Project Life® 2018 | Week Twenty-Five
Last week I took a bit of time to tell some stories from last June in my 2018 Project Life® album.
Anyone else still working on their 2018 (or earlier) project? Do you have a plan or are you just winging it as you go when you are in the mood? Do you value having it all done or taking your time and enjoying the process (not that it has to be an either/or)?
I've been working on 2018 and including one spread each month in the Story Classroom. I've got the albums hanging out on top of some shelves in my office so I remember to come back to them when I have a chance. Many of the spreads include the photos and are just waiting for me to add the words and any other embellishments.
Making it happen today.
Here's a look at the simple spread:
I've had these fun Summer/Everyday journal cards on my table since last summer. Yep, sometimes that's just how it goes. I loved using them as homes here in this spread for a bunch of my 3x4 photos this week. They are no longer available in the physical format from my shop which means some of you guys out there have them in your stash: this is your chance to get them out. If you missed them you can grab them digitally here.
On top of the journal card I used the Phrases Roller Stamp to add another sentiment. Some spreads include more photos and some include more words and some have a generally balanced mix of both. This one leans more to the photo-heavy side.
Fabric circles were Add On's for Stories By The Month™ subscribers.
Added writing directly onto a couple photos in both black and white (white is with the POSCA Pen).

Office Tour 2019
One of the things I've learned is that there never really is "perfect" time.
There's never a perfect time to start memory keeping. There's never a perfect time to get married or get a divorce or get remarried. There's never a perfect time to take a vacation. There's never a perfect time to take a break. There's never a perfect time to do this or that.
With that in mind I decided to just pick up my camera and give you a tour of what's happening in my office right now. I didn't clean it all up to make it presentable - I wanted to share it with you how I see it most days. A mix of picked up and messy - perfectly imperfect.
Here's a tour of what it looks like right now:
Ikea Varde Kitchen Islands (they don't have these any more but something like this would also work if you like the general idea) Ikea Galant Corner Desks (this looks like a newer version of what I have) Ikea Kallax Shelves 12x12 Plastic Paper Trays (the ones I'm linking are similar to the ones I have but not the same) Studio Lights Ceiling Mount For Camera Ikea 8.5x11 Shelf Inserts Canon Pixma MG7720 Printer Brother Sewing Machine XL2600i Office chairs from Amazon (have really liked these and would order them again) Rode Podcaster Mic iPad Pro + Pencil Procreate Epson PictureMate PM400 Printer HP LaserJet Pro 400 color Silhouette Cameo Epson Sure Color p400 Ikea Dragan Boxes 6 Hole Punch Metal Baking Trays (used under my work tables) AED Stamps AED Inks AED Paints Snappy Tray Craft Mat

Listen Story Kit™ + June Stories By The Month™
In the
Story Classroom this month we are focusing on stories related to the theme of Listen.
Here are a few thoughts about this particular theme:
A big piece of many of our lives are the sounds we hear as we go about our daily lives. Music, voices, and general noise of life fill our days. This month we are telling stories about listening and what that means to us in our lives.
Initial story ideas for the Listen theme include:
Document what you are listening to right now. That might be a soundtrack or it might be other sounds in your life. Pay attention to conversations happening around you. Write one of them down and tell that story. Are you a good listener? What are the qualities that make up someone who is a good listener?
HEADS UP: We've made a change to how we are offering the Add On's this month. The different Add On's will now be available to all Story Kit™, Story Stamp™, and Stories By The Month™ subscribers - this excludes Digital Story Kit/Story Class subscribers since you don't have any part of your subscription shipped already. Please note that the Crafters Ink pad option will only be available to Story Stamp™ subscribers. You can see this month's Add On's and read more below.
If you are new to the Story Subscription program, check out all the details here.
If you are already a subscriber the content in the classroom will be available to you on the 15th.

Story Subscription program! If you have any questions about this program please let me know below in the comments.
Stories By The Month™ kits now include 4x6 chipboard, 3x4 and 4x6 cards, a 3x4 stamp, a sticker sheet, and an embellishment (wood veneer, cork, etc). Subscribers were sent an email last month with information related to this adjustment, including the price increase and the option to cancel your subscription without penalty. If you have questions about this adjustment please reach out to my Customer Service Team. Stories By The Month™ Kits are all based on the designs we offered digitally each month throughout 2018.
