the show.” But will she watch herself in Doctor Who? Probably not, as although she’s a fan, Foxes isn’t keen on seeing herself on screen. “I won’t watch ‘Doctor Who’. Well, I will because I’m a superfan, but I won’t watch my episode. I like to do it and let go of it and not dwell.”

Meanwhile, the singer has been full of praise for Peter Capaldi, and despite a 35 year age difference enthused, “I know I’m biased, but I like that he’s a charming silver fox. Sod it, he was lovely.”

So, ladies (and a few gents) of Kasterborous, what do you think? Does Peter Capaldi set your double heart beats racing?

Big Finish Releases Revenge of the Swarm Trailer

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Reuniting the Seventh Doctor and Ace actors Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred with Hex actor Philip Olivier, Revenge of the Swarm is a sequel to 1977′s The Invisible Enemy, and guest stars John Leeson reprising the other role he played in the serial that originally introduced K9.

Surprisingly, this is a classic enemy Big Finish has so far steered clear of – so, what’s it all about?

The Doctor thought he had defeated the microscopic Nucleus of the Swarm in his fourth incarnation. He was wrong. It survived within the TARDIS, and now it has brought it back to Titan Base, back to the point of its own creation. It has a plan that spans centuries, a plan which will result in the Nucleus becoming more powerful – and larger – than ever before.

To defeat it, the Doctor, Ace and Hex must confront the Nucleus within its new domain – the computer-world of the Hypernet, the information network crucial to the survival of the human empire. But if the Doctor is to save the day, he has to risk everything and everyone he holds dear…

Here’s the trailer:

Released this month and available from BigFinish.com, Revenge of the Swarm is written by Jonathan Morris.

Character Building Doctor Who Wave 4 Released By Stealth

Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Fans of cute little figures (insert your own punch line, folks) will be gratified to learn that Character Building has released its latest wave of Doctor Who Micro Figures!

Seemingly with no prior announcement, the manufacturer has snuck out the fourth edition of the pocket money toys and they’re steadily emerging on stockists’ shelves.

Wave 4 boasts twelve new assorted characters, mostly hailing from the Moffat era of the show, and there are a number of noteworthy aspects to this latest collection.

With no less than four Doctors, five friends and companions and a mere three villains, buyers may feel that their shelf labelled ‘Enemies of Doctor Who’ will be left a little under-populated. To me this does rather serve to emphasise the lack of decent monsters introduced into the programme in recent years, although it would undoubtedly have been fun to see, say, a Gunslinger, a snowman or even a dinosaur from a spaceship included this time around.

And whilst its certainly welcome to see Madame Vastra (complete with fearsome looking swords) and Strax in the set, Character Building have surely missed a trick by leaving out Jenny, meaning that those wanting to create adventures for the Paternoster Gang will be forced to improvise. Myself, I would fashion a cloak to enable one of the Clara’s to serve as my Jenny, safe in the knowledge that there’s a back-up to accompany the Doctor. No doubt others will have their own ideas.

It also seems somewhat curious to include Captain Jack in what is otherwise very much a Series 5-7 zone unless, of course, the producers know something we don’t about what’s coming up. Let the rumours start here!

So what are the highlights of Wave 4, you ask? Well, the Zygon wears a very accurate scowl, although for this forty-something fan he’s too neat looking to match up to the mighty Broton. It’s always hard to go wrong with a Dalek, of course – who else would have liked to have seen this recreation of the Ironside bearing a cup of tea? The inclusion of a ‘Regeneration Costume Twelfth Doctor’ (nice to see Character Building setting their lip up against Steven Moffat with his shock ‘there is no such character as the Twelfth Doctor’ comments) will please completists.

Pulses of a sizeable percentage of the viewing public will surely quicken at the prospect of an Oswin Oswald (wearing that dress) on top of their mantelpiece, even if she is only two inches tall. Pick of the bunch may well be the War Doctor with his alarmingly spiky hair. If you want to know what Ant and Dec will look like in 40 years time, this is the figure for you…

View the whole caboodle over at The Doctor Who site!

Hulu, Sherlock, Ace’s Legacy, Doctor Who Street Art & More!

