Al Jaffee, longtime ‘Mad Magazine’ cartoonist, dies at 102

NEW YORK — Al Jaffee, Mad Magazine’s award-winning cartoonist and ageless wise guy who delighted millions of kids with the sneaky fun of the Fold-In and the snark of “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions,” has died. He was 102.

Jaffee died Monday in Manhattan from multiple organ failure, according to his granddaughter, Fani Thomson. He had retired at the age of 99.

Mad, with its wry, sometimes pointed send-ups of politics and culture, was essential reading for teens and preteens during the baby-boom era and inspiration for countless future comedians. Few of the magazine’s self-billed “Usual Gang of Idiots” contributed as much — and as dependably — as the impish, bearded cartoonist.

For decades, virtually every issue featured new material by Jaffee. His collected “Fold-Ins,” taking on everyone in his unmistakably broad visual style from the Beatles to TMZ, was enough for a four-volume box set published in 2011.

Readers savored his Fold-Ins like dessert, turning to them on the inside back cover after looking through such other favorites as Antonio Prohías’ “Spy. vs. Spy” and Dave Berg’s “The Lighter Side.” The premise, originally a spoof of the old Sports Illustrated and Playboy magazine foldouts, was that you started with a full-page drawing and question on top, folded two designated points toward the middle, and produced a new and surprising image, along with the answer.

The Fold-In was supposed to be a onetime gag, tried out in 1964 when Jaffee satirized the biggest celebrity news of the time: Elizabeth Taylor dumping her husband, Eddie Fisher, in favor of Cleopatra co-star Richard Burton. Jaffee first showed Taylor and Burton arm in arm on one side of the picture, and on the opposite side a young, handsome man being held back by a policeman.

Fold the picture in, and Taylor and the young man are kissing.

The idea was so popular that Mad editor Al Feldstein wanted a follow-up. Jaffee devised a picture of 1964 GOP presidential contenders Nelson Rockefeller and Barry Goldwater that, when collapsed, became an image of Richard Nixon.

“That one really set the tone for what the cleverness of the Fold-Ins has to be,” Jaffee told The Boston Phoenix in 2010. “It couldn’t just be bringing someone from the left to kiss someone on the right.”

‘Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions’ delivered exactly what it promised

Jaffee was also known for “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions,” which delivered exactly what the title promised. A comic from 1980 showed a man on a fishing boat with a noticeably bent reel. “Are you going to reel in the fish?” his wife asks. “No,” he says, “I’m going to jump into the water and marry the gorgeous thing.”

Jaffee didn’t just satirize the culture; he helped change it. His parodies of advertisements included such future real-life products as automatic redialing for a telephone, a computer spell checker and graffiti-proof surfaces. He also anticipated peelable stamps, multiblade razors and self-extinguishing cigarettes.

Jaffee’s admirers ranged from Charles M. Schulz of “Peanuts” fame and “Far Side” creator Gary Larson to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, who marked Jaffee’s 85th birthday by featuring a Fold-In cake on The Colbert Report. When Stewart and The Daily Show writers put together the best-selling America (The Book), they asked Jaffee to contribute a Fold-In.

“When I was done, I called up the producer who’d contacted me, and I said, ‘I’ve finished the Fold-In, where shall I send it?’ And he said — and this was a great compliment — ‘Oh, please Mr. Jaffee, could you deliver it in person? The whole crew wants to meet you,’ ” he told The Boston Phoenix.

Jaffee received numerous awards, and in 2013 was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, the ceremony taking place at San Diego Comic-Con International. In 2010, he contributed illustrations to Mary-Lou Weisman’s Al Jaffee’s Mad Life: A Biography. The following year, Chronicle Books published The MAD Fold-In Collection: 1964-2010.

A childhood split between the U.S. and Lithuania

Art was the saving presence of his childhood, which left him with permanent distrust of adults and authority. He was born in Savannah, Georgia, but for years was torn between the U.S., where his father (a department store manager) preferred to live, and Lithuania, where his mother (a religious Jew) longed to return. In Lithuania, Jaffee endured poverty and bullying, but also developed his craft. With paper scarce and no school to attend, he learned to read and write through the comic strips mailed by his father.

By his teens, he was settled in New York City and so obviously gifted that he was accepted into the High School of Music & Art. His schoolmates included Will Elder, a future Mad illustrator, and Harvey Kurtzmann, a future Mad editor. (His mother, meanwhile, remained in Lithuania and was apparently killed during the war).

