Interview with Ron Corbin, author of Beyond Recognition

I had finished my 2nd tour in Vietnam in 1969. There was no end in sight to the war, so I didn't want to push my luck and maybe get deployed a 3rd time, thus I got out of the Army.
For the next year or so, I wasn't able to find a flying job that would support a family. When I saw an LAPD recruiting ad on TV, I applied, knowing that they had a helicopter support unit. In 1971, I was accepted into the LAPD Academy, and spent a few years as a patrol officer before being selected into their Air Support Division.
What prompted the move to Vegas?
The birth of our first grandchild. Our oldest son was an LVMPD (Metro) police officer. When he and his wife had their baby daughter, "Grandma" had to be closer than the 300 miles from where we lived in Simi Valley.

My wife and I still cruise a lot, but deteriorating hearing loss has prevented me from doing on-board lectures anymore. I can't field questions very well from the attendees.
How did you get into writing?
When I was a civilian with LVMPD (after retiring from LAPD and moving to Vegas), for eight years the department had me in a position to be the editor of their training publications. Other than the department’s graphic artist, I was a "one-man-show" of producing a 60-80 page, in-house training magazine called the Training Wheel. It required more work than a simple newsletter, so besides finding civilian and commissioned employees to submit articles, I ended up having to write many portions of the magazine.

Once I retired from LV Metro in 2011, I decided to write my memoirs from my LAPD helicopter crash that had happened in 1976. Not really intending to seek a publisher, but only leaving the true story of what happened for my children and grandchildren, I was fortunate to informally meet a publisher who, in our social conversation, asked to see my manuscript. The rest is history. "Beyond Recognition," got published and won a First Place Award for the Public Safety Writers Association in 2013.

My wife, Kathy, had a two-part story accepted into a published anthology by Mike Lazares, titled "We Gotta Get Out of This Place (vol.3)". She reflects back on how she coped as a wife surviving her worries and fears for my times as an Army combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam. Then the second part she tells what she went through as a wife and mother of three when I crashed as a LAPD helicopter pilot, and the aftermath of my receiving 70% burns.
You've also contributed stories in several anthologies. What stories in what books are yours?

1. Your Husband---My Partner (A Letter to Lesa); "True Blue---Police Stories By Those Who Lived Them"; Sgt. Randy Sutton.
2. Close Encounters of the Cop Kind; "True Blue---To Protect And Serve"; Lt. Randy Sutton.
3. Those Daring Young Men, and Where There's Hope; "I Pledge Allegiance..."; Wednesday Warriors Writers.

5. Flying in Boxer Shorts; "We Gotta Get Out of This Place"; Michael D. Lazares.
6. Hamburger Hill Haunts; "We Gotta Get Out of This Place- vol. 2"; Michael D. Lazares.
7. Those Daring Young Men; "We Gotta Get Out of This Place- vol. 3"; Michael D. Lazares.
8. Tell My Wife I Love Her; "Best Poets of 2016-vol. 3"; Eber & Wein Publishing.
Do you offer any signed copies of your books?
Sometimes, mostly for gifts or as door prizes at conferences.
Do you have any signing events planned for next year?
No, not at his time.

Interview with Robert L. Bryan, author of C-Case

C-Case sounds extremely interesting. How did you wind up going from NYC Transit to Internal Affairs?
NYC had three police departments operating within the City. Besides the NYPD, the transit police was responsible for the subways and the housing police handled the city housing projects. In 1995 there was a merger eliminating the transit and housing police departments in favor of one NYPD with transit and housing bureaus. When I became a member of the NYPD after the merger, I applied for an investigative assignment and ended up being drafted into IAB. I was required to stay in IAB for two years before moving to Narcotics.

You also spent time with the US Coast Guard and US Border Patrol. Were you living in New York then?
With the Border Patrol I was assigned to duty on the Mexican Border in California. In the Coast Guard, besides training, I was assigned locally. I was stationed at Station Eaton’s Neck, a search and rescue station, and Port Jefferson, a port security unit.