Here is a full look at the kit for May:
And a video overview:
This subscription is a great option for those who are looking to tell more calendar/everyday life sorts of stories.
This month we are making a change to our Add On options and making them available to all Story Kit™, Story Stamp™, and Stories By The Month™ subscribers
(this excludes Digital Story Kit/Story Class subscribers since you don't have any part of your subscription shipped already). Please note that the Crafters Ink pad option will only be available to Story Stamp™ subscribers.
Our goal with this change is to decrease the overall amount of products offered as Add On's across all the kits but increase the quantities of the items we do offer with the hope that we will be making more of what you guys actually want (vs. more product overall). It's all still a work in progress.
Current and new subscribers can select + purchase Add-On's via your new drop-down menu access under your user name in the top right corner of the site. If you subscribe to more than one you will have a Box for each subscription and the ability to purchase Add-On's for each one. Depending on product availability subscribers may be able to purchase the Add-On's after the Add-On period has ended and regular shop shipping rates will apply because they will ship separately from the kit.
Check out
this post for more information about this new subscription, including differences between the subscription options offered.

Week In The Life™ 2019 | Sunday Words + Photos
Wrapping up Week In The Life™ for 2019 using the lens of gratitude.
Thank you so much for all the words + photos you shared this week. I know some of you are working on this project at different times either before or after this week and I simply love that people are getting their stories told.
I'll start working on the album portion of my project this week and will share more as that process develops.
Here's a look at my Sunday:
Gratitude for kids that got up early to make gluten free pancakes in heart shapes with strawberries on top.
Gratitude for the car that’s going to get us to the beach to visit my Mom and their Grandma today.
Gratitude for this beautiful spot.
Gratitude for sand jumping, popcorn, walks on the beach, and a Portland Trailblazers win.
Visiting my parents is like going to flower nursery. They filled up the back of my car today with a bunch of things for me to plant here at home. I come from pretty long line of people (both my parents and their parents at least) who liked working in the garden + growing stuff. Such a gift.
Gratitude for making it back home safe and sound. Gratitude for this project that, year after year, invites me to “look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now.” Gratitude for this community.
Again, thank you for joining me in this project this year no matter how many photos you took or words you wrote down. I hope you were able to look at your life as it is right now and get at least a few stories recorded.

Week In The Life™ 2019 | Saturday Words + Photos
I love Saturdays.
This one was full of kids and sports and working in the yard and a little "work" work. I loved using the lens of celebrating for this day. It's a simple word that I come back to again and again and it's such a fun way to look at and tell stories from your life.
Simon started the day off above by celebrating with sleeping in, comic reading, and hot chocolate.
Celebrating another load of laundry getting moved around. I actually really don't mind doing the laundry much at all.
Celebrating girls who wake up from a sleepover and immediately head outside in their onesies to play more make-believe games.
Celebrating an early morning quick trip to the the Lane County Farmers Market for a BNF Kombucha refill, eggs, asparagus, snap peas, strawberries, and a salad mix. I love my reusable mesh bags that I take with me to the market. They also work great at the grocery store because the tags include the weight of the bag so the person checking you out can just add that at checkout.
Celebrating Simon. Always, always, always. Today when we got back from the Farmer's Market he was playing a Star Wars Virtual Reality game (Jedi Challenge) that he got last Christmas.
Celebrating a few minutes upstairs in my office to finish up a few photo edits I wasn't able to get done yesterday before heading outside to work in the yard.
Celebrating today’s backyard calla lily harvest and friends who say “let’s just keep it casual and easy” when making plans for later.
Celebrating the fact that it's fun to experiment with photos and see what you get.
Celebrating the creativity of these kids today. Currently they are playing Chopped Jr in the kitchen.
I love hearing them use words like “compote” and “garnish.”
Celebrating Simon reading and researching out in the backyard while I was cleaning things up.
Celebrating how darn good those strawberries and greens were from this morning.
