Sen. Fetterman will return to the Senate on April 17 after his hospital release

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., was released from the hospital on Friday and is back in Braddock, Pa., his office said.

The senator had been receiving treatment for major depression at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since he checked into the Washington, D.C., hospital last month, according to a news release from his office.

Fetterman’s depression is now in remission, his doctor said.

He will return to the Senate on April 17, his office said. In the meantime, Sen. Fetterman will spend time with his family and constituents in Pennsylvania.

“I am so happy to be home. I’m excited to be the father and husband I want to be, and the senator Pennsylvania deserves. Pennsylvanians have always had my back, and I will always have theirs,” Sen. Fetterman said in the statement released by his office.

“I am extremely grateful to the incredible team at Walter Reed. The care they provided changed my life. I will have more to say about this soon, but for now I want everyone to know that depression is treatable, and treatment works. This isn’t about politics — right now there are people who are suffering with depression in red counties and blue counties. If you need help, please get help.”

Just over six weeks ago, Fetterman was admitted on a voluntary basis to inpatient treatment for clinical depression, following a doctor’s evaluation and subsequent recommendation.

At the time, he’d showed severe symptoms of depression – following weeks of significant weight loss and loss of appetite — his doctor said in a discharge briefing summarized by the senator’s office. In treatment, his depression gradually improved, and was managed with the help of medication.

Fetterman, who helped clinch a Senate majority for Democrats when he defeated Dr. Mehmet Oz in the November race, has recently faced multiple health complications that have sidelined the 53-year-old freshman senator from his work.

Fetterman suffered a stroke last May, interrupting his midterm campaign days ahead of the primary election. He then had a pacemaker and defibrillator implanted to treat an irregular heart rhythm.

He continues to deal with communication challenges related to his auditory processing issues. For conversations, he’s relied on aides at the Capitol who assist him with devices that translate voice to text.

Fetterman was also fitted for hearing aids during his treatment and worked with speech-language specialists for what his care team identified as mild-to-moderate hearing loss. His speech abilities showed improvement as his depression improved, according to the doctor’s summary.

The senator said he’s committed to long-term treatment to manage both his depression and auditory processing condition, the doctor said.

It’s unusual for sitting politicians to speak publicly about getting mental health treatment. But when Fetterman’s office announced the senator’s hospitalization, both Democrat and Republican colleagues responded with words of support.

Lisa Ann Walter Reveals How Sheryl Lee Ralph Inspired Body Positivity

The educators at Abbott Elementary even manage to teach themselves lessons sometimes.

After saying that an ex-boyfriend attempted to shame her “for being fat” during her time on the NBC sitcom Emeril in 2001, Lisa Ann Walter revealed her struggle with body image actually extended much further.

“I wish it was just once,” Lisa exclusively told E! at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles March 30. “I was fat shamed my entire life because I was the fat kid. Back when I was growing up, there weren’t as many heavy kids.”

However, the actress revealed that her Abbott Elementary co-star Sheryl Lee Ralph has been responsible for helping her turn a corner.

“With Sheryl in my ear saying, ‘I won’t hear that anymore, I won’t hear you talk that trash about yourself anymore,'” Lisa said she realized that “finally, at this point in my life, I’m not trying to be anything other than what I am. And I love it.”

Ex-AG Barr slams ‘pathetically weak’ legal theory behind Trump indictment: ‘An abomination’

Former Attorney General Bill Barr reacted Friday to former President Trump’s indictment over his alleged 2016 secret money scandal, calling it an “abomination.”

Trump was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday. He is the first ex-president in US history to be indicted.

Barr appeared on Fox Business to discuss the indictment with host Larry Kudlow.

“Obviously we don’t have the indictment, so there’s a bit of speculation,” Barr began. “But according to the reports, if they’re accurate, it’s an abomination.”

“It’s a dream come true”

Boxing legend Mike Tyson has revealed it was a ‘dream come true’ after opening his first cafe in Amsterdam.

Since hanging up his gloves, the 56-year-old has created a cannabis empire, where he is the proud owner of a 40-acre weed ranch in California.

