Chin Swee Caves Temple at Night

In my previous posting on Chin Swee temple, I’ve shared the history of it and how it looks like during the day. If you thought it is beautiful during the day, then you will be amazed on how eerily picturesque it looks like at night.

I have always been curious on how a temple looks like at night, and so, I begged my husband to accompany me to walk around in Chin Swee Temple after the nightfalls. He didn’t exactly agree in the beginning but during our drive down from the peak of Genting Highlands, we stopped by Chin Swee Temple as it was raining cats and dogs and driving was terribly dangerous as the visibility was very low.

So, here’s sharing with you how the the temple looks like at night, just after the rain.

The pagoda, all lighted up but it is not open to public at night.

Stairs and gateway to the Sky Terrace where there is pathway to the Heaven and Hell Realm. My family and I decided to take a stroll up for a little while and was amazed on how one place could look so different in the dark.

Here’s a video of Chin Swee Caves Temple at Night. Sorry for the noise and the quality. It was freezing cold and I wasn’t in the mood to comment much about it.

The view in the temple is breathtaking regardless day or night. Do give it a visit.

Keeping Sensitive Skin Moisturized with Cetaphil

Someone told me quite some time ago that traveling is like a book. Those who doesn’t travel, read just one page. I don’t want to be like a frog in the well, and so I started traveling with my family once my son reached a manageable age.

I like to travel to places that people don’t usually go to. It gives me such a great insight and perspective on things and life in general.

But traveling to less mainstream destinations like a trip to the jungle or some secluded river for a swimming session have a drawback in terms of comfort. Indulging in vanity is usually a luxury and as a consequences to traveling to strange places, I’ve developed skin sensivity and lack tolerance towards skincare products that I usually used. My skin is now easily dry and flaky, and I need skincare items that is really gentle on my skin, especially my face area if I were to cleanse it.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been suffering from skin discomfort until my friend took pity on me and introduced me to some a range of skincare product on the net known as Cetaphil. I’ll be honest with you, I’m not really familiar with this brand, but I decided to give it a shot as I’m already terribly desperate and I’ve read so much good reviews about it. I thought, well, I got nothing to lose. After all, the skin is already in a bad condition. What’s the worst could happened anyway?

 photo 20151128_000754_zpshxoiekf7.jpg

Ceraphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. This skincare product claimed to be gentle on your skin and is suitable for all skin type. My screwed logic is; it’s probably suitable for my dry, flaky and damaged skin.

 photo 20151128_000808_zpsvtunyshl.jpg

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is suitable for everyday and frequent use and is recommended by paediatrician and dematologists for those with sensitive skin.

 photo 20151128_000838_zpsozbxmbkx.jpg

I usually will use the cleanser when I woke up in the morning, before I sleep at night or when I’m all grimy after some nasty jungle trekking or after a swim in some unknown river.

 photo BeautyPlus_20151128001158_fast_zps6b04lglq.jpg

What’s good about this product is that you don’t need to squirt a huge amount to cleanse whichever part of your body with. Just a little will do.

Chin Swee Caves Temple

I used to watch ancient Chinese fantasy dramas where they featured beautiful god, goddesses and fairies and I will always be fascinated by the divine beauties and the fantasy of it. I still do watch that sort of costume drama every now and then upon recommendations by drama addicts like myself to pass time.

The stories like Journey to the West, Goddess of Mercy, Neza, Goddess Nuwa, the Four Heavenly Kings and many more made quite an impression on me and although it has been told many times in different ways and different adaptations, I still couldn’t get bored watching them. I suppose, I’m the romantic sort of person and I like such escapism.

Watching those ancient Chinese dramas sometimes makes me feel like I’m part of the tale. Sometimes I would imagine that I am a fairy princess or a Queen in Wonderland.

