Petrosains Fam Trip: Sultans of Science
What did you do last weekend? Weekend is usually very mundane to me, but last weekend was spectacular. I’ve joined a familiarization trip to Petrosains, KLCC along with some other bloggers like Smallkucing, Ku Jie and many more to travel back in time to the Golden Age of the Islamic World (700-1700 CE), a time where ingenious Muslim scholars made scientific and technological breakthroughs that have influenced modern society.
Bloggers were allowed to bring their respective spouses and family and we were given a chance to explore an exhibition that is known as ‘Sultan of Science’. The traveling exhibition showcases nine main fields of Islamic scientific endeavour – mathematics and navigation, astronomy, medicine, instrument making, fine technology and invention, optics, engineering, architecture and flight.
I was amazed to see the things in the exhibition. Truthfully, the folks back then were seriously ahead of their time where technology is concerned. And having seen the exhibition, I noticed that there are loads of notable discoveries and inventions currently attributed to Western scientists were, in fact, first made by Muslim scholars.
Water clock
Perpetual flute
The magic flask
Wudhu machine- a machine that is invented to make wudhu easier. Wudhu is an Islamic procedure for washing parts of the body using water, typically in preparation for formal prayers. Muslims are also required to be clean when handling and reading the Holy Quran. Permitted water types for wudhu is rain water, spring, sea or river water, water of melting snow or hail, well water, etc.
Rock and pinion cam
Four bolt lock
Crankshaft, an 800 years old invention that converts rotary into linear motion, a mechanism used in many modern engines.

A combination lock.
Voyage of Zheng exhibition. He was formerly romanized as Cheng Ho. A Hui-Chinese-Muslim court eunuch, mariner, explorer, diplomat and fleet admiral, who commanded voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Somalia and the Swahili coast. Traces of his exploits can be seen in our own country; Malacca.
An exhibition item
An exhibition item that shows you how actually birds fly.
Math and algebra section
Optical illusion exhibition
Another exhibit item. Quite awesome to fiddle around with.
Surgical tools used to perform surgeries back during the ancient times.
invented by Abu al-Qasim Khalaf ibn al-Abbas Al-Zahrawi (936–1013). He is known in the West as Albucasis, was an Arab Muslim physician who lived in Al-Andalus. He is considered the greatest medieval surgeon to have appeared from the Islamic World, and has been described by many as the father of modern surgery. His greatest contribution to medicine is the Kitab al-Tasrif, a thirty-volume encyclopedia of medical practices.
His pioneering contributions to the field of surgical procedures and instruments had an enormous impact in the East and West well into the modern period, where some of his discoveries are still applied in medicine to this day.
Dental surgery tools
Eye surgery tools
Bone surgery tools
Astrological exhibit- The quadrant, an instrument that is used to measure angles up to 90°.
First page of a manuscript on ‘Deciphering Cryptographic Messages’.
Ancient book on botany and zoology.
Ancient book on astronomy
Back during the ancient times, the Arabs-Muslim used plenty of natural herbs and spices to make perfume. We were shown the method too during the exhibition.
Apart from getting to play with exhibition items, there was also science show and demo in the Sultan of Science Exhibition. It’s fun and interactive and requires a lot of audience’s participation.
There was also magic show during the fam trip. Performed by Edison Lim.
Group photo: Bloggers and family.
One thing I love about the exhibition in Petrosains (including the Sultan of Science) is that we’re allowed to touch and experiment with the exhibition items, unlike the exhibitions in museums, where you can only see and admire, but cannot touch anything at all. That, and that alone makes the place enjoyable for family with young children who more often than not, would love to touch things that they see instead of just looking at them. A truly an-eye opening experience not only for me, but for my entire family too.
If you’re looking for a fun-filled activity for the entire family this upcoming school holiday, I daresay a visit to Petrosains for the Sultan of Science exhibition is quite a good bet.
Below is the opening hours, in case you’re interested in going:
Tue / Wed / Thu / Fri 9.30 am 4.00 pm 5.30 pm
Sat / Sun / Public Holiday 9.30 am 5.00 pm 6.30 pm
Mondays closed (except for Public Holidays)
Open on all public holidays with the exception of Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji.