The former heavyweight champion revealed in 2020 how he smoked around £33,000 worth of weed a month after getting into the marijuana business in 2016.

Tyson announced in November how he teamed up with former rival Evander Holyfield to sell cannabis edibles, which pays homage to the infamous ear biting in their 1997 rematch.

Each ‘Holy Ear’ has a piece missing to represent the piece of Holyfield’s actual ear that Tyson bit off – which resulted in the latter being disqualified.

And ‘Iron Mike’ has now extended his empire to Europe where he launched a cafe in the capital of the Netherlands.

The doors are now open to Coffeeshop Tyson 2.0, which is located on Spuistraat 222 – within walking distance of the famous red light district.

And being the diligent owner that Tyson is, the American insisted he had “tried and tested” every product available in the store.

“I’ve tried and tested them all, and can’t wait to share some of my most beloved and undefeated products with Europe.”

Tyson then took to social media where he shared two snaps of the chic establishment on the cafe’s Instagram page.

He commented: “It’s official! Tyson Cafe is finally open in Amsterdam, and it’s everything you’ve been waiting for!

Customers of Tyson’s cafe will be able to huff to their heart’s content, as the recreational use of marijuana inside stores has been legal in Holland since 1976.

Although those wishing to visit Tyson’s business are not permitted to smoke on the streets of the red light district, outdoor use will be illegal from May.

Five arrested in migration center fire that killed 39 in Mexico

MEXICO CITY — Mexican officials said Thursday they arrested five people for their role in a fire at a Ciudad Juárez migrant detention center that killed at least 39 people.

Authorities did not name the suspects who were apprehended, but said arrest warrants had been obtained for three government migration officials, two private security guards and a migrant accused of starting the fire. The sixth person charged had not yet been taken into custody.

Officials said Wednesday they were investigating the fire as a homicide case, saying some of the officials, including federal and state agents, did not allow the migrants to escape. They did not disclose the charges against the defendants in the case.

The fire started on Monday evening, when a group of detained migrants set fire to mattresses because they feared deportation, Mexican officials said.

Some migrants told officials in interviews that they had not received water while in detention, according to Sara Irene Herrerías Guerra, a top federal human rights prosecutor.

Video released this week appears to show that when the fire started, uniformed people from the detention center walked away and left several men behind bars as smoke filled the area where they were being held.

“None of the officials, nor the private security guards, did anything to open the door for the migrants who were inside where the fire occurred,” Ms. Herrerías Guerra said.

In addition to the 39 deaths, 27 people remain hospitalized. Among the dead were 18 Guatemalans, six Hondurans, seven Salvadorans, seven Venezuelans and one Colombian.

“Our government’s priority is to respect the human rights of all people, regardless of their immigration status,” said Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, the government’s secretary for security, on Thursday.

The deaths come after weeks of escalating tensions in Ciudad Juárez over migrants hoping to enter El Paso, Texas, just across the US-Mexico border. The mayor of Ciudad Juárez had recently promised a tougher approach to migrants who he said “could affect the city’s economy and thousands of Juárez and El Paso residents”.

Migrants taken to the center before Monday’s fire were arrested after local residents complained of people begging for money in the streets, Ms Rodríguez Velázquez said.

“There were several complaints from neighbors that a group of migrants were ‘harassing’ people,” she said, adding that the authorities then decided to carry out an operation to apprehend the migrants and bring them to the centre.

Ms Rodríguez Velázquez said the government had discovered irregularities within a company that provided security for the facility, Grupo de Seguridad Privada CAMSA, and that its contract with migration authorities would be terminated.

“All investigations are underway to find out what really happened,” Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador told a press conference this week, adding that those responsible would be “punished according to law. “.

The US government has said it stands ready to help Mexico investigate the cause of the fire.

“We stand ready to provide any assistance,” State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said at a Tuesday press briefing, adding, “This tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks faced by migrants and refugees around the world”.

Indian temple well cover collapses, killing 35 people

NEW DELHI — Army soldiers and other responders found 35 bodies inside a well after a structure built over it collapsed as a large crowd of Hindu worshipers prayed during a festival for the god Rama, a state government official said on Friday.