He had a long career before Mad. He drew for Timely Comics, which became Marvel Comics, and for several years sketched the “Tall Tales” panel for the New York Herald Tribune. Jaffee first contributed to Mad in the mid-1950s. He left when Kurtzmann quit the magazine, but came back in 1964.

Mad lost much of its readership and edge after the 1970s, and Jaffee outlived virtually all of the magazine’s stars. But he rarely lacked for ideas even as his method, drawing by hand, remained mostly unchanged in the digital era.

“I’m so used to being involved in drawing and knowing so many people that do it, that I don’t see the magic of it,” Jaffee told the publication Graphic NYC in 2009. “If you reflect and think about it, I’m sitting down and suddenly there’s a whole big illustration of people that appears. I’m astounded when I see magicians work; even though I know they’re all tricks. You can imagine what someone thinks when they see someone drawing freehand and it’s not a trick. It’s very impressive.”

Tennessee Rep. Justin Jones returns to Capitol after Nashville Council reinstates him

NASHVILLE, Tenn — Nashville’s Metro Council has unanimously voted to reinstate freshman Democrat Justin Jones to his seat in the Tennessee House. The GOP-led legislature expelled Jones last week for gun reform protests he led on the chamber floor after the Covenant School shooting.

The vote puts Jones into the seat on an interim basis until a special election can be held for the seat.

“Justin Jones has been elected to the vacancy of Tennessee House 52 pursuant to the state law and the rules governing the Metropolitan Council,” Vice Mayor Jim Shulman announced at Monday’s specially called meeting, as cheers erupted in the gallery.

Jones returns to the state Capitol Monday

Shortly after the council vote, Jones returned to the Tennessee capitol to be sworn back into office amid a sea of media and supporters. He then made his way back to the House chamber, arm in arm with state Rep. Gloria Johnson of Knoxville, who narrowly escaped expulsion last week.

The unanimous vote

Metro Council rules ordinarily require members to wait four weeks before filling vacancies in the state legislature. It would have only taken two dissenting members to prevent a suspension of the rules. Had that happened, Tennessee’s legislative session may have been adjourned by the time Jones was reseated.

“I know that community members called and emailed us, and I think they did a great job because we didn’t have a single objection to suspension of the rules today,” said Council Member Sandra Sepulveda.

Ahead of the meeting, at least 30 councilmembers released statements declaring their intent to vote Jones back into the District 52 seat. He needed a simple majority of the 40-member council to reclaim the seat.

Meanwhile, in Shelby County, commissioners will meet Wednesday to discuss reappointing fellow ousted Rep. Justin Pearson, also a Democrat.

Since the expulsions of the two young Black lawmakers, Black leaders have called the move racist and hypocritical. Johnson, who escaped expulsion, is the only one among the three who is white.

In a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts, Senator Dick Durbin writes that the Senate Judiciary Committee will soon hold a hearing on the Supreme Court’s ethical standards following a report on the lavish trips Justice Clarence Thomas took to a friend – a major GOP donor – but did not disclose.

Patrick Semansky/AP

The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to hold a hearing on “the need to restore confidence in the ethical standards of the Supreme Court,” wrote panel chairman Sen. Dick Durbin in a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts. following the revelations from ProPublica last week. that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas accepted a luxury vacation from a major GOP donor, but did not disclose it.

In his letter, Durbin also urged Roberts to “immediately initiate … an investigation and take all necessary steps to prevent further wrongdoing” in court.

“And if the Court does not resolve this issue on its own, the Committee will consider legislation to resolve it,” the letter states.

Justice Thomas' travel report renews calls for Supreme Court code of conduct

ProPublica reported last Thursday on trips made by Thomas and his wife, Ginni, a conservative activist, who were paid for by Harlan Crow. Vacations included cruises and private flights over decades that could cost millions of dollars; Thomas did not report them as part of his annual financial disclosure, according to the report.

Thomas responded last week, saying he ‘had been advised that this kind of personal hospitality from close personal friends, who had no court business, was not to be reported’ . In a statement, he described Crow and his wife, Kathy, as “very dear friends.” In the statement, Thomas noted that the disclosure guidelines are being changed that “it is … my intention to follow these guidelines in the future.”

