Must Try Traditional Delights in Selangor, Malaysia

Being the gateway and the centre of Malaysia, Selangor has an impossible number of food choices from around all the 14 states of the country. Often being overlooked is Selangor’s own gastronomical delights that have been carried down from centuries and its tradition still remains as is. Due to Selangor’s history of former migration back in the early years, some of its settlers were people from different background and country that have resulted Selangor to become culturally diverse. Hence, making the food rich in flavours! Now, giving you the best of Selangor, we highlight here the traditional flavours for you to try making at home.

Pecal

Pecal is a common appetiser that can be found just about anywhere in Selangor. Known to be a traditional Javanese salad that merely consists of vegetables topped with a mouth-watering peanut sauce that can also be served with Ketupat or Lontong. The preparation in making Pecal is extremely simple so you can easily try it at home at any time! The key ingredients to prepare this dish are peanuts or groundnuts for the gravy or which we call ‘kuah’, tofu, bean sprout, long beans and cucumber. It is that easy. So, what are you waiting for? Give it a try now!

Nasi Ambeng

Nasi Ambeng is usually served in a form of a platter which can be shared with four to five people per serving. It consists of a variety of food choices that will just blow your mind. When it comes to preparing this Javanese-Malay dish, you should not miss out on its side dishes which are chicken, fried noodles, long beans, sambal tempe accompanied by white rice that is served in banana leaf! In Selangor, Nasi Ambeng is normally served at festivals or large gatherings or locally known as ‘Kenduri’.

Sambal Taun

Known as Sambal Taun or Sambal Tahun, this unique dish is famous among Selangorians. It originates from the Javanese early settlers and has become a traditional food of Selangor ever since. This dish is said to be spicy because of the amount of chili used in its preparation. Hence, the name sambal. Here in Selangor, the protein is taken from cow skin but it is commonly switch to either clams, cow lungs or even anchovies, according to one’s preference. Other ingredients needed to complete this one of a kind main dish are red onions, garlic, shrimp paste, coconut milk, oil, tamarind paste, a pinch of salt and sugar. In the past, it is believed that this dish was served during Eid celebration!

Wadai Kipeng

In the tongue of the Banjar people, ‘Wadai’ predominantly means ‘Kuih’, while ‘Kipeng’ is refers to pieces. Back in the day, it has been traditionally practiced by the Banjar community to plate up Wadai Kipeng on their Thanksgiving ceremony! It goes without saying, to prepare this porridge-like dessert, the must-have ingredients are glutinous rice flour, coconut, palm sugar, granulated sugar and some pandan leaves! This is a perfect sweet ending to your meal.

Bahulu Kemboja

We named it the ‘old-timers’ favourite traditional kuih that is still popular up to this day. Bahulu Kemboja can be served whenever you like, be it for breakfast, or even during teatime, well you choose! Having its own speciality, this kuih is sold widely but it is undeniably though to find one that taste as original as the Selangor one today. You can always try making one at home and you may be surprised at what good of a cook you are! To maintain the uniqueness and moisture of the kuih, the ingredients needed are original pandan essence straight from its leaves, wheat flour, rice flour, some coconut milk, eggs, sesame seeds for topping and of course, sugar and salt to give taste!

It is truly a blessing to have such amazing flavours and dishes in just one state. From appetisers, main dishes, desserts and teatime snacks, all these traditional cuisine is a reflection of how splendid Selangor can be!

Inspiring Children During Covid-19 Crisis, One Story at A Time with #SaveWithStoriesMY

Covid-19 has undeniably affected our lifestyles. It’s not easy to adapt to the new normal, but life goes on and we all need to adapt and make the best out of the situation. In braving the Covid-19 Crisis, the way of education in Malaysia has undergone drastic changes and classrooms has mostly been digitalised and been taken online.

In line with Malaysian government’s efforts to encourage reading and literacy among young children in Malaysia, especially the special needs and the underprivileged ones, AFO Radio recently partnered with Traqkid, Kiwanis Malaysia and VGI Transit to encourage reading among children with the #SaveWithStoriesMY campaign.