Nearly 140 rescuers used ropes and ladders to pull the bodies out of the well after pumping out the water. A narrow path and debris in the shaft made it difficult.

Dozens of people fell into the shaft of the Indore temple complex in central Madhya Pradesh state when the structure collapsed on Thursday and was covered by falling debris, the commissioner said Police Makrand Deoskar.

Witnesses said a large crowd of worshipers thronged the temple to perform a fire ritual and celebrate the Hindu festival.

The structure apparently collapsed because it could not support the weight of the large crowd, said the state’s top elected official, Shivraj Singh Chauhan. He ordered an investigation.

“We have so far recovered 35 bodies and the rescue operation is continuing,” Ilayaraja T., a district administrator, said on Friday. A team of army rescuers joined the operation on Thursday evening.

Chouhan said 18 people were rescued and hospitalized with injuries.

The temple authorities had stopped using the well years ago and covered it with the structure.

The Times of India newspaper said rescue work was accelerated on Thursday night after underwater cameras showed bodies floating in the muddy waters of the well.

The mouth of the well was covered with iron gratings and tiles several years ago. In January, city officials ordered temple owners to remove the well cover because it was an unsafe and unauthorized structure, but temple authorities ignored the warning, the newspaper said.

Building collapses are common in India due to poor construction and non-compliance with regulations.

In October, a century-old cable suspension bridge collapsed into a river in the western state of Gujarat, sending hundreds plunging into the water and killing at least 132 in one of the worst country’s accidents over the past decade.

Your Questions About Trump’s Indictment Answered

Perhaps the strongest evidence of such a connection to politics is the timing: After months of requests, the money was wired to Daniels’ lawyer on October 27, 2016, just days before the election. 2016 presidential election.

What are the possible holes in the prosecution case?

It’s hard to assess the case against Trump without knowing the exact charges or all the evidence prosecutors gathered during an investigation that spanned more than four years. But based on publicly available information, legal experts have identified several features of the case that could present hurdles as prosecutors seek a guilty verdict.

For starters, Cohen isn’t the strongest possible witness for prosecutors. He provided much of the evidence and testimony needed to bring the case, which investigators went to great lengths to authenticate. But his credibility is questionable as he pleaded guilty in 2018 to nine felonies and was sentenced to three years in federal prison. He has also repeatedly expressed extreme bitterness toward Trump, even airing a podcast he titled “Mea Culpa,” an allusion to his regret for his time as Trump’s ally.

The case also dates from 2016 and 2017, so it is more than five years old. Some of the delay can be easily explained — bringing a criminal case against Trump while he was in office would have been difficult and possibly impossible. But it has been more than two years now since Trump left the White House.

Trump could argue that prosecutors waited too long. New York’s statute of limitations for most crimes is five years, but there are a few exceptions to that time frame, including if the accused person lived out of state.

Another potential difficulty: Prosecutors may have to prove that Trump knew the arrangement was illegal. Trump could argue that he correctly assumed that Cohen, as an attorney, was executing the payments and related documents in a legal manner.

Will Trump stay free? Can he campaign while under indictment?

That will be up to the state court judge handling Trump’s case, but it seems unlikely that prosecutors will seek to detain the former president or restrict his travel to the United States while the case is pending. Nothing legally prevents him from continuing his presidential campaign while facing criminal charges – or even if he is imprisoned.

If Trump wins the presidency while facing charges or a conviction, the legalities become considerably murkier. There are serious constitutional questions about whether a state court could bar someone elected to federal office from serving.

How will the indictment affect other ongoing investigations focused on Trump?

The short answer is: not a lot. There’s no reason to think the indictment in Manhattan will influence the trajectory of several other investigations that pose an acute risk of criminal prosecution against Trump. A grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia is reviewing his attempt to overturn the state’s election results, and federally, special counsel Jack Smith is leading twin investigations into Trump’s role in the attack on the January 6, 2021 against the Capitol and its retention of government records after its presidency.

Officially, a federal criminal case against Trump — if filed — would allow federal prosecutors to override any case or local case.

