For The Love Of Books | What I Read In May 2019
When I first started to list out what I read last month I was only thinking in terms of the first two listed below. The reality is I've actually been reading a lot this past month and they are just different kinds of books vs. what I normally read (and I've been jumping around a bit more than normal since most of them are non-fiction).
Here's what I read and started reading last month:
The Valedictorian Of Being Dead by Heather B. Armstrong | 5 stars. I'm going with 5 stars on this one because I think it's such an important read about depression + hope + life. It's Heather's own experience - not a prescription - showing a path she took to get out of a significant depressive episode. It's also a lot about understanding and kindness and asking for help and showing up for people. Really important read. Boss Up: This Ain't Your Mama's Business Book by Lindsay Teague Moreno | I got to read an advance copy of this one (it's available for preorder now) and it's a fantastic, straight-talking roadmap for getting started and for continuing to evolve and thrive as a woman entrepreneur. Lindsay takes the lessons she’s learned through her own experience and shares them in an honest, humorous, and inspiring way. Boss Up will make you want to dive right in and take the next steps forward no matter where you are in the process. Clean Mama's Guide To A Healthy Home by Becky Rapinchuk | As part of my personal wellness journey (more to come in a later post with an update about this) I'm working on reducing toxins in my house and this book and her site have been so, so helpful to me. It's easy to read and it was super inspiring me - I literally went around my house and got rid of just about everything I could that was a toxic cleaning product/personal care item.
IN PROGRESS // These are ones I've started and am in progress. They are all related to discussions I had with my gynocologist recently about period pain, perimenopause, etc.
The Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden Woman Code by Alisa Vitti The Wahls Protocol and The Wahls Protocol Cooking For Life by Terry Wahls | This is the diet recommended by my gynocologist to manage both my period pain and my Hashimotos (autoimmune disease - I also do take medication for Hypothyroidism. I'm following her Level 2 recommendations (she has three levels that she presents in the book). So far so good for me over the last few weeks. I feel like I have a lot more energy related to the clean eating and I've been walking most days. Definitely not for everyone. Definitely talk to your own doctor.
I didn't order any books from Book Of The Month this month because I've been so into the other non-fiction books.
COMPLETE LIST OF WHAT I'VE READ IN 2019
JANUARY
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides (BOTM / Amazon) | Totally enjoyed this super-fast-to-read thriller. A great way to start out the new year. There There by Tommy Orange (local book club book for January) | This was a brutal book but an important read in terms of exposing ourselves to different voices - in this case Native Americans. There were lots of places I wished I would have underlined and I might just go back in and read it again for those words. It was a little confusing to follow the characters as it went back and forth - I definitely found myself flipping back to previous chapters to make sure I remembered whose perspective I was reading. Read it. Verity by Colleen Hoover | Super satisfying thriller. Started it one evening and finished the next morning. Just read it. The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith | Finally had a chance to start this series (written by JK Rowling under a pen name) and I totally enjoyed it. Detective mystery that kept me interested.
FEBRUARY
I’m Still Here: Black Dignity In A World Made For Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown | 5 stars. There is nothing else to say besides this: this is an important book that should be read by everyone. Stories matter, especially of those who have been and continue to be marginalized in our society. The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai | 5 stars. I loved this book. I loved the weaving of the two different time periods (1980's during the AIDS crisis in Chicago + 2015) and I loved how the author posed questions about love, friendship, memories, stories (and who gets to tell them), imperfect people (everyone), and the passage of time. It was heartbreaking and rich and beautifully written. The Winter Sister by Megan Collins (BOTM) | 3 stars. A fast ready but one that was really just "okay" for me. The characters, the story, the whole thing - it was just not quite there. I've read so many better thrillers over the last few years. A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum (BOTM) | 5 stars. Loved it. Go read it. Three generations of Palestinian-American women's stories of daily life, courage, family, expectations, faith, etc. Really enjoyed the storytelling and how it all unfolded. So many times as I turned the page I kept thinking to myself how the stories of these women continue today here in the US and around the world. So, so different than my life experience. This is why I read. The Perfect Nanny by Leila Slimani | 3.5 stars // Picked it up because it was included in the New York Time's 10 best books of 2018 (others I've read from that list included "There, There" and "The Great Believers" which were both really good). This book was a super quick read - read it over the course of one day - and it was interesting but not awesome. Some pieces felt disjointed - I kept waiting for the author to go deeper into the story. Maid by Stephanie Land | 3.5 stars. As an advocate for telling your story, I generally appreciate memoirs like this that detail how lives are lived because I believe there are always things to be learned from people's experiences. While reading her story I had a wide variety of thoughts running through my head regarding poverty, single-parenthood (a piece I have lived + was thankful every single day that I had a job to support myself and my children), the way the "system" works, as well as thoughts about people I have interacted with throughout my life. From that standpoint, I'm glad I read it (and it was a super quick read).