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Snazzier than a purple velvet bow-tie, flashier than a jewel-encrusted fez, and jazzier than patent leather vortex manipulator… it’s the Kasterborous News Blast! In today’s blast of great intelligence: Hulu knows Who, the Doc and Sherlock get musical, Mickey Smith joins the comics, and Doctor Who arts up the streets!

Who-Lu, Ahem, I Mean Hulu!

In anticipation of Peter Capaldi’s new series, the Hulu streaming service has announced that American Doctor Who fans will be able to watch their favorite Time Lord all throughout August. Hulu will debut a two-hour special entitled The Ultimate Guide, in which “the Doctor has lost his memory and Clara helps him to take an in-depth look at the past of one of the most intriguing fictional characters of all time.”

The service will also exclusively debut The Day of the Doctor, The Time of the Doctor, and the two previously lost Patrick Troughton stories, Web of Fear and Enemy of the World. So far, none of these is available on Netflix or Amazon Prime in the USA.

Where’s Barrowman When You Actually Need Him?!*

Two fans have made their own mash-up of Doctor Who and Sherlock, not somewhat surprisingly called Wholock: The Musical.  Yes, the two musically inclined fellows have put on their best Matt Smith and Benny Cumberbatch to sing like neither actor has ever sung before.  And if the thought of Cumberbatch (or a facsimile thereof) belting out jaunty tunes doesn’t give you nightmares, wait until you see his eyebrows!  In all fairness, it’s a fun song and video, and you can watch it here:

(*Probably on Loose Women, actually – Ed)

The Ace of All Gamers

As released through an article on pocketgamer.co.uk, players can unlock the character of Ace (the Seventh Doctor’s explosives-loving companion) with a special code for the game  Doctor Who: The Legacy.

As the site explains: “Ace will otherwise be completely unavailable until the release of Hunt For Greyhound One. Plus, even when the expansion is out, she’s going to be quite the rare drop… Perhaps that’s your ultimate squad in Doctor Who: Legacy assembled at last. Wilfred Mott and the Brigadier will also be joining the cast…”  (Yay!)  Interested gamers just need to fill in their name and e-mail address on the Pocketgamer webpage and after a small wait, will be able to play as (a weirdly blonde-looking) Ace!  Wicked!

Now That’s Who I Call Music!

Some classic Doctor Who music surprisingly found its way on to BBC3 recently!  During a broadcast of Late Junction, some of the Who-related soundtracks (from the Hartnell-era stories The Web Planet and Galaxy Four) were played about a half-hour into the show.  Max Reinhardt presented the eclectic mix of music, which was played live at Latitude 2014.

The program is also available on BBC iPlayer Radio.

The Doctor Is From The Streets… Of Gallifrey

Doctor Who graffiti

Art-minded Whovians from around the world have tried to make Banksy proud by spray-painting images of Daleks, Cybermen, TARDISes, and more on various public places.  In a photo-rific article by the Radio Times, Doctor Who graffiti art from Australia, Italy, and the UK can be seen on everything from light posts to sidewalks to brick walls.

Much of the artwork is fantastic, but the naughty artists risk being exterminated by the law if they’re caught!

Noel Clarke’s Comics Adventure

Titan Comics, publishers of the new line of Tenth and Eleventh Doctor comic books, has announced that they will publish a series written by a Ninth Doctor companion, none other than actor-writer-director Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith).  The comic will be called The Troop and will be co-created and written by Clarke.  It will feature a group of teenagers who find that they have superpowers.  In a video statement, Clarke promises to “push the envelope” of the comics genre.  Let’s hope one of the heroes doesn’t have the power to turn into a big plastic trash bin!

That’s it for today’s News Blast, Kasterborites!  Is it just me, or is Doctor Who feeling very musical and comic booky these days?

What Is Your Favourite Doctor Who Quotation?

Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

When you’re a pop culture icon, you tend to get quoted by not just fans, but ordinary people, some who have never even seen or read where ever the quote originated.

“Say hello to my little friend!” “I coulda been a contender” “Do, or do not. There is no try.”

The Gallifrey community on Reddit recently asked it’s members what their top Doctor Who quotes were. We’ve collected ten of the best (in this writer’s opinion at least) to share with you. They are in no particular order. The show is so eminently quotable, who can choose which one is the very best? (Though I admit to making my own favourite number 1…)

10.Good men don’t need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many.”

