The Late Late News Blast… With James Corden?!
Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Hello once again, dear K readers! For today’s tasty news tidbits, we’ve got some new on set images, we’re learning about some Who connections in unexpected places, Daleks who attend weddings, and how Doctor Who relates to… parenting skills?
The Whoniverse and CBS’ The Late Late Show
As a good number of Whovians are aware, the current host of the CBS late night talk show, Craig Ferguson, is an avid Doctor Who fan. Since taking over The Late Late Show in 2005, he has had a number of Who stars on the show for his brand of late night talk show chitchat and silliness. He even keeps a replica of the TARDIS on his standard late night talk show host desk. And as is also now well known, in his younger days, Ferguson was in a band with the man who is soon to premiere as the next Doctor, Peter Capaldi.
Back in April, Ferguson announced that he was leaving the show at the end of the year. While there was speculation as to the fate of the late night gab-fest, now comes word that CBS has found a replacement for Ferguson, and it’s a pick that seems rather unexpected.
Sources close to the production of the show are saying that CBS has chosen comedian and much loved Who actor James Corden to lead the talk show. While Corden isn’t as widely known here in the US, he is quite well known in the UK as the creator of the sitcom Gavin and Stacey, among other things. Corden also has a 2012 Tony to his name for his role in One Man, Two Guvnors on Broadway.
Corden is currently staring in Begin Again with Keira Knightly and is soon to be seen in Disney’s production of Steven Sondheim’s Into The Woods. No word yet on what this new job might mean to the chances of Corden reprising his role of Craig Owens on Doctor Who. I, for one, would love to see Capaldi visit him and interact with a now good deal older Stormaggedon. Grandpa Doctor?

More Whoniverse Connections in Guardians Of The Galaxy Besides Karen Gillan
Those of you still following the career of Karen Gillan since she left Doctor Who know that she’s had some pretty interesting and very un-Amy Pond like roles lately, none the least of which is the bald, blue, cyborg space pirate assassin Nebula in this summer’s blockbuster Guardians Of The Galaxy. But did you know there are other actors in the film with a connection to Doctor Who?
Metro UK has come up with a list of 4 other Guardians actors that have (or will be or, in one case, just want to) appeared in episodes of Who. So as not to spoil it for anyone that hasn’t seen the films, I can tell you that these actors have played an Ice Warrior, a Minotaur, a king made of wood, and a makeup artist – and that’s just two of the actors!
New Photos From A Filming Location In Cardiff
I know there are many out there that are averse to seeing ANYTHING that has to do with production of the show because even the smallest details might lead to some hint of what to expect in an episode. So if you are one of those people, SKIP TO THE NEXT NEWS ITEM!!
Ok, you’ve been warned…
Recently, crew for the show have been spotted outside the National Museum Cardiff, filming scenes of what is believed to be the last episode for Series 8. While there are no principal actors to be seen, someone in a guard uniform was seen on the set that has been given extensive foliage. Click the link above to see a quick video of the location. No word yet as to what the episode might be about but I wouldn’t mind a museum come to life, a la Night At The Museum, done Doctor Who style…
A Wedding With A Dalek
When Paul and Joanne Seymour decided to renew their wedding vows after 30 years of marriage, they wanted to do something a little different and to raise money for charity in doing it! Paul, in a fez and Tom Baker long scarf, walked with Joanne, in a black lace gown with a TARDIS hair accessory, down the aisle to the Doctor Who theme and had a Dalek wearing a bow tie serve as the ring bearer!
The couple, who also received a special signed photo from former Doctor David Tennant congratulating them, both work at Darent Valley Hospital in the maternity ward, and had been thinking of celebrating their years of marriage in a similar way. The event began to grow in scope and the couple agreed to help raise money for a fund at the hospital for babies with special needs. The vicar wasn’t exactly sure about including a Dalek in a wedding ceremony, but when he heard they were also going to raise money for a charity, agreed to go along with the plan. In regards to the whole event, the reverend said, “They’re great science fiction fans and that love of sci-fi is part of their marriage. They wanted to raise funds for the Little Buds fund at Darent Valley Hospital and so I was happy to do something for them. I’ve never had a wedding quite like this.”

