Kembara #dekatje: 4×4 Jungle Trekking Ride

2015 is definitely an adventurous year for me. Not only I went birdwatching and explore mangrove forest in the rain, but rock climbing and river tubing as well. Most of these priceless experience is courtesy of our good friends in Tourism Malaysia Selangor. They have been going all out to promote undiscovered gems in Selangor, and it’s been an honour and privilege to join them in their quest to bring in more visitors and tourists to explore and experience Selangor.

Another precious thing that my family and I get to experience during our previous trip with Tourism Malaysia Selangor is the extreme jungle trekking with a 4WD or 4×4.

If you have been following my blog post or have been watching videos on the Kembara #dekatje series on my family’s YouTube channel, you would realize that Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre provide all kinds of packages to cater your team building and family day needs, and that includes extreme sports like abseiling, tubing, river crossing and jungle trekking. While we did not manage to experience abseiling and river crossing during our trip to Kalumpang, we did get to enjoy river tubing and jungle trekking in a 4×4 vehicle.

Here’s sharing with you our experience trekking the jungle in a 4×4 drive. 4×4

translates to a vehicle with 4 wheels powered by 4 wheels that can go all direction in rough terrains.

Our ranger and jungle guide, with our rugged 4×4 jungle trekking ride.

Here’s us, prepping our photography equipments and getting into our ride. One 4×4 vehicle can accommodate up to a maximum of 8 passengers.

 photo IMG_9547_zpsotbnon5e.jpg

Our rough adventure begins. We departed just after our snacking session and seriously had no idea that the ride would most probably make us lose the snacks in the tummy if we had motion sickness. Yes. It was really a rough ride. I’d likened it to riding a terribly bumpy roller coaster without the seatbelts or going through an earthquake in a small room without any actual thing to hang on to.

Venturing deeper into the jungle

 photo IMG_9571_zpsahk3g1ae.jpg

After about 30 minutes of a rough ride or so, our vehicle got stuck in a huge hole and we got stuck in the middle of the jungle. Did I feel scared? Strangely, no. In fact, I was a bit excited. And my son, AlienGoTravel too. He was asking me if we’ll be staying for the night in the jungle this time. It must have been the adrenaline rush that struck us fearless or something.

 photo IMG_9579_zpsc74ja37o.jpg

Trying figure out how to get out of trouble and back on track.

 photo DSCN7850_zpsnvsxwwvv.jpg

Friend from Malaysia Backpacker, giving a victory pose after our vehicle managed to be released. Obviously he was relieved. As much as we all would love to stay for a night in the jungle, the thought of starving and not having provisions and going hungry in the middle of the jungle does not exactly appeal much to us.

 photo 20151026_130452_zpsabm1bzk5.jpg

The boys, giving a macho killer pose with our ride after our jungle trekking session.

It was indeed an experience of a lifetime, and if you’re to ask me if I’d do it again, I would tell you that I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Kembara #dekatje: Teabreak session at Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre

The boys were famished after the training session and so, our ever gracious host served us with snacks under the passionfruit tree despite the fact that it is not even lunch time yet.

A small picnic table was set up under a passionfruit tree with local delights spread for our gastronomic pleasure.

 photo 20151026_105346_zpsimwy5sjw.jpg

Simple traditional savouries and sweet dessert were served to replenish the calories burnt during the training.

 photo 20151026_105706_zpsqdwy1naw.jpg

Lempeng and a side of savoury pumpkin gravy. Not something I’m familar with but it was out of this world.

 photo 20151026_105645_zpsvi5rbgco.jpg

Black coffee and sago dessert. Not a fan of either coffee or sweet things, but a mouthful of the sago dessert drizzled with palm sugar molass and coconut milk will warrant you for seconds.

Let’s hear what the boys have to say about our little teatime session in this Kembara #dekatje video.

Although I could hear some of us ladies jokingly grumble about ruined diet throughout our tea break, we were all happy with the arrangement made for us. The host really did goes all out to make our stay memorable, I must say.