There are times where I wish that I belonged in the realms of Gods, and while I’m a mere mortal and does not belong in such world, I was fortunate enough to be given a chance to somewhat explore the realm of mortal, heaven and hell for a day. Well, almost. That’s a little exaggerating but that is how it felt like when my family and I visited Chin Swee Caves Temple two weeks back during one of our media trip with Resort World Genting.

 photo 20151114_140605_zpshsjlboyc.jpg

Located at 4,600 feet above sea level, the temple is about 5–10 minutes’ drive from the peak of the mountain. There is plenty to see in the vicinity of the temple, even if you are not a worshipper. The temple itself is divided into a few sections and is one of the major tourist attractions in Genting Highlands. You don’t need to be a believer to visit the temple. As Chin Swee Caves Temple is a tourist attraction, people from all walk of life is welcome to visit. It is a place of worship, and therefore, no entrance fees is imposed. Offerings, monetory donations for temple maintenence on the other hand is welcomed.

 photo 20151114_143259_zpspjluci6s.jpg

As a non believer, I could say that the temple is divided into three ‘realms’, which is The Mortal Realm, Hell Realm and The Heavenly Realm. Or perhaps, one could commonly refer to it as Heaven, Hell and Earth.

 photo 20151114_141046_zpsalerht6u.jpg

Part of the Mortal Realm is the place of worship. A prayer hall where prayers are offered and divinations are asked from the temple deities.

 photo 20151114_142117_zpsnbx72131_edit_1448385594728_zpsdezle5ma.jpg

Entrance to the Chin Swee Caves Temple is guarded by four divine guards, two on each entrance of the temple. I’m not quite familiar with the guard statues that’s guarding the temple entrance but I was told that the four guards are actually the devils who tried to burn and kill Chin Swee Deity. However they failed and ended up becoming the guardians of the deity.

Chin Swee Caves Temple is the home to the divine Chin Swee Deity. Here’s a video introduction on the history of Chin Swee Caves Temple and how and why it was built by Miss Irene Chua, the PR of Resort World Genting.

 photo 20151114_141538_zpsdvifetgy.jpg

Chin Swee Deity’s statue sat grandly at the altar. Here is where devotees burn incense as prayer offering and asks for divination or fortune tellings.

Asking for divination from the deity via the fortune telling sticks. The person would pray and ask question silently before taking the container and shaking it til one of the sticks fall out. There are numbers or wordings on it that represent the answer to their prayers or questions and they can get it intrepreted by priest or priestess in the temple.

 photo 20151114_141941_LLS_zpsjsczinkz.jpg

Chin Swee Caves temple may look very homey and intricately build. But the truth is that it was painstakingly built inaide a large cave, hence the name. Here’s one obvious part of the temple that still looks like a cave, the holy water spring.

 photo 20151114_141827_LLS_zpswquv5zmt.jpg

Darkly mysterious, the water spring is believed to have healing properties, and visitors would usually have a sip of it for cleansing or blessing purposes.

Part of the mortal realm in Chin Swee Caves temple is a beautiful manmade garden.

The garden is inhabited by turtles.

Turtles is usually associated with prosperity and longevity and here’s their little sanctuary in Chin Swee Caves Temple.

Beautiful scenery. This spot is a favourite among vistors for photohraphy purposes.

Moving further from the Mortal Realm, there’s Hell and Heavenly Realm.

 photo 20151114_143643_zpsjiw7l2oy.jpg

To reach the Heaven, one would have to make a trip through the path in Journey to enlightment and pass through the tortures of Hell.

 photo 20151114_144339_zps2wfme66c.jpg

A giant Buddha statue can be seen sitting serenely at the hilltop, guarding the path to Heaven and Hell.

 photo 20151114_143756_zpsfjzxe99a.jpg

There is a few levels of Hell and it is pretty gory and horrifyingly graphic. Since I’m not a huge fan of anything terrifying or horrid, I’ll just share a few things. Like most Hell depicted in major religions of the world like Christian and Islam, Hell is a place where mortals goes after their death to receive their retributions for their evil deeds and wrongdoings when they were alive.

 photo 20151114_144213_zps6bn9ft6y.jpg

Punishments are usually severe and merciless and executed without any mercy.

 photo 20151114_144309_zps5hwpfril.jpg

After walking through hell over here, one would literally repent and do good. The punishment is beyond human understandings and endurance.

