Nicolas Cage on Brief Surprise ‘The Flash’ Cameo: “Glad I Didn’t Blink”

[Warning: This story contains spoilers for The Flash.]

Nicolas Cage is sharing his thoughts on his surprise cameo as Superman in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash.

During an interview with USA Today, published online Thursday, the Oscar-winning actor said it was fulfilling to finally see the character come to life decades after the 1998 film Superman Lives was scrapped.

“Well, I was glad I didn’t blink,” he quipped. “For me, it was the feeling of being actualized. Even that look for that particular character, finally seeing it on screen, was satisfying. But as I said, it’s quick.”

Related Stories

In The Flash, Cage appears during a scene when Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen opens the multiverse to see the different universes. That’s when Barry sees Cage as Superman fighting a giant spider as well as Christopher Reeve’s Superman, Helen Slater’s Supergirl, Adam West’s Batman and George Reeve’s Superman.

Warner Bros. ended up calling off the infamous 1998 movie just weeks before filming was set to begin, citing creative differences.

For those who still wonder what Cage had in store for his character if the movie was actually completed, he suggested looking at his “performance in City of Angels.”

“I was supposed [to play] Clark Kent after that [in Superman Lives], and I was already developing this alien otherness playing this angel,” he told the outlet. “That is a perfect example of the tonality you would’ve gotten for Kal-El and for Clark Kent: Clark would’ve been a little more amusing but Kal-El [had] the sensitivity and the goodness and the vulnerability and all those feelings that were kind of angelic and also terrifying.”

Last month, filmmaker Kevin Smith, who initially penned several draft screenplays for the scrapped Superman Lives movie, reacted to seeing his vision of Cage as Superman in Muschietti’s film.

“I finally got to see Nic Cage be Superman,” Smith told Rolling Stone. “It has been an absolute delight for me.” He added that it was “mind-melting” after seeing the scene.

Mark Ronson Says He Wouldn’t Let Bradley Cooper Use Lady Gaga’s “Joanne” for ‘A Star Is Born’

Mark Ronson may have scored an Oscar for “Shallow” in A Star Is Born, but he revealed that it wasn’t Bradley Cooper’s first choice for the movie’s hit song.

In an interview with NME, published online Thursday, the Barbie music composer said he was working on Lady Gaga’s fifth studio album at the same time that Cooper was in the planning process for the movie.

“We were working on Gaga’s album Joanne and Bradley Cooper stopped by the studio one afternoon. I like his films. He showed up looking like a movie star. So we hung out,” Ronson recalled. “He was really sweet, talking about this new script that they were both doing. I played him the song called ‘Joanne’ and he’s like, ‘That’s great, can I have it?’”

Related Stories

The music producer said he knew Cooper was a “big star and everything,” but he didn’t want to give up the title track because he liked it so much. Ronson added, “I kind of needed it for Gaga’s record.”

Lady Gaga released the album Joanne in 2016, which scored the singer her fourth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Although Cooper didn’t get to use the title track for his 2018 movie, which he directed and starred in, alongside Gaga, Ronson said he agreed to find time in his schedule to work on a new song for the film with the Grammy-winning singer. He even remembers the exact moment that he knew he had a smash hit on his hands with “Shallow.”

“We were working in this incredible studio in Malibu, [Los Angeles] – Rick Rubin’s studio, Shangri La – and it had this really long echoey hallway,” he said. “I have this very distinct memory of Gaga’s voice coming from 30 feet away, sounding so excited about something as she came in. She sat down at the piano and started singing ‘I’m off the deep end…’”

In 2018, during The Hollywood Reporter‘s Songwriter Roundtable, Ronson shared some insight into his approach to songwriting, particularly with Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born. “For better or for worse, the best songs come when you’re going through a trying time, really,” he told the roundtable at the time. “That’s what I find. And luckily, life will always find a way to deal you a shit hand every now and then. So I feel like, that’s the good thing about it — the well won’t run dry, because I feel like, you’ll always have those kind of life experiences.”

“And in that place, whether it’s an Amy Winehouse or whoever it is, I get to sort of tap into their well of giant emotion for a little while,” Ronson continued. “And sometimes it’s not even fair because I’m going along for the ride on their horrible, tragic life experiences.”

But he noted that “every new project just rejuvenates” him as he’s “always getting into someone else’s life experience and seeing how that matches up with my own.”

A Star Is Born went on to win the Academy Award for best original song, as well as earning seven other Oscar nominations, including for best picture of the year.

