BizarroCon 2012
BizzarroCon 2012
http://bizarrocon.wordpress.com/
It's official. I'll be there November 15th - 18th. I'm not sure what I'll be doing... probably just being a creep. I'm sure to be a pest and feel some clavicles. Maybe talk to some strangers about aardvarks. Who knows! If you're going feel free to stalk me, or just stand beside me. You can saturate yourself in my creepiness.

Book Review: On The Bayou by Sean Patrick Bridges
[image error]
Sean Patrick Bridges shows us how actions should be written – with the enthusiasm of a movie script. Suspense and action take front stage in On The Bayou.
Special agent, Jennifer Nash, is given a second chance by being put in charge of a simple operation. She is joined by a small team of police officers to take down a small meth lab in the swamps of Louisiana. When things go wrong for her and her crew, they find themselves struggling to survive through the night. The team not only battles the ever hungry alligators that inhabit the swamp, but also a tight-knit community of religious followers and a slew of drug lords.
Just when you think things can’t get any worse for the team the reader finds out betrayal runs deep when survival is at stake.
On The Bayou wasn’t a typical read for me. I had read Mr. Bridges previous book, Roll Of The Die, liked it a lot, and thought I would give this one a shot. This story is heftier than Mr. Bridges previous. It moved a slower through the beginning, giving you the background of Jennifer and her counter parts she would soon be up against.
The author does a great job of creating characters you love to hate. You know… the one guy in the group you can’t wait to be killed because he’s such a jerk. This is packed with great action sequences and I think would do great on a movie screen.

Pictures and video from Horrorfind 2012
[image error]
I arrived Friday night at Horrorfind 2012 and started it off right.
The next morning I decided to run away and join the circus.

[image error] The Ghost Busters stopped buy and failed at trapping all the monsters flooding our hotel. [image error] They may have been a lot of deaths from the night before. I'm not real sure. There was a fleet of hearses in the parking lot. [image error]
[image error] Pogo The Rapist Clown stopped by and gave Andersen Prunty his business card. Note below he also offers parties and magic tricks. [image error] I attended an underground reading with Greg Hall, Nick Cato, and Andersen Prunty. [image error] The Ghost Busters failed to capture all the free roaming demons during the convention. [image error] We left a complaint note for housekeeping when we checked out. [image error] And here is a video of Andersen Prunty reading from Fill The Grand Canyon And Live Forever... one of my favorites from this year so far.(Link for those unable to view http://youtu.be/TuQmZMgGAtQ )

Heartless
It's been a while since I've thrown any movies in the review mix. This isn't really a review, but a movie I really like most people haven't heard of. This movie was recommended to me after a friend read my novella, Danse Macabre. Another friend of mine recently purchased it after I told him how much I enjoyed it and we watched it together. My tastes in movies isn't normal. For one, I absolutely hate CGI, and although it's sprinkled throughout Heartless, it's tolerable.
I obtained the description below from IMDb's website but it doesn't do the film justice at all. The main character, Jamie, has a large birthmark covering part of his face (sounds familiar, right?) and pines for a normal life. A strange encounter with inhuman beings and the death of some loved-ones leads Jamie to a man with a deal hard to refuse.
The number one complaint I hear from friends when they finally sit down to watch this is WTF? I have to admit, halfway through the movie this get really bizarre, but don't give up. Most people quit paying attention to it or quit watching because it gets too weird, but you will be rewarded if you stick it out all the way to the end.

Jamie Morgan, a young man with a large heart-shaped birthmark on his face, discovers that there are demons on the streets of East London.

Oh the horror!
Horror by C.V. Hunt
Quiet monsters liveand silent voices speak upwhere fiction roams free.
---
There’s a place where monsters are welcome. They flock to a familiar stomping ground every year and this year I will be among them. August 31 thru September 2 is Horrorfind Weekend 14 and it’s located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I’ll be wondering around, blinded by the beauty of horror, on Saturday. If you happen attend, and recognize me (I’m sure you won’t), feel free to strike up a conversation. Just remember, I have a top secret reading to attend at 6pm and the costume contest starts at 8:30pm. Find out more here http://www.horrorfindweekend.com/

Book Review: Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite
[image error]
To serial slayer Andrew Compton, murder is an art, the most intimate art. After feigning his own death to escape from prison, Compton makes his way to the United States with the sole ambition of bringing his "art" to new heights. Tortured by his own perverse desires, and drawn to possess and destroy young boys, Compton inadvertently joins forces with Jay Byrne, a dissolute playboy who has pushed his "art" to limits even Compton hadn't previously imagined. Together, Compton and Byrne set their sights on an exquisite young Vietnamese-American runaway, Tran, whom they deem to be the perfect victim.
Swiftly moving from the grimy streets of London's Piccadilly Circus to the decadence of the New Orleans French Quarter, and punctuated by rants from radio talk show host Lush Rimbaud, a.k.a. Luke Ransom, Tran's ex-lover, who is dying of AIDS and who intends to wreak ultimate havoc before leaving this world, Exquisite Corpse unfolds into a labyrinth of murder and love. Ultimately all four characters converge on a singular bloody night after which their lives will be irrevocably changed — or terminated.
[image error] 4 out of 5REVIEW:
Many of the references to music, clothing, and lifestyle are dated but this book grasped my attention anyway. Maybe it shows my age to have remember some of it, but the author has a great way of grabbing you in the details of gore. Another win for horror.

Book Review: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
[image error]
5 out of 5This is an overall rating for the series. When I first started the books I was hesitant to fall into them, but as a writer I'm always curious to find out what readers are interested in, so I pursued the whole series. I think it took me a while to soften up to these, but after finishing the last one, I really like this trilogy. Big recommendations from me.

Book Review: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I liked the sequel better than the first book. The uprising and the actual emotional motivation is added to this book. My only complaint going into the second is the constant state of complete obliviousness of the protagonist. She's strong on every level: physically, mentally, and emotionally. I don't think the author intended for her to look stupid but there are areas when dealing with other people that make her look clueless.

Book Review: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

4 out of 5
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning?
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
My Thoughts:
I think out of any YA fiction I have read I would recommend this for YA the most. The character comes off as extremely unemotional for me but it's very fitting for the story. I commend the author for such a strong female protagonist. I think people need to learn from the protagonists self-efficiency, strong will, and independence.
