A Taste of Japanese Culture at Aragan Yokocho, Quill City Mall Kuala Lumpur

Growing up wasn’t always a happy memory for me. It’s filled with resentment of not being able to fit in, sibling rivalry alongside with loads of peer pressure. I wasn’t a good student too and I had to study real hard to make the grade and so school wasn’t always fun or a bed of roses. I always like my adult life better than my childhood where I am more in control of my life and the decision-making, but I won’t completely deny that my growing up years was quite interesting.

I brought quite a few things from my childhood into my adulthood; for example, my love and passion for Japanese manga and anime. I used to read manga and watch anime and still do to this very day. Among the famous manga/anime that I’m still watching today as an adult is Sailormoon Crystal, Dragonball Super, Fushigi Yuugi, Cardcaptor Sakura and Gundam SEED.

I have always been fascinated with the Japanese culture and sceneries that has been subtly portrayed in those anime and there are times I wish that I could visit Japan. But despite the fact that I am now an adult and I could visit Japan anytime I like, I still haven’t managed to visit Japan due to time restriction and work commitment. But call it sheer luck or a blessing if you will, I was given an opportunity to have a taste of what it is like to be in Japan without visiting Japan in person. Well, sort of.

Aragan Yokocho, Quill City Mall

 photo _DSC2445_zpszpjm2cd6.jpg

Aragan Yokocho derives it’s name from the Japanese word ‘Yokocho’ which means ‘small streets’ or ‘alley’. So Aragan Yokocho literally means the Aragan alley.

 photo _DSC2491_zpsn36vupr0.jpg

Boasting 18,848 sq. ft on the lower ground floor of Quill City Mall, Aragan Yokocho is the largest Japanese restaurant in Asia and replicates the dining experience in the mysterious alleys in Tokyo where all sort of delicious food are found.

 photo IMG_2295_zpsfngg0wij.jpg

The restaurant has 10 stations where each of these station serves a specific cuisine from Japan and is headed by a professional chef. The concept in Aragan Yokocho is somewhat similar to a foodcourt, except that all the stations belongs to one restaurant.

 photo PhotoGrid_1489140462281_zpsnflrdavo.jpg

The seating areas in Aragan Yokocho is divided into four sections according to the four seasons in Japan; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each of these sections are decorated in their respective season’s theme and diners can request to sit in any section that they feel most comfortable in.

 photo IMG_2283_zps6llirmaw.jpg

Spring, indicated by the row of bamboo deco

 photo IMG_2284_zpsazfxchb8.jpg

Summer, spacious and airy space.

 photo IMG_2288_zpsl7axb6n9.jpg

Autumn, a uniquely warm looking and picteresque section.

 photo IMG_2291_zpsoau0xsba.jpg

Winter one can definitelt get cozy in here.

 photo IMG_2285_zpsay7ygiri.jpg

Private booths for those who wants a more intimate dining session. Great for both business or pleasure.

 photo IMG_2294_zpslzo0defl.jpg

The Tatami Room, very homey and great for small families. Each table can accommodate 4 pax.

 photo 20170309_202517_zpsnljxsvf0.jpg

Environment and ambiance aside, ordering is fuss free in Aragan Yokocho. Every table in the restaurant is equipped with an iPad for ordering purpose and in true modern Japanese fashion where technology plays an important role in their daily lives, this provides an interactive ordering experience. All you need to to is just press and swipe away and you’re done. We were told that there are more than 200 types of Japanese food offered here in Aragan Yokocho. All seafood are air flown from Japan to Malaysia every week. So depending on what’s in season in Japan today, you’ll get the same here in Malaysia too, so do expect some changes in their menu from time to time.

There are plenty of things to choose from the menu, but patronizing it during dinner time, we had some appetizers and the dinner set instead.

 photo IMG_2388_zpssvw9vagz.jpg

Edamame. A preparation of immature soybeans in the pod The pods are grilled and served with salt.

 photo IMG_2401_zpsbtviq1lf.jpg

Hokke (RM19). This is actually grilled mackerel fish. Not a fan of this fish and all it’s tiny bones, but I did have a bit of this and it is really sweet and fresh. Highly recommended to fish lovers.

 photo IMG_2356_zpsj8waxi5f.jpg

Okonomiyaki (RM24.00 – RM26.00). Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning “how you like” or “what you like”, and yaki meaning “grill”. I particularly love this dish from Aragan Yokocho. One plate is not enough.

 photo IMG_2357_zpsg5sb24kt.jpg

Oyakodon(Chicken Donburi)(RM21). Oyakodon, literally “parent-and-child donburi”, is a donburi, or Japanese rice bowl dish, in which chicken, egg, sliced scallion, and other ingredients are all simmered together in a sauce and then served on top of a large bowl of rice. This one is delicious and makes quite a good comforting meal for a hungry tummy.