Kembara #dekatje: Teambuilding Activities at Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre

After breakfast, it’s time for some workout. We proceed to the training ground after our heavy breakfast of Nasi Lemak for some team building activities. The team building activities was hosted by the resort. There are plenty of challenging things you will experience if you sign up for their team building package, but here’s sharing what the boys in our entourage did when we were there;

 photo 20151026_101127_zpsflcuz5nh.jpg

Our host, giving a thorough briefing and instruction on what should be done in order to accomplish the tasks given.

 photo 20151026_102309_zpsatvw3nca.jpg

The first task was putting together a series of plastic pole and make it stand erect on the ground by using ropes.

 photo 20151026_101545_zps6votmjoz.jpg

Working together is the key to accomplishing the task given

 photo 20151026_102151_zpspocoq3bj.jpg

Getting it up is not easy, I kid you not. The boys takes more than 15 minutes to get it done.

Let’s hear what my Kembara #dekatje co-host, Kos Serani have to say about it. Video was recorded in Bahasa Malaysia.

 photo 20151026_103731_zpspjxqoue6.jpg

Second activity was walking with giant shoes.

 photo 20151026_103718_zpsdcqutngm.jpg

This takes more than just working together. It takes great hand and legs coordination along with great communication skill to walk together by using this giant shoes.

Although the boys did not manage to complete the tasks given within stipulated time, they had fun nevertheless, and learned quite some things about being teamplayers.

Kembara #dekatje: Kampung Style Breakfast at Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre

Morning at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre seems to be a big thing for everyone. You can see guests jogging around or frolicking in the river for an early morning swim as early as 7am over here.

It must be the green environment that makes people want to kick start their morning in such an active way. One thing for sure, it is very refreshing to be able to workout so close to nature and breathe in fresh air instead of working out in a gym that reek with sweaty smell.

 photo 20151026_083202_zpshbgcwwdv.jpg

Breakfast is generally included with the room packages in Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre. This is what we had for breakfast during our stay. Typical traditional Malaysian breakfast of Nasi Lemak with condiments, traditional pink pancakes and black coffee to perk you up.

Guests who sign up for training packages or rooms may make special request or plan their meals in advance here in Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre. So if you have any special dietery requirement, just let them know and they will accomodate you.

Kembara #dekatje: BBQ Dinner and Karaoke Session at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre

Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre is eerily quiet at night. The only sound that I could hear from my riverside chalet when the night falls is just the sound of the river stream. It can be quite scary for some, especially those who came from the city and used to the hustle and bustle of it.

 photo 20151025_210056_LLS_zpssicfwdnb_edit_1447569497339_zpsjpbcjqvl.jpg

The view at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre at night. Gravely silent, but provides so much solitude and serenity. Just the thing that I want in a getaway.

 photo 20151025_210044_LLS_zpsvsksnhnn.jpg

But during our stay, the silence of the night was broken with a small gathering to celebrate our visit. Our host literally cooks up a BBQ dinner in our honour.

Freshly caught fish on the grill. Looks good, don’t they?

 photo 20151025_210147_zpsotwhdf87.jpg

Dinner was served. There’s corn on cobs, roasted chicken, grilled fish, fried rice and coleslaw.

 photo 20151025_211054_zpscfrr8p72.jpg

My humble BBQ dinner. Sorry for the awful plating. I was thinking with my stomach.

 photo 20151025_210937_zpszatdjq2t.jpg

I don’t usually like fishes. Not a fan of small bones and their fishy smell but it was so fresh and naturally sweet that I had a few helpings of it. I simply couldn’t help myself.

 photo 20151025_215925_zpszikj9o9p.jpg

After dinner, it’s happy hour with Tourism Malaysia Selangor. There are games, lucky draw and of course, karaoke session. Yes. Despite it being in the jungle, Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre does have karaoke facilities set up at the hut by the river. Rate is charged per hour and for those hosting training over here may request for this service too.

Karaoke session, featuring Razly of Flywinds Holidays and Nor Affendi of Tourism Malaysia Selangor. Croaking songs that could possibly awaken the dead. I think none of us have any talent to be a vocalist. We sang pretty much offkey and the pitching was horrible. But, that does not matter. We were not there for singing competition, and we did have a lot of fun bonding time together.