Judge Thomas explains why he didn't report the billionaire's paid trips

In his letter to Roberts, Durbin noted that this was not the first time members of his panel had written to the Chief Justice about concerns over the court’s ethical standards, adding that 11 years ago, the panel had urged Roberts to bring the Supreme Court to abide by the Judicial Conference Code of Conduct for Judges of the United States, which is binding on all judges in the federal judiciary except Supreme Court justices . Roberts declined at the time, responding that “the Court had no reason to adopt the Code of Conduct as the definitive source of ethical guidance.”

“We submit that the Court has compelling reasons to do so, and urge the speedy adoption of the code of conduct,” Durbin wrote in his letter Monday. “While last month’s revision to the Judicial Conference’s guidelines on judicial financial disclosures was a modest step in the right direction, further steps are needed.”

“Does Macron speak for Europe?”

Slamming recent comments by French President Emmanuel Macron, who appeared to be advocating a move away from Europe from the United States, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) called for clarification whether other European nations support Macron’s position and to readjust our alliance accordingly.

In a roughly two-minute clip, Rubio began by quoting Macron’s speech comments to reporters after his visit to China, including his position that Europe should “detach” from the United States and “not depend on the dollar”, as well as the need to avoid conflicts “which are not their[s]” like the one on Taiwan.

We need to know if @EmmanuelMacron speak for Europe

After his 6-hour meeting in China, he told reporters that Europe should create distance from the United States and should not get involved in supporting America over China in what concerns Taiwanhttps://t.co/xoFmUGkumH pic.twitter.com/Ps718bXSyn

—Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) April 9, 2023

It was the French president’s first trip to China in four years.

Rubio, who is vice-chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence and a senior member of the Foreign Relations Committee, also shared Politics interview with Macron which contained his full comments.

Calling it “a good time for us to ask Europe [whether] Macron speaks[s] for all of Europe”, Rubio wondered if the French president was now “the head of Europe” and “the most powerful leader in Europe”.

“Because if he is, there are some things we will have to change,” he said.

Europe and “France in particular,” he noted, “have been heavily dependent on the United States for seventy years for their own defense.”

“In fact, when Macron tried to play the role of global superpower and sent troops to North Africa to fight terrorists, he couldn’t even send his own troops there,” Rubio said. “We had to fly them there and we had to fly them back; he could not even send his own troops there.

“So if they decide to break up on their own and follow Macron’s example, it will save us a lot of money,” he added.

Regarding the French leader’s remarks on Europe’s involvement in “conflicts that are not ours”, Rubio expressed the need to “ask Europe, does he speak for them?”

“We are quite heavily involved in Ukraine at the moment [and] we’re spending a lot of our taxpayers’ money on a European war, and I supported that because I think it’s in the national interest of the United States to be allies of our allies,” did he declare.

However, he warned, “if, in fact, Macron is speaking on behalf of all of Europe, and their current position is that they are not going to choose sides between the United States and China on Taiwan; maybe we shouldn’t choose sides either.

“Maybe we should basically say we’re going to focus on Taiwan and the threats from China, and you’re dealing with Ukraine and Europe,” he said.

“So we have to know, is Macron speaking for Macron or is Macron speaking for Europe?” he added. “And we need to get the response pretty quickly because China is very excited about what he said.”

Although China “enthusiastically supports[s] everything he said,” Rubio claimed that Macron apparently “said even worse.”

“But the French presidency insisted that all journalists who got this interview wanted to review the transcript and they apparently took back even more aggressive things he said,” he said.

“So we need to know where Europe is at,” he concluded.

The remarks follow an interview published on Sunday which quoted Macron as saying that Europe must not be a “follower” of the United States or China in Taiwan in order to avoid “crises that are not ours”.

“The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans have to be followers and adapt to the American pace and a Chinese overreaction,” he told media after returning from a three-day state visit on Friday.

In response, Kyle Orton, a terrorism and national security researcher and analyst, accused Macron of having “really outdone himself with this crawling to China.”

#FrancePresident Macron has really outdone himself with this crawling at #China. https://t.co/m2sgvqO9Xp

— Kyle Orton (@KyleWOrton) April 9, 2023

The case comes after Chinese fighter jets and warships simulated strikes on Taiwan in a three-day operation after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with the Speaker of the House of States United, Kevin McCarthy, California.

China claims democratic Taiwan as part of its territory to be taken one day, by force if necessary.

Two owls are spotted hiding in plain sight: Can you find them?

Two wise owls show they’re no birdbrains when it comes to camouflage – because they’ve been caught hiding in plain sight on a dry stone wall.

