REVIEW: Amazing Grace by Eve Gaddy

“It’s a match made in Heaven with the Sheriff from Hell–Hell, Texas, that is. Grace O’Malley is the sheriff of Bandido County in southwest Texas. Posing as an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) investigator, Max Ridell is an undercover Texas Ranger, looking to bust an illegal-alien smuggling ring, and the Sheriff’s office is high on the list of suspects. Max can’t reconcile the honest, hardworking Grace with a smuggler of illegal aliens, nor can he ignore his immediate attraction to her. A...

Free Riding, Free Expression, and Familiarity in Genre Fiction

My first post in this series on free speech issues focused on the line between fully protected critical speech and less protected commercial speech, specifically in regard to paid-for positive and sockpuppeted reviews. This post is on the economic concept of free riding and its substantial but often silent impact on intellectual property issues. If it seems like we’re backing up to the First Amendment and core protected speech, we are, in fact, taking the scenic back roads so that we can visi...

Tuesday links: The Rise of Gonorrhea; the fall of book covers (aka digital killing everything good in literature)

Fanfiction – Deb sent me a link to this video. It’s a rather fun look at fan fiction including a historical aspect. Did you know that someone published a sequel to Don Quixote? Unauthorized?Know Your Meme

Hold the front page: cover art is going out of fashion – James Bridle suggests that ereaders have no use for cover illustrations and thus cover art may be entirely obsolete. I’m a little befuddled by this as covers are as important today in a digital world as they are in a paper world. They...

Daily Deals: Betrayed by Shadows by Nancy Gideon

[image error] Betrayed by Shadows by Nancy Gideon. $1.99.

From Jacket Copy:

This is a pre order and from my Googling, it appears to be a full sized book and not a novella. At least this link says it is 400 pages long.

Unfortunately, none of the links actually tell us what this book is about. Not even Ms. Gideon’s website reveals this. So it’s like a surprise grab bag? 400 pages of something?

Amazon BN Sony Kobo ARE

REVIEW: An Illicit Temptation by Jeannie Lin

Dear Ms. Lin,

I’ve read several of your other books and enjoyed them—I liked your novella “Capturing the Silken Thief” (reviewedhere). I also liked “An Illicit Temptation” but didn’t love it—it felt incomplete to me. I bet, however, if I’d read the companion novel, My Fair Concubine (reviewed here), I would have appreciated your novella more. Jayne did read My Fair Concubine and shared her perspective on “An Illicit Temptation.”

REVIEW: Starved for Love by Annie Nicholas

Dear Ms. Nichols:

I found this book to be a curious thing and one that I would love for others to read so that I could discuss it with them. Pia Blyton is a succubus but one with an aversion to hookups and one night stands. Because of this, Pia is often a hungry succubus because succubi eat through the acquisition of orgasms. They also feed others, like incubi, by basically regurgitating the energy absorbed through their orgasms into little vials. (This, of course, reminded me of wolves and ho...

Monday News: Penis news and author revisions

Tipster: ‘Plagiarism had almost made it to the final print’ of Chris Anderson’s new book– The review copy of Chris Anderson’s Book “Makers” had long passages copied word for word from an article by Erin Biba originally published in Wired in September 2011. The passages were removed from the final copy. Obviously the inclusion of this would have been plagiarism and the question is who included that work in the book? Sarah Weinman tweeted that the publisher calls any plagiarism accusations “bas...

Open Thread for Authors (Author Promo) for October 2012

Welcome to the Promotional Thread for Authors. What’s this you say? I read quite a few blogs outside the romance blogosphere and many of the big ones have a daily open thread where the commenters drive the bus.

The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of February would be a March release)

You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about your book...
