New FREE m/m release: The Ideal Cut

Hooray, it’s finally here! My free m/m novella The Ideal Cut is available today from the “Love Has No Boundaries” Event at the M/M Romance Group on Goodreads.

cover by S. Z. Warren

The Ideal Cut by Elinor Gray (12,000 words)

Clayton Gaumont, aliasThe Ghost, is one of the most skilled, least known diamond thieves in the world, and tonight is just another night on the job. The party is in full swing, the guests are all occupied, and a twenty million dollar prize sits unguarded just over their heads. But bumping into s...

Monday Music: Cups

My sister and I watchedPitch Perfect the other day, and adored it. It’s a feminist movie in a lot of ways, which I enjoyed, but it’s also an a capella movie, which can’t be beat. :D Anna Kendrick’s song “Cups (When I’m Gone)” is big on the radio right now, so that was what reminded me that I’d wanted to watch this movie.

It stokes the wanderlust in me, the adventurer who wants to get out and see new things and not go on repeating day after day the same cycles of work and home and gym time and...

Photo Friday: Setting

(Shh, I know it’s Saturday.)

So Pinterest, am I right? I went shopping at the Double Feature Thrift Store in Silver Spring yesterday with my sister, and she had Pinterest open the whole time to keep me on track with finding cute outfits. Magical. But I also love using Pinterest to organize inspirational images for writing. Location, for me, can make or break a story in my mind. I do tons of research on setting, because if I can’t visualize it myself, how can I take anyone else there as well?

Th...

WIP Wednesday: Scottish Christmas

It’s a WIP until it’s got a title, right? I’m tearing my hair out trying to think of something. Love at Hogmanay is accurate, but sounds a little ridiculous. I was told under no uncertain terms was I invited to pull from a song. Everything else I come up with sounds like a great title for a totally different story:First Footer,or The Ruins of Dunnottar, orStranger’s Luck. Crap.

What kinds of things do you look for in titling a story, or picking a story to read?

For giggles, have an excerpt:

“Did...

Monday Music: Auld Lang Syne

I realize that the end of July is a totally inappropriate time to be posting Christmas music, but I’m working today on the synopsis of my (yet untitled, jeez, get on it) Christmas in Scotland novella, and this gorgeous rendition gets me in the mood.

Here’s the “Auld Land Syne” scene from the story, below the cut:

The bonfire started after dark in an empty field off Woodside Road, near where Colleen lived. The Campbells and Charlie put on their warmest coats and set off on foot, anyone under the...

That new draft smell (plus an excerpt)

Mmm, it’s sogood! I finished the first draft of a yet-untitled way-too-long short for Dreamspinner’s “Heartwarming” holiday collection call, and I adore it. Charlie Porter and Hugh Campbell are my new boyfriends. Ugh, they’re stupidly cute. I love love love the friends-to-lovers trope, and the bed-sharing cliche, and the everyone-knows-but-you plot form. :D

I’ve sent the draft to my favorite beta readers, editors, and Scots, to help me clean it up for submission. I know I’m going to have to cu...

oh baltimore, never change

It’s hot as shit today. I think this is the case across the country, but I can’t rouse myself from my air conditioned stupor to find out. We were watching Whose Line this morning (an aside: IT’S BACK!) and the power blinked out for a second. Then we heard aBANG from across the street, and then another, and as we looked out the window in confusion, a third. A manhole cover in the street on our (busy) intersection had blown right out of the ground, and the lights in the intersection were out. I...

“Ideal Cut” covers

I’ve been agonizing over not knowing whenThe Ideal Cut would be released in the Goodreads M/M Romance Group summer Love Has No Boundariesevent, and last week the edits turned up! Hooray! So it’s probably still a few weeks out, but it gave me the kick in the pants to talk to my cover artist, S. Z. Warren.

She threw this bad boy together for me in a matter of days, because she is amazing:

I am over the moon! It’s a free goddamn story, and it’s got the best cover I’ve ever had! I love it. I can’t...

“Heartwarming” Progress: Day 3

Words Today: 1,030

Words Total: 3,701

“He sounds cute,” Charlie’s mom said slyly.

“Mom,” Charlie chided, but he couldn’t tell her how stupid it was to think someone sounded cute, not with that someone ten feet away. “Knock it off.”

“I’m just saying, he sounds like a good friend.”

“That’s not what you said.”

“I love you, honey. We’re going to miss you so much, but we’ll see you when the snow lets up.”

“Love you too, mom. We can Skype when I get there, tomorrow morning or something.”

“Sounds good. I ca...

WIP: “Heartwarming”

Oh, man. So I’m working on a short story for a Christmas anthology at Dreamspinner, and in my breaks from actually writing I’ve been pinning. I didn’t think I could get so addicted to Pinterest, but. Whoops! This shit is dangerous.

Here’s the Pin Board.

Christmas in Scotland! Who can resist?!
