Legacy

I've some to the conclusion that I am just picking at nothing. I keep reading back over it and just making minor rearangements. I'm not 100% happy with the first chapter, but I know once the critiuqe is done, it will open a flood gate of new thought processes. It truely does come down to, not seeing the forest beyond the trees, and my editor is a great park ranger.

zom·bie noun/ˈzämbē/

zom·bie

noun /ˈzämbē/
zombies, plural1. Originally, a snake-deity of or deriving from West Africa and Haiti. 2. A soulless corpse said to be revived by witchcraft, esp. in certain African and Caribbean religions. 3. A person who is or appears lifeless, apathetic, or completely unresponsive to their surroundings. 4. A computer controlled by a hacker without the owner's knowledge, which is made to send large quantities of data to a website, making it inaccessible to other users. 5. A tall mixed drink consisting of several kinds of rum, liqueur, and fruit juice.
With so many definitions, I think I will pick number 2 to explore further. I find it funny as I search the Internet, that the definitions do not include any type of virus. No virus, radiation waves, or food poisoning. Just good old fashion witchcraft.
The zombie concept was an element of the Haitian African-American religion known as Vodou (or Voodoo). The term zombie is used to describe a deceased individual who is revived and has their every action governed by a bokor (or sorcerer). The reanimated person is thought to have no will of its own, and is said to remain in a 'zombie-like' state. It is believed that the bokor captures and stores the victims soul (or zombi astral) in a jar or bottle, which can be either be used to strengthen their powers or sold on to clients as a good luck charm.
This original description is a far cry from what movies and books depict them as. And wouldn't this take zombies back further into time?
Necromancy /ˈnɛkrɵmænsi/ is a form of magic in which the practitioner seeks to summon the spirit of a deceased person, either as an apparition or ghost, or to raise them bodily, for the purpose of divination. In Renaissance magic, necromancy was classified as a forbidden art. Early necromancy is likely related to shamanism, which calls upon spirits such as the ghosts of ancestors. Classical necromancers addressed the dead in "a mixture of high-pitch squeaking and low droning", comparable to the trance-state mutterings of shamans.

With each passage I find about these soulless creatures I find one thing in common. A puppet master. But the movies that we see today have done away with this controller. Why? Because it terrifies people not to have control of a situation. That is the primal fear in us all. Think. Vampires and mind control, werewolves and strength, zombies and numbers. They all boil down to an uncontrollable situation. Something that is unstoppable and unrelenting.

The thing that I find strange in all of this, I dream of zombies often. I talk to them and they respond as if they are normal human beings. The situation is always out of control and they will attack people, but never me. I am usually trying to herd people that I know to safety because I know that if they are with me the zombies will not attack them. I had someone ask me once, "In your dreams, when they talk to you, and they take you as one of their own, do you feel like their queen?" I laughed and responded. "No, but I do feel like I'm one of them."

So who would be my puppet master?

On the topic of vampires...Fright Night remake.

If you are as old as I am, or older, you probably remember a movie called Fright Night (1985).

[image error] When I was a kid, this movie terrified me. These are the vampires that I grew up with. Unrelenting, uncaring, unstoppable monsters. As I was browsing for information about Underworld 4(Yes there will be another), I found that there is a remake of this movie coming out this year.

I do not re watch the films that scared me as a kid. I find that as a adult, the movies that terrified me then, are really lame now. I will not re watch Fright Night (1985), because I want to keep that old feeling of - This movie was scary as hell.

Remakes. Nothing is as good as the original. That is just my opinion. Once I say that, everyone usually start spouting out remakes. Don't get me wrong, they usual are good, having new technology for special effects, but I like to think about what they had to work with back then. Now compare what they did then with so very little. They kicked some ass back then. Today they would upload it all in a computer and someone would pound away at some keys and ta-da, it would be done. Back then, someone had to sit in a chair and have pounds of make up applied to their face, then act out a scene over and over till they got it right. I prefer for less is better.

The vampires of Fright Night were like the title stated. They were freaking frightening. Scary monsters that cared for no one but themselves. My kind of vampires. I have been reading 13 bullets by David Wellington, it is the first book of a vampire series. I was only into the first few chapters when I stopped, looked at my husband and said, "You would love these vampires. They are heartless, cold, ripping people up, unstoppable monsters." He asked. "Like 30 Days of Night?" I replied. "Exactly."

