Great & Unfortunate Desires
Victorian England c. 1870
Operating as a British spy, Tristan St. James, the new Marquis of Wrenworth, barely escapes Afghanistan with his life in the spring of 1869. He plans to seek vengeance against the traitor who exposed him and for the agent he’s forced to kill. Returning to England, as a lord, he must marry. Haunted by guilt from the horrors of war, he avoids love at all costs, but finds himself drawn to the only woman who is disinterested in him.
Lady Evelyn Hurstine has waited over two years for the return of her love, a man who left for war in the East. But during that time, she suffered a brutal assault, resulting in a child and fear of any man touching her except for the man she once knew. The pursuit by the marquis scares her but her excuses against his proposal dwindle.
Their marriage strengthens into love until she discovers her husband isn’t the safety she believed but the one who killed the man she once loved. Caught in a world of intrigue and mayhem, Tristan must prove his love to her before the traitor destroys them both.

Black Dorn is back on WIP It Up Wednesday #Wipitup

Welcome to Erotic Notions and WIP It Up Wednesday. This snippet is a continuation from my erotic medieval romance - Black Dorn. I'm back from the blog hops and last Wednesday I leant my blog to a friend who was having a cover reveal. But for the next several Wednesdays it's me and WIP It Up Wednesday.

Set Up – Branwyn's first lesson continues.
(for those who haven't started at the beginning with this – Duna means instructor –  so Duna Trea is Branwyn's instructor. A Dune is one who is to be instructed. Branwyn is a Dune. Gon means King and lastly Gon Dra means Heir to the Throne.)

Branwyn's eyes widened. She covered her gasp with her hand. "No. It would be wrong." "I thought not. Some lands lack the knowledge needed to properly train young women. Touch him. Run your fingers down his chest. Experience what a man feels likes." "But…" Touch him. Must I? He is very handsome. Strong. Maybe just a quick touch. "My herbs lulled him into a deep sleep. He may stir, but he will not fully waken." The magnificence of the man sleeping before her outweighed her fear. Branwyn wanted to touch him. Angry wounds and faded scars told stories of hard-fought battles. Solid muscles proclaimed he had won those battles. Trea knelt slipping her hand along his arm. "Feel the hardness of his body. It is one that knows how to kill men and pleasure women. Many women. And yes, women can derive great pleasure from a man. You give pleasure to them and they give it back." Following Trea's example Branwyn knelt and skimmed her fingers across his chest and down his arm. Rubbing her fingers together, she felt the oiliness of Trea’s healing pastes. Sniffing her hand, she recognized the aroma of lavender and yarrow—herbs that induced sleep and contained healing powers. She brushed back a fallen curl of thick black hair. As her nerve increased, she stroked his stomach with her full hand, watching her fingers rise and fall as they ran over the ripples. He sighed. "Now, repeat what you have done with your breasts." "Duna Trea?" Her breathing increased to near the beat of her heart. "It is not your body. Soon it will be your master’s and you must willingly touch and be touched. These repeated protests must stop. Do not argue. Tragor." Her voice rose an octave. "But this man is not my husband. It will be a sin. I must not." With closed eyes, Duna Trea rubbed her forehead and sighed. "To please your master and to be pleased in return, you must lose the thoughts that run through your head. In your land, your body was evil and the cause of sin. In our land, it is a joyous object—something to be cherished and honored in many ways. In your land, as your master’s property, you believe you must give him sons. Here, we believe you must give him pleasure and through that, the sons will arrive. If you are unacceptable he will not join you in bed." Trea wiped the oils from her hands and dropped the cloth next to her chair. "Gon-Dra Malack is not your master, but he is a man and you must learn how to touch one and pleasure one before you are given." Trea looked down at the sleeping soldier. "Trust me Branwyn, when I say there is not a finer man in this land or anywhere."