MARCH
Before She Knew Him by Peter Swanson (BOTM) | 3 stars. I found this to be a satisfying thriller. It's totally possible that I wasn't paying close enough attention while I was reading it (meaning I wasn't trying to figure out what was going to happen) but I definitely enjoyed it. Aaron read this on our vacation and also enjoyed it. Definitely good for a beach read. Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens | 4 stars. Beautiful writing that I definitely think will stay with me for awhile. My local book club read this last month and I missed the meeting because I wanted to read it myself before having a conversation and the early part of my month was just too full to make time. Daisy Jones + The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid | 4 stars. I initially resisted this title as I was thinking I wasn’t interested in a story about rock & roll but people kept talking about it and then my book club picked it and down the path I went. I am so glad I went down that path! I definitely had a hard time remembering that it was fiction. I kept wanting to look up the band online to listen to their music and see their faces and read what had been written about them. That’s basically how well written and clever this book is. Beyond that, I loved the entire format for how she told the story and I loved the themes of love and loss and addiction and honesty and passion. So good. Highly recommended. Next Year In Havana by Chanel Cleeton | 4 stars. Read this on vacation and loved the imagery. I'll definitely consider reading the new book she's coming out with that tells the story of Beatriz Perez: When We Left Cuba . The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith | 3 stars. This is the second book in the Cormoran Strike series and I didn't like it as much as the first one but it's a solid mystery with characters returning and their stories continuing. I like reading these ones on my Kindle on vacation. I'll definitely keep reading the series.
APRIL
Miracle Creek by Angie Kim (BOTM) | 3 stars. I really struggled with this book and I think it's probably just a personal problem with some of the subject matter surrounding autism. It's hard for me to articulate but I generally don't select books talking about Mom's + kids on the spectrum because it's already part of my daily life (and has been ever since my son was 2.5 years old). With this book I just kept having mixed feelings - about the characters, about the plot, about people trying to "fix" autistic people, etc. I'd be interested in hearing what other parents with kids on the spectrum felt about this one. All The You Leave Behind by Erin Lee Carr (BOTM) | 4 stars. I really, really liked this one. It shouldn’t be a surprise that I appreciate real life stories, but this one has really struck me for a particular reason: we live in an era where content/source material for our personal stories are able to be gathered via email and text and social media messages. Voices live on in their own words - similar to written letters of the past but also different (more immediate I guess). In this book I love reading David Carr’s words of encouragement to his daughter as she navigates early adulthood and addiction - he had a way with words that has me underlining and nodding and reflecting on my own life and relationships. So good. Lost And Wanted by Nell Fredenberger (BOTM) | 3.5 stars. I read this one while traveling and actually enjoyed the science mixed in with the story. I feel like I learned a little something about physics that is totally foreign to me and I liked the weaving through the story. I wanted to know how it was going to resolve itself and there were definitely parts that will stick with me. Wolfpack by Abby Wambach | 5 stars. This is a super quick read based on a commencement address and I loved it. Can't wait to share it with my girls.
You can see my 2018 Reading Recap post here and what I read in 2017 here.

HSN + Ali Edwards
Hey Friends,
One of my goals with my business and life is to encourage and inspire storytelling beyond those who are already in our community.
I’m excited to tell you that HSN has picked up some of my projects and will be featuring them in the coming months. I want to share a little about how we are approaching this so you’ll have a better understanding of what you’ll be seeing if you choose to watch.
The first project to be released will be a Travel Kit and an album (offered separately). For this first collection we needed to use products that were the same as the ones we were offering on my site due to the manufacturing timeline. The travel kit product configuration will be a little different than what we are offering on my site - it will include 3x4 cards, some 3x8 cards, the sticker sheets, and two chipboard sets.
This also means you’ll have another chance to grab that 3x8 mint travel album if you missed out here. It's actually available on their site now if you'd like to grab one.
You can see me live on HSN on Tuesday, June 11th at 11am Eastern.
In the future what we offer on HSN will be past designs in new colors. This means when you see December Daily® offered there later this year it will be some combination of 2018 designs that have been recolored (that will most likely happen in October). We will offer a newly designed 2019 December Daily® kit and coordinating products on my site in early September just as we’ve done in years past.
My hope is that this expansion of our offerings will introduce my projects to even more people who may not have been exposed to my memory keeping projects and philosophy previously.
You guys are my people. Thank you for being part of this community. Thank you for supporting me and being a part of this journey. Thank you for being brave with your stories and encouraging me to be brave with mine.

Week In The Life™ 2019 | Bringing It All Together Part 2
Today I'm sharing a look at my completed
2019 Week In The Life™ album along with a process video so you can see the steps I went through to finish this up.
Check out my Bringing It All Together Part 1 post here.