Celebrating this guy (Ernie). I always wanted to have a cat who wanted to sleep in this window box area off the living room.
Celebrating taking myself out to Thistledown Farms to pick out some more flowers including a couple new peonies to add to my collection, more lavender for my front yard, a couple tomato plants, and some annuals including a white geranium and some cosmos starts.
Celebrating how we all keep showing up and that Simon is basically as tall or taller than Chris.
Celebrating the end of another spring soccer season for Anna. Great coaches and great teams.
Celebrating a hot shower at the end of the day.
The last and final lens for this Week In The Life™ is gratitude. It's a great way to bring the documenting phase of this project to a close.
As always, thank you so much for being a part of this community and of valuing your stories.
Please feel free to share a link to your Saturday words + photos in the comments below.

Week In The Life™ 2019 | Friday Words + Photos
Ah, Friday. We made it to the weekend.
I totally feel like Anna looks in the photo above and am ready for a bit of a different rhythm this weekend. I've got a little work to do Saturday morning and then Anna has a soccer game and on Sunday we are heading down to my parents at the coast to celebrate Mother's Day with my Mom.
Today's lens was High/Low. I didn't really stick with this one as much as I have with some of the others and am giving my space to roll it. There weren't a lot of lows - this was a really decently awesome Friday and definitely felt like a summer kick off.
Here's a look at our day:
I watered some thirsty plants this morning (waiting to be planted) before doing the morning drive. I dropped Simon off first this morning so he could meet with a teacher in a class he's struggling with and then dropped Anna off and walked into school with her (per her request). I love walking her into school because I get to say hi to friends who work there and friends who are also dropping off. It's a nice way to start the day with friendly faces.
This was a definite high point of my day.
All the love to this person who spoke up and gave me this gift.
Things are good around here.
Got a hug and poured myself another cup of coffee before heading upstairs to work on filming projects.
Downstairs again for another cup of coffee (yeah, not an awesome pattern right now).
While I was down there Aaron and I launched into the beginnings our of conversations about summer screen time scenarios. I brought this up on my Instagram post and there were some really awesome suggestions that you can check out here.
After that detour I pretty much spent the rest of the day until 2pm working on projects in my office before heading back out again to pick up Anna and friends for an after-school hang out.
Today their class had a field trip to do a community service project at a local garden.
I took them to get ice cream from the grocery store.
While they hung out in the backyard practicing Hamilton songs (yes, that's awesome) I worked on a couple more projects in my office.
Love this view out the girl's bedroom window.
Yep, this makes me happy.
Simon gets out early from school on Fridays.
He texted Aaron and I when he got home that he was riding his bike to the pool (which is now open for the summer) and that he'd be back around 6pm. He's very punctual.
When he got back he told us that he wanted to go back to school tonight to watch someone he knew in the school play.
Love that he likes to show up and support people he knows.
These guys are loving the weather.
I'm totally a fan of having a whole crew of kids over here and I love it when they make up crazy games.
No one was hurt.
Yeah, it's good. And yeah, he's so tall.
I love how they are in the backyard, then the front yard, then the park and then back again to the front yard.
Isaac and his buddy playing a made-up game similar to Dungeons + Dragons. Love listening to them from the couch while I watched the Golden State/Rockets basketball game.
Again, the more the merrier.
Fridays are for sunshine and sleepovers and running through the sprinklers and playing at the park until dark and friends and sisters and being silly.
Here's to the weekend!
Saturday's story lens is "celebrating" and Sunday's is "giving thanks."

Week In The Life™ 2019 | Thursday Words + Photos
I have to tell you guys that I had such an interesting experience with my guiding prompt today.
This morning when I first started thinking through the lens of "tough stuff" it felt like an ill-fitting coat. Part of the reason it didn't feel right is that the season I'm in now is generally positive (and I'm super thankful all the time knowing that it's not always like that). It struck me that I spend a lot of my time looking through positive lenses - finding the silver lining, practicing gratitude, looking for the good, and figuring out ways to embrace real life for what it is and keep moving forward without getting caught up in the negative in a debilitating way.
I know and embrace that the tough stuff is simply a regular part of life.