Spotlight on Bibi Paterson's erotic romance Tied To Me

Tied to You by Bibi Paterson (@BibiPaterson) Blurb:Olivia Walker has just hit rock bottom. About to lose her job and become homeless, she can’t see a way out of the mess her life has become until Alex Davenport enters her life with a proposal she is in no position to refuse. Wealthy and arrogant, Alex is used to getting whatever he wants and he has set his eyes on Olivia. For months he has watched her, waiting for the perfect opportunity to present itself to make her his, and finally it has appeared. But Alex is hiding a secret, one that he is determined to protect until, one day, Olivia makes a discovery that sets her on a course of self-discovery. Together they explore Olivia’s submissive side, pushing boundaries and taking her on the wildest ride of her life. But when Olivia’s past threatens to expose Alex’s secret lifestyle, the time for truths and full disclosure is at hand. Can Alex let go of the fears that have bound his true nature? And can a couple that fell in lust find their own happily ever after? Warning: This book is intended for mature audiences as it contains explicit sex scenes and BDSM themes.

Excerpt:“We’re leaving,” Alex states in a tone that brooks no argument. I merely nod in reply and let him lead me to the cloakroom to fetch my wrap, and then we are sitting in the car, being driven home. The tension between us is thick, yet neither of us has said a word. I glance up at Alex under my eyelashes and see his jaw clenched and an expression that I can’t fathom in his eyes. Every fibre of my being is hyper-aware of Alex’s masculinity, and a dull throb sits between my legs. I squirm in my seat, trying to find a little relief, when suddenly I am aware of Alex’s scrutiny. His eyes bore through me, yet the expression on his face remains a neutral mask. A smirk appears as he runs his eyes over my body and I find my nipples hardening under my dress. We have no sooner pulled up in front of the house than Alex is pulling me from the car and into the house. The door slams shut behind us and for a moment we both just look at each other, lost in the inevitable. And then Alex speaks. “Turn around, Olivia.” The command is issued in a low, gravelly voice, completely at odds with Alex’s regular teasing tone. The use of my full name startles me, and before I can think further, my body is already obeying. I stand still, my eyes staring up the stairs, as we stand in the frigid hallway, and I wait with bated breath. A few moments pass and all I can hear is our breathing.Suddenly I am aware of Alex’s arms coming over my shoulders and unhooking the cape at my throat. It slithers to the floor, and for a heartbeat, the world stops spinning on its axis. I shiver as I feel Alex’s warm breath on my neck as, ever so slowly, he pulls down the zip of my gown. “Put your arms out and hold on to the end of the bannister,” he instructs gruffly. I comply without rational thought, quietly awaiting his next command. The single movement has my dress pooling at my feet as I lean forward to grip the smooth wooden post. Large, agile hands skim down my sides until they rest on my hips and I am very much aware that my arse is now in the air, the angle of my body on my heels offering direct access to my damp, aching pussy. The hands follow a leisurely pace down the backs of my thighs and calves, until they reach my ankles. “Lift your foot and then the other,” Alex orders. I comply and he pulls the dress out from around my feet, discarding it in a heap by the front door.I glance back down at Alex, but immediately he notices. “Eyes forward,” he barks, and I whip my head back around, my heart thumping in my ears. The cold of the hallway has raised goose bumps over my skin and I am shivering ever so slightly. I feel Alex stand behind me, heat radiating from his frame making the cold more tolerable, and then I hear him shedding his own clothes. My body is feeling ultra-sensitive, and the moment his hand snakes around my waist and deft fingers find my clit, I let out a low groan, as the warmth starts to spread across my pelvis. His pelvis pushes into my arse and I can feel the huge length of him grinding between my butt cheeks. Suddenly, Alex’s other hand is grabbing my breast, pulling it from the confines of my strapless bra and, almost painfully, squeezing my nipple. Teeth nip at my ear and neck as he forces my head back, my back arching as I try to maintain my balance. “I don’t make love,” Alex hisses into my ear. “I fuck, I root, I shag…but I don’t do soft and I don’t do sweet. Do you understand, Olivia?” I nod my head, a thousand conflicting thoughts swirling around my head. “If you want this to stop, you need to say so now…” he trails off and waits for my answer. My brain is telling me that this is all a bit weird, that this is not what I want, but my treacherous body has other ideas and so I keep silent.