Wildlife photographer Villager Jim snapped the pair when he saw them using an old wall and a barn as the perfect cover, SWNS reported.

The clever birds blend effortlessly into their surroundings: their gray and brown plumage blends perfectly with the masonry.

The photographer challenged people to find the little birds in a game he calls “Hunt the Little Owl”.

He recently captured the “undercover” owls while out for a walk in the village of Foolow in the Peak District, England.

The photographer – who has been capturing animals with his camera for 14 years – said the birds are creatures of habit and often return to previous perch points, as reported by SWNS.

He said, “It’s been since I named them all that it’s kind of made people really identify with finding them.”

“They are doing very well, the little owls – their population is increasing.”

He added: “They’re hard to spot. I have a trip that I do. It’s been built around creating a route around where certain birds are nesting. I’m guaranteed or almost guaranteed to catch them. see every day.”

He also said: “I hit the road every day, 365 [days a year], even on Christmas Day. It’s the best job in the world, I love it.”

Bodies of Lotus drummer Chuck Morris and his son found

The bodies of Chuck Morris, a musician best known as the percussionist of the band Lotus, and his son, Charley, have been found 24 days after the couple disappeared during a kayaking trip in Arkansas, the authorities confirmed on Sunday. authorities.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office began its search for Morris and his son after they disappeared March 16, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities said the bodies were recovered thanks to the technology and efforts of the Carroll County Mennonite Disaster Service and the Tennessee Christian Aid Ministries Search and Rescue team, which used remotely operated underwater vehicles in a “harsh environment” that traversed depths of 180 feet.

“Sheriff Holloway, along with the family of Chuck and Charley, would like to thank all of the men and women who volunteered their time and effort to help bring the family together and find the two missing men.” said the sheriff’s office.

“Our hearts go out to the family of Chuck and Charley Morris and we are grateful today to be able to help bring this to an end,” the sheriff’s office said.

The couple went missing while kayaking on Beaver Lake, a reservoir in the northwest corner of the state, in mid-March, prompting the launch of a massive recovery effort.

The effort included dive teams, boats, dogs and more from multiple agencies, according to Benton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lt. Shannon Jenkins.

But days after the search began, the operation became a recovery effort.

“This lake is a serious challenge to search, but we’re doing everything we can,” said Tony Wade, director of operations for Cajun Coast Search and Rescue. CBS Colorado.

Water temperatures in the lake had dropped between 30 and 40 years in the days after the kayakers disappeared, CBS Colorado reported. People can only survive for a maximum of about 90 minutes in water between 35 and 40 degrees, according to the US Coast Guard Auxillary.

The story continues

“You would instantly be in shock,” Wade said. “It’s 100% recovery.”

Days after the disappearance, other Lotus members said they feared Morris and his son were dead.

“We were all hoping for a miracle, but at this point the search for Chuck & Charley has shifted to a resumption. With the help of K9 teams, there is a likely location on the lake, but logistical challenges such as weather , the weather and depth have prevented a recovery so far”, the group writing on Twitter on March 21.

“While we mourn deeply, we plan to celebrate Chuck and Charley’s life, our memories with them and what they meant to so many,” the band added.

A Major League Soccer player said an opponent made a racist remark during a game

A Major League Soccer player allegedly made a racist remark during a game Saturday night, and now the league is investigating.

The match-up between the San Jose Earthquakes and the New York Red Bulls came to a halt after a player said he heard an opposing competitor use a racist epithet on the pitch.

“The racist remark was said. I do not believe it was to me,” Earthquakes forward Jeremy Ebobisse said in a post-game press conference without naming the other player.

“Also important to note that racial epithets, language, cannot be hurled in any direction — whether it was to a Black player or not — because that would open any number of doors themselves,” Ebobisse added.

MLS said in a statement that it would open an investigation into the incident and that the league has “zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language and takes these allegations seriously.”

The Red Bulls echoed that sentiment and said the club would cooperate with the league’s investigation.

Earthquakes head coach Luchi Gonzalez said later that he urged Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber to remove the player who allegedly made the racist remark from the game.

“I definitely was adamant to suggest the player should not be on the field anymore,” Gonzalez said. “I know it’s an accusation, but I believe my players. I trust my players. If they say something, they’re high-character human beings before professional soccer players, so I would trust that it’s true.”

The game ultimately ended in a 1-1 tie.
