Baby Nadja Update… One Week Old Today!
Healthy and alert, the baby nadia نعجة (sheep) was born a week ago and is doing great despite the heat.
Here she is just moments after she was born!
She has new friends to eventually play with when she gets her strength.
Just another member of the flock now!

Sharing the new Arabic edition of “Egypt’s Wildlife, Past and Present” with Ahmed, my Luxor Brother!
Thank you Ahmed! You’ve always been so kind, and supportive of my work! Much of the artwork for the foldouts I researched and created while staying in his rental flats in Luxor. If you need a place to work, relax, and make artwork, I highly recommend the apartments of my French-speaking landlord Ahmed!

New Baby Nadia نعجة (Sheep)
Was in time to witness the arrival of a new baby nadia نعجة (sheep) today. Her mother seemed nervous, having never had a baby before, but she was aided through the birth and her baby is healthy and strong, standing within just a few minutes and immediately finding her way to her mother’s milk.

A Sprinkly Spring Morning in Luxor, Egypt
After a week long heat wave and khamasin خمسين, Luxor received some spring sprinkles of rain. The wind no longer was hot and sandy, but cool and refreshing.
Just a few sprinkles, but just enough to really enjoy, even the cat Habibi was refreshed.

New Friends in Luxor
This is Habibi حبيبتى (“my love” in Arabic). He is the most soft spoken, kind little feline I’ve known in a long time, and often shows up unexpectedly to keep me company, especially in the kitchen.
This is Ta‘ala تعال (Arabic for “come”). We were friends a year ago, and picked up where we left off, but he’s got more attitude now that he’s the alpha male to his new friend. He sits beneath a tree I helped plant, a Cassia surattensis.
This is Khayef خاف (Arabic for “afraid”). He’s still young and may get a new name when he learns to smile.
With kind eyes but rather aloof, and aggressive with strangers, is Wolf:
Other friends include نعجة or sheep:
And you can’t have friends in Luxor without a lot of gossip, so here’s a photo of my gossiping friends حمامة:

Habibi the Cat and the Galabeya
I found Habibi sleeping serenely on a white galabeya which of course reminded me of the story of Muhammad and his cat, which I describe in the AUC Press Nature Foldout Cats of Egypt. There is a legend about the Prophet Muhammad—who held a high regard for all animals—and his beloved cat named Muezza. Rather than disturb her as she napped on the sleeve of his prayer robe, he gently cut the sleeve away.
My illustration of this was something I longed to be very beautiful, but I could not get good enough reference imagery for a cat curled up the way I imagined it. If only I’d Habibi as my model at the time.