How to get over a bad breakup?
How do you exactly get over a bad breakup? Well, I’m not qualified to advise those who are going through a bad breakup, but a good friend from school called me up yesterday and told me that things did not work out between her and her long term boyfriend (again!) and she was feeling all gloomy about it because her relative is getting married soon and she does not have a date to bring to the reception. I’m not really sure how to advise her, as she sounded really heartbroken when she spoke to me. She was practically sobbing away.
I married my first love, and I suppose I can say that I’ve been spared from horrendous episodes of breakups with my boyfriend(s), and not knowing how to advise people who are going through such a difficult phase, I usually tell people who confided in me to:
Keep the good memories but forget the bad ones
Keep yourself occupied so that you won’t think too much.
Make new memories every day. Go to places that you never go before, eat things that you never eat with the person that you’re breaking up with before, buy things that you’ve never bought with the person that you’re breaking up before, and live your life as you want to. Meet new people, travel to new places, etc.
Stop stalking their Facebook wall or Twitter
Stop calling or miss-calling
Stop texting
Not sure if the tips will work, but I believe that everyone deserves a second chance at love, and it is up to you on whether to seize it or not. Sure, you can sit there and be upset about it for months or even years and waste away but the fact will remain the same and you’ll never be happy if you don’t let go of the bad relationship. Why torture yourself when you can have a second chance at happiness? We only live once, so we should seize whatever chance and opportunities with both hands.
I believe in second chance, regardless how bad a long term relationship or even marriage turns out to be. Everyone deserves a second chance at happiness, so don’t let one or two bad relationship eats your youth away.
Cleffairy: Everyone deserves a second chance at happiness.

Here’s some clue:
The T-REX lives in an indoor pre-historic oasis.

Crack on the wall
The neighbour upstairs have been drilling their wall for God knows how many days now, and I ‘ve come to notice that this long crack appeared beautifully after a loud bang this morning. (See vid) I’m not very sure if it’s my imagination, but the crack seems to grow longer than when I first noticed it.
Looking at this long crack on the wall made me wonder if I should start to concern myself with safety issue? Or should I just go back to sleep and pretend that I did not see this? Not to sound paranoid or anything, but people are known to be buried alive in collapsed apartments…though cases like that are much rarer than dying in an auto accidents or something.
So, back to sleep, or out of the place? I don’t know!

Giving Back In Penang Shan Children’s Home
Bloggers and public alike mostly from the surrounding Penang area, visited The Ramakrishna Ashrama, Children Protection Society & Shan’s Children Home, to promote local children’s home with the trend setting channel – digital media.

The aim of this project is to distribute food, beverages and gadgets, sponsored by various commercial entities. At the same time, this is to encourage bloggers in assisting some corporate bodies in executing their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Corporate Social Responsibility is basically about the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute towards the economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large. In short, it’s a philanthropic exercise not only by businesses but by everyone to give back to the society, thus making life more bearable for everyone in need.
Penang Shan Children’s Home (PSCH) began as a dream and initiative of Dr. S Balakrishnan in the year 2005. This is a non-religious and a non-profit, non-governmental organization catering to the needs of orphans, neglected children, dysfunctional families and single parents. The home was built and officially launched on 14th December 2008 by Madam Chan Siew Har. PSCH’s mission is to maximize the attractive opportunities that are stored in the children; to make something happen; to change the ways that things are and to create something that no one else has ever created before for the children, to explore for opportunities; to provide guidance and course correction; maintaining focus on being consistent and persistent. The objectives are both short and on a long term basis. The short term objective is to provide all the children with a safe and supportive environment. The focus will be on the development of physical, mental, emotional, educational, social and recreational skills that will create awareness to structure and mould the child’s future. The longer term development includes the options that are available for the child’s future, supporting them to complete the tertiary education preferably to University level. For those who are unable to complete the basic education, they would be trained in developing their skills by educating them in skill training centers. Through home visits and working with parents, they would like to ensure that eventually the child is reunited with his/her family thus becoming the backbone of the family.
How to help Penang Shan Children’s Home Association?
1. Adopt-A-Child Program
The average monthly expenditure per child amounts to RM400. This includes lodging, education, meals, transportation and pocket money. Interested members of the public can contact the home.
2. Donation
The home solely depends on donation to meet the relatively high running cost. They would be very grateful members of the public or private companies can step forward to contribute a one-off or monthly fixed donation. Interested entity can contact the home.