Inspired by celebrities in the United States who launched an Instagram account that features celebrities and other notable figures reading children’s books under a fundraising project called Save With Stories,  the Malaysian version of Save With Stories program will be told  in three languages namely Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and English. Each story aims to raise the awareness of reading among young children by selecting interesting children’s stories that will inspire the interest of viewers or listeners to listen and develop a culture of reading.

The highlight of this storytelling project is that each stories is read by an individual who may be a celebrity, a radio announcer or a popular individual on their choice of social media platforms.

William Lim, Chief Executive Officer of AFO Radio explained, “This MCO we saw many people getting involved in helping the underprivileged and we wanted to do our part. When we stumbled across Save With Stories online, we thought it is a wonderful campaign that we can adopt here in Malaysia.”

“We wanted to work with partners that can further enhance this initiative and were fortunate to find Traqkid, who provides solutions surrounding kids’ health, safety and environment, Kiwanis Malaysia that has a history of over 45 years in the promotion for the  betterment of children and VGI Transit who will support awareness of this campaign through its advertising platforms.”

“Each of us will use our capabilities to help raise the awareness of the importance of reading in education and at the same time appeal to donors to fund our campaign to help the less fortunate children.  And what better way to do this than with our very own celebrities to help read to the children and their parents.  We hope this campaign will help inculcate a reading habit with children especially now that we are all confined at home,” added William.

“Traqkid wanted to make a difference in everything we do for our children. Education is the foundation of knowledge and with everything going digital, listening online is the new trend to go. Having a platform such as AFO Radio to help broadcast this campaign on air and online will truly reach out to many people,” says Simon Chin, CEO of Traqkid and also the President Elect of Kiwanis Club of Damansara Uptown.

Kiwanis has been in Malaysia over 45 years. Currently we have 20 permanent projects representing centres for children with special needs established and managed by various Kiwanis clubs all over Malaysia.  These centres run intervention program, job training and other skills development.  Beneficiaries of these centres are mainly children with Down Syndrome, Dyslexia, Autism, ADHD, slow learners and other physical or mental conditions.  With SaveWithStoriesMY, our aim is to raise RM100,000. The money will be used to continue our efforts in providing the under privileged education and also to feed those in need.

“We had embarked on digitalization project to support the Kiwanis clubs and community since 18 months ago.  It is timely that phase 1 of the project was recently completed with the revamped website & payment portal with 2C2P.   A few of clubs have been able to take advantage of this project to raise more than RM40,000 online for families affected by the Covid 19 pandemic,” said Dr Laurence Lim, Governor of Kiwanis Malaysia District added.

The #SaveWithStoriesMY campaign kickstarted a week ago has already garnered an impressive pool of celebrities in the likes of Deborah Henry -Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 & Miss Malaysia World 2007, Carey Ng – Miss Malaysia Universe 2013, Steve Yap – Actor, Wan Wai Fun – previously MYFM announcer & actress and not forgetting Selene and Kym who are both anchor radio announcers at AFO Radio, just to name a few.  Many more postings can be found via Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/savewithstoriesmy) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/savewithstoriesmy).

The objective of #SavewithstoriesMY to inspire everyone to read as well as raise funds to support projects that will help children to gain access to books and education materials, improve their wellbeing and education programs that will nurture their overall development. The campaign will continue throughout Covid-19 Crisis and beyond.

Domino’s Pizza is Blasting With All New Delicious Durian Lava Cake

So, it’s been what? More than 40 days since the government enforced the lockown in effort to battle the Covid-19. And I’ll be completely honest with you, while everyone’s else is picking up on culinary skills and showing off the fruit of their labour on social media while they’re staying home during the quarantine period, I’m still sadly lacking in that department. It’s not that I did not make any efforts but I simply couldn’t pick up the skill, especially baking. Sure, making simple meals is fine, but anything else beyond the frying pan or the microwave is off limits to me, and I’m better off ordering food online. One of my favourite platform to order food is the FoodPanda.