Simultaneous criminal charges against Trump would inevitably cause logistical problems, but usually federal and local prosecutors try to resolve any conflicts.

How long will it take for Trump to be brought to justice?

It will, of necessity, take many months to begin the trial of a former President of the United States. Although both sides were eager to move quickly to trial, the resolution of legal and constitutional issues would likely stretch into the next year and into the 2024 primary season.

Add to that Trump’s penchant — in nearly every legal case he’s involved in — to seek to delay and prolong proceedings whenever possible.

Trump’s lawyers could try to take the case to federal court, arguing that at least some of the payments to Cohen occurred while Trump was president and therefore a state court should not have the power to solve the case. Trump may also seek to move the trial to another courthouse elsewhere in New York state. And he could try to have the indictment dismissed or reduced. All of these pre-trial motions will take time to resolve.

A criminal tax case filed by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office against the Trump Organization in the same court in 2021 took about 15 months to go to trial. A jury convicted two Trump companies on all 17 felony counts last December. The issues in the new case are narrower, but the focus on Trump personally seems certain to drag things out.

Gwyneth Paltrow wins her ski crash case — and $1 in damages

Who skied into whom?

After only a little more than two hours of deliberation, a Utah jury unanimously decided that it was Gwyneth Paltrow who got slammed into by retired optometrist Terry Sanderson on the slopes of the Deer Valley Resort more than seven years ago — and not the other way around.

The verdict is a blow for Sanderson, who filed the lawsuit against Paltrow seeking $300,000 in damages for the injuries he sustained after she allegedly plowed into him. It is a vindication for the Oscar-winning actress, who countersued Sanderson for $1 and legal fees, saying he was to blame for the 2016 ski collision.

Sanderson, 76, hung his head as Judge Kent Holmberg read the jury’s decision on Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, the 50-year-old actress remained fairly expressionless, offering only a curt nod and a small smile to her lawyers and the jury.

“I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity,” Paltrow said in a statement through her attorneys.

“I am pleased with the outcome and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury, and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case,” Paltrow added.

Over the course of the trial, jurors heard from science and medical experts, eye witnesses — including written testimony from Paltrow’s children — and the famous actress herself.

Each legal team offered dueling versions of what happened on the mountain that day.

Sanderson’s attorneys argued that Paltrow was skiing recklessly down the mountain when she careened into him with a velocity that sent him “flying” in the air. As a result, he said, he suffered four broken ribs and lifelong brain damage.

“All I saw was a whole lot of snow. And I didn’t see the sky, but I was flying,” he testified last week.

During closing arguments, his lawyer, Robert Sykes, rejected claims that Sanderson is seeking fame and attention.

“Part of Terry will forever be on the Bandara run,” Sykes told the jury. “Bring Terry home.”

Lawrence Buhler, another of his attorneys, told jurors to consider awarding his client $3.2 million dollars in damages.

“When people get to know him, after a while, they don’t want to deal with him anymore,” Buhler said, adding that he’s known Sanderson for six years.

Buhler suggested Sanderson’s personality has changed dramatically during that period and that it has caused people to push him away. “You lose everybody — your family, they’ll put up with you, and maybe the lawyers. But, really, they’re just putting up with you,” Buhler added.

Meanwhile, Paltrow’s legal team maintained that she was the victim both in the incident at the ski resort and in the subsequent legal battle that has dragged on for years.

Paltrow testified that she’d been skiing with her children when Sanderson struck her from behind. In the confusion and shock of the blow, she told jurors, she thought someone was trying to sexually assault her.

She described his skis as coming between her own, forcing her legs apart and that she heard a “grunting noise” before they landed on the ground together.

Her attorney, Stephen Owens, also spent time grilling Sanderson about the severity of his injuries, questioning him about various trips and activities the retiree posted to social media after the so-called hit and run.

During closing arguments he told jurors that Paltrow had decided to take a stand in fighting Sanderson’s case. Owens said it would have been “easy” for Paltrow “to write a check and be done with it,” but that would have been wrong.

He added: “It’s actually wrong that he hurt her, and he wants money from her.”

Now, it’s clear she won’t have to pay it.