Doctor Who and Parenting Lessons
Writer and owner John Kinnear of the Ask Your Dad blog is a fellow Whovian. And through watching the show, he’s come up with six things that the show and the Doctor have taught him about parenting. In a sweet blog post, John talks about how there are some days that are like a really great episode, one that you wish you could watch over again for the first time so you could experience the wonder of it all over again. But some days are like those episodes you really don’t like – you wish you could just skip them altogether.
Are Daleks just basically toddlers? Quite possibly. We all know that when taking care of kids, one shouldn’t blink, or mud will be tossed about the yard, lipstick will be used to create masterpieces on the walls, and the dog’s kibble will become a tasty treat… for the goldfish. Sometimes, we have to lie or not tell the whole truth and believe in magic screwdrivers to keep them innocent and full of joy and wonder. But we still know that while things are sometimes rough, just seeing their sweet faces and happy smiles can be regenerating and re-energizing, and that our hearts are very much like the TARDIS: always much, much bigger on the inside with all the love they hold. And we do it all with only one heart!

The clips allow us our first proper glimpse of Capaldi in the swing of things, with Luther‘s Michael Smiley in tow.
We’ve plenty of photos from the World Tour so far.

News Blast: Billie in Car Incident; Writing Tips from Moran; and Make Your Own TARDIS!
Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Faster than a Sontaran raid on a potato farm, more powerful than a Dalek’s singing voice, and more unexpected than a Cyberman using a can opener… It’s the Kasterborous News Blast! In today’s Blast, the Time Lord gets crafty, Sylvester McCoy stuns in the USA, Joss Whedon puts down the Doctor, and Billie Piper sadly has a frightful day:
Billie’s Scary Situation
The Daily Mail is reporting that Billie Piper (companion Rose Tyler) was involved in a scary real-life accident on Tuesday afternoon. As per the site: “She is understood to have been driving at under five miles per hour as she crossed Goods Way into the path of the teenage cyclist who was travelling downhill at a significant speed.”
The 16-year-old cyclist ran into the back of her car and sustained “serious injuries” including a “severe shoulder injury.” An eyewitness called the police, who later questioned and released Piper. The current health of the cyclist is not known, but Piper was said to have been so shaken up by the incident that she was not able to perform in the West End play, Great Britain.
The Real Louisville Slugger
The Louisville Fan Fest was last weekend in Kentucky, USA. A cool new blog post by Jenna Foster on Louisville.com has some great photos and commentary on the third and last day of the convention. Seventh Doctor and raconteur extraordinaire, Sylvester McCoy, was there to entertain the guests with his stories–and it looks like he was up to his old tricks of running around the audience with a microphone! Let’s just hope that he wasn’t supposed to be filming on the set of those flash-in-the-pan Hobbit films!
Joss Giveth and Joss Taketh Away
Buffy and Marvel’s Avengers guru Joss Whedon – who, at 50 years old, is now exactly the same age as Doctor Who - does not have kind words for our favorite Time Lord. In his new memoir, Joss Whedon: The Biography, the geek mastermind has this to say: “I watched one episode of [classic] Doctor Who and I was like, ‘Did they film that in my basement?’ because it looked cheesy.”
And that was the end of his Who interest. He also mentions that he also was not interested in other British sci-fi shows such as Blake’s 7 or Red Dwarf, which he must have tried to watch while he attended school for a time in the UK.
The Terror of the Peg People!
The Sonic Screwdriver doesn’t work on wood, you know. But an artist on the craft-tastic Etsy website is selling super-cute versions of Doctor Who characters… that are made out of wooden pegs.
The artist, MakingsfromMommyLand, colorfully paints the pegs so that resemble characters from the Tenth Doctor to Martha Jones to the Cybermen. A full set of 20 is available for $165, and smaller sets are for sale as well.
A Titanic Performance
Kylie Minogue, perhaps most famous (or not…) for playing one-off companion Astrid Peth in the Voyage of the Damned 2007 Christmas special, received rave reviews for her performance at the closing of the Commonwealth Games. The tiny stick of entertainment dynamite did a showy seven song set to close out the games and signal their move to Australia in 2018. After Kylie’s great chemistry with David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor in Voyage of the Damned, wouldn’t it be great to see Astrid revived for an adventure with the Twelfth?
The TARDIS May Well Have Been Made Out Of Paper…
A set of Doctor Who coloring book pages, a cut-outable TARDIS, and even River Song’s Diary are now available to print out on the crafty Daily Deals from a Nerd Mom webpage. The projects look to be extremely well-done and fun to make… and best of all, are totally free-of-charge!
Kids of all ages will enjoy putting this new batch of projects together, and other previous Who paper-based projects are also available on the site. Now where did I put my Sonic Scissors?!
The Pen is Mightier Than The Sofa (Or Hiding Behind It)
Doctor Who and Torchwood writer James Moran appeared at the Leaky Con last weekend, and Leaky News has details on how he approaches the creative process. For example, The Fires of Pompeii scripter says he avoids “getting stuck” by making a playlist of music and using that as a sort of soundtrack for what he is writing. Moran has been busy, and recently wrote the movies Cockneys vs. Zombies and Tower Block, which coincidentally starred Russell Tovey (Midshipman Frame) and Sheridan Smith (Big Finish companion Lucie Miller).
TL;DR? Watch The News Blast!
If all of that seemed like a lot to take in, why not let our editor Christian Cawley take you through it right now, on video?
That’s it for this installment of the big Blast, Kasterborites! Can’t wait for the next News Blast? Think of how a Yeti trapped in a subway feels!
(Don’t panic too much – another will be along shortly.)