I ended up thinking about the many ways my life is different. I am significantly more emotionally healthy at this point in my life. I attribute that to a variety of things including medication that has evened out my mood swings (I am able to be so much less reactive), marrying Aaron (not just marrying anyone but him specifically), the kids being older and more independent, my work life being more balanced, and simply knowing myself so much better.
My past and current struggles are a piece of the story of who I am. They impact how I see, live, and tell my stories today.
Here's a look at some photos from Thursday:
Eyes on the road.
In my Instagram stories today I shared a lesson I learned when Simon was in elementary school about paths and black/white thinking and advocacy. The bottom line was that sometimes the solutions to the things we are banging our heads against the wall about are actually wonderfully simple if we are willing to let go of specific expectations of when things are “supposed” to happen.
Simon did the morning drive today where we drop Anna off first before circling back to his school.
On the drive we talked about the reasons I like to leave early in order to not have to be in a hurry. When you're not in a hurry you can just enjoy the drive, no matter how bad the traffic might be along the way. If you're not in a hurry you are a whole lot less likely to get easily frustrated.
I love that he gives me a hug when he gets out of the car after driving before I get back into the driver's seat.
Back at home and back into my office.
Today included an hour long phone meeting to go over future project directions.
After the call I came downstairs and found Aaron having breakfast (he told me not to tell you what time it was) and I made another cup of coffee.
And moved the laundry around.
So much of our lives is the chatter happening in our heads - the stories we are telling ourselves and the words we repeat over and over. I thought about that a lot today as I went about my day. Was I saying nice things to myself or was I being self critical? Was I telling myself the truth or was I creating stories or relying on old narratives that might not actually be true any longer?
In my office today I filmed videos for the next kit release on the 13th (the new theme is Listen) and thought about my working life.
I’m not someone who grew up imaging I would own a business (there were times I imagined a completely different existence) but I did know that I hoped to live a life that served others in some way.
My path has been one of privilege and I always want to remind myself of that when I tell my own story. I had support, I had an education, I had safety nets. I was also lucky and the timing was right within the industry I found myself excited about after Simon was born. I put in hours + months + years (I sometimes forget this piece of the story) and found myself in a position to do work that is meaningful to me personally.
As with everything there have been highs and lows and choices and sacrifices and missteps and hard lessons learned and personal changes I’ve had to make and times when I’ve just held my breath through decisions I hoped would be the right ones. From the beginning I have been thankful and have always tried to keep learning along the way. Who knew that telling stories with words and photos and sharing that passion with a community of like-minded memory keepers could have such an impact on my life.
I am grateful and I plan to keep on learning as I go.
A few more minutes at my desk before heading out.
There is always more on my list.
Today included a long afternoon/evening of driving around: picking Simon up from school with a snack ready and taking him to an appointment, killing time for 45 mins - I usually go to Whole Foods while I wait, picking him up from that appointment and driving him to his 3 hour drivers ed class (I’ll grab dinner for him at Whole Foods that he will eat in the car), driving to Anna’s last soccer practice for the season where they have an annual players against parents scrimmage, then grabbing dinner for Anna and me before picking Simon up at 8pm. Aaron’s schedule is similar with the other three.
Full heart.
At Anna's soccer practice, before the parents vs. kids scrimmage, I had a bit of time to play around with some shots (I had both my DSLR and my iPhone).
I love looking through the lens with curiosity. What happens if I get down low, what happens if I get up close, what happens if I play with my settings, what happens if my focal point is on the grass and what happens when it’s on the girls playing?
These girls as tough and resilient and fun. Most of them have been playing soccer together since pre-Kindergarten (they are almost done with 4th grade now).
Anna might have not quite packed her soccer bag appropriately this morning (she forget her cleats, socks, and shorts). Tough lesson. She played in her Vans and called to ask me to bring her some shorts before she realized she didn't have her shoes or socks.
She lived.
After practice Anna and I stopped for dinner at a dim sum place she's been asking to go to for weeks.
We picked Simon up on our way home. He'd had a tough time on a written test at Driver's Ed tonight and was definitely feeling frustrated.
He was ready for bed.