THR has reached out to Cooper’s rep for comment.

Seth Rogen on Why He’s Turned Off From Marvel and DC Projects: “It’s a Fear of the Process”

Seth Rogen is always looking for a good indie comic to adapt for the screen, but he has a reason for avoiding Marvel and DC comics.

During a recent interview with Polygon, the actor-writer-producer, who is currently preparing for the release of his latest animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem on Aug. 2, revealed why “fear” has turned him off from teaming up with these other major movie franchises.

“We really have a pretty specific way we work; me and Evan [Goldberg] have been writers for 20 years at this point,” he explained. “It’s a fear of the process, honestly. And I say that knowing nothing about the process. There are a lot of Marvel things I love.”

Related Stories

Rogen continued, “It’s mostly a fear of how would we plug into the system they have in place, which seems like a very good system, and a system that serves them very well. But is it a system that we would ultimately get really frustrated with?”

The Platonic star emphasized that he and his writing partner prefer to feel like they have control and creative freedom with the projects they take on.

“What’s nice about [Mutant Mayhem] is that we’re the producers of this,” he added. “So we dictated the system, and we dictated the process in a lot of ways. And that’s what’s also appealing for us about The Boys and the other bigger franchise-y type things we’ve done, is that we are creating the infrastructure and process for them, not plugging into someone else’s infrastructure and process. We’re control freaks!”

Earlier this year, Rogen told Total Film magazine that he does credit the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s content for making The Boys, based on a comic book series, possible, saying it “wouldn’t exist or be interesting” without the studio. “I think that Kevin Feige is a brilliant guy, and I think a lot of the filmmakers he’s hired to make these movies are great filmmakers,” he said at the time. “But as someone who doesn’t have children … It is [all] kind of geared towards kids, you know? There are times where I will forget. I’ll watch one of these things, as an adult with no kids, and be like, ‘Oh, this is just not for me.’”

When it comes to finding comics that do pique his interest, Rogen told Polygon that he first, looks for anything that’s not Marvel or DC which “eliminates a lot right away,” and then seeks comics that have room for expansion.

“I would go to the comic book shop [when I was younger] and I would just walk around. And you see this comic book and it catches your eye, and you see that comic book and it catches your eye,” he said. “Those have been the things that have really inspired us and made us want to work on these things for a long time — coupled with the inclination that you have something to add to it. There are a lot of comic books I love and things I love, but I’m like, What would I add?

Psychologist weighs in on why exactly fans worship celebrities

Fans of pop mega-star Taylor Swift are in their obsession era.

As the star continues her international Eras Tour, “Swifties” around the world aren’t holding back on expressing their Taylor love.

But the fandom extends far past Swift, since celebrity infatuation has spanned generations including the passion and mania for The Beatles to the admiration of Harry Styles.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, NYU Langone psychologist Dr. Yamalis Diaz explained what occurs in the human brain when someone adores a celebrity.

Teens and young adults are at a “very sensitive developmental period,” said Diaz, who specializes in child and adolescent psychology. She teaches a class at NYU on identity and mental health in young adulthood.

This stage of development is also when identity forms, she explained, so an attachment to influential people who may seem “cool,” “beautiful” or “popular” comes naturally.

“People essentially value and reinforce these celebrities in the way that teenagers wish people would see them,” she said.

“It could be that they want to be like [them] or just want to love this person because of how amazing they are.”

Swift, in particular, projects an image of being “relatable” by sticking up for the underdog and being “real,” Diaz noted.

This conversation cannot be had without mentioning the influence of social media, Diaz emphasized, as fans today have constant and “intimate” access to their favorite celebrities.

“That is the reason we’re seeing the obsession take over in a much bigger way,” she said.

“There is this big clash between fans trying to figure out who they are and then having 100% access to their celebrity idols … That’s where the obsessive component starts to take over.”

With fans having this steady access, Diaz said that “happy hormones” in the brain, such as dopamine, are consistently released and reinforced each time something new is uploaded to social media.

“Dopamine also plays a role in how teenagers become so obsessed with certain celebrities because every time they consume information, every time they see a new video, every time they see a new post, every time they go live … their dopamine circuitry is being dinged,” she said.

Influencers, celebrities and brand managers are aware of this addictive behavior, according to Diaz.

This is one of the reasons that celebrities post frequently on social media, she suggeseted.

“They need to keep the little dopamine drip going,” she said. “If you go for too long and you’re not giving people access to you, the dopamine dries up a little bit, so this is [how] they are making sure fans stay super connected.”