These are the vampires that I love. Unstoppable monsters that are made from pure evil. When I tell people that, they ask why I didn't write my novel with vampires like that? Think about it for a second. Whenever there are these unholy monsters, who's side is the story on. Yeah, the guy who is trying to stop them. That's not the side I want to be on. They say, then you could have made Verloren like this, and wrote a different type of story. The problem of writing a story from pure evils point of view, is that pure evil only thinks of one thing...pure evil. It would be a pointless storyline of slashing and dashing. Sure we could have them running from pursuers, but eventually one of them will have to die. You know I can't allow my monsters to die. So then what happens, the world is over run with vampires, Daybreakers. What happens to the storyline there? Still trying to get rid of the evil, and they will have to succeed to make it a story, and....I can't allow my monsters to die.

In the end, to make a vampire the unstoppable force of nature that he is suppose to be, the story has to have resolution. Hmmm...it could be a one time deal though. One story with no resolution. The world over run with evil. How would that play out?

Insidious = Awesome

I haven't went to the theater and actually liked a movie since Daybreakers. I loved this. It had that old school, try to make you jump feel. I don't imagine you will get the same experience once it goes to DVD.

There are 14 days left to sign up for the autographed book giveaway. If you have an account with Goodreads, head on over and get signed up. I have had a few more reviews trickle in and a few more request to do reviews. So far on the few sites that I have been checking the rating has stayed above 4 stars. I am blown away people. I was only hoping to keep my head above water at a three. I found that most people are happy with the way that I portray the vampires. I think that most people are through with the delicate, human loving, creatures that they have grown to be over the last few years. People are ready for the creepy underground of ruthless monsters again. And that makes me happy.

Verloren is going across the pond.

I mailed out two hard copies for reviews. One copy went to a site that I have been patiently waiting for a response. There is still no guarantee that they will review Endlessly, it only means that they want to take a better look at the story. Here is the site for all of the Indie lovers. http://llbookreview.com/

The other skipped across the pond to my delight. For those who have read the book, Verloren is only a few hours from the boarder of his native land. If you would like to check out the blog of this reviewer, here is the link. http://booklog.eternalised.net/

Some bloggers have agreed to take a look at my work. Like before, I'm not certain that they will do a review, but I can hope. Here are the links to the blogs. http://blacklagoonreviews.blogspot.com/ and http://bookhimdanno.blogspot.com/

Also, two authors, from my previous reviews, have agreed to read and post feedback on Amazon, Goodreads and B&N.

My hopes are that these will at least turn some heads. If I can just pass the information along so that people have a chance to look at the synopsis, I might get some readers.

A scrapbook of insparation.

I was digging through some photos today, and I came across two that I linger on when I see them. They are from a trip that I took to Washington last year in May. I can't help but stare at them and get lost in thought. When I went on that trip, I went alone, and that is when I fell in love with the Olympic Peninsula.

For those who have read Endlessly, you now know why I chose it for the back drop to Legacy. People that know me, and about my trip could have seen it coming a mile away. I think I made it quite clear, once back in Ohio, that I would live in Washington one day.

I made a second trip in October and drug my husband along. I wanted him to see what I saw, and fall in love with it the way that I did. Now it has only been six months and I want to visit again. It's like a drug, I can't give it up and I don't want to.

I look at these pictures and I am there. I can smell the wood and damp earth of the forest. I can hear and smell the sea. I remember the wind off the ocean and I want to be there. My soul longs to live there, and I have made a pact with myself, that one day I will.

Book review - Brash: The many lives of Salem and Lezlie

Brash: The many lives of Salem and Lezlie Brash: The many lives of Salem and Lezlie by Daniel Spritka and Devon Jackson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Salem has a thirst for adventure that appears to be insatiable and, when coupled with his fearless zeal for the unknown, he catches the attention of various government organizations, one of whom provides him the dangerous and exciting lifestyle he craves. When he meets Lezlie, he immediately realizes he has found the perfect partner. She has a deep-seated thirst for revenge that Salem manages to provide opportunity for while also giving her life a purpose for which she has the necessary skills. The two of them join forces to create one of the deadliest killing duos ever recruited by the government. When an assassination in Russia fails, they find themselves fighting for their lives. The mixed story lines of trust and vengeance make for a rapid-fire thrill read that will leave the reader wanting more. Visit the authors and watch the book trailer at: http://www.salemandlezlie.com/
REVIEWBrash is James Bond with an attitude, a twisted sense of humor, and chip on his shoulder. This book was not my normal read, but in my tradition of Monsters, Madness, Mayhem and Murder, this book had the last two and a little bit of madness mixed in. The action kept me interested, but it seemed rushed on the revenge. I prefer my revenge slow and agonizing (evil grin). It was a refreshing change in my reading line up.