Here's what happened following my previous post and a few things to keep in mind:
I ended up printing 5, 3x4 photos and 4, 4x6 photos for each day. In past year's I've added in more photos - often adhering them back to back and then punching holes to add them to the album. This time I decided to just keep it to that number of photos (in addition to the enlargements I already printed in Part 1 of my process ) and I'm happy with how it turned out. Remember, you absolutely don't have to include every single photo you took over the course of the week. In fact, the more times you do this project it's likely that you'll learn that you need fewer photos to tell the story of your week. I went with a simple approach and limited my supplies to complete my album. I find that taking away the choices of using everything I have here in my office helps me to completely simplify the process and to use what I have. For me that obviously comes from the products that I offer here, but the idea can be use whether you use my products or not. Limit yourself to a few products as you bring your project together and let them do the work for you. Remember, there is no perfect life. There is just the beautiful, messy thing you have right in front of you right now.
Make this project work for you.
As always I'm so thankful to this community for coming together and sharing your stories over the course of the last few weeks. Let's do it again next year!
Let's take a look at how it all came together (I'm not adding text below every photo in this post as so much of it is covered in the video and it's repetitive - let me know if you have questions):
One thing I added was the
"a week in the life" chipboard piece to the inside cover of my album.
I love that no matter what page I turn to in the album I can see that title along the side.
Information on how I set this album up before I did any of the documenting can be found
here (post includes a word art download for the quote you see above).
In this part of the process I added my 3x4 and 4x6 photos and then added embellishments on top.
I loved adding the transparent circle stickers from the
Variety Sticker Bundle and ended up adding them to a bunch of my photos throughout the album.
I decided to add 3x4 photos to the 3x4 journal cards I'd added in during
the set-up process for my album. I did this mainly because I kept all my journaling together vs. separating it out to go alongside individual images.
On top of my enlarged images I added the patch stickers from the
Main Kit.
I added Avery Index Tabs to the 3x8 food pages. As you'll see below I still need to add my food on some days.
I also printed 3x8 photos for each day that have something to do with food. On top of those images I aded the cork days of the week from the
Main Kit.
For the last four 4x6 pockets for each day I added 4x6 images I printed with a white border. On top of many of those images I added the black die cuts from the
Main Kit or chipboard pieces or circle stickers. I generally just added one per photo.
I pretty much just followed that formula for the rest of the days.
Loved adding that large black + white circle from the
Main Kit onto my sunset photo.
Yep, still need to add my food for the day.
Love looking for opportunities to place embellishments inside shapes in my images (like the cork in the coffee cup).
On a couple pages I added chipboard pieces to the back of the transparencies.
Loved using words/phrases from the
sticker bundle on one of the photos from Anna's soccer practice.
Thank you so much for being a part of this year's adventure in documenting a
Week In The Life™. Please let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.

For The Love Of The 6x8 Size In Scrapbooking
I recently received a request to share some pages from my 6x8 albums.
It was a great oppotunity for me to talk about why I love this size and how it's been working for me over the last few years.
One of the places people tend to get hung up when it comes to memory keeping is struggling with sizes. I'm an equal opportunity memory keeper and still create layouts in a variety of sizes including 12x12, 9x12, 8.5x11, 6x8 and 3x8.
At some point in the past I stopped worrying about having all the same matching albums and started focusing a whole lot more on getting my stories told and simply using my albums as the home for those stories. You can see some of my past posts about album organization here.
As you'll hear me mention in the video, most of the layouts you'll see were created using products and themes from the Story Kit™. I tell four stories each month using the Story Kit™ - usually I do three layouts (of varying sizes but usually including 6x8) and a Project Life® spread. I share those in the classroom for that subscription. The monthly themes direct and inform and give me a pathway for my storytelling and I welcome that wholeheartedly. In the video I also mention my love for "one page photo/one page journaling" spreads and you'll see that come up again and again as a foundation for the stories I tell especially in this 6x8 size.
PRODUCT NOTE: We hope to be able to stock the greige and black pleather albums again in the future. At this time we have navy pleather 6x8 along with a bunch of different chipboard album options if you are wanting to start a home for your 6x8 stories.
Feel free to let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.

Here's a look at what's included with the Travel Main Kit this year:
MAIN KIT // $29.99 : This kit includes a large envelope with travel phrases printed on top, a 3x8 Tavel log paper pad, a 4x6 chipboard set, rubber pennant flags, plastic words, cork icons, plastic hexagons, story cards (3x2), skinny paper flags, word/phrase sticker, pleather rectangles, and 4x6 and 3x4 cards.
ALBUMS : This year we are offering a 6x8 chipboard album ($24.99) and a 3x8 linen album ($19.99) with a map printed on the inside cover.
Both include a variety of 24 page protectors to hold your stories.