Spotlight on Tempting Will McGlashen by Liz Everly

Tempting Will McGlashen by Liz Everly (@Lizeverly1)
Blurb:
Mathilde Miller wanted to be a good daughter and marry the son of a long-time family friend, Joshua Bowman. But she didn’t want to be the wife of a Pennsylvania farmer. She loved her life, cooking on the Virginia frontier at her family’s ordinary. The minute blacksmith Will McGlashen walks into her kitchen, her restlessness focused on him. Fresh from Scotland, with a voice “like a song” and thick coppery hair, her heart belonged to him. Was it possible for the daughter of a Pennsylvania German to marry a hired man from Scotland? What did she really know about Will McGlashen and his secret past?
Will McGlashen needed to keep his own counsel. A man with a past full of violence and loss in Scotland, he was grateful for this chance to rebuild his life as a blacksmith in Virginia. He’d have to ignore the undeniable pull he felt toward his boss’s eldest daughter. When Joshua Bowman showed up and claimed her, instead of providing resolution for will, it burns like the fire he wields in his blacksmith shop. As events unfold, Will wonders if the signs she’s sending him are all in his head and prays that he has the strength not to find out.The story is set in the Virginia frontier in 1765, a time when Native Americans still lurked in the hills, bandits and robbers were handed swift justice, and enterprising men and their families attempted to live in and tame the wild western edge of the new colonies. An ordinary offering good food, a bed, and company for travelers along the way was a much welcomed respite. Mathilde and Will's story is woven into the history, adventure, and danger of the time period.

Back on Weekend Writing Warriors with A Kept Woman #8Sunday

I'm back - after being away on a couple of blog hops. This week my 8 sentence snippet for Weekend Writing Warriors is from my erotic contemporary – A Kept WomanScene Set up – Last snippet - Arianne goes up to Derek's apartment and thinks about whether she wants to agree to their deal or not. She agrees and is waiting for billionaire, Dererk, to join her in his apartment.

He stepped into the room. Staring at her shoulder length brown hair, Derek let his eyes admire Arianne. Her chocolate brown eyes looked in his with a slight embarrassed but proud aura. Her face was tense, but Derek knew her beauty would only intensify when she allowed herself to relax. His mouth yearned to taste her. To explore the sensations of kissing and being kissed by her perfect set of lips. He let his gaze rest when his visual tour reached her breasts. She'd been bold enough to tease him with a glance and the briefest of touches and his finger tip still tingled at the memory of the moment.