Diaz referenced the chemicals in the brain that are released when people fall in love, including dopamine, oxytocin (known as the “cuddle hormone”) and adrenaline.

While dopamine will “rush in” when someone sees something exciting, Diaz used the emotions related to anticipating a concert as an example of how adrenaline can also ebb and flow, explaining what’s known as “post-concert depression.”

“As soon as you hear about the concert, if this is your person, dopamine and adrenaline are starting to rush,” she said.

“Then you’re getting the tickets. Then you’re planning the road trip to the concert and what you’re going to wear … And then it’s over.”

She added, “And so, your brain starts to deactivate the dopamine and the adrenaline, which results in a post-concert crash.”

Many people who attend concerts can also be converted into fans, Diaz said, due to the dopamine that’s released during a show that entertains and excites.

This “chemical high” affects concertgoers of all ages, especially when the performance sparks a sense of childish nostalgia, she said, as was the case for many fans at Swift’s Eras Tour, which was based on the albums of her past.

“Music has the ability to transfer you back to a time, a moment or an experience,” Diaz said. “And so, with somebody like Taylor Swift or any major artist who has been around for a little while, it cuts across generations.”

For teenagers, a celebrity crush might be the first time they’re exploring romantic feelings or a physical attraction that is “developmentally appropriate,” the psychologist said.

But an infatuation with a celeb could become inappropriate if it’s all-consuming, Diaz said.

It can turn into what’s known as “celebrity worship syndrome” — or “obsessive-addictive disorder,” according to the mental health site PsychCentral.

Although the condition isn’t clinically recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), Diaz said it can be concerning.

The “line of normalcy” is crossed when a fan consumes hours of celebrity content that interferes with the ability to connect with people in everyday life.

“Where we as mental health clinicians would become very concerned is if the imagery they have in their minds about what’s perfect, what’s beautiful … really affects the way they feel about themselves,” Diaz said.

“They may start engaging in critical comparisons where they’re constantly looking to that person to find the faults in themselves.”

“And if I’m a teenager whose identity is fragile to begin with, that’s a very real concern for us, because that could potentially lead to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and potentially even feelings of worthlessness.”

Diaz encouraged parents of teens and young adults to pay attention to how their children are engaging with social media and interacting with their celebrity idols.

They should reach out for professional help if needed, she also said.

Man who spent $20K to transform himself into border collie steps out for first-ever walk in public

A Japanese man who spent more than $20,000 to become a dog has finally taken his first walk and immediately made some canine friends.

Known only as Toco, the man spent two million Yen (A$22,000) on a hyperrealistic border collie costume to fulfil his lifelong dream of “becoming an animal”.

In recent updates shared with his almost 30,000 YouTube subscribers, Toco was seen playing in his backyard on all fours and performing tricks in exchange for treats.

But now he has ventured into public for the first time to reveal his new look.

In a pair of surreal videos posted to his YouTube channel ‘I want to be an animal’, Toco was seen being taken out for a walk on a leash, sniffing at other dogs in a park and rolling around on the floor.

Toco’s grand debut — which was captured while he was filming a segment for a German TV station — seemed to be well-received by passers-by and other dogs, who appeared curious. It wasn’t clear whether they realised Toco wasn’t a natural-born dog.

“I became a collie, fulfilling a dream I had since I was a little child to be an animal!” subtitles at the beginning of the video read.

In an introduction to his YouTube channel, Toco explained via a series of written notes translated from Japanese (he doesn’t speak in the videos, since he wants to be a dog): “Nice to meet you. I became a rough (sic) collie because I wanted to be an animal … Please let me know your request for the video you would like to see in the comments!”

Toco says he hides his human identity because he doesn’t want to be judged by people he knows.

“I don’t want my hobbies to be known, especially by the people I work with,” he told the Daily Mail last year.

“They think it’s weird that I want to be a dog. For the same reason why I can’t show my real face.”

“I rarely tell my friends because I am afraid they will think I am weird,’ he said in a separate interview with the Mirror.

“My friends and family seemed very surprised to learn I became an animal.”

In a clip of his first outdoor walk, which took place in September in his backyard, rather than in public, Toco said he felt “nervous and a little scared”.

“I’m very nervous,” he said in the video.

“Do you remember your dreams from when you are little? You want to be a hero or a wizard.

“I remember writing in my grade school graduation book that I wanted to be a dog and walk outside.”