The girls had a conversation about Anna wanting to move their beds around again. Audrey's not on board. Anna wants to be in the corner. You know, general sisters-who-share-a-room-before-bed-conversations. Anna ended up moving her head to the other end of the bed for a change up.
I was able to catch the end of the Blazer game. GO BLAZERS.
Elliott washing out his dishes as he makes his lunch for tomorrow.
He's a really good kid.
This house is full of good kids that are loved by a village.

Week In The Life™ 2019 | Wednesday Words + Photos
Wednesday found us with the boys having a no-school day (teacher walkouts for education funding) and the girls having school (one is at a charter school and the other goes to a Catholic school). The boys were happy and the girls were mildly bummed out but nothing major.
Throughout the day today I tried to actively think about the things I'm working on in my life, my business, my family, etc. It's an interesting lens to use as you go about your day and it definitely helped me see some things I might have missed or simply made me more aware of them.
I took fewer photos today and I'm okay with that. Again, I'm not trying to capture every single detail each day but rather use my camera as a vehicle to identify stories that are happening in our real lives right now.
Enjoy the process. No stress. Pick up your camera and see what you can see and what you can learn about yourself and your life in the process.
Here's a look at our Wednesday:
I'm working on really actively listening to Simon when he’s telling me a story. This morning it was about a scene from the Cat In The Hat movie. He recounts stories with such enthusiasm. Later in the day he read me a number of pages from the Stars Wars book he was reading. It's one of the ways he likes to connect.
I drove Anna to school/Mass this morning and noticed that I'm working on memorizing the Hamilton soundtrack.
I am working on gratitude for things big and small. Last year I grew a bunch of sweet peas and this year I just didn’t make it happen in time (according to the lady at my local garden center at least when I asked if they had any starts). This one grew up out of the pot I had a bunch in last year so I am treasuring just having a few blooms. Adore these.
I'm always working on celebrating this guy.
It's one of the easiest things I do.
I'm working on letting Katie be the boss of me. Actually I've been working on that for a long time and our working rhythm right is really good.
She comes over to the office once or twice a week and does the rest of her work from her house.
We are working on planning a bunch of different projects and products right now. We've always got something we are working on around here.
After we finished up the meeting I drove Simon over for one of his Driver's Ed practice drives (he's working on getting his license) and then came back and Katie and I worked together for a bit longer.
She's working on growing a baby that will be coming soon.
Isaac is working on learning more about computers which happens to be one of Aaron's areas of expertise.
We are always working on accepting and embracing and encouraging each one of us for who we are right now.
I'm working on getting myself outside during the day for morning reading or lunch. Today it was lunch (leftovers from last night).
I'm always working on noticing and paying attention. This shadow caught my eye today.
I'm working on a video sharing a flip through of a couple of my 6x8 albums and did the filming and editing today. I'll be sharing that in the next few weeks.
I'm working on learning how to use Procreate with my iPad and Apple Pencil vs. scanning things in like I've done in the past.
We are all working on our game faces.
After I picked Anna up from school we went home and picked up Simon and Issac and headed to the movies to see Shazam.
We all thought it was enjoyable. Popcorn for dinner is usually fun.
Aaron's working on getting our bike tires pumped up.
The McKercher kids are with their Mom tonight so Anna, Simon and I went on a bike ride to the park where Anna played on the equipment while Simon and I read our books.
She's working on building calluses while swinging on the monkey bars.
We rode back a little after 8pm and then started the process of getting ready for bed. Aaron is doing music tonight (which means he stays up super late and sleeps in the music room) so I'm looking forward to reading a bit more before falling asleep.
My initial theme for tomorrow is "tough stuff." I'm going to explore that a bit and take a look at some of the challenges happening around here currently (there's always something) and see what I can see.
Thank you for being a part of this storytelling community and for valuing your story.

Week In The Life™ 2019 | Tuesday Words + Photos
Tuesday was all about observing.
Observing others and myself as I went about my day.
Observing is the art of paying attention. It's the practice of looking for stories - for those that are happening around you as well as those that are happening to you.
I love capturing images of people as they are going about doing what they are doing. I encourage the kids not to look at the camera (most of the time) and instead ask them to engage in whatever it is that they are doing.
