Coming out of hibernation
Winter can’t decide if it’s coming or going these days in the Hudson Valley. But I’m stubbornly, determinedly venturing forth. After a season spent nesting, gestating, birthing, and snuggling, me and little baby Molly are peeking our heads out and beginning to go onadventures. Of course, when you’re seven weeks old, everything is an adventure: going to the grocery store, walking around the block, taking a drive to New Jersey to visit Grammy. But soon, we’ll be going on book adventures, too. I...

Baby! Or: the crossing of the return threshold
On Sunday, I had a baby. Internet, meet my daughter, Miss Molly B.
When I was pregnant, my editor told me that having children was like an awesome fantasy novel–a long, exhausting, frequently dirty, but ultimately amazing journey. I feel like childbirth is sort of like returning from a fantasy kingdom. You’ve been transformed by your journey through the wardrobe; for you, a whole lifetime has passed. But in England, life goes on as it always has, untouched by the magic that’s working its way i...

Progress, Pregnancy, and Turning Thirty
First, I hope everyone had a very happy holiday season, and that this happiness stretches on and on into the New Year!
Second, I turn thirty today. This seems like a good time to pause and reflect.
Some people are shaken by the prospect of growing older. I’m not–the truth is, I’m excited. Maturation has been a fascinating process; with each passing year, I know myself better and more intimately. I am more settled, saner, sounder. This was true when I went from twelve to thirteen and from sevent...

Ideas for Giftmas
Hey all! Hope you’re doing well this wintry December. We’re good here–buried under about a foot of snow, granted, but since we have no need to dig out our car anytime soon, I really can’t complain! I finished all my holiday shopping early this year, but if you haven’t, here are five suggestions of the literary sort you might want to add to your shopping list!
Charm & Strange by Stephanie Kuehn
This is the first book I’ve beta read that’s made it to publication–and is now a Morris Award nominee....

I was not a future engineer: GoldieBlox and doll-shaming models of feminism (or, the dolly post)
When I was six, I fell in love with a doll. We’d received an American Girl catalog in the mail and there, at the back, was a two page spread of Molly McIntire, shown at actual size. She wore her hair in braids; she wore a jaunty beret; she wore glasses. The copy told me she was a nine-year-old girl growing up during World War II. I had never seen anything like her. I was filled with want.
I read all her books, penned by the inimitable Valerie Tripp. And I found myself reflected in them. Molly...

The void. How try say? How try fail? No try no fail. Say only -
[image error] All of old. Nothing else ever. Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
This is a post about failure.
The void. How try say? How try fail? No try no fail. Say only -
When I was a kid, I loved chess. I loved chess because I loved Lewis Carroll, and Martin Gardner’s The Annotated Alice and the living chess tournament at my local renaissance festival. My father had an electronic chess board. I spent hours with it, losing over and over again. I played games against my...

October Retrospective and Winter Reflections
Hullo, Internet!
I had a wonderful October. Did you?
First was New York Comic Con, where I had a wonderful panel on Heroes and Heroines in Science Fiction, alongside authors Cristin Terrill, Kass Morgan, Robinson Wells, Adam Sternbergh, and Mindee Arnett. It was my first NYCC experience and quite overwhelming–but I saw some old friends and made some new, including a reader who had been waiting since Readercon to grab a copy of Starglass. Was quite touched by that!
Then a few weeks later, it was...

In case you didn’t know, Northern Virginia is the birthplace ofStarglass–I wrote the first draft while living in Arlington. I worked from home, and would go on walks during my lunch break through the townhouses and par...