Below is the pricing for karaoke session in Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre, should you are interested to host any training, function or events here:

Karaoke + Technician – RM550/3 hour

Karaoke + Technician (Coffee House / Canopy) – RM400/3 hour

BBQ hut + 2 packs of charcoal- RM50

Kembara #dekatje: Teatime at Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre

Feeling famished after our tubing actuvities, we headed for some tummy warming tea and snacks. Again, it was served the traditional way. Everything was spread on the floor, where everyone sit together and enjoy the meal with our hands.

Kembara #dekatje: River Tubing at Kalumpang Resorts and Training Centre

I have a confession to make. I’m an adrenaline junkie. I love doing exhilarating things that makes my heart beat wildly and I would always jump at the opportunity of doing extreme sports. I discovered with pleasure that Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre is a place that offers such things.

One of the exhilarating, adrenaline pumping thing that we did during our stay at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre was river tubing. Tubing is a recreational activity where an individual rides on top of an inner tube, either on water, snow, or through the air. One could easily mistake that it’s a relaxing thing, but it’s definitely not. It was far from a cruise along the river. It was actually a bumpy ride. I don’t really have much pictures of our tubing activity as it was really a rough ride and I could barely hold the camera throughout the bumps but managed to capture some of the moments with my waterproof, shockproof Nikon Coolpix S33. Here’s sharing the moments with you. Yes. My son tagged along too, and I’m so proud of him.

 photo DSCN7770_zpspe67amsu.jpg

First, we were given a tube, a helmet and a lifejackets to wear. And then, our instructor guided us upstream where the river flows from top to bottom.

 photo DSCN7775_zpsjoh8x8sr.jpg

Helmets and lifejackets is absolutely necessary to avoid any unwanted injuries and incidents as the river flows really fast and it was really deep too. There are chances of you being thrown off from the tube, even when you hold onto it tightly.

 photo DSCN7776_zps0bhjf12o.jpg

See what I mean? Take a close look on this picture. Focus on the guy who is wearing yellow shirt. He is our tourism officer from Tourism Malaysia Selangor, Fendi.

 photo DSCN7777_zpsg04brded.jpg

This is not the first time he went tubing and yet he still get thrown off from his tube.

 photo DSCN7778_zps3amhjxq1.jpg

It may look easy, but it’s pretty tough.

 photo DSCN7784_zpskdpspkzl.jpg

But all is good. There are rope lines for you to cling to if the ride is too fast for you.

 photo DSCN7786_zpsy1ge0fq9.jpg

Many opt to cling to the rope.

 photo DSCN7797_zpsh24dr1c3.jpg

Blogger friend Hanny Abdullah, enjoying her ride.

 photo DSCN7800_zpso2igpr3r.jpg

If you are wondering whether it is safe or not, don’t worry. There are marshalls stationed at each points, and they keep a really good eye on you. You’re definitely in good hands.

 photo DSCN7802_zps0arv8wfu.jpg

If my son who is just 10 years old can do it, you got no excuse not to do it. It’s all about attitude and taking challenges with a pinch of salt.

 photo DSCN7806_zpssakaugoj.jpg

Blogger friend Hanny Abdullah giving us her victory pose. See the chalet behind? That’s where my family stays for the weekend. Nice, isn’t it? Our chalet was just by the riverside.

Let’s hear what my co-host of Kembara #dekatje travelogue Kos Serani have to say. Video edit by my husband Garfield and son AlienGoTravel.

The aftermath.

 photo DSCN7829_zpsthhldp0q.jpg

We managed to go for two rounds of river tubing but it was getting dark, so instead of going for the third, we called it a day and just frolick in the river instead.

And what’s Tourism Malaysia Selangor trip without having picnic in the river?

 photo 20151025_154706_zps2jg4ihpa.jpg

We did it in Eco Murai Rimba at Batang Kali, and we did it again at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre. It’s our trademark. A must do thing when we ventured to any rivers in Malaysia.

 photo DSCN7825_zpslqopoveg.jpg

One for the album. A killer modeling pose for #selfiewefieTMSel before we dragged our shrivelled self to the hut where our host has graciously prepared teatime snacks for us.