- Eleventh Doctor, A Good Man Goes To War.

The Doctor is a complex man. As we’ve now seen from the Twelfth Doctor, he doesn’t always know if he really is a good man or not. He travels through time and space, hoping times and planets. Sometimes he goes where he wants, other times, its almost as if the TARDIS is sending him where he most needs to be. Most of what he does, he does with the best of intentions. But sometimes, the darker side of his emotions shine through. Most Who fans know that he’s met his darker self back in a past regeneration. For these reasons, he tries to keep that side of himself in check, and works hard to be that good man that everyone sees him as.

9.The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. Hey, the good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant.”

- Eleventh Doctor, Vincent And The Doctor.

Life is all about what you make of it. The Doctor lives this to the fullest, travelling all throughout time and space and showing his companions everything he can. Even when he was stuck on Earth, the Doctor did what he could to help people. Sometimes we face bad times in our life but then there are moments of joy. All of it is important as all of it contributes to making us who we are.

8.The Doctor is worth the monsters… One may tolerate a world of demons for the sake of an angel.”

- Reinette Poisson, the Madame de Pompadour, The Girl in the Fireplace.

While the Doctor would never describe himself as being an angel, most of his companions would agree with what Reinette says of the Tenth Doctor – traveling with him, being with him, is worth anything else they may go through in their lives or in their travels with him.

7.Courage isn’t just a matter of not being frightened, you know. It’s being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway.”

- Third Doctor, Planet of the Daleks.

I think this sums up the Doctor quite well, and it’s something we all should take to heart. No matter what you face, it’s okay to be scared, to be frightened. Courage is pushing past that fear and doing what you need to do despite it. While this quote comes from a few seasons into the Third Doctor’s run, it something he most certainly faced in being exiled to Earth. He didn’t want it to happen but he faced his exile with his usual determination.

6.One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.”

- First Doctor, The Dalek Invasion of Earth.

Fitting that this famous line from the First Doctor should be included in this list. William Hartnell’s First Doctor began this now 50 year journey and paved the way for the future of the show. The Doctor will always return, even if it takes him until his eighth regeneration…

5. Whatever you’ve got planned, forget it. I’m the Doctor. I’m 904 years old. I’m from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. I am the oncoming storm, the bringer of darkness, and you are basically just a rabbit aren’t you?

-Tenth Doctor, The Day Of The Doctor

This is just a fun quote, one that makes me giggle whenever I watch the 50th anniversary special, or even just say it out loud! And I think it well represents the Doctor – sometimes he is serious and to be feared yet other times, its all just a bit of blustering and hot air! Plus it’s a great little nod to the Tenth Doctor’s era on the show.

10298824_1491145761104044_1381581145992977001_n

4. “I will not forget one line of this, not one day. I swear. I will always remember when the Doctor was me.”

- Eleventh Doctor, The Time Of The Doctor.

This was a great last line for the Eleventh Doctor. He’d been through so much and fought so hard for so long but I get the feeling that although tragedy sometimes seemed to follow him, the Doctor had the most fun and the best years of his life in his Eleventh incarnation. He traveled for so long and yes, had many companions and friends, but his Eleventh form gained what he hadn’t had in a very long time – a family. Even though he eventually lost them like everyone else in his life, they made his life lighter and happier. Some say that Eleven is a very dark man – he willingly forgot about all of the destruction he’d had no choice to making – I say he became a younger man for the sake of a lonely little girl who needed a friend and that he was a man trying to move on with his life. He didn’t know that he’d be eventually searching for his home that still survived!

3.There’s no point in being grown up if you can’t be childish sometimes.” – Fourth Doctor, Robot.

The Doctor had just regenerated from the serious and scientific Third Doctor into the younger, lighthearted, slightly manic Fourth Doctor. He’d gone from stuffy capes and ruffles to wild hair and absurdly long coats and scarves. While he’d regained his freedom to travel in time and space a good time before, he regenerated into a truly different man not just a new face. This quote sums up the Fourth Doctor but I think would also work for the Eleventh and even the Tenth Doctors as well. Life is serious but who says you can’t have fun along the way?