Aragan Yokocho is unique in the sense that it not only aimed to please their patrons with Japanese culinary delights but offers a unique Japanese cultural experience as well. Everything about it screams Japanese and Yukata (Japanese robe worn in the summer) are also provided for customers to wear and take photos with and here’s sharing with you memorable photos taken over there while wearing the Yukata provided by Aragan Yokocho.

Whether you’d like a quiet date with your partner or spouse, out for a good time catching up over a cuppa, dinner with with friends or gathering with colleague, I believe Aragan Yokocho is just the right place for you to be, considering the not only the food, service and ambiance is exceptionally splendid, but the price tag that’s attached to all of these are decently reasonable too.

Feast on Crabs at Ocean Seafood Restaurant, Bandar Puteri Puchong

I usually don’t revisit or frequent a restaurant unless they serve really outstanding food as I’m quite a picky eater but I made an exception for some restaurants. One of them is Ocean Seafood Restaurant in Bandar Puteri Puchong.

Having had a good dining experience in the restaurant a couple months back I decided to revisit with my foodie blogger friends and much to my pleasure, they are having crazy promos for crabs. To say that their crab dishes price is affordable is an understatement. The price for their Mud Crab with Roe dishes are practically rockbottom.

And so, we decided to have an insane crabby feast, and large ones at that.

The crab dishes that we tried:

Not wanting any of those appetizing gravy go to waste, we ordered two sets of Mantou to soak the gravy with and enjoy them after we polished off the crab.

And of course, knowing that the restaurant serves plenty of wonderful seafood dishes, we ordered other dishes along with rice to satisfy the glutton in us too.

A race against time

 photo received_452402751758318_zps3z3xq7pd.jpeg

Powerman, the pinnacle for duathlon competition globally, is the platform for ardent runners and cyclists to progress and master both sports. The championships held in Putrajaya last March upon a two-year hiatus witnessed the tremendous growth of duathletes in the region, with a record-breaking number of 2,645 participants starting the race, breaking the Malaysia Book of Records for the ‘Largest Participation of Duathlon Championships’ in Malaysia.Putrajaya is one of the admired locations to host Powerman with its picturesque landscape and well-equipped social amenities, giving participants a world-class championship.

Four adult categories namely the Individual Classic and Team Relay Classic (10km – 60km – 10km), and the Individual Short and Team Relay Short (5km – 30km – 5km), were made available for participants.

Powerman is a great stepping stone for regular runners and cyclists go beyond their limits. The four selected categories is specially catered to participants of different levels, from newcomers to seasoned enthusiasts. I welcome all single sport athletes to take part in Powerman as the new ground to explore and test their limits.

The proliferation of multi-sport athletes in the region is evident due to a growing trend in the multi-sports segment. Powerman is an accessible event for athletes to pursue a greater path by mastering an integrated sport.

The championship’s schedule has ensure a minimum overnight stay in Putrajaya, raising the host’s profile and increasing tourism dollars.  Primary tourism industries like the hospitality services, food and beverage are some of the businesses that has directly benefit from Powerman Asia Duathlon Championships 2017.

Discover Selangor: Affordable Shellout Dining at Apps Hotel, Kuala Selangor

Looking for a place to stay in Kuala Selangor? Well, there’s plenty of homestays and boutique hotels around in Kuala Selangor, but if you are looking for a place that is not so out of town or a place that is quite convenient with decent facilities, you might want to consider Apps Hotel.

 photo Slide101_zpsdiovz4k0.jpg

Apps Hotel Kuala Selangor is conveniently located at Kuala Selangor, near to Giant with close proximity to all the attraction of Kuala Selangor. Hotel services and facilities includes 24 hours security, broadband Internet access at public area, Muslim prayer room, ballroom and event space as well as inhouse restaurant that offers great food. I won’t be commenting much on the hotel itself, as I’ve yet to stay a night there but I’ve patronized it’s open air seafood restaurant and thought it was amazing.