Kembara #dekatje: Kampung Style Lunch at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre

It was a busy and exhausting morning after our coverage for Kalumpang Rainforest Jungle Run. Everyone was famished and upon arrival and checking in to Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre, our host graciously ushered for lunch.

 photo 20151025_125511_zpsjww2yfqm_edit_1447236432895_zpsc1br47ja.jpg

Lunch was traditional Malay style where all the dishes were spread out on the floor and we eat our meal communal style with our hands.

 photo 20151025_124446_zpscjblms7v.jpg

The lunch spread was truly amazing and it’s nothing like what you can get in resraurants.

 photo 20151025_124508_zps2mul8sgf.jpg

Assorted freshly plucked ulam-ulaman, salted eggs, salted fish, fried tofu and fried tempeh served in a huge tray. These side dishes are paired with steamed white rice and is absolutely delicious.

 photo 20151025_124551_zps1grtqhco.jpg

A must in every traditional Malay dish, sambal belacan.

 photo 20151025_124527_zpsci1aqfk0.jpg

Fried fish, freshly caught from the river.

 photo 20151025_124546_zpsedlcvlmc.jpg

Grilled fish wrapped with banana leaf and stuffed with sambal belacan. I usually detest fish, but this dish is to die for and please don’t ask how many helping I had. The amount was not very ladylike.

Kembara #dekatje: Riverside Chalet at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre

As I mentioned in my previous post where I summarized my family’s retreat at Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre with our friends from Tourism Malaysia Selangor, the place is an agro tourism resort that was built in the orchards on land covering 17 acres and is a haven for those who would love to get close to nature.

 photo IMG_9414_zpsipawfeht.jpg

Entrance to Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre

Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre Location Plan

 photo IMG_9417_zpsgbajhcka.jpg

Walking towards the entrance, guests will be greeted by the resident parrot, who amazingly doubled as a ‘receptionist’ for the souvenir shop.

 photo IMG_9421_zpspblzubho.jpg

And a cheeky monkey who’d do anything for you to get you to release him from the cage during his non play time.

 photo IMG_9415_zpsmgfarobc.jpg

There is a river located deep inside the resort, and one does not necessarily have to be a guest of the resort to enjoy the river activities or a relaxing riverside picnic. The place is accessible to public and daily pass can be obtained at the reception house outside for RM10 per adult and RM5 per child.

 photo 20151026_120110_zpsixooq0l0.jpg

Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre has more than 70 units of chalets built with both natural and modern elements. Apart from that, there are hostels for visitors who came in groups. For those who are more adventurous. campsites with tents are available for rent. Sleeping bags is however not included.

Out chalet was located deep inside of the Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre.

 photo 20151026_115532_zpss0s011xj.jpg

It was about 8 minutes walk away from the entrance of the resort.

 photo 20151025_145447_zpshnlz78ao.jpg

By luck or chance, the room allocated to my family happens to be just by the riverside, so we have quite a great view from our room.

Our chalet, with balcony overlooking the river.

 photo IMG_9395_zpsxeeob2a_edit_1447228642983_zpskmseh7vd.jpg

The chalet is meant for couple and is equipped with a sofa and TV at the livingroom and a Queen size bed at the bedroom.

 photo 20151025_154710_zpsfvy9qp1b.jpg

Queen size bed. The bedroom is equipped with air conditioner, which we did not use at all throughout the duration of our stay as the air was already cold and refreshing and is almost freezing at night.

 photo IMG_9402_zpsziv4lfm_edit_1447228992184_zpsqhzfscnl.jpg

There is bathroom ensuite for your convenience, but as the place’s concept is kinda back to nature, there is no hot water shower installed. Water sources is from the mountain, so it is really refreshing.

While it’s quite embarrassing to admit, but I have to say that although my husband and I have a habit of sharing the shower together whenever we are on trips and we are usually much more interested in the bathroom much more than our bedroom, my husband and I only used the shower twice, as we spent most of our time bathing in the nature; in the river itself with our friends from Tourism Malaysia Selangor. I’m not sure if anyone would approve of that, behaving like some juvenile teenager on the loose and launching water splashing wars, but hey, the water activities here in Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre is a big thing, and the water temperature in the river isn’t terribly cold, and therefore we found the great river is much more fun than our bathroom.