Genre: Romance

Release Date: October 28, 2014 (is already available for pre-order)Excerpt:
My mother was drunk in the next room when it happened twelve years ago.Now I’m sitting in a hotel that could be anywhere. I can hear the ocean lapping against the shore, and the lights of the city look like stars that hang too close to the horizon.I know I shouldn’t be here. Sitting on the firm mattress, my legs bent toward me, I lean against the headboard. I take another drink of whiskey, let the burn sink deep. I feel it in my core, tingling. My breath quickens. I want to be here.He lifts the comforter and draws me down with him, and I feel as if it’s something we’ve already done. Somewhere, sometime before, he held me this way. And I had to let go.I can hear his heart beating, my cheek pressed to his chest. I wonder how I ended up here, in the arms of a man I dreamt of before we met. His grip tightens and I feel soft kisses against my bare shoulder, his stubble scratching my skin. The warmth of his breath is welcome, somehow rejuvenating. Our lips meet and each kiss is exploratory, tender, slow—as if to make sure it’s right. I think about the hot tub six floors down. Is the water too searing? Should we get in?We stop, cuddle, then continue, and I’m too afraid to move. My heart pounds. I start to hear things in my head, familiar voices. Each taunting, jeering. You stupid slut, what makes you think you’re good enough for him? I shove them away. He kisses me again, and I invite it. Deep, passionate, frenzied—I’ve never felt anything like this before. Because I make a point to avoid it.His hands roam my body, and I respond, wanting more. Please go away, no . . . stay! He presses against me, and I want to welcome him, thrust my hips up to meet his. But suddenly I feel trapped, unable to resist. And his tongue is probing my mouth, and I’m hot, wet between my legs—Panic. Twelve years ago I was laying on a bed with a broken spring, pinned beneath a man who was laughing at me, shoving himself inside me despite my begging him to stop. He thought it was so funny, my resistance, like the way an adult cackles at a crying child after playing a cruel joke. Why did you let him do that to me, Mama? Why didn’t you stop him?Stumbling, wasted, she slammed her calloused feet against the faux wood floor and growled, “I trusted you!” Brandishing a gnarled finger, she looked at me in disgust, as if—It was all my fault.Panic. I’m back in the hotel, and I’m pressing against his chest, trying to pull away from his kisses. The surf licks the sand, warm and wet, and I can hear the syllables as they jump from the sea. You are worthless. You deserve this. To be humiliated. Scorned. Treated like dirt.“Please, please no, this is too much for me.” I manage to speak, and he stops. Am I talking to him, or the voices? I pull away, my chest aching, my heart sinking. I clutch my stomach. “It hurts.”Something tells me it’s not the whiskey; it’s the pain I bury, the grief roiling inside me. I tell him about the rape. How my mother was there. She didn’t stop it. Is that love? What is love? I suddenly wish I were six floors down, sinking in the hot tub, nothing but a shell without a soul.A while later, he asks me if I’m all right, his head on my stomach, his arm around my hip. I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m all right.A year ago I had a vision I was in a hotel room with a man, and we made passionate love for hours. Then he went to war and died, shot in the chest, fallen on a dirt road. I drag myself off the bed, capping the whiskey, listening to the voices taunt me. Don’t listen. They’re wrong. “I should go,” I tell him, but I don’t really want to. He walks me to my car and I ask him to kiss me again, make it the best I’ve ever had. And he does. Driving down the empty roads, I want to turn around and know I shouldn’t. In a hotel room, I realized my fears. Now instead of him leaving, it is I who is departing.A balmy sea breeze tousles the palm trees. And I drive on, gaze piercing the darkness, thinking of the man I dreamt about before I met him.

A brilliant spotlight on Dangerous Intent

Dangerous Intent Boxed Set
Six sit on the edge of your seat stories from some of suspenseful romances best-selling and award-winning authors...fall in love with dangerous men

Cooper’s Redemption by D'Ann Lindun
Disappear by Mary Martinez
Logan's Redemption by Cara Marsi
Nightmare in the Woods by Sue Fineman
Protecting His Wolfe by Melissa Keir
Secret Past by Anna Sugg