Japanese company Zeppet, which makes costumes for TV commercials and films, spent 40 days making Toco’s $22,000 outfit.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Modeled after a collie dog, it reproduces the appearance of a real dog walking on four legs.”

Arthur children’s book faces possible Florida ban over fear it ‘damaged souls’

It’s not a wonderful kind of day.

A beloved “Arthur” children’s book has been banned in Clay County, Florida, after a local school district member claims the 1989 title has “damaged souls,” reported the Guardian.

The lighthearted Marc Brown book in question, “Arthur’s Birthday,” now joins 45 other titles on probation “pending oversight committee review,” all thanks to activist Bruce Friedman.

Rest assured, he just wants to “protect children” from the aardvark in question.

The grown man’s gripe with the page-turner is its brief reference to “spin the bottle.” In his letter to officials, Friedman insists that the kissing game “is not appropriate to discuss” with kids.

“‘Spin the bottle’ not okay for K-5 kids,” he added in all caps.

In response to the malarkey, the Florida Freedom to Read Project clapped back on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, in a message targeted at the proposed ban.

“The entire book is about being inclusive of all friends and not only inviting boys or girls (based on your gender) to your birthday party,” the organization wrote.

This isn’t the first time that Friedman has gotten worked up about the contents of school library shelves.

Last year, according to Popular Information, he compiled “a list of over 3,600 titles that [he believes] have concerning content.”

My sister’s wedding was ruined when the hotel staff went on strike

A woman went viral on TikTok sharing how hotel staff ruined her sister’s wedding by going on strike.

Lauren West shared several clips showing the mayhem that ensued when her family arrived at the Doubletree in San Pedro, California, over the weekend to celebrate her sib’s big day.

“It’s my sister’s wedding and the hotel staff are striking next to the venue,” she explains in a TikTok video that quickly gathered over 1.8 million viewers.

The quick clip showed a large group of people holding signs and protesting just a few feet away from the beautifully decorated outdoor dining area.

“We hoped they would be respectful but as it gets closer to the wedding @UNITE HERE! is sending even more strikers to bombard my sister’s wedding, and where is @HiltonByDoubleTree???” she asks in the caption.

In another TikTok video, West showed another angle of the debacle as the upset hotel employees marched in circles just outside the venue.

“Doubletree San Pedro hotel strikers are disrupting my sister’s wedding and Doubletree isn’t doing anything about it,” West wrote in a follow-up TikTok video.

She claimed that while the workers were initially striking in front of the lobby some moved directly outside of the wedding venue right before the ceremony was set to start. televisionofnomads/TikTok

Maria Hernandez, a rep for Unite Here Local 11, told the Sun that the workers “were on strike fighting for a fair contract with livable wages, pension, healthcare and safer workloads.”

However, West insisted Hilton Doubletree “explain what they’re doing to their employees to make them believe it’s acceptable to ruin an innocent person’s wedding.”

“There are ethical ways to strike working conditions without dragging an innocent family into the crossfire. I wouldn’t wish this on any of the @UNITE HERE! families.”

She explained that while the strikers were initially demonstrating in front of the lobby, some moved directly outside the wedding venue right before the ceremony was set to start.

West claimed that her nieces were “terrified … on a day that should be happy and full of love.”

“These strikers are out here making kids cry. This is not what unions are about. And Double Tree San Pedro hasn’t reached out AT ALL to remedy this,” she said. “We’ve been calling repeatedly to make this right. My sister deserves compensation for this distress.”

When a commenter asked, “Have you asked them to move, they are fighting for their rights,” West posted a follow-up vid, explaining the family decided to move the “wedding ceremony indoors because the hotel strikers were trying to disrupt it.”

West notes that she and her family only learned of the strike, then in its first day, one hour before they arrived.

“The wedding was already paid in full. My family can’t afford to sacrifice that money,” she added.

A rep from Doubletree told the Sun that “making sure our guests have a great experience is our top priority, which is why our entire team is always ready to find creative solutions … when plans need to change.”

The hotel that its team responded quickly, “including offering up an alternate on-site location away from the outside area” and providing “complimentary perks and rewards, such as bar service.”

However, West denies these claims.

West and Doubletree did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

NASA+ is the space agency’s very own streaming platform

NASA is launching its very own streaming platform called NASA+ sometime this summer. While the space agency already livestreams launches and other events on its website, NASA+ will feature not just live broadcasts, but also collections of original video series. A handful of the first shows on the platform will even be new titles launching with the service, and what’s even better is that it will be free and will not be interrupting shows with ads. In other words, it’s where you should go if you want to binge watch NASA and space content.