This video is proof that this Doctor was most definitely not always the same serious man that he had been!

2.You want weapons? We’re in a library! Books! The best weapons in the world!” – Tenth Doctor, Tooth And Claw.

Here we have the Doctor trying to remind those he was with that not everything requires violence – the Doctor himself has often eschewed guns and physical weapons in favor of using one’s mind and the knowledge it contains as the ultimate weapon! Thinking through a situation will often lead to better results than if one runs head on at it. If people understood each other, the universe would be a much better place!

1.In 900 years of time and space, I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important.” – Eleventh Doctor, A Christmas Carol.

This quote is the one I’d call my favorite. It says something so very important about everyone and it says so much about the Doctor himself. The Doctor loves people, especially those that might consider themselves just ordinary. This is a very big part of the rebooted show – Rose was an “ordinary” 19 year old girl. Donna, while she was the “best temp in Chiswick” didn’t generally think highly of herself, and her own mother was frequently harsh on her. Yet Rose became Bad Wolf, saviour of billions. Donna became the Doctor! He proved that there was no such thing as an “ordinary” person – everyone is unique and special and important to the world, whether they are a lonely child needing help or a captain of industry who needed to be reminded of the joys of life. We’re all special and have meaning. How often has the Doctor wished he was one of us!?

tumblr_mc9kdc153H1rznzjco1_500

Now, we were going to run this as a poll, but with 50+ years, 14 Doctors and all manner of media to account for, you’d have still been reading the choices on August 23rd. So instead, tell us what you think of these Doctor Who quotes, and share with us your own favourites in the comments.

Mark Gatiss Praises “Amazing” New Doctor Who Star

Alex Skerratt is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

New series scribe Mark Gatiss has opened up about new Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi – and it’s all good!

In a recent interview with the Islington Gazette, Gatiss spoke candidly about the latest incarnation of Gallifrey’s most famous Time Lord.

“I’ve seen quite a bit of him and he’s absolutely fantastic,” he said. “Peter’s just got this amazing, fierce, funny, slightly alarming quality to him – he reminds me a lot of Alastair Sim, actually. You’re not quite sure where you stand with him; he’s very funny, but he’s got this glint in his eye and I think it’s a terrific run of episodes.”

I’m sure a lot of people are terrified that they’ll be lumbered with a brooding, aggressive, sinister Time Lord when the series returns this August. I’m equally sure that the BBC is trying to capitalise on this angst, and whip the fragile fans into a frenzy! As the recent trailer demonstrates, Capaldi is piloting the TARDIS “into darkness” in a manner similar to that of Kerr Avon from Blake’s 7, his expression ice-cool and shrewd. Will the Doctor retain this façade throughout the twelve episode run? Mr Gatiss seems to think so…

So he’s going to be less human, a tad anti-social, quite abrupt, and rude – a Tom Baker/Jon Pertwee/Christopher Eccleston hybrid? That’s actually quite reassuring!

“The brilliant thing about Doctor Who is that it’s always changing like the central character – not just the face of the actor, but the direction of the show.

“David and Matt were both wonderful, but both were very human Doctors and I think it’s time to remind people that the Doctor isn’t always like that. He’s that sort of Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee and even Christopher Eccleston style actually: it’s someone who’s not immediately going to be your best friend and can be quite abrupt and rude.”

So he’s going to be less human, a tad anti-social, quite abrupt, and rude – a Tom Baker/Jon Pertwee/Christopher Eccleston hybrid? That’s actually quite reassuring! Let’s not forget Tom Baker’s wonderful introduction to the Scarlionis in City of Death, peppered with wit and misdirection, all the while concocting a plan. Then there’s Jon Pertwee’s flamboyance and Venusian aikido, and his hovercrafts and gyrocopters, and his incessant ability to perplex, (I point you to the classic Boss scene from The Green Death.) Then there’s the wonderful Christopher Eccleston, grooving to Soft Cell’s ‘Tainted Love’ with gay abandon, and grinning from ear to ear when he discovers the Slitheens’ home planet – “Raxacoricofallapatorius!”