No Animation for The Underwater Menace?
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Prepare to get annoyed.
Planet 55, the company responsible for previous DVD animations of missing episodes, including William Hartnell’s regeneration story, has issued a statement that appears to dispel rumours that they’re working to bring The Underwater Menace to DVD:
“There have been many queries about Planet 55 Studios’s work on Doctor Who and whether we are doing any more.
To date, Planet 55 Studios has completed work on three Doctor Who animated reconstructions for BBC Worldwide’s DVD range: The Reign of Terror, The Tenth Planet and, most recently, The Moonbase. We really enjoyed creating those but they are the only Doctor Who stories Planet 55 Studios have worked on and there are no plans to work on any more.
At the moment the company is focused on animation projects completely unconnected to Doctor Who.”
As most of you will know, as of 2011, two out of four episodes from the Second Doctor tale now exist in the archives; previously, when only two episodes were missing, those were animated. This could mean a number of things.
Firstly, a new company could be involved. That seems unlikely, however, seen as Steve Roberts of the Restoration team previously stated: “[W]e’re the team that remasters the episodes for DVD release and even we don’t have a clue what’s going on with TUM now. From where we’re standing, it’s looking like the range is dead.”
Has the BBC just forgotten about The Underwater Menace, and if so, why?! There’s certainly call for an as-completed-as-possible collection!
Similar to the DVD release of The Web of Fear last year and the shoved-together Galaxy 4, we could be in for a reconstruction, comprising of audio and telesnaps. If that’s the case, I’m quite disappointed.
Otherwise, this could add further fuel to the ‘omnirumour’; that many more ‘missing’ episodes have been found by Phillip Morris and co., so the BBC don’t want unnecessary expense, when they could simply wait for the two other episodes to be fully restored.
It does seem that something, uhm, fishy is going on, especially as it was reported in the past that animation of The Underwater Menace was being carried out. Heck, there was even a DVD trailer for the story…!
Your thoughts, as ever, below please.

Sharing The Peter Capaldi Love In The PodKast!

