I grew up going to a Lutheran church with my parents. I thought the services were boring, except for the section where the pastor deliver a short sermon. When I was in jr. hi. a friend tricked me into coming to a pentecostal church.
Somehow, between these two extremes, I came to believe that God is real. I felt most comfortable at a non denominational church, maybe because it was somewhere between the two extremes.
Now, I'm 48, have a wife and five children, and I'm disenchanted with church altogether. I became very involved in a couple of non denominational churches, even help plant two churches. I think a couple of bad apples have poisoned the entire water hole for me.
Recently, my 19-year-old son and I have attended several churches, looking for a place to start over, mostly because he really wants to. I am very interested in visiting an old-school liturgical church, but like what I'm hearing from you and other, I am sure I would find either one lacking. A combo of both sounds fantastic.