FoodPanda is an online delivery apps that allows users to order food from restaurants that’s nearby their location. It’s an awesome apps and have been somewhat my lifesaver throughout the quarantine period. They have alot of riders who are on standby to deliver your orders and you’re basically spoiled for choices. FoodPanda have plenty of restaurants listed in their apps. Want to eat Korean food? They got it. Craving for desserts or cakes? They got it too. Everything is within clicks away and you can also schedule your order in advance instead of having your food delivered straight away. A perfect plan for those who are busy working from home and sometimes forgets the track of time to take care of their meals. Price-wise, FoodPanda is always offering discounts and free deliveries, so it’s quite kind on the pocket too.

Anyway, I was craving for some pastries and something rich and sweet, and so I searched for something to order on FoodPanda and discovered that Domino’s Pizza has just introduced their new Durian Lava Cake.

This newly released sweet dessert is a marriage between the classic lava cake and the king of fruits, durian. Made from luscious and decadent D24 durian flesh, it’s a guarantee to satisfy any durian lover’s cravings. In the time where social distancing is the new norm, one can no longer hunt for durians on the street, and this is probably the next best thing to a freshly opened durian on the sidewalk.

Having second thoughts about trying this exotic desserts? Well, Domino’s Pizza promises that their Durian Lava Cake is specially crafted in a special way to mask the smell of durian without compromising on the flavors. The hint of durian flavor offers a unique taste, while the exquisite center filling gives it a distinctive and unforgettable experience, so I think it’s worth a shot.

The Durian Lava Cake is available from April 6 onwards. But in line with the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, Domino’s operating hours may differ as per permitted operating hours according to local councils in each state. Its commitment to the safety of its delivery riders and customers is evident with the implementation of its mandatory Zero Contact services, so don’t worry guys, just order away from FoodPanda and give yourself a decadent sweet treat.

BBQ Lamb Kemensah Delivery

So, due to the Covid19, my country has somewhat being forced into a lockdown and I’ve been obediently staying at home for a month. I’m not feeling really okay. I’m an outdoor person and this feels like being in a home arrest more than anything else. To date, I haven’t even stepped my feet beyond my house’s gate and I’ve been hoping that things will get back to normal soon.

I’m thought of the good old times and I realized that I’ve been missing the food at BBQ Lamb Kemensah so badly, and so when I heard they are offering deliver service throughout the quarantine period, I knew I had to have it, since my home is 10km within their delivery coverage.

Here’s what I got for lunch the other day; Smokey Chicken Rice and Smokey Duck Rice

Smokey Duck Rice (RM17), deliciously smoked duck slices served with a side of fragrant herb rice and a garden of pickled vegetable salad, sauces and soup. I don’t usually like ducks because they are gamey, but these are to die for. There duck slices have gamey smell whatsoever and I certainly wouldn’t mind a second helping of this anytime.

Smokey Chicken Rice (RM15). A generous amount of smoked chicken served with a side of fragrant herb rice and a garden of pickled vegetable salad, sauces and soup for you to wash down your meal with.

If there’s anything that I like about the whole set meals is that they have thoughfully put together a garden of pickled veggies on the side for you to go with your rice with. I like how the pickled veggies complement and enhanced the savouriness of both the herb rice and meat.

Now, although the food is of first class in quality, it is srill not the same as dining in the river like it’s supposed to meant to be. If you’ve ever visited BBQ Lamb Kemensah prior to MCO, you’ll understand what I mean.

Check out my old posts here:

Here’s sharing with you the delivery menu, in case you’d like to order some yummylicious food from BBQ Lamb Kemensah too:

It’s just a great treat to share with everyone and can be fun to pass around the table too.

“We are very excited that we have put together this new addition to the family of NIPS and able to hit the spot with all Malaysian Muslims who are celebrating the festivity. We wanted

flavours to pop and also wanted to have an added flavour in the chocolate that has a close connection to Hari Raya. I think we managed to find the essence of the right fruit for the celebration to go with our chocolate to keep our customers fully satisfied.”