I also love the idea of observing myself and how I'm living my own life right now. Sometimes getting out of our heads enough to "see" ourselves in a given situation gives us a different point of view. This is one of the reason I continue to advocate for literally getting yourself out from behind the camera and in your photos/stories. Seeing myself do the stuff I do is one of the ways I make sense of my life.
Here's a look at my Tuesday.
One of the things I felt keenly aware of today was the passage of time.
I remember when I had a lot more kid responsibilities in the morning. These days they do pretty much all of it themselves: getting up, showering, feeding themselves, getting all their stuff together, etc.
We allow devices in the morning as long as everyone is getting the things done they need to do.
I love looking for lines and for color.
I handed the phone back to Anna this morning on the way to school and she took this shot and the selfie of herself below.
Simon has his permit now so sometimes he drives in the morning. Today he didn't ask and I came out to the car and he was already in the passenger seat.
Today I want to remember Simon blasting Queen songs all the way to school, including a couple I'd never heard before. He was totally into it and I was totally into it and it so reminded me of my high school years working at a local pool where music was so much a part of our days.
Might heart + mighty mind.
I love that in this shot she is observing herself. She is seeing herself through the lens of the camera.
I also heard a song on the radio today called Good Old Days by Macklemore that I was loving.
I texted Katie to see if she knew it already and, yep, she did:
Yep, that's how we roll.
Between drop off and my hair appointment I stopped at Target for window washer fluid, LaCroix, deodorant, cereal and a couple other things that jumped into my cart as things tend to do at Target. I showed restraint in the outdoor home and fake plant sections today.
Color and trim and fantastic conversation with the person who has been doing my hair for years now.
I came home to find Aaron in his music room/office working on work stuff and our sprinkler guy was here repairing some sprinkler heads and getting us all set up for the gloriously warm weather we are experiencing.
Lunch was leftovers and a couple sweet potato crackers and Kite Hill dip (awesome non-dairy dip made from cashews).
As soon as I saw this image I immediately went downstairs and cleaned under the cupboards.
This is real life. And to be honest I don't spend a lot of time on the floor in my kitchen but yeah, that's gross.
And then I settled in for some working hours. Today included designing an upcoming Story Kit and taking care of other odds and ends.
I took a break to go do some observing out in the yard. Cut a few stems off a giant lilac because I love how they look. These ones can't come inside because they really make my allergies angry. I put them in a vase on the table outside.
Aaron is worried that you will think all he does is puzzles all day long. He was eating lunch.
He's basically done this whole puzzle on his own this time.
On my table. I worked on a 2018 Project Life® spread and will be sharing it later next week.
Simon came home from school wiped out so he took a nap. Kramer watched over him.
The letter on his bed is an acceptance into his high school's National Honor Society.
I found Ernie napping in the sun on the floor in my bedroom.
Love it when I can get BOTH books + cats in the same shot.
Aaron did most of the driving around this afternoon so I prepped dinner while he picked up + dropped off Elliott and Isaac and then turned around and drove back across town to get the girls from their separate soccer practices.
After I got dinner prepped I cracked open an advance copy of Lindsay Teague Moreno's new book Boss Up: This Ain't Your Mama's Business Book (available for preorder).
This morning Simon and Anna and I left before Isaac was up and moving around and it was hilarious when these two were both back at home and realized they had on the exact same t-shirt (it's a Harry Potter Deathly Hallows shirt from Target).
After eating dinner with the boys (girls were still at soccer - we eat in waves) I headed out to my monthly book club.
Can't imagine not having these ladies in my life. We really do read - all of us pretty obsessively - and love to talk about the books. Tonight we were talking about Daisy Jones & The Six.
The view from book club tonight.
When I got back home Simon was practicing guitar, the girls were in bed fast asleep, and Aaron and Elliott and Issac were watching the Blazer game on TV.
I loved keeping the idea of observation top of mind as I went about my day today. It encouraged me to pause, to take in my surroundings, and to capture what I saw with my camera.
Tomorrow my theme is "working on." Looking forward to seeing what it's like to look through that lens.