Cooper’s Redemption by D’Ann Lindun Blurb: Elizabeth Adams has often dreamed of being a heroine in a western film, but her job as a florist in Los Angles is a far cry from cowgirl. Her mother travels to Colorado to sell her inherited ranch…and vanishes. When local law enforcement refuses to search, Elizabeth travels to Salt Lick to find her mother. There is no proof JB Cooper murdered his neighbor, but the people of Salt Lick, Colorado, believe he killed the old man in a heated exchange over water rights. Lack of proof is the only thing keeping Cooper out of jail. When a woman goes missing and a homeless man is killed, he’s the first suspect.Although everyone, including the local sheriff, advises Elizabeth not to trust Cooper, she instinctively knows he’s no killer. The cowboy reluctantly lets the city girl inside his tough outer layer. Can they find Elizabeth’s mother in time? Or will the dark eye of suspicion on Cooper tear them apart?
Excerpt: The afternoon flew by into evening as Elizabeth busied herself studying maps of the area. Her afternoon with Cooper had shown her how big of an area in which she had to search, and despair filled her heart. The job was too big. Elizabeth shivered. The fire had died down, and she got up to go add a log to it.  Maybe a window or door was open. She knew the front door had been locked when she came in. Maybe the back door was cracked. It, too, was firmly shut. Puzzled, she checked each downstairs window. All were snugly closed. As she went upstairs, toward the room she slept in, the air grew colder. Slowly, she entered the bedroom. Every window pane had been fully raised. Cold air blew and flakes of snow covered the bed, the floor. Her own, peach-colored spread was covered by a solid inch of ice. A chill skittered down her spine, every pore seemed to constrict. Her feet felt leaden, then liquid. Her vision blurred. Was there a stranger, a killer here?  Hiding in a closet?  Lurking?  Waiting to do the same to her as he’d done to Lyle Pritchett?  With a muffled curse, Elizabeth slammed the windows shut and ran to the phone. With shaking fingers she dialed the sheriff’s office. “This is Elizabeth Adams . . . there’s been an intruder in my house. Someone’s been here.”  She could scarcely get the words out, her tongue felt too big for her mouth. Stifling a sob, she managed, “Hurry. Please. Oh, please.”“Is someone still there?” the deputy asked as calmly as if he were making a grocery list.“I don’t know. I don’t think so.”“Try to stay calm, Ma’am. Someone will be right there.”“Okay,” Elizabeth said on a shaky breath. It took her two tries to get the phone back on the receiver. Then, without thinking, she fled to the only person she could think of who would help.
D’Ann’s Bio: Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her because there's just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending. D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years and their daughter. Composites of their small farm, herd of horses, five Australian shepherds, a Queensland heeler, two ducks and cats of every shape and color often show up in her stories! D’Ann loves to hear from readers! Disappear by Mary Martinez Blurb After two years undercover as an FBI agent to infiltrate a crime organization and discover the identity of a hit man, Tyler Beckett’s cover is blown. Tyler’s new assignment is to protect the only witness who can identify the mysterious killer. If only he didn’t find her so attractive. Each day it becomes harder to keep his objective, especially since he knows the interest is mutual. Keira Cavanaugh is the only witness to a hit ordered by a crime boss. The safe house is compromised and the same hit man shoots Tyler. Fearing Tyler is dead, Keira plans revenge on the crime organization. She must fake her own suicide in order to survive. When Tyler discovers what Keira plans, he realizes he must stop her before he loses her for good.
Excerpt Keira turned in her seat to look at Tyler. His jaw tight, eyes trained on the road. They’d been traveling together long enough she’d stopped seeing the similarities between his looks and the killer’s. Now all she noticed were the dissimilarities and ever since that turning point, she’d been fighting a battle of attraction herself. For him to just climb out of the car, then the next minute declare nothing had happened, really pissed her off. Was that the only reason she was important to him, to catch Battista? Great he was the typical male, just trying to get in her panties. Now that he’d decided she was too important for that, he’d probably drop her at the safe house and go find a woman. That brought on a wave of jealousy so intense it shocked her. She’d never been a jealous person. “Where are we going?” She realized she had no idea where the safe house was. At least this was a much safer topic for her thoughts. Not watching him in her mind with some other woman locked in an embrace where she wanted to be. Jeez, she had it bad. Well she’d have to borrow a page from his book and pretend he didn’t matter. Should be easy, after all she’d just met him.“The Catskills.” She jumped and brought her attention back, she’d forgotten about the question. “Are we staying in a hotel there?”“No. A friend of mine has a place. It’s remote, in the Catskill mountains, where we won’t be bothered.”Those words gave her pause. Not because of her attraction to him, but because they wouldn’t be close to help if needed. “Anyone else know where this cabin is?”“Only the owner and she won’t tell.”She? That green monster rippled through her body again and she couldn’t hold back. “And she won’t mind you’re taking another woman there?”She turned her attention to the road, and ridiculously blinking back tears. Out of the corner of her eye, saw him briefly turn his head and glare at her. “She wants justice probably more than anyone.” He paused as if in thought. She waited for him to continue, when he didn’t she couldn’t contain her curiosity. “Why?”“She’s my cousin by marriage,” he said, and looked at her a little strange. “And the victim’s wife.”