 photo 20151114_144701_zpshrsuzi7x.jpg

The last phase of Hell. The memory management. Part of Buddhists belief is that one soul can be reborn many times. But to enter a new life and be reborn and live in a new incarnation, one will have to forget everything about their past life. For that to be possible, those who are going to be reborn will be given the soup of forgetfulness ‘Meng Po Ting’ before being thrown back to Earth in their new incarnation. All the memories of their past life will be erased.

 photo 20151114_144844_zpsklre7xzd.jpg

To be reincarnated as human in the next life or not depends on one’s good deeds.

 photo 20151114_144039_zpsokathhkp.jpg

Hell is not forever. At least at Chin Swee Caves Temple it is not. Once you’re done taking a stroll through Hell, you will stumble upon the statue of a Buddha and it will point you to the pathway of heaven where heavenly beings and creatures awaits your arrival.

 photo 20151114_144923_zps36mbxzks.jpg

Guan Yin, Goddess of Mercy is one of the deity that you will stumble upon before proceeding to Heaven.

Heavenly beings spotted.

Here’s a scene where seven Fairies escorting the Jade Empress, the wife of the Jade King, the ruler of Heaven.

 photo 20151114_150012_zps3svizs4z.jpg

The three Gods. Also known as the Three Stars or in Chinese, Sanxing. They are Fu, Lu, and Shou, the personification of Prosperity (Fu), Status (Lu), and Longevity (Shou) in the Chinese traditional religion. The term is commonly used in Chinese culture to denote the three attributes of a good life.

 photo 20151114_150303_zpscglpxauw.jpg

One of my favourite story from the Chinese folklore,Journey to The West, depicting the adventure of the Monk Xuan Zhang and his diciples to the West on order to obtain the sacred Sutras. In this story, he is guarded by three protectors who agree to help him as an atonement for their sins. These disciples are Sun Wukong the Monkey King, Zhu Wuneng and Sha Wujing, together with a dragon prince who acts as Xuanzang’s steed, a white horse.

A Pagoda can be seen from ‘Heaven’. It is open to visitors from 10am to 4pm daily.

 photo 20151114_144005_zpshae37peo.jpg

Breathtaking view from the top of the temple ground.

To see the depiction of heaven and hell via realistic scene brought to life through statues is indeed interesting and educational to me and my family. Should you have a chance to drive up to Genting Highlands, do drop by this place and give it a visit with an open mind. For what it’s worth, Chin Swee Temple is much more than just a place of worship. It is a gateway to another world.

Affordable Holiday Getaway: Genting Highlands

With a blink of the eye, 2015 is already coming to it’s end. November and December in Malaysia is usually associated with the dreadful monsoon and rainy days. Not quite a favourite among parents and young children as coincidentally, November and December also happens to be school holidays.

School holiday is a season where most parents would love to take some time off and spend some quality time with their children. While I wouldn’t exactly recommend you to go for holidays in the East Coast where the monsoon hits hard, I’d say a short getaway is still possible for those who want to go for a retreat or a day trip.

Understandably, budget can be quite an issue these days due to the depreciation of Ringgit Malaysia value and traveling to international destinations can be quite costly, so here’s recommending a domestic holiday destination that you might want to consider in November/December 2015; Genting Highlands.

Genting Highlands, although much more well known to the world as a gambler’s heaven is more than just a gambling den. It has much more to offer than just the casinos.

Here’s sharing with you an affordable school holiday travel ideas without having to splurge your Ringgits.

While on your way up, stop by and visit Chin Swee Caves Temple.

Kembara #dekatje: Asam Pedas Kuala Kubu Bharu

Tourists often mistaken Kuala Kubu Bharu as a quiet, sleepy town in Selangor, but the town located 70 km from the capital of Kuala Lumpur reveals a history that is both enriching and charming. The historic city were planted with high-value specialty trees like mahagony and tembusu and the tropical rain forest there have been home to plants and animals. Famous among birdwatchers, Kuala Kubu Bharu is also a heaven for foodies, provided you know where to find it.

There’s plenty of nice and affordable eats in Kuala Kubu Bharu, but here’s recommending you one if you are Asam Pedas fan.