The streaming service will be available through the agency’s iOS and Android apps on mobile devices. You’ll also be able to access it on desktop and mobile browsers, as well as stream shows on demand through media players, such as Roku, Apple TV and Fire TV.

Marc Etkind from NASA’s Office of Communications said:

“We’re putting space on demand and at your fingertips with NASA’s new streaming platform. Transforming our digital presence will help us better tell the stories of how NASA explores the unknown in air and space, inspires through discovery, and innovates for the benefit of humanity.”

[embedded content]

In addition to introducing its own streaming service, NASA is also giving its whole digital presence an overhaul. It’s currently working on a new web (and app) experience that can better consolidate information about its missions, research projects and updates about the Artemis program, among other things. NASA has numerous websites for different programs and divisions, but the new experience will include content from several of them. It will also feature integrated navigation and search function for easier access to information across NASA websites. You can visit the beta version of the upgraded web experience right now, but take note that the agency plans to connect more libraries and websites to it even after it’s been fully launched.

5 Effects Space Has On The Human Body

If you were to blast off for space, one of the first things that might happen to your body is space adaptation syndrome, also known as space sickness. A constellation of symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and headaches, are all common reactions to space travel, with Smithsonian Magazine reporting 70–90% of space shuttle passengers experiencing at least some level of space sickness.

Space sickness is not infectious but instead might be thought of as similar to car sickness. The sensation of weightlessness can cause misalignment between what the eyes observe and what the inner ears feel, leading to dizziness and retching. The parabolic flights used to simulate zero gravity for astronauts and civilians alike are nicknamed “vomit comets” for just this reason.

Some medications can help, but they may also come with their own symptoms, like drowsiness, which might be something a spacecraft pilot would be keen to avoid. There are also some behaviors the crew can adopt to prevent triggering space sickness, such as agreeing to remain right-side-up with respect to the spacecraft and each other.

The good news is that the human body is incredibly adaptable and usually learns to compensate for the lack of gravity within a day or two. The bad news? Returning to Earth can trigger the whole thing all over again in the form of “gravity sickness.”

AMD plans to invest $400 million in India by 2028

AMD plans to invest around $400 million in India over the next five years and set up its largest design center in the country’s southern city of Bengaluru as the chipmaker joins the growing list of firms that are backing the South Asian nation’s ambition of becoming a semiconductor manufacturing hub.

AMD CTO Mark Papermaster announced the chipmaker’s investment plans on Friday at the annual semiconductor conference SemiconIndia 2023 in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat.

“Our investment will build on over two decades of growth and successful presence here in India,” said Papermaster in his keynote.

AMD will expand its footprint in India with the opening of its new design center in Bengaluru by the end of this year. Covering an area of 500,000 square feet, this new facility will bring the total number of AMD offices in India to 10, including locations in Delhi, Gurugram, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

“Through these investments, AMD will further expand our R&D capabilities in India to be able to drive our semiconductor design innovation in support of the government’s India semiconductor mission and drive to make India a strong semiconductor talent and nation,” he added.

The Santa Clara-headquartered company, which started its operations in the South Asian nation 22 years ago in 2001, has over 6,500 employees as well as 3,000 partners and contractors in the country. The chipmaker is expected to expand its workforce in the country with 3,000 additional engineers by the end of 2028.

“We welcome the AMD plan to expand its leading-edge R&D engineering operations in India,” said Indian electronics and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Other industry executives, including Foxconn Chairman Young Liu, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra and Applied Materials semiconductor products group president Prabu Raja, are also in attendance at the conference.

India is looking to become the next big hub for semiconductors globally. In 2021, the Narendra Modi-led government announced a $10 billion incentive program to attract chipmakers to set up local facilities in the country. However, the government had to tweak the scheme in June as the original version did not receive the expected response from global companies.

In June, semiconductor manufacturer Applied Materials announced a $400 million investment to set up its engineering center in India. Computer memory and data storage maker Micron also unveiled a plan to invest up to $825 million last month to build a semiconductor plant in the country.

“I welcome AMD’s decision to set up its largest R&D design center in India and expansion of the India-AMD partnership. It will certainly play an important role in building a world-class semiconductor design and innovation ecosystem. It will also provide tremendous opportunities for our large pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers and will catalyze PM Narendra Modi’s vision of India becoming a global talent hub,” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, minister of state for electronics and IT, skill development and entrepreneurship.