Any books in the works, maybe, from your experiences in the Coast Guard or Border Patrol?
I am considering a book on the Border Patrol. I am beginning to understand the benefits of writing books in a series, and I am thinking about making DARK KNIGHTS a series. Dark Knights illustrated the dark humor characteristic of the police profession in chronicling my career through a series of humorous stories. I may write a Dark Knights Border Patrol Edition and a Police Academy Edition.

What prompted you to leave the NYC Police Dept, retiring after 20 years as Captain?
I always regarded the NYPD’s 20-year retirement as one of the most significant benefits on the job. There are not many jobs where you can leave at a young age and start drawing your pension immediately.

What do you do for the college in New York City as adjunct Professor?
I teach in the Homeland Security Department. I have taught courses in Emergency Planning, Disaster Response & Recovery, and Security Technology.
Conductor came about due to your son's career choice. Did you want him to follow in your footsteps instead?

He’s a great kid, and I wanted him to do what he was interested in. I was shocked to see the amount of training and memorization that was required to become a federally qualified conductor.
Terrorists are everywhere now. One of your books is about them in the NYC Transit System. What was your motivation behind this book?

The subway system is a target that is virtually impossible to completely protect. The open nature of the system creates vulnerability, but Americans, and New Yorkers in particular, are reluctant to relinquish freedoms in exchange for increased security.
What are working on now?

I am working on two books. I am taking my first stab at fiction with a novel that is tentatively titled THE LAST DAY. It is a police thriller about a plot to detonate a small nuclear explosive in the NYC subway. The second book is a project that is very special to me. It is a book on impaired driving. On December 19, 2011 I was driving my 21-year old daughter Meghan to school. A driver high on cocaine ran a red light at a high rate of speed and T-boned my car. I suffered a broken neck, broken back, broken ribs, broken hand, nerve damage in my left leg, and all my teeth were knocked out. But I am still here. Meghan was killed. The book is inspired by and dedicated to her.
Are there any other writers in your family history?
None
Where are your books available?
Amazon
Can readers reach you to get a signed copy of your books?
Absolutely. I’m waiting with pen in hand.
Any pets? Hobbies?
Two little dogs – Maltese and Maltipoo, and golf
Is there anything else you'd like to say to your readers/fans?

