Ian,

I’ve just finished your book ‘Chasing Francis’ in three days flat. I couldn’t put it down. Having grown up in Church my whole life, this spoke volumes to me in so many ways.

I found Chase Falson’s model of the Church he wants to lead moving to the point of inspiration.

‘Chasing Francis’ put in writing a lot of things I have thought about Church over the last few months and after reading your book, I feel more than ever called into action where God has put me.

Please continue to write, you have at least one person here in the U.K who will buy your books!

Comment on Thoughts on Spiritual Practices by Bill

I enjoyed the podcast and particularly your encouragement to combine the historic traditonal practices/disciplines with creative ones (like the magnifying glass). I’ve been pondering your suggestion that the Reformation (and perhaps the Enlightenment?) has led to an emphasis on disciplines/practices which seem rooted in rationality (Bible study comes to mind) and a corresponding deemphasis on those rooted in contempation of (or presence to) mystery (such as meditation). Those weren’t your words of course, but that’s how I’ve been thinking of it. I’m wondering if seeking certainty (and propositional truths) about the divine is inherently futile and maybe even counterproductive (in the sense that it may increase the apparent distance between a person and God rather than lessen it). I’m wondering if quieting oneself in the presence of the divine mystery and divine love is better. For me at least.

In any event, I enjoyed the show and hope this is a subject to which you will return.

peace

Comment on Contact by Vicky Ricks

Ian,

I bought your “Jesus, My father…” book on a sale rack because I loved the title and thought my 24 year old son would love it. I started reading it and couldn’t put it down. I have a friend who grew up in the same area and thinks her dad was CIA. I went back and bought every copy they had and am giving them for Christmas presents. I am a writer and appreciate this on so many levels…the humanity, the heart and the wonderful writing. I love what you say about your mother…and about parenting. Thank you for sharing your life with all of us.

Comment on Thoughts on Spiritual Practices by Donnie

Ian asked a question was asked about midway through the cast, “Andy, am I being too esoteric, or am I clear (regarding the spiritual disciplines, finger pointing)?” I replied with you, “I sure am enjoying the conversation. I’m not sure if anyone else is.”

Thank you, this was for a Quaker boy from Kansas.

Comment on Are You a Christian Mystic? by Ayrian Stone

Absolutely! I lost my childlike experiences of Jesus for a long season, because I categorized them as my ‘imagination.’ I didn’t know Jesus was waiting for just the right moment to step again into my life in a very real, personal way. Call it subjective experience…call it crazy. I’m just so thankful He’s real and abides in me! Thank you, Ian, for explaining Christian mysticism so beautifully.

Comment on About by Marah Jean

Peter & Ian — I read A Separate Peace in high school and now teach it to my students every year! I love how poignantly it portrays the broken nature of man, and the Christ imagery is FANTASTIC!!! This random gal from Washington recommends it too.