It’s so easy to label any Doctor as The Fierce One, but it’s important to remember that, from 1963 to the present day, it’s the same character – an alien being with a passion for life, justice, and the universe. I’m sure we’ll see all of these qualities in Peter Capaldi’s performance, and it’s fair to say that he probably knows the Doctor as well as any of us. However fierce, alarming, abrupt or rude, it’s absolutely the same man, whether we like it or not, (and I’m sure we will.)

But then, if I were to tell you that the next thing I say will be true, but that the last thing I said was a lie, would you believe me…?

Karen Gillan on GOTG Workouts: “I felt like I was in a Rocky montage”

Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

It seems that former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan is everywhere these days. She starred in her first leading role in the horror movie Oculus back in the spring, is popping up in 3D in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy as villainess Nebula (out last week in the UK, premieres in American theaters today. More on that momentarily!), and is headlining her own comedy, Selfie, on ABC this fall.

To say the very least, everything appears to be coming up Pond. While Gillan is a brilliant actress and stunningly beautiful, it seems that her commitment to the roles she takes on is her greatest career quality. Case in point, when Gillan was announced as cast member for GOTG, she showed up at San Diego Comic-Con and surprised everyone with a completely shaven head. Commitment; she has it on lock.

It should be no surprise then that her role as Nebula called for even more. Speaking with British newspaper Metro, Gillan dished on the physical training she had to do to prepare for the role:

“I trained with a personal trainer four times a week to bulk up. I don’t work out as much normally so it was pretty intense. And then every day I wasn’t working on the film I’d have to do martial arts and they’d teach me how to kick and punch over and over again. It felt like I was in a Rocky montage.”

While we caught glimpses of what an action sequence with Karen Gillan would be like in Series 6’s The Girl Who Waited, this seems to indicate that we’re going to see a much more physical performance from Gillan than we’re used to seeing. Of course, it’s also interesting to note that her reaction to her bald head the next morning was “Aargh!” which does make sense, dear reader. I believe I’d have the same reaction if I had my hair shaved off as well. What do you think, fellow Kasterborites? Will you be checking out Guardians of the Galaxy? Are you surprised at the levels of commitment Karen Gillan has displayed in her roles? Sound off below!

(Via Belfast Telegraph)

*Writer’s Note: After writing this piece, I stumbled upon the opportunity to see the film at an advance screening here in the states. I’ll not say too much, as I’m not sure if a review of the movie is planned, but I do have a few extra thoughts to add. The first of which is that the hype is right on the money this time around. This is by far the best movie Marvel has released, from frame to frame, and if you have the opportunity, the film is definitely worth the watch. Second, while Rocket Raccoon wins the award for most scene stealing moments, Gillan’s Nebula is a thing to behold. Virtually unrecognizable as the Amy Pond we all know and love, she steals the show from the other villains when on screen.

For example, the highly anticipated scenes featuring Josh Brolin’s Thanos are more notable for Gillan’s facial expressions, body language, and lines (short, as they may be). This is no slight on Brolin’s performance (who turns in an interesting performance as the Mad Titan), but more a credit to the talent of Gillan and the brilliance of Gunn’s screenplay. American accent notwithstanding, Gillan’s Nebula makes the most of her screen time, which is smaller than you might think as she isn’t the main antagonist in the plot, and leaves this writer hoping she makes a return in the 2017 sequel or other Marvel films along the way. – NK

Capaldi Doctor Appears On Dead Ringers: Trailer

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

We worried it might happen, and it has. New Doctor Peter Capaldi will be mimicked in the new series of Dead Ringers, which collides the Twelfth Doctor into an uncomfortable mashup with The Thick of It’s foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker.

As cheap ideas go, it’s in the bargain bucket.

Dead Ringers has recently been announced as returning to radio with much of the original cast, such as one-time Fourth Doctor impersonating legend Jon Culshaw (although we prefer Mr John Guilor’s), and Lewis McLeod – best known as the voice of the TV’s Postman Pat (Stephen Mangan voiced him in the recent film) – is providing the voice of Peter Capaldi/the Doctor/Malcolm Tucker.

Not because he can impersonate them particularly well, but because he’s Scottish.

Have a listen below and tell us what you think…