Logan’s Redemption from Cara Marsi Blurb: He broke her heart once. Can he save her life now?Doriana Callahan's life is unraveling. Someone is stalking her and sabotaging her father's company; her teenage son is rebelling; and Logan Tanner is back in town. For sixteen years she's kept an explosive secret from Logan, a secret he soon discovers.Logan never belonged in Doriana's world, but a long time ago he allowed himself to dream of a future with her, until the awful night he was forced to run. Now he's back and he needs her forgiveness, but first he must forgive himself.Despite the fact that Doriana kept the existence of his son from him, Logan vows to protect her. He races against time to stop the culprit threatening Doriana and works to forge a bond with his son. Can the love and passion that still burn between Doriana and Logan overcome old lies and new dangers? The clock is ticking on a second chance at love.
Excerpt: Logan was at her side in an instant. He grasped her shoulders. She winced at the anger in his eyes. The twinkling lights of the tree reflected on the golden stubble of his beard, mocking the tension that arced between them like an electrical current. “I’m Josh’s father,” he rasped. “I’m not some stranger, here one day and gone the next.” “Aren’t you?” She bit down on her lip. Hurt shattered the chiseled planes of Logan’s face. She glimpsed the vulnerable young boy he’d once been, the boy she’d fallen in love with. He released her as if he couldn’t bear to touch her. Her throat thickened with tears. “So that’s it.” The quiet calmness of his voice damned her more than shouts. “I’ve never been more than a temporary diversion to you.”“That’s not true,” she whispered. “I loved you. I ....” She stopped herself before she blurted that she loved him now. “Do you really know what love is?” His gaze raked her. “You have no problem giving your body to me, but I’m not worth bothering with on any other level.”Fury and pain pierced her like a carpenter’s awl. “How dare you talk to me like that?”He released a breath. “I’m sorry. I was out of line.” Sadness creased his features. “I just want to be in my son’s life.”“How do I know you’ll be around for him?” “Trust me. Damn it, just trust me.” Could she trust him? Maybe she should ask him to stay. What if he said no? Could she take that chance? Her insides shook. “I can’t.” “You can’t trust me?” Steel hardened his voice. She shook her head. “No, that’s not it.”“Then what is it, Dorie?”Words dried in her throat. He had to want her enough to never leave again.

Nightmare in the Woods by Sue Fineman Blurb: In searching for a friend's remote cabin in the Oregon woods, Tess Dunlap gets hopelessly lost. She stops at another cabin to ask for directions and steps into a living nightmare. The crazy man who lives there believes God sent Tess to him to be his wife, and he won't let her leave. He forces her to watch violent movies with him and then emulates what he sees on the screen. When the battered and bruised woman escapes and finds her way to John Paul Thornton’s cabin, he risks his life to get her to safety. He's compassionate and funny and quickly becomes a good friend, the one person Tess feels she can rely on. Until she discovers what he does for a living. John has some serious issues of his own to confront, but there's a more urgent problem to deal with first. The crazy man hasn't given up. He's coming after Tess.
Excerpt: “Get your ass in here, Tess,” Larry called. “Bring me another beer.”She took the can into the living room of the dingy cabin and tried to retreat to the kitchen, but Larry grabbed her wrist and pulled her down beside him on the sagging sofa. His fingers dug into her already bruised flesh, but she didn’t dare try to pull away. “Watch the movie with me.”“All right.” As if she had a choice. The movie began and bloody images of a man beating and kicking another man filled the screen. She closed her eyes. Larry’s favorite movie sent cold terror skittering down her spine. He grabbed her face and squeezed. “Open your eyes, dammit. Watch the movie.”Her eyes snapped open and her heart pounded with terror. The last time Larry watched this movie, it incited him to beat her like the man on the screen beat his victim. She took a deep breath and tried to suck up her courage. She’d need it tonight. “Larry, would you like me to make you some popcorn to go with your beer?”“Okay.”She stood and he pinched her bottom, twisting his fingers to make it hurt more. As if she didn’t hurt enough already. Her eyes filled with tears from the stinging pain, but she didn’t cry out. If she did, he’d hurt her more. She had to get out of here. Now. While she could still move. If she didn’t get away from Larry tonight, she’d die in this place.Tess put the big iron skillet on the stove, turned the burner on high, and added oil and popcorn. As the popcorn sizzled, she poured oil all over the kitchen floor and backed toward the outside door, praying that the oil and flying popcorn would slow him down enough for her to get away. She opened the door, slipped out, and closed it quietly behind her. And ran for her life.