Bloggers Help to Spread Love for the Children at the Children’s Protection Society
[image error]
Quite some time ago, a handful of bloggers were given a chance to give back to the society by volunteering in The Children’s Protection Society.
The Children’s Protection Society (CPS) began as an initiative of Dato’ Nazir Ariff when he was President of the Rotary Club in Penang (1991). It is a non-profit, non-governmental organization catering to the needs of neglected and/or abandoned children in Penang.
It was officially launched in April 1992 by Puan Sri Chua Kah Peng. The objectives of CPS are both immediate and longer-term. The immediate objective is to provide children at risk with a safe, supportive and conducive environment (Shelter). Their concerned and focused areas include the emotional and physical development, education, social and recreational skills. At the same time, CPS aims to work with parents and other family members, so that the child can eventually be reunited with his/her family.
In the pipeline, they hope to support projects to enhance community-based facilities for childcare and development in areas where such facilities are lacking. They also try to promote a more general awareness of the issues relating to children at risk by being involved in training and discussions. Hence they work together with various government and non-government organizations to help to develop longer-term strategies and goals.
How to help Children’s Protection Society?
1. Become a Volunteer: http://www.cpspg.org.my/webpages/help.html
Learning and Tuition is always needed – many of our children have missed a substantial amount of school due to their backgrounds, and often find it difficult to catch up with school work. If you are prepared for the extra challenges which many of our children face, and are prepared to commit a regular time a week (can be anything from an hour up).
2. Sponsor-A-Child Program: http://www.cpspg.org.my/webpages/help02.html
Talk to any of our staff if you are interested to sponsor a child
3. Donation: http://www.cpspg.org.my/webpages/help03.html
If you want to make a financial donation, please send cheques (payable to Children’s Protection Society Pulau Pinang) to CPS at 118-A Jalan Scotland, 10450 Penang. CPS is a registered charity home with the Welfare Department so donations will be tax-exempt.
4. Sponsoring an Activity or Outing: http://www.cpspg.org.my/webpages/help04.html
CPS organizes many activities for the children, staff and volunteers. We welcome sponsorship of specific activities. Give us a call if you have any ideas of your own, or would like to hear from us on what sort of activities you could sponsor.

Maha Kumbh Mela
Imagine a crowd so massive, it is visible from space. A crowd, likely 100 million strong intent on just one thing: bathing in a sacred river to wash away sins and gain a chance at a new beginning.
Once every 12 years, Hindus from around the world converge at Sangam in Allahabad, India, at the convergence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers. It is known as the Maha Kumbh Mela, and it is not only the world’s largest religious festival, it is also believed to be the largest gathering of humans in one place, at one time on earth. The festival began on January 14 and lasts through March 10.
The Kumbh Mela is a mass gathering of Hindus from across India and around the world in a place where the Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers converge in Allahabad, India, called the sangam.
Astrology determines most aspects of the festival, including its exact date and length. Where the festival is held also depends on the position of Jupiter, the sun and moon.
This year, the Maha Kumbh Mela will last 55 days, starting on January 14th and ending on March 10th. The festival has been held on the banks of the Ganges for thousands of years. There are different kinds of kumbh: an ardh (or half) kumbh is held every six years at two set locations; a purna (full) kumbh is held at Allahabad every 12 years. A Maha Kumbh Mela happens once every 144 years.
The Kumbh Mela is held at Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik every three years but the Kumbh at Allahabad has a special significance, where it is held at Sangam, the confluence of the rivers Ganga-Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. The official site for Kumbh Mela says “The Prayag (Allahabad) Kumbh Mela is the largest and holiest of all melas and is believed to be the most auspicious” More than 100 million people are expected to attend the 55-day festival in 2013. In 2001, nearly 70 million flocked to the Ganges’ shores of the Ganges for the Purna Kumbh Mela.
The origin of the Kumbh Mela religious festival comes from a legend describing a war between gods and demons over possession of the elixir of eternal life or the “nectar of immortality.”According to the legend the “kumbh” was the container that held “the immortal nectar” of the gods. It is believed that a few drops of this elixir fell to earth at four places during various times of these battles. These four places are where the rivers are believed to possess mystical powers. Because the gods and demons battled back and forth for twelve days and twelve “days” for the gods are equivalent to 12 years for humans, the Kumbh Mela is celebrated once every 12 years in each of these four places – Haridwar, Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad.