On this week’s podKast, Christian Cawley and James McLean discuss 10 reasons why new Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi is going to be awesome.
The podKast team really think it’s time to share the love for a man who is possibly one of the most accomplished performers to take the role (he’s got an Oscar, you know!) and in light of the noisy naysayers with their shallow ageist attitude, the fightback starts right here.
We also spend a few moments discussing the Fourth Doctor, with news that both Matthew Waterhouse and Tom Baker are interested in reuniting in a Big Finish drama, and that Tom’s Doctor tops the eBay Doctor Who merchandise sales chart.
Along with our recommendations, we’ve also got an impassioned plea from Christian who is exasperated by the actions of certain fans looking for nude photos of Jenna Coleman and Karen Gillan…
As for Brian Terranova – well, who knows where he got to…

Hermione Norris: Capaldi Is “Extraordinary”
Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
As we draw ever closer to D(eep Breath)-Day the tension is getting to the point you could cut it with the sharp edge of Tegan’s tongue. And as always the drips of praise and information keep falling, this time from Hermione Norris, star of Spooks, Wire in the Blood, Casualty, Heartbeat, The Bill and Kingdom, and now Doctor Who.
The star who took the part for the sake of her 10 year old son Wilf (nice name by the way) who is a big fan – and let’s face it, we would all do the same – will be appearing in an episode written by Wallander writer Peter Harness and filmed in Lanzarote. There’s plenty of speculation that this could be in some way related to the Fifth Doctor adventure, Planet of Fire, the story that introduced us to Peri and in which we said farewell to Turlough and Kamelion.
Speaking about her episode, she was very careful not to let slip anything juicy, stating that “I don’t know if I’m allowed to say anything – I think you have to sign the Official Secrets Act!” But she did comment on Capaldi and his portrayal of the Doctor. “He’s extraordinary, Peter – just watching him I was interested to see what he would do. I’ll be fascinated to see it and he’s a very, very good actor so it’ll be exciting I think.” With regard to his incarnations feel in comparison to his predecessors, she added: “He is a fantastic actor, and I’m sure he will be very different.”
‘Different’ and ‘extraordinary’ seem to be the big words for this new Doctor, along with ‘dark’ and ‘rebellious’; could we be looking at the more adult turn that many ‘old school’ fans have been clamoring for? I for one would definitely welcome a slightly darker turn to the show, but then I’m a big fan of the Hinchcliffe era and all its Gothic splendor. Not that I don’t enjoy the lighter moments the show has given us in recent years; I just feel that there hasn’t been the balance of light and dark of late. Should Capaldi’s Doctor bring back the scares and edginess, I would hope it’s still got some laughs in there too. My guess would be that this is why we have the first post-regen episode featuring Vastra, Jenny and most importantly Strax, just to balance things out. Maybe I’m wrong – I guess we will find out in about 16 days.
So what are your thoughts; are you hoping for a dark Doctor, or do you fear it will be Colin Baker all over again? (Though I will defend Colin and his run to the hilt.) Perhaps you think this is all a big smoke screen and he will be as zany as Smith? Whatever your theory we want to hear it. Tell us your thoughts on the new Doctor below and we promise not to laugh.

Today is the day when everything changes: the Doctor Who World Tour commences today, in Cardiff where a special premiere of Deep Breath is being held at St David’s Hall.
That’s right, this is where the spoilers start sneaking out – or will they? Given the problems with the recent leak, it’s a surprise more hasn’t been divulged.
So let’s hope those lucky fans in Cardiff today are strong-willed enough to keep their lips sealed for a couple of weeks!
The red carpet event begins at 11am this morning, ending at 12 noon, at which point there will be a greeting and welcome speech, with the screening commencing at 12.40pm. Following this, a 30 minute Q&A with Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat will close the event. You can find full details of the itinerary at the St David’s Hall website, although we expect everyone who is going is already queuing up!
If you couldn’t make it, WalesOnline is featuring a regular update on their pages, while BBC Radio Wales’ Jason Mohammad is broadcasting from the red carpet live right now! From Cardiff, the Doctor Who World Tour then moves onto London this evening, and then the stars will be circumnavigating the globe over the next week or so, possibly coming to a city near you!
We’ll have some images for you throughout the day on this very post, so check back regularly.

