If You Like Books About Characters with Disabilities

Ridley offered to write up this list of books which she feels are a) good and b) portray people with disabilities inoffensively. You can find Ridley on Twitter (@_Ridley_), Goodreads and her tumblr blog.

As someone who uses a power wheelchair due to a neuromuscular disease, I have a personal interest in how authors use disability themes in their books. Over the past couple years I’ve read dozens of romances where one or both of the protagonists lives with some sort of disability. Unfortunate...

REVIEW: The Long Shot by Ellen Hartman

Dear Ms. Hartman:

Within the space of about 20 minutes, I received two emails from disparate parties telling me I must read this book. I toddled off and did what I was instructed. There were parts of the story that I loved but parts that frustrated me a great deal and so while I can see the charm of the story, some of it remains overshadowed.

REVIEW: The Lady’s Scandalous Night by Jeannie Lin

“Tang Dynasty China, 759 A.D.

Yao Ru Jiang, known as River, has woven many romantic dreams of honorable swordsman Wei Chen from her brother’s stories. Their meeting should have been a happy event; instead, Chen arrives to tell River he is duty bound to kill her brother for rebelling against the warlord they both serve.

River would do anything to distract the handsome, conflicted warrior from his mission—even take him as a lover….”

Dear Ms. Lin,

Though it’s an offshoot of “The Dragon and the Pearl...

Last week, LauraHazard Owen of Paid Content tabulated that about 500,000 digital copies of Harry Potter have been sold since their release on March 27, 2012. Harry Potter series have reportedly sold 450 million copies in print. Despite those record breaking print sales prior to the official digital release and that there were illegal digital versions have been available for years, print sales have actually increased since the release of the official digital versions. Say...

Recommended Reads Saturday: Beloved Vampire by Joey W. Hill

Beloved Vampire by Joey W. Hill is recommended by Jennifer B. I’m @DataDiva and a diehard romance fan. Happy to see erotica get some love with 50 Shades in the news but I know there are better books out there.

I am recommending this book because some books you read and you’re done. Others become a part of you in such a way they feel like a memory. Beloved Vampire is a stunning, compelling novel that deserves to be a part of vampire lore as well as a staple of the required reading list for any...

REVIEW: Coming Up for Air by Karen Foley

Dear Ms. Foley:

I wished I had liked this book more because it was fairly non offensive with likable characters but it read underwhelming to me primarily because most of the story felt forced.

[image error]Jenna is a Blackhawk pilot who has made a vow to never get involved with another pilot. One night she hooks up with a major from a bar frequented by people who lived and worked on the nearby Fort Bragg base. She believes him to be Chase Rawlins, a special forces guy, about to be deployed. In other words,...

Jared lowered his suitcase, grimacing when it scraped the marble foyer. He paused. Had Mona heard him sneaking in? All remained quiet in the spacious apartment, so he let go the breath he’d been holding.

REVIEW: Beguiling the Beauty by Sherry Thomas

Dear Ms. Thomas:

I have the same problem reviewing you as I do Courtney Milan. As in, do I really have the temerity to criticize such an amazing writer? Apparently the answer is yes because while Beguiling the Beauty was beautifully written, I wasn’t feeling the romance. This may be an “it’s not you, it’s me not liking the masquerade trope thing” but at the end of the book, I hadn’t been convinced of the HEA.

REVIEW: Her Magic Touch by Sable Hunter

At the end of the Hell Yeah! Book 2 review, I mentioned that a few glimpses of the main characters of Book 3 made me cautiously optimistic that we would finally get a grown-up female worthy of being called a “heroine.”

I was wrong. So very, very wrong.

I also bitched and whined about the misogyny in the previous book, but Oh. Dear. God.

This was worse.

Therefore, I’m subtitling this review:

Continuing Adventures In Epic Assholery And Virgin Sacrifice: A Misogyny Manifesto

NOTE: For the purposes of...

News

Kati D of Katidom has been blogging for five years. By herself! She got a little worn down putting out new content everyday and was considering shuttering her blog. But losing a voice like Kati’s would be a real loss for the romance community so while Kati recharges her batteries, she is going to be part of the Dear Author review community. Kati’s contributions here means we can add an additional review each week so now we will have two reviews every weekday and one review on Saturday and...
