Publisher Experiments I’d Like to See
In the past two weeks, we’ve seen two publishers engage in some experimental changes in the way they sell digital books. Sourcebooks launched a DRM free subscription site and TOR/FORGE announced it would be selling DRM free digital books beginning this summer. Traditional publishers have been quietly moving toward digital first programs for a couple of years beginning with Harlequin’s launch of Carina Press, a digital first, DRM free romance book publisher. These days, particularly in the rom...

Recommended Reads Saturday: Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison
I am recommending this book because I am recommending this book because it is the start of a very enjoyable series. I discovered it when I was released last year and have subsequently pushed it on my entire family. It has magic, paranormal creatures, intrigue, paranormal politics which are really messy, an unlikely heroine. It was a lot of f...
REVIEW: The Witness by Nora Roberts
Dear Ms. Roberts:
I’ve always been a fan of the single title romantic suspense books you’ve written over the straight contemporaries which is probably why some of the J.D. Robb books are my favorite in the JD Robb/Nora Roberts bibliography. In this 200th book you’ve published, you display exactly why you’ve managed to capture reader’s attentions for over three decades.

Duncan Sinclair hadn’t come to the Haven for the fires, but they were on his mind as he beached his sea-kat in a small cove just beyond the port. They were on his mind as he breathed in the Mainland smell that rose to...

Friday Midday Links: Kindle Fire Driving Down Sales of eInk Devices
Some people have argued (Micah Bowers of Bluefire for example) that dedicated devices will go the way of the dodo bird and I’ve always disagreed. Seeing the rise of the affordable Kindle Fire, however, is making me wonder if Micah Bowers et al is correct.
E Ink Holdings reports first loss in 10 quarters | The Verge – “E Ink, the company behind the e-paper display in your Kindle and Nook, is reporting a loss of NT$787 million (around $27 million) in Q1 2012, with net sales falling 53 percent on...
Reading List by Dabney for the last couple of weeks
The Seduction of Lady X by Julia London
I had such high hopes for this book, the last in a series of three. I liked the first book, The Year of Living Scandalously, and I loved The Revenge of Lord Eberlin. I hated this book. It was unrelentingly sad, the heroine is abused and raped by her alcoholic husband, she loves a man she just can’t have. Furthermore, the series has revolved around the fate of a set of missing rubies and the resolution of that plot is little more than a disappointing afte...

Soooo, after laughing my way through the first book of this series, I strapped on my big-girl undies for Book 2:
Jacob McCoy wishes for a wife and a family. Tis the Season for miracles when a young woman shows up on his doorstep: homeless, in danger and expecting...
Friday Film Review: Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Grade: C
[image error]This is a movie I wanted to love, yearned to love, and hoped to love. Unfortunately, I didn’t. First, some background. Back around 2003, a friend of mine who lived in Berkshire at the time, told me about a wonderful bookstore she found in London called Persephone Books. After checking out their website, I asked my friend to get a few books for me, one of which was “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.” I first read it in 2004 and a...

REVIEW: The Origin by Wilette Youkey
Dear Ms Youkey,
The promotional information for your self-published, professionally-edited novel, The Origin, listed several ingredients I like. It’s a superhero-themed romantic Urban Fantasy, which seemed like it would be a refreshing change from the usual vampires, werewolves, demons, etc. that dominate the subgenre. Plus, it looked to have one of my favorite character types in all of fiction: The Morally Ambiguous Hero.

Thursday Midday Links: Female Writer Moves to Pen Name to Appeal to Men
Scots crime writer Shona MacLean ‘killed off’ to appeal to men – Scotland – Scotsman.com – “SCOTTISH crime writer Shona MacLean has been forced to change her name – to S G MacLean – to make her novels more appealing to men. The change follows the publication of three successful historical crime books under her full name. The title of her latest novel has also been truncated in its paperback form, to make it more punchy and eye-catching.”Scotsman
Men won’t read women writers but are apparently...
