Sunday Prepper Bible Study-The True Vine

I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.  Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

John 15:1-4

Something about me gravitates to those crystal clear verses that need no explanation. Today’s verse is certainly one of them.

Are you having trouble bearing fruit? Does your life lack peace, love, joy, faithfulness, kindness, goodness, patience, or self-control? That’s all fruit of the Spirit. It’s not something you learn how to have. A branch on grapevine doesn’t strain and stress about making grapes. It just happens. It just happens because the branch is connected to the vine.

If the power of God is not flowing through your life, changing who you are and how you act, then you have a connection problem, pure and simple.

If you’re feeling mean, angry, impatient, and miserable, it’s not the circumstances in your life causing it. Jesus said, in this life you will have trouble. And, he promised that you would still be able to handle it with grace. But only when you have a solid connection to the vine.

This week, try unplugging from the world and the things of the flesh. Turn off the TV, log out of Facebook, and quit tweeting. Work on your connection to the True Vine. Spend a little more time in God’s Word, listen to some worship music, and replace your favorite podcast with some solid Biblical teaching like that of Pastor Chuck Smith. Yes, even if your favorite podcast is Prepper Recon.

Sunday Prepper Bible Study-Faithful Shepherds

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

1 Timothy 5:17

I spend a lot of time dishing out tongue-lashings for the apostate pulpits in America. As I don’t see any dramatic change in the overall health of the American Church, you should expect more of the same in the future. As much as I hate to hear myself say it, I actually believe it’s part of my calling. Not for the sake of the effeminate, complacent, lukewarm cowards who parasitically live off of the widow’s mite, but for your sake. Most churches in America are so far off of the standard provided in God’s Word, yet the parking lots and offering plates are overflowing. Someone has to stand on the wall and scream, “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.”

In my rants, I can overlook the faithful shepherds, those who are teaching the whole council of God, men like Pastor Greg Sempsrott of Vero Beach Church of God, Pastor Mike MacIntosh of Horizon Christian Fellowship, and Pastor Mike Spaulding of Calvary Chapel Lima, Ohio. To the men who have chosen the narrow gate, the hard and often thankless work of speaking the truth, and faced unknown spiritual attacks in serving God faithfully, I say thank you.

If you are in an apostate church, get out. Get out today. Like Lot fleeing from Sodom, take your family out of that mess and don’t look back.

If you are in a good church that preaches the Word faithfully in season and out, pray for your pastor. Pray for him every day. The enemy is seeking to take him out. And the devil’s arsenal to destroy pastors is growing day by day. Finally, write him a note of encouragement. One of Satan’s most successful tools against effective men of God is discouragement. The seeds of discouragement are most often sown through emails and criticisms which come from their own flocks. Immature Christians who are so caught up in their own head and can’t see past their own hands, have zero empathy for what it’s like to take on the cares of running a church, and are quick to dish out their opinions like Monday-morning armchair quarterbacks. Those with words of encouragement often get derailed by some seemingly more important task. Take the time right now. Click over to your email tab and let your faithful pastor know that he’s doing a good job. Let him know that you are going to be praying for him. It will be like a drink of cold water to a weary desert traveler to your pastor, and God will bless you for it.

Jesus said, “what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his own soul?” Prepper translation: “What good will it do you to survive the coming economic collapse, nuclear war, or even a zombie apocalypse if you don’t know you will go to heaven when you die.” A recent study found that 10 out of 10 people die! Sunday Prepper Bible Study-The Plum Line

 

And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Acts 17:10-11

Christianity isn’t a to-do list. Neither is it a to-don’t list. It’s a relationship with the Messiah, Jesus Christ. But, like all relationships, it requires effort on your part. So, you go to church every Sunday. That’s great. In fact, Hebrews 10 specifically tells us to make a priority out of meeting with other believers. Being part of the Body of Christ, the Church, is an important part of your relationship with Jesus. And so is reading the Word.

In today’s verse, we see the Jews in Berea eagerly listening to Paul and Silas as they share the good news of salvation. But the Berean Jews don’t stop there. The Bereans fact check everything Paul and Silas have said about Jesus by holding it up against the prophecies of the Messiah written in the Hebrew scriptures.

Likewise, it’s fantastic to go to church, meet together with other believers, and hear an uplifting sermon. But, was the sermon you just heard biblical? Do you have a plum line to hold up against Pastor Joe’s message this morning, or is your pastor your highest authority? We have to remember that the coming of Christ did away with the old covenant, and with it, went the priesthood.

Revelation 1:6 says Jesus has made us kings and priests unto God. So, you have the same title as Pastor Joe. It’s a level playing field. The flip side of that is that while you have the same authority as Pastor Joe, you also have the same responsibility. No longer can we say, “All that Bible stuff is Pastor Joe’s job.” It’s your job to know the Bible inside and out. You don’t need any fancy commentaries nor a degree from the seminary, although some may feel called to such things*. You just need the discipline to get up and study the Bible for yourself daily. Pray that God will open your eyes and give you understanding. There’s no better commentary on the Bible than the Bible itself, and there’s no better teacher than God. Quoting from Isaiah, Jesus said in John 6, “And they shall be all taught of God.”

Once you’ve developed the discipline of daily Bible reading, you’ll be like the Berean Jews who were able to uphold what they’d been told by Paul and Silas against the truth of God’s Holy Word.

*As a caveat against commentaries and seminaries, if you feel God is calling you to such things, I implore you to spend a couple of years reading and studying the Bible on your own first, so you’ll be able to discern between the wheat and the chaff in that arena. Many well-intended Christians have been led astray by bad doctrine and unbiblical teachings from commentaries and seminaries to which they dedicated much time and energy, in hopes of pleasing God.