Interview with Steve Snyder, author of Shot Down
What prompted you to write Shot Down?
Growing up I knew the basics of my father’s World War II history. However, it wasn’t until I retired in 2009 that I had the time to dig deeper into my father’s war experiences to learn more. At that time, I had no intention in writing a book. I just wanted to go through and organize all the information my parents had kept from the war years.
Two items were most significant. One was a diary that my father had written while he was missing in action about his plane being shot down which was absolutely riveting. The other item was all the letters my father had written to my mother while he was stationed in England and reading them was fascinating. I became totally fascinated with the story of my father and his crew, and it became my passion.
It wasn’t until the end of 2012 that I finally decided to write a book. After all that I had learned during the previous 3 years, I came to the conclusion that the story of my father and his crew was so unique and so compelling that it had to be told and people needed to read about it.
Was there a lot of research behind the information in the book?
Yes, a great deal. I went on a quest to find relatives of my dad’s B-17 bomber crew and asked them for any information they had about “their vet”. I read book after book about the air war in Europe. I spent countless hours on the internet doing research and downloading declassified military documents.I joined numerous WW II organizations and started attending their reunions where I listened to veterans tell their stories. I even found the German Luftwaffe pilot, Hans Berger, who shot down my father’s plane and interviewed him for the book.
From the time I started my research in 2009 to the time the book was published was 4 ½ years. It took me 12 months to actually write the manuscript and another 8 months to publish it. I formed a one-person limited liability company, Sea Breeze Publishing (the street I live on) and contracted with independent professionals for all the necessary services, such as editing, graphic design, interior layout, printing and fulfillment.
However, I’m not sure I would have written the book if it were not for two Belgian gentlemen, Dr. Paul Delahaye and Jacques Lalot who were young boys during World War II. Later in life, they became local historians and interviewed Belgian citizens and members of the Underground; recording their testimony about events that took place. They provided me with a tremendous amount of detailed information that would have been lost forever without their extensive research and documentation. I owe a great debt to these two wonderful men.
How did you come about becoming the President of the 306th Bomb Group Historical Association?
My father was in the 306th Bomb Group while stationed in England during the World War II, and after I retired, I joined the Historical Association. My first reunion was in 2011, and I became a Board Member a couple years later, then Vice President. I just finished a two year term as president, but I am still on the Board of Directors as Immediate Past President. Our mission is to remember the air war over Europe, honor the men who fought it, and educate the public about it; especially younger generations.
Are you working on another book now?
No, however I’ve started working on a documentary about the story. Hopefully, it will be completed by the end of 2018.
Had you ever written anything before Shot Down?
No. I had no writing background or training at all. However, I always enjoyed writing and seemed to have a knack for it. My career profession was in sales and sales management with the last 36 years being with Vision Service Plan (VSP). Having a career in sales has helped me a great deal in marketing my book.
Are there any other writers in the family?
None
Where is Shot Down available to purchase?
Of course on Amazon and any bookstore or library can order it from wholesale book distributors Baker & Taylor or Ingram. It is also sold in the gift stores of about 20 air and war museums in the U.S. Shot Down is available in both hard and soft cover, in all eBook formats, and as an audio book on Audible, iTunes, etc. The print editions have more than 200 time period photographs of the
people who were involved and locations where the events took place. The eBook only has 24.

Do you have a website or blog?
Pets? Hobbies? Children?
We, or I should really say my wife, Glenda has a large parrot, a Macaw named Peso. I enjoy gardening and our main residence in Seal Beach, CA is a virtual botanical garden with about 75 different species of palm trees planted in the ground surrounded by all sorts of tropical plants. At our other home in Sedona, AZ, I have about 30 different species of cacti. We have three grown boys; Doug, Devin, and Clayton and one grandson Ben with another grandson due this December.
You've have several book signings and speaking engagements. Was there a lot of work involved in that?
Yes, very much so. Promoting my book is basically a full-time job. I spend hours every day doing it. I am constantly contacting organizations about making PowerPoint presentations at their events and functions. As far as just signing books without speaking, I really only do that at air shows around the country.
With an exception every now and then, I stopped signing books at bookstores and libraries because the turnouts are so low.
With an exception every now and then, I stopped signing books at bookstores and libraries because the turnouts are so low.
Shot Down has also won several National Awards. Did you use any kind of technique or strategy to enter all those contests?
Yes, about 25 since the book was released on August 15, 2014. After receiving awards in the first few contests I entered, I gained confidence and began entering everyone I came across. I figured more is always better. I’ve been very fortunate.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
At the end of World War II, there were 16 million veterans and that number has been rapidly diminishing. No other event is history affected more people than World War II. It changed the course of the United States and the world forever. The brave, young men who fought and died for freedom truly are The Greatest Generation, and their sacrifice must never be forgotten. It’s our duty to remember.
Steve Snyder graduated from UCLA with a B.A. degree in Economics and has lived in Seal Beach, California since 1972. After 36 years in national sales and sales management, he retired from Vision Service Plan (VSP) in 2009.
Soon after retirement, Steve began his quest to learn about the World War II experiences of his father, pilot Howard Snyder, and his crew of the B-17, Susan Ruth, named after his older sister. It became his passion, and after 4 1/2 years of dedicated research, resulted in his book, SHOT DOWN which has received over 25 national book awards.
One result of his new career as a World War II historian is that he is a member of numerous World War II organizations and Immediate Past President of the 306th Bomb Group Historical Association.
