Writing Identity in a Prejudicial World
Today's not supposed to be a blogging day, but, dear God, Gentle Readers, am I procrastinating. I have two chapters to write before my draft of Daughter of Earth is finished. My husband is away, and I'm not working today, and it's rainy and dreary and the perfect sort of day to write. But instead, I'm doing things like watching bad, old movies (Robert Downey Jr. and Keifer Sutherland as bff college students? Yum), putting pink streaks in my hair, taking a bunch of pictures of said pink...

Review: Invincible Summer by Hannah Moskowitz
Invincible Summer by Hannah Moskowitz
Recommended.
I hesitated a moment about whether or not to put Hannah Moskowtiz' upcoming sophomore novel Invincible Summer on my recommended shelf. I had two niggling, persistent concerns with the book (which I'll discuss a bit later) that nearly eclipsed my enjoyment of it. However, at its core it's an emotionally effective, stirring read, told in a style that's at times both nicely sparse and poetic. Contrary to the impression given by its cover, it's a ...

Review: A Long, Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan
Note: I know Thursdays are supposed to be my non-book-related blogging day, but I'm thisclose to finishing Daughter of Earth and my brain is all mushy and useless. Luckily, I've been reading a ton (words beget words!), so I have some reviews in the hopper. Of books I've enjoyed! I hope I don't lose my street cred. Ahem.
A Long, Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan
Recommended.
It wasn't until the halfway point of Anna Sheehan's upcoming debut A Long, Long Sleep that it won me over. Initially, I feared...

Time to Step Up My Game
Happy belated Typing Tuesday, Gentle Readers! First thing's first, news (in an unordered list!):I had a short story accepted with Aoife's Kiss! Yay! The story is "Ageveline," and it's a sci-fi retelling of James Joyce's "Eveline." It was, in many ways, the source material for Daughter of Earth (though it's so, so different from it; different girl, different generation ship). I'm psyched to share it with you. It'll be appearing in the March 2012 issue.I've accepted an Articles Editor position...

Review: Liar by Justine Larbalestier
Liar by Justine Larbalestier
Recommended.
Liar by Justine Larbalestier is, in many ways, a series of confessions—an apology for past wrong-doings, and an attempt to set things right. Just as Micah Wilkinson tells us, over and over through the course of the narrative, that she once was a liar, and just as she struggles (I think) with telling the truth this time around, I feel I must open my review with a confession, and a vow that, this time, things will be different.
My name is Phoebe, and I...

Adventures in Air . . . AND SPACE!
My husband turned 33 on Wednesday, and to celebrate his encroaching agedness, we decided to honor the big ol' little kid in him and went to the Air and Space Museum to look at some airplanes.
Jordan is proof positive that you can retain your sense of wonder well into adulthood, as evidenced by these photos:

Jordan points out his favorite satellite.
I have to admit: I'm not quite so bowled over by mere airplanes. Oh, I do my best to see how such technology actually touched history, how people...

There Are No Shortcuts. Also . . . Buy My Book!
First thing's first, Playthings of the Gods, that ebook anthology which includes my story "The Long Summer," was released today! It's available here, at Drollerie Press's book store. If you buy a copy, do let me know what you think! In case you couldn't tell, I love feedback!
Secondly, I stumbled across something I wanted to talk about with the blogging world today, something that felt appropriate for Typing Tuesdays. As work has been slow this month, I've been casually perusing freelancing...

Bloggy Blog Lovefest: An Ode To Tracey Neithercott
The wonderful Kate Hart & co. have decided to spread the Valentine's Day schmoopy today, tasking writers to pen odes to other writers as a VDay big ball o' love. Here's my meager little love letter!
Dear Tracey:
I'm going to be honest, because what am I if I am not that? When our eyes first locked across that virtual café eight long days ago today, my heart hiccupped. You said you were writing YA sci-fi. Hey, I said, me too! And then you said you lived in Virginia, which is where I live, and I ...

Review: This Girl is Different by JJ Johnson
This Girl Is Different by JJ Johnson
JJ Johnson's 2011 Peachtree debut This Girl is Different raised a note of nostalgia in me. Because, you see, there were rebels in my high school, too.
I attended high school in the era of Columbine. Back then, the administration figured it would be a good idea to call any kid who regularly wore black in for questioning as to whether they posed a bomb thread. At the time, I'd just started to go a little weird myself, but not so far to invite scrutiny. I...
