Morrow Bay — Sea Otter Nursery & Seashore Discoveries

screen-shot-2016-09-10-at-12-23-15-pm

Morrow Bay, known as California’s Rock of Gibraltar, seems to always be fogged in no matter what the season. The Morrow Rock is a 576 foot high volcanic plug, and it’s harbor has apparently become a sea otter nursery…

Sea otters, Enhydra lutris are native to the coasts of the North Pacific Ocean. Between 1741 and 1911, they were hunted extensively for their fur and the world population fell to 1,000–2,000 individuals. While a ban on hunting, conservation efforts, and reintroduction programs have contributed to their numbers rebounding, they remain on the endangered species list. So this small colony in Morrow Bay is wonderful to see!

James Henry Breasted

Smithsonian_Institution_Archives_-_SIA2007-0364

James Henry Breasted (August 27, 1865 – December 2, 1935)

One of the greatest Egyptologists and archaeologists America has yet produced, James Henry Breasted’s greatest achievement was the founding of the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago in 1919, through the generous support of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The Oriental Institute embodies Breasted’s vision of an inter-disciplinary research center that unites archaeology, textual studies, and art history as three complementary methodologies to provide a holistic understanding of ancient Near Eastern civilizations, and the ways that they laid the foundations for what we think of today as “Western civilization.” Breasted’s legacy continues to flourish today.

The Human Adventure—This 1935 film, produced by the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago under the supervision of Dr. James Henry Breasted, was written and told by his son, Charles Breasted. Though we no longer think about archaeology in the same way, this film gives us insight into the early days of the field.

American Egyptologist: The Life of James Henry Breasted and the Creation of His Oriental Institute by Jeffrey Abt

In American Egyptologist, Jeffrey Abt weaves together the disparate strands of Breasted’s life, from his small-town origins following the Civil War to his evolution into the father of American Egyptology and the founder of the Oriental Institute in the early years of the University of Chicago. Abt explores the scholarly, philanthropic, diplomatic, and religious contexts of his ideas and projects, providing insight into the origins of America’s most prominent center for Near Eastern archaeology. An illuminating portrait of the nearly forgotten man who demystified ancient Egypt for the general public, American Egyptologist restores James Henry Breasted to the world and puts forward a brilliant case for his place as one of the most important scholars of modern times.
