REVIEW: The Dark Glamour by Gabriella Pierce

Dear Ms. Pierce,

I read your first novel, 666 Park Avenue, earlier this year. In it, readers were introduced to architect Jane Boyle who gets swept up in a whirlwind romance with the man of her dreams, only to discover that not only does she come from a long line of witches, she just married into another family of witches that covets her power. The Dark Glamour picks up where the previous novel left off, with Jane on the run from the Doran family.

What Jia's Been Reading, Late August/Early September

Reading slowed down a lot these past few weeks, but I did manage to finish 2 YAs, an urban fantasy, and a paranormal contemporary.

The Dark Glamour by Gabriella Pierce. This is the follow-up to 666 Park Avenue, which I read for review earlier this year. About families of witches in NYC high society. An easy, if shallow, read, though I wish it'd just get on already with the main show. I realize that'd defeat the point of a series where the climactic battle is saved for the final installment...

REVIEW: Falling Hard by J. K. Coi

Dear Ms. Coi:

I've been interested in reading your work since I selected your short, Caged, to appear in the Agony / Ecstasy anthology. I tried one of your previous works (the name of which escapes me) and it didn't work for me. I can't remember the title or if I even finished it so unfortunately I can't help the readership out here. "Falling Hard" did work, with some provisos. I found the paranormal world to be slightly different than ones I had read in the past.

REVIEW: Haunting Miss Trentwood by Belinda Kroll

Dear Ms. Kroll,

I was intrigued by the opening paragraph of Haunting Miss Trentwood. It was different, unusual and original. It evoked a gothic atmosphere which is not something I encounter much these days in romance, and I do so love a good gothic. I was looking forward to reading and reviewing this self-published book. Unfortunately, the bulk of the story did not live up to its opening passages.

What Sunita is reading, for the week ending September 11

I read a bunch of novellas and short-ish stories this week, as well as returning to a novel I'd laid aside for a while. Mostly m/m with one m/f, and a number of new-to-me authors.

The Seventh Veil (The Etsey Series, #1), by Heidi Cullinan

I began this back in the spring and had a difficult time getting into it. Then I restarted it and suddenly it clicked. This is a big, ambitious, densely plotted and written novel, and very unlike the other Cullinan novels I've read. It features m/m and m/f...

REVIEW: Sea Change by Darlene Marshall

Dear Ms. Marshall,

Hello down there in hot, steamy Florida. Lots of authors might choose various contemporary locations in that state for their books but I love that you've staked out early 19th century Florida and sea captains, privateers and pirates for yours. Then you smooth on a layer of Yanks vs the Brits to really spice things up. We weren't quite in the same league with the British yet but with the Baltimore built schooner that Captain David Fletcher sails so successfully, we were on...

Dear Bitches, Smart Authors Podcast: September 14, 2011 : Backlist and Old Skool Romance

It's podcast time! This week, we're talking about old skool romances, digital backlists and the prices we are willing to pay. We also talk about how readers value books, and the possibilities of collectible books.  The audio on my part is really poor and I apologize about that. This time I was somewhere different and my mic was rubbing against my sweater, I think.  Sarah did her best to eliminate the extra noise.  If you can, don't use headphones. I promise that the audio will be better next ...

REVIEW: Must Love Lycans by Michele Bardsley

Dear Ms. Bardsley,

About 1/3 of the way through this book, I realized I'd read another in the Broken Heart series. I think it was Cross Your Heart; I remember something about a ghost and some sort of evil. That was the only book I'd ever picked up in the series, and it was amusing but didn't push me to jump on another series wagon. I have to admit, I pulled Must Love Lycans off the TBR stack because I liked the fact that Damian (the hero) shows up naked. Yeah, I needed a thrill while on our...