Asyraf Khalid Bengang Dituduh Guna Kabel Ayah Demi Memajukan Perniagaan?

KUALA LUMPUR: Lagi lagi Datuk K?

“Setiap hari kami kena kerja keras.

Sedari dulu, Asyraf hanya mahu membanggakan ayahnya.

Stay At Home During Quarantine Period with The Book You Love

If you are part of the ‘work-from-home’ crowd that has been practising self-isolation and with a further extension of the Restriction of Movement Order (RMO) to 14 April 2020, chances are you are in a rather demoralised state. This is probably due to the endless Covid-19 memes that are rampant in social media feeds and the constant dispiriting news updates about the rise of cases globally. Some have taken to pass time during this period by cleaning their houses, making group video calls to friends and family or even making ‘Dalgona Coffee’, a creamy drink that has been going viral.

During this period of anxiety and ambiguity, a valuable habit that some of us may have side-lined over the years or have never picked up, is the simple habit of reading. In contemporary times, many people have dropped off reading due to busy work schedules or from too many distractions. With the current pandemic, however, reading and books in general has only become more valuable with the extra time in hand. This is because it is a great way to tune off all of the negative noise, to improve yourself to brace for a new ‘normal’ and to truly immerse yourself in a good, old-fashioned book. Here is a list of five titles with affordable prices to add to your bookshelf to heal you through the power of books:

The book includes fresh and tangible ideas you may not have thought of and simple ideas that you needed reminding on. If you ever feel down, just pick up this book again.

As the world steps into an unprecedented era, many individuals may be taking another look at their lives and reconsidering the choices that they have made. How Soon is Now? From Personal Initiation to Global Transformation by Daniel Pinchbeck discusses essential transformations needed at both a personal and global level to solve problems posed by climate change as well as other imperative environmental issues. The book even proposes solutions to these issues by covering thoughts by different thinkers including Carl Jung and Jack Kerouac. Pinchbeck poses a very real question of: Can the human race survive? The author further explores subjects such as spirituality in this all-encompassing book.

The title of Move Fast and Break Things: How Facebook, Google, and Amazon Cornered Culture and Undermined Democracy by Jonathan Taplin is based off of Mark Zuckerberg’s now famous motto which captures how entrepreneurs regard disruption: that more is always better. The book allows a better understanding of the business models, ideologies and personalities such as Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos behind the rise of the internet and the impact it has had on culture. The author is also a proponent of re-decentralizing the web which is monopolised by companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon that determine the future of the music, film, television, publishing and news industries.

In recent years, adult colouring has exploded in popularity. In many bookstores, there are even designated shelves to cater to this phenomenon. Those who find the simple activity nostalgic are actually turning to it to while away time as it is a great way to focus on the present to achieve mindfulness. Anxious working adults will find the activity therapeutic and calming. There are many themed books available such as those of flowers, animals, cities and even ones on specific books such as Alice in Wonderland. These colouring books typically have intricate designs printed on high quality paper such as this one: Inspiring Animals that features 88 pages and includes six colouring pencils. You do not have to have the skills of Claude Monet or be particularly creative to colour in a page. The feeling when you complete a page will be that of gratification!

Reading fantasy novels is a great form of escapism and what is better than one fantasy book, is a gripping, six title series. The Mortal Instruments Box Set Book 1- 6 by Cassandra Clare will keep readers busy for a week or more, depending on how fast you are able to devour the pages. It features all six books in the series: City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls and City of Heavenly Fire. The series revolves around Clary, who is no ordinary fifteen-year-old. She gets caught up in the world of Shadowhunters, who are warriors dedicated to eliminating demons from the world. She is soon drawn to Jace, a mysterious boy with golden-blond hair and pale scars from years of applying various magical runes. Supernatural creatures, romance and betrayal make the series an absolute page-turner.
