Sunday Prepper Bible Study-Tongues of Angels-Part 2

Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order.

1 Corinthians 14:39-40

Last week we looked at church doctrines that diverge from the Bible by saying that people who do not speak in tongues have not been baptized by the Spirit.

On the other side of the aisle are the denominations that categorically reject the practice altogether. As we can see from today’s verse, it requires quite a bit of biblical hopscotch and a good dose of conjecture to justify such a doctrine.

Some folks just aren’t comfortable with the practice of speaking in tongues. If that’s you, the good news is you probably don’t have that gift anyways. The bad news is, it’s still in the Bible.

“Love your enemies.” I’m uncomfortable with that one. I could pick it apart. I could propose that in the original language love probably meant something different. I could say that it’s not applicable for today, or I could avoid that section of scripture altogether. None of those things changes God’s Word. Jesus said it and I’m disobedient if I don’t do it.

Paul gave very specific instruction on how the gift of tongues was to be practiced in the church. He said, “If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.”

So if the Bible is so clear on how this gift is to be practiced, why is it that I’ve seen it done this way exactly once? And trust me when I tell you I’ve been to lots of churches. As a disclaimer, some of the churches would have been too large for the speaker or the interpreter to have been heard by the whole church. It’s not an excuse, just an observation.

The simple conclusion to all of this is that America is full of churches with doctrine that contradicts God’s Word. Some get off the path to the right and others to the left. Satan isn’t picky. He’ll take either one. So don’t get your doctrine from church. Get it from the Bible, then find the church that most closely aligns with what God’s Word says. And don’t let anyone tell you that you need a degree to understand the Bible. The time of the scribes and pharisees are over.

Jesus said, “what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his own soul?” Prepper translation: “What good will it do you to survive the coming economic collapse, nuclear war, or even a zombie apocalypse if you don’t know you will go to heaven when you die.” A recent study found that 10 out of 10 people die! Sunday Prepper Bible Study-Tongues of Angels

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;  To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

1 Corinthians 12

 

The Bible is so crystal clear in what it says about everything. And most everything is stated so plainly and simply. How then, can we explain the vast amount of variation in the interpretation of the Bible?

Much of that can be attributed to what I like to call biblical hopscotch. In hopscotch, the players toss a rock on the board, then have to jump around through several boxes to finally get to the box where the rock landed. Likewise, much church doctrine requires a lot of jumping around to say why a certain passage of scripture does not mean what it says.

In today’s passage, Paul clearly tells the church in Corinth that the Holy Spirit assigns various gifts to different people.

In verse 29 he asks a rhetorical question.  “Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?”

The obvious answer is “no.” Why then, do we have churches teaching people that if they don’t speak in tongues that they have not yet been baptized in the Spirit? This passage of scripture should be as clear as a bell. Everyone does not get that gift.

Today’s study is not an attack on any particular denomination, in fact, Assemblies of God are in my top-3 list of major denominations and movements when I’m looking for a church. Today’s message is yet another challenge for you individually to read the Bible for yourself. You cannot depend on Church doctrine. You must know it for yourself.

However, if you believe that people who don’t speak in tongues are not baptized by the spirit,the consequences of this doctrine can be severe. If you haven’t been given this gift, you may never look to see what gifts you have been given. Wouldn’t it be a shame to have the gift of prophecy, teaching, or discernment and never use it?

Sunday Prepper Bible Study-The True Vine-Part 2

I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

John 15:5-6

Like last week’s verse, here’s another one that needs very little explanation. Some folks will try to add lengthy expositions to this section of scripture to make it say something it doesn’t, but the Word of God is eternal and unchanging. Some may tell you these withered branches are being cast into a purifying fire. They’ll give you a false sense of security by telling you that it doesn’t matter if you bear fruit in keeping with repentance. They’ll say that those who say otherwise are teaching salvation by works.

We know that salvation is by grace through faith, and that not of yourselves; not of works, lest anyone should boast. Neither is the fruit you bear of yourselves, but it is a natural result of being connected to the vine. But as a branch, you do have a job to do. You need to stay connected to the vine. This requires discipline. It means reading the Bible, listening to worship music, attending church, and prayer. If you are not making a priority for these things, you are not abiding in the True Vine. Jesus said such branches wither and are cast into the fire.

Don’t naively think this is a fire of refinement. Fire is indifferent. Whether it is a refining fire or a destroying fire depends on the substance being cast into it. Silver is refined by fire. Dried branches are destroyed by fire.