Protecting His Wolfe from Melissa Keir Blurb: Betsie Wolfe is a small-town girl who leaves her cozy little life for a job in the big city, never expecting to become a witness to a murder or face vicious threats.Detective Jonah Pigg is attracted to Betsie’s green eyes and small frame when he arrives on the scene of the murder. When the threats begin, he takes her into his home under the protection of the three Piggs who own the Pigg Detective Agency. It will take all his detective work to keep her safe from the killer.Passion has a way of igniting when people are under stressful situations, and lust leads Betsie and Jonah into each other’s arms. But is their relationship a matter of desire, or is it something more?
Excerpt: Late one October evening, after most of the staff had left, Betsie chose to get the last of the filing done before heading out, hoping to earn some bonus points from Miss Hildebrand, the imperious clerical supervisor at Anderson. After all, nobody waited at home for her.She kicked off her shoes and wiggled her toes, glad to be free of the fashionable toe-pinchers after a long day. Grabbing the stack of papers, she walked over to the tall filing cabinet. She sniffed and sneezed. “Julie must have worn the whole bottle of Chanel this morning.” Her co-worker’s “more is better” perfume policy made their close quarters trying at times. Juggling the folders in one arm, she pushed the window open for fresh air then sat on the floor to sort the files. Perhaps Mrs. Hildebrand, the old dragon who ran the secretarial pool, would appreciate her efficiency and lay off her for once.Few, if any, other staff members remained so late in the day. Only the soft hum of the fluorescent lights broke the quiet, and she was able to work quickly without all the interruptions of the business day.As she finished alphabetizing A-L, harsh voices echoed from outside, startling her.Who could that be? She crept closer to the window, but found it too high to see the people below. Perhaps she shouldn’t have stayed alone at night, no matter how it might benefit her career.“Do you have the stuff?” The voice sounded familiar. She scrunched her eyes, trying to envision the person behind the sound.“Yes, I do, but the drugs are hidden until you pay me twice the amount we agreed on.”She held her breath and crouched behind the file cabinet, afraid to make a sound. Is that Mr. Anderson? Why is my boss talking about drugs?“That’s not the way to do business. We agreed on a fee. I did the loading and driving. I had all the risk.” The rough voice took on a menacing tone with a rasp that sounded like he—and it was clearly a man— had smoked three packs of cigarettes a day for twenty years.“But it’s my company and my name on those trucks, which means I’m taking the biggest risk if we get caught moving your drugs. So the amount is double.”Betsie’s heart raced. She’d never known anyone who’d been involved in dirty business, and now she was working for one. I wish I hadn’t worked late. Her leg hurt from her cramped posture, and she rubbed her calf to try to ease the pain. Closing her eyes, she retraced in her mind the office layout and an escape route. Just in case.

