Lazaraspaste's Best of 2011

This year was a bit of a crap year for me. I actually haven't read all that much—at least in so far as romance is concerned. Between the final semester of school, exams, work and the most severe case of reading burnout I have ever had in my life, I honestly wondered if there would be anything on this list! A few of these are re-releases of older books, mostly in ebook format.  But for the most part, these books were published in 2011. I'm surprised that the list numbers the fingers on my...

News

The Kindle App for iOS has been updated so that you can now email yourself documents (mobi, pdf, word) and read those files on your Kindle App. This feature used to be only for Kindle device owners and it is one of my favorite features offered by Amazon. Amazon gives you an email address which you can edit. Then you email documents to that address. I like to change it to make it easy for me to recall like jane.fire@kindle.com or jane.iphone@kindle.com.

All the personal documents you send a...

REVIEW: Once Upon a Winter's Eve by Tessa Dare

Dear Ms. Dare,

In the usual way of things, I am not a fan of the novella. Neither am I quite keen on the short story. I find both lacking in character, particularly in romance where that is the key to any relationship development. Neither the novella nor the short story offers an adequate length for the development of either of those two central aspects, in my experience. Or it does so rarely enough that I have come to view the novella with leery and suspicious gazes, especial those that are o...

Jayne's Best of 2011 List

Even though I'm using the Top Ten Lists tag, this year in checking over my notes, I see I have a lot of B grade books but not as many B+ or A range books of those I read that were published in 2011. Since I want the books on my list to be ones that stand out, this is going to be a shorter list from me this year. In alphabetical order by author:

Swept Off Her Feet by Hester Browne (review)Honey Grove by Genell Dellin (review)Heart Strings and Diamond Rings by Jane Graves (review)Sea Change...

Interview & Giveaway: Patricia Gaffney, Putting Characters Through the Wringer for Your Reading Pleasure

Jennie and I are the original Patricia Gaffney fangirls. Back in 1997, I read my first Gaffney, the brilliant and controversial To Have and to Hold, and proceeded to write its author an embarrassingly long and gushy fan letter. Around about 2001, we were reprimanded for discussing her books too much on the AAR boards. And, I'm not sure I should be relating this — Jennie stop me if I shouldn't — but in those days, Jennie was fond of referring to Ms. Gaffney (along with Laura Kinsale and...

REVIEW: You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon

Dear Ms. Fallon:

[image error]I am a romance reader and rarely read non fiction. While this collection of stories are fictional, they are loosely based on men and women that live in military bases probably across the world. I don't doubt that these stories have been replayed a thousand times in the real lives of individuals who have sacrificed these last nine years during the war. And for every man who is putting himself on the line, there is a family back home that is struggling to keep things together.

Th...

REVIEW: Busted in Bollywood by Nicola Marsh

Dear Ms. Marsh,

[image error]I am always on the lookout for India-set and India-related historical and contemporary romances, so when I saw your new contemporary was forthcoming from Entangled Publishing, I was intrigued. You've written a number of well-received category romances at Harlequin, so although Entangled is a new press, you are a proven author. But while there were aspects of the book I really enjoyed, in the end this was a frustrating read for me.

The story revolves around two Indian-American...

John's Best of 2011 List

This list encompasses the best books that I read this year.  All books were published in 2011.  This list is by no means complete (as there are many books published in this year that I have not read) or calculated – these are simply just books that, on reflection, are the most memorable and well done in my reading experience this year.

You Are My Only by Beth Kephart (review)Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison (review)Wither by Lauren DeStefano (review)Divergent by Veronica Roth (review)The Girl of...

Tuesday Midday Links: Good YA Deals

Abritrator rejects argument by authors published by Regnery as having fiduciary relationship.  "the relationship between publisher and author is fundamentally adversarial, not fiduciary in nature."  If that is so, how can fiduciaries aka agents be in an adversarial relationship with their clients aka authors?

India romance readers want realism not exotic locales says this article.

Harlequin Mills and Boon, for instance, came up with an Indian author's book last year and the latest to join...