Here’s one where you can enjoy authentic King Prawn Asam Pedas at a very reasonable price: Asam Pedas Kuala Kubu Bharu. My family and I discovered this gem after our trip to Kalumpang with Tourism Malaysia Selangor.

Despite of our hearty lunch, we still feel like having something to eat after that before heading home, and we ended up here, having Asam Pedas instead of getting typically light things to eat as our snacks.

 photo 20151026_160555_zpsc5e4wm1o.jpg

The small restaurant is located at the food court of Dataran Kuala Kubu Bharu. Their specialty? Assorted Asam Pedas with King Prawn variety being their chef’s recommended dish.

The restaurant could accommodate decent amount of guests.

Asam Pedas Udang Galah (King Prawns)

The portion is huge and the prawn was really big, but go easy on the gravy.

It’s not for the faint hearted.

 photo IMG_468522609581611_zpsqliupqzc.jpeg

Highly flavoured, the gravy should be taken with a plate of piping hot rice.

 photo 20151026_160812_zpspnmsdagd.jpg

We also ordered their Asam Pedas Ikan, which was delicious as well.

A side of stir fried shredded cabbage with crispily fried anchovies as a an accompanying dish to balance out all the oceanic goodness.

Kembara #dekatje: 4×4 Jungle Experience

2015 is definitely an adventurous year for me. Not only I went birdwatching and explore mangrove forest in the rain, but rock climbing and river tubing as well. Most of these priceless experience is courtesy of our good friends in Tourism Malaysia Selangor. They have been going all out to promote undiscovered gems in Selangor, and it’s been an honour and privilege to join them in their quest to bring in more visitors and tourists to explore and experience Selangor.

Another precious thing that my family and I get to experience during our previous trip with Tourism Malaysia Selangor is the extreme jungle experience with a 4WD or 4×4.

If you have been following my blog post or have been watching videos on the Kembara #dekatje series on my family’s YouTube channel, you would realize that Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre provide all kinds of packages to cater your team building and family day needs, and that includes extreme sports like abseiling, tubing, river crossing and off-roading. While we did not manage to experience abseiling and river crossing during our trip to Kalumpang, we did get to enjoy river tubing and jungle experience in a 4×4 vehicle.

Here’s sharing with you our experience jn the jungle with a 4×4 drive. 4×4

translates to a vehicle with 4 wheels powered by 4 wheels that can go all direction in rough terrains.

 photo DSCN7842_zpsis0a00gf_edit_1447815381563_zpslavethb9.jpg

Our ranger and jungle guide, with our rugged 4×4 ride.

 photo IMG_9532_zpsucyfmwgr.jpg

Here’s us, prepping our photography equipments and getting into our ride. One 4×4 vehicle can accommodate up to a maximum of 8 passengers.

 photo IMG_9547_zpsotbnon5e.jpg

Our rough adventure begins. We departed just after our snacking session and seriously had no idea that the ride would most probably make us lose the snacks in the tummy if we had motion sickness. Yes. It was really a rough ride. I’d likened it to riding a terribly bumpy roller coaster without the seatbelts or going through an earthquake in a small room without any actual thing to hang on to.

Venturing deeper into the jungle

 photo IMG_9571_zpsahk3g1ae.jpg

After about 30 minutes of a rough ride or so, our vehicle got stuck in a huge hole and we got stuck in the middle of the jungle. Did I feel scared? Strangely, no. In fact, I was a bit excited. And my son, AlienGoTravel too. He was asking me if we’ll be staying for the night in the jungle this time. It must have been the adrenaline rush that struck us fearless or something.

 photo IMG_9579_zpsc74ja37o.jpg

Trying figure out how to get out of trouble and back on track.

 photo DSCN7850_zpsnvsxwwvv.jpg

Friend from Malaysia Backpacker, giving a victory pose after our vehicle managed to be released. Obviously he was relieved. As much as we all would love to stay for a night in the jungle, the thought of starving and not having provisions and going hungry in the middle of the jungle does not exactly appeal much to us.

 photo 20151026_130452_zpsabm1bzk5.jpg

The boys, giving a macho killer pose with our ride after our jungle trekking session.

It was indeed an experience of a lifetime, and if you’re to ask me if I’d do it again, I would tell you that I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