Secret Past from Anna Sugg Blurb: Sarah Shapiro searches through the ruins of her grandmother’s deteriorating farmhouse and discovers a metal box and a Tommy gun buried beneath the floorboards. While trying to unravel the mystery of her grandmother’s secret past with the contents inside the box, Sarah take pleasure in the charming, flirtatious Morgan Mills, who helps her investigate the clues left behind by her grandmother. But it’s Clifford Ketchum the man with an attitude, who boils her blood and contradicts her emotional reactions with his nearness.Danger closes in on her when the Tommy gun disappears, her soon to be ex-husband is killed, and how could she possibly fall in love with a deceiving contractor, who happens to have a wife.
Excerpt: Clippard Ketchum’s dark formidable eyes glared toward her. Her shaky fingers uncurled, releasing the tension on Drake’s leash. Instantly, the dog darted toward the man. The intruder didn’t move. Drakes lowed his approach. His snarling lips lifted exposing long white fangs. The guarded dog advanced toward the man in slow cautious steps. “Sarah…”She heard a plead somewhere in the soft tone of his voice. Returning his stare, her fingers tightened around the flashlight. Breathing in the humid night air, she studied his expression. “Drake, sit,” Sarah commanded. The dog obeyed, but never took his black, warning eyes away from his target. “What are you doing here?” her unsteady voice demanded. “Noticed car lights…you know it isn’t safe this time of night.” Between tight jaws, his angry tone lowered a bit. Ketchum stared down into the dog’s wary eyes. He didn’t budge nor did the dog. Still leery, Sarah continued to shine the light in his face. She stepped toward him. “Get out of my way and quit stalking me,” she said bluntly. When his irreproachable gaze pulled from the dog to her, she stiffened. On the defense, her nerve endings fueled her body. She pressed her lips together and moved forward. “Come Drake.” Ketchum didn’t move. She glared into his black eyes. “Move,” her flat voice insisted as she pushed him against the doorframe. He raised his hand as if to grab her. She jerked back letting protective instincts take over, pumping adrenaline. Whirling, she threw her leg up and landed a foot in his gut. Drake charged. Between ferocious growls and barks, he nipped at the enemy’s ankle.

Excerpt from Fifty Shades of Green, “Seed”
The next time I saw the woman dancing naked in the garden I was prepared. I made several sketches of her that night and hung them in my studio. The following morning, a Saturday when most of my neighbors gathered to garden and gossip, I passed around a sketch of just her face. No one recognized the woman and I returned home to work on the cover of an urban fantasy about werewolves in Wichita. That afternoon, when I took a break from my work, Henry joined me on the porch. I showed him all of my sketches of the naked dancer. “You know her?”Just as the other neighbors had denied knowing the woman, he too denied knowing her, but after he stared at the sketches a bit longer, he looked at me. “She dances in the garden?”I told him she did.“And you’re the only one who sees her?”“Seems that way.”He cocked his head to the side and stared at me for so long I thought he’d drifted away. “She’s chosen you.”He wouldn’t answer any more of my questions and I finally stopped asking. Whatever Henry thought he knew he wasn’t prepared to share.

I sat up late every night after that, propped up on the window seat in my bedroom where I could watch the community garden from the second floor. When the dancing woman finally returned, I slipped out of my house wearing only cut-offs and a T-shirt, and I crossed the yard to the garden. When the naked woman saw me standing at one end of the central path, she stopped dancing.“Who are you?” I asked. “Why are you here?”She touched her finger to her lips, silencing me. She stepped lightly down the path until she stood less than a foot from me. She took my hand, lifted it to her lips, and kissed my palm. Then she placed my hand on her breast, the damp spot in the center of my palm pressing against her tightening nipple. Her full breast was soft yet firm, and I reached out to take her other breast in my other hand. She wrapped her hands around the back of my neck and pulled me close enough to cover my lips with hers and slip her tongue into my mouth. She tasted of cucumbers and tomatoes and bell peppers and sweet onions.