 photo IMG_1615_zpsnxuygfb5.jpg

Apps hotel’s restaurant can fit quite a large crowd at one time, so it’s a perfect place for large gatherings with family and friends.

 photo IMG_1619_zps1p80c6tf.jpg

There are plenty of items on their menu but the latest is their Seafood Cajun Concept; or rather bucket boiled seafood/shellout dining.

 photo IMG_1582_zpsifmkd6zm.jpg

A closer look at the assorted raw seafood being offered at the restaurant. These will be made into bucket boiled ‘shellout’ dish. For those who are not familar with this concept, bucket boiled seafood is where loads of fresh seafood is dumped together into a bucket and boiled to perfection before being dumped on the table to be shared with a few diners.

Shellout at Apps Hotel, Kuala Selangor

Video of a bucketfull of seafood being poured out onto the table.

Shellout experience at Apps Hotel, Kuala Selangor

The bucketfull of seafood is usually enjoyed the old school way, by using bare hands to de-shell the crustaceans.

 photo BeautyPlus_20170307045519_save_zps5trnbcoh.jpg

Me, enjoying the seafood the old school way. You may request the chef to have the seafood merely boiled the traditional bucket way or cooked in certain ways. Being adventurous, my family and I opt for the flavourful ones.

Here’s some of the ‘seafood bucket boiled’ that we managed to try:

 photo IMG_1622_zpsuxcrl9cn.jpg

Assam pedas flavour (RM39.90 for 2-3pax); this one comes with a lot of gravy and very spicy. Goes well with piping hot rice. Great for those who loves to eat spicy food, but I wouldn’t exactly recommend it for those who is sharing their meal with children. They might not be able to tolerate the spiciness.

 photo IMG_1632_zpsvrrffhfq.jpg

Butter lemon flavour (RM39.90 for 2-3pax). This version of the seafood bucket boil is exeptionally delicious. Being someone who can’t really take spicy food, I love this one the most as I can practically taste the original sweetness of the seafood taste. Highly recommended.

 photo IMG_1666_zps2sad1g7d.jpg

Kam Heong flavour (RM39.90). Similar to the Assam Pedas flavour, this version of the bucket boiled seafood is very spicy. The only difference is that instead being cooked in Assam Pedas gravy, this one was cooked in curry paste with loads of dried chillies. This one is not too bad either, and I actually liked this better than the spicy Assam Pedas flavour, as while it is spicy, it is much easier to eat and creates less mess in the aftermath. Recommended to spicy food lovers, but not recommended to young children who might not be able to tolerate spicy food.

 photo IMG_1643_zpscooigjgy.jpg

Top: Tomyam in Young Coconut Shell. Bottom: Tomyam Seafood. A must try if you like soupie dishes. These may look spicy but don’t let the appearance fool you. They’re not spicy at all but sourish instead. Quite appetizing and goes well with plain rice. Personally I love the Tomyam in Young Coconut more than the normal version. The young coconut flesh absorbed the soup nicely and gives off quite a unique flavour that makes it pretty addictive to feast on.

 photo IMG_1652_zpsnkbzajn9.jpg

Deep Fried Kangkung in Tempura style. These are actually kangkung (water convulvulous) dipped in thin layer of floury batter and deep fried. They’re adeptly fried and served with sweet Thai sauce. Works well as appetizer and goes well with plain white rice. One plate of this is never enough and if you are dining with a few friends, you might want to order extra as they are pretty addictive.

Overall the dining experience in Apps Hotel open air seafood restaurant is fantastic. Great food, timely service and accomodating staffs. Definitely will be a restaurant of choice should I ever drop by Kuala Selangor again.

Drifting with Blastacars Drift Karts in Kuala Lumpur

Being an Adrenaline junkie and having heard that Blastacars Drift Karts has finally arrived in Kuala Lumpur, I knew I had to check it out.

This place is located on the 5th floor Sungei Wang Plaza building and is offering the racing experience of a lifetime.

 photo 20170303_145711_zpsuawxcbcp.jpg

The karts have been developed since 1987 in New Zealand by the creator Peter Zyp with one goal in mind; to drift.

 photo 20170303_145642_zpsxwhgehfn.jpg

The karts are safe and built for tough use and they consist of powerful engines and a unique design, they can race around the track sliding where they can drift around corners.