Moffat Reveals Plans Afoot For More Online Doctor Who
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has been talking to SFX about the plans to produce more online episodes, following the success of The Night of the Doctor, the surprise 2013 hit that saw Paul McGann reprising the Eighth Doctor for the first time since his sole episode in 1996.
Moffat’s plans for online Doctor Who episodes will come as a surprise to few, especially given the content that has been produced over the past few years.
“We used to treat it as a spin-off that maybe some people would watch… But then you suddenly realise something like ‘Pond Life’, which we took much more seriously, had an audience of over six million. You think oh wait, that’s a TV show! That’s just a TV show and a lot of our audience make no distinction between that and the TV show. Same with ‘The Night of the Doctor’. What I think is quite exciting about all that stuff is you’re allowed to do a six minute episode.
“So there’s going to be more of that, up until the point when all television is like that. And it will be. All television will be downloadable content. It’s coming.”
To underline the plans – which we’re told are a general desire throughout the BBC, not just at BBC Wales – Moffat reveals that he’s been talking to the BBC iPlayer channe controller over funding. Essentially, these will be full dramas. “…we don’t call them prequels, we don’t call them minisodes, we just call them Doctor Who. That’s all they are. As I say, why not do an episode that’s ten minutes? Or an episode that’s half an hour? It depends what it suits.”
You can read more from Steven Moffat in the new issue of SFX, on sale now.
So, more online Doctor Who. Not “minisodes” – the industry has moved on, as have viewers’ expectations. Where will it all end? Secondary Doctor Who series or perhaps spinoffs?
What do you think?

Gallifrey Rises At Big Finish!
Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Every time Big Finish announce something new my bank account weeps, because everything they do is so damn good, you cant help but decide there and then that you must have it, and after every purchase you tell yourself “that’s it. No more for at least a few months” Then they announce something else and you look and you declare “I can live without food and gas for a while, take my money Big Finish”.
Ok, so I may be exaggerating, but only a little as this week we have had a string of rather fantastic deals from those fine folk as they celebrate 15 years of offering the finest audios this side of Gallifrey.
Which brings us neatly to this week’s big announcement; Gallifrey: Intervention Earth.
Yes one of the most popular spin offs from the show is coming back for a seventh outing, this time with a slightly different spin. “If the original Gallifrey series was conceived as Time Lords meets The West Wing, this is probably more akin to Time Lords meets 24,” explains producer Scott Handcock “It’s a proper rollercoaster ride that gives us an opportunity to delve a little deeper into the actions of the Celestial Intervention Agency and its agents.”
And if that isn’t enough to loosen your purse-strings (it was for me if I’m honest) the cast lined up for this two disc extravaganza should do it as Juliet Landau is back in the role of Romana, having taken on the mantle in ‘Luna Romana’ last year and series six of Gallifrey.
Alongside Juliet’s incarnation of Romana, Seán Carlsen returns as the ever-popular CIA Coordinator Narvin, joined this time round by Ace, played by Sophie Aldred who has now become a Time Lord-in-training and CIA operative. As the conspiracy develops, a pivotal figure from Time Lord society also makes his presence felt, with Stephen Thorne reprising his role as the original Gallifreyan madman, Omega for the first time since The Three Doctors in 1973! Not to mention appearances from the likes of Toby Longworth, Gyles Brandreth, Daniel Brocklebank, Scott Arthur, Laura Doddington, Toby Longworth, Rachel Atkins and Andrew Pepper.
Honestly, this is a series that excites me as I feel that Gallifrey is an aspect of the show that has never really been done justice on tv. It always felt as though it had the potential to be a superb Law and Order style break away show and thankfully Big Finish thought so too, and with the company’s recent Midas touch having the show take this turn can only lead to bigger and better things for the little spin off that could.
So what are your thoughts, have you given Gallifrey a try before? Are you are excited for this as I am, or are you not as interested in the non-Doctor specific series? Perhaps your one of those few who either have yet to experience Big Finish, or worse aren’t interested in Big Finish (seriously, give it a go, I promise you wont be disappointed)
Whatever your thoughts, we want to hear them. You know the drill by now, leave us a comment in the space below and lets get some discussion going.