Me checking out the Blastacar Drift kart before racing, to see if I can handle it comfortably. Not to be confused with the regular go karts, these are hand crafted, powerful karts that drift on purpose built, indoor tracks. These custom made to drift karts offer you a unique and thrilling drive experience. The karts are longer and thinner than a go kart, allowing for a comfortable ride position and easier overtaking and the unique surface mean you can drift and slide around the track whilst maintaining control. Steering and handling the karts is surprisingly easy and not as tiring on the arms and legs like a go kart, as you only need to speed up all the way.

The track has a unique slippery surface and custom design, built for over 10 karts to race on at once. The track is fully indoors, so you can race in rain or shine, day or night.

All set for a heart pumping race, helmet and all.

Blastacar Drift Kart Racing at Sungei Wang Plaza

A word of warning; Don’t think you can just hold your accelerator around the whole track. There is enough power and momentum to send your karts sliding into corners. You will need to give a good amount of counter steer and throttle control to ensure you can maintain the drift on a corner and then with a quick switch you will be drifting into the next. For a non racer and casual driver like me, putting up a good race is quite a challenging feat, but it was an Adrenaline pumping experience nevertheless.

One for the album. My friends and I had an exciting race experience with a solid performing engine more powerful than an average go kart.

If you’ve been playing go-kart and love a good race on track, you might enjoy drifting in Blastacars Drift Karts too, so do hop over to have a drift of your life.

Note: Blastacars Drift Kart is build to suit all sort of racers’ needs, but racers need to be at least 8 years old and have a height minimum of 1.2 metres.

Price as stated below:

RM60 for 10 mins (Novice)

Where to Chillax with Friends in Kuala Lumpur: Oddity Cafe

 photo 20170303_165113_zpsp2llxgkt.jpg

Fancy a cuppa tea or coffee with friends? Here’s one place that serves quite some decent coffee and tea with some nice comforting pasta and dessert; Oddity Cafe.

Oddity Cafe gains it’s name from the root of ‘odd’. Generally, it can mean strange, but according to the owner, the name is chosen as the cafe’s direction is to stand out in the crowd and be different. The cafe itself is not that large. It can acommodate at most 12 person in the outlet and 6 at the corridoor of the outlet, making it a great place for some intimate catching up session.

Their menu is pretty straight forward and minimilist. They are offering assorted coffee, tea, pasta and pastries for your dining pleasure.

I managed to drop by with my girlfriends and here’s some of the things we ordered:

 photo 20170303_163937_zps3ookeuaw.jpg

Iced Caffe Mocha (RM11.90). I’m not much a coffee drinker. I always prefer tea over coffee, but I tried this Iced Caffe Mocha nevertheless. It tasted like how it should taste like. A perfect concoction of bittersweetness and chocolaty flavours all married to each other.

Seafood Marinara (RM6.90) was topped generously with simple marinara sauce and freshly cooked mussels. Quite nice, but if you don’t have an acquired taste for mussels, you might want to ask the cook to omit the mussels and have them replace the mussels with prawns instead.

 photo 20170303_164035_zps9awqxtcw.jpg

Grilled Chicken Aglio Olio (RM6.90) was not my favourite. Why? Well, I’m not a fan of broccoli florets and this dish have loads of them. The presentation of this dish almost resemble a bouquet of broccoli. But don’t let my preference stop you from enjoying this dish. It is filled with wholesome goodness and great for those who wants plenty of greens in their diet.

Spaghetti Carbonara (RM6.90). Rich, creamy and savoury, this is everyone’s favourite plate of pasta at Oddity Cafe. It’s the perfect comfort food that goes well hand in hand with the beverages sold here.

Brownies with Vanilla Ice Cream (RM9.90) is just perfect to end our meal with.

Chocolate Muffin (RM7.90). Makes great companion to those bittersweet coffees sold here.

Delivery and takeaway services is also available at Oddity Cafe. Here’s the takeaway/delivery version of the assorted pastas.

Overall dining experience at this cafe is quite a pleasant one. Their coffees are good too and I guess a revisit is in order soon.