STAMPS // $15.99 : This release includes four new stamp sets: a 3x4 number set ($9.99), a 4x6 uppercase alphabet, a 4x6 large icon, and a 4x6 tag builder.
3x8 JOURNAL CARDS // $7.99 : These are great if you like the 3x8 size and they are also great for adding 3x8 page protectors to the 6x8 albums if you are wanting something bigger. These are the same weight and quality as my regular journal cards.

In the video below you'll see the difference - they are true 3x8 and 6x8 including the area where the holes are punched. They definitely still work but I just want you to be aware of the sizing issue. I actually think they looked pretty cool inside the page protector. They can also be cut up or you might just like to have different sized pages in your projects outside the page protectors.
STICKER BUNDLE // $6.99 : Three different designs with two sheets of each design.
CLEAR BAGS // $4.99 & $3.99 : This year we are also offering two different sized zippered bags for purchase. These are great if you want to take along a Scrapbook On The Road kit with you or if you just like a place to store things you collect while you are traveling. Really they can be used for just about anything. White polka dots for the win.
Please note: I didn't have the sticker bundle in house or two of the chipboard sets when I filmed this video but they will all be available.
With last year's Travel Collection I debuted two brand new workshops: Stories Of Travel and Travel Product Play.
Stories Of Travel will be back again in case you missed it last year. This will be open as a self-paced workshop on Wednesday and the content will be the same as last year as it's generally evergreen content.
We will have a brand new Travel Product Play workshop coming that uses the products from this year's release (the workshop for last year includes products from last year's release - it is still available here). This workshop will be available for registration on June 10th with the content beginning on June 25th.
If you are more interested in creating an album to take on the road with you I've also got my classic Scrapbook On The Road workshop always available.

Week In The Life™ 2019 | Bringing It All Together Part 1
I've been diving into bringing all my content together into my
Week In The Life™ album and loving the process.
To see my starting place before the documenting week - meaning a few things I set up in my album in advance -
check out this post which includes a couple pages at the beginning of my album and most of Monday. I'm one of those people who basically sets up a design formula and then follows that throughout the rest of the album. It simplifies the process overall and takes away some of the choices for each day - that's a welcome thing for me.
I decided to separate out my journaling again this year rather than attach words to each individual photo. I do this mainly because it makes the entire process take less time and I don't mind at all having all my words together in one place.
More on that below.
My enlarged photos and my journaling were all printed here at home using a Canon MG7720 printer. I used Epson Ultra Premium Glossy Photo Paper for my photos and Neehah Bright White Paper for my journaling.
If you are looking for additional ideas I love how Amy set up her journaling pages. Check that out here.
A complete supply list can be found at the bottom of this post.
Let's dive in:
My album starts with the printable "look around" quote (
you see and download that here) so that means I had a full page on the back to work with. I looked through my photos and selected this one from Anna's soccer practice to create a home for my "this week" title card.
I cut the card down to fit onto the photo and then used
this super cool rolling date stamp to add the days. I love it for the font and for the break from the other one I use all the time. Above the "this week" card I added one of the paper die cuts from the WITL Main Kit along with a chipboard asterisk.
The next page is a calendar that I printed from iCal on my computer. I used a six hole punch to add it in and folded a portion of the page over to create a flap.
On top of the flap I considered adding a photo but instead decided to play with some of the pattern paper I had here on hand. I cut this text piece to the size of the flap and then I cut out one of the floral designs from this 1 Canoe 2 pattern paper and adhered it on top of the text pattern. I took a lot of floral photos this past week (it's that time of year here) so it felt consistent with the story I was telling to add in that organic element. And it was fun.
On top of the floral cut out I added another one of the die cut pieces from the Main Kit along with a chipboard asterisk.
Along the outside edge I added an Avery Index Tab and used a stamp from the Highs + Lows stamp set (no longer available at this time).
On the back of the calendar I adhered a "reason why/we are" page. In my journaling here I established all of our ages with a short review of our week and what my overwhelming feeling was at the end of the week. Sometimes I do this kind of page in advance and set an intention for the album or a reason why. This time I decided to do it at the end and focus a bit more on who we are and my feelings at the end of the week. Either way works.
At the top of that page I added a heart chipboard from the Chipboard Bundle.
The next step in my process was to print 2 enlarged photos for each day that are the size of the page protectors. These are 6.75 inch x 8.25 inch. I used the Week In The Life™ 2019 6x8 Layered Templates Vol 6 on top of one photo for each day. You can check out a post on how to work with those layered templates here. I'll be adding 3x4 photos and embellishments this weekend.
I adhered those two page protector sized photos back to back and used the 6 hole punch to be able to add it to my album.
As I mentioned above I decided to keep all my journaling together and simply copy and paste from my blog posts. This year I decided to make these pages 6x8 in order to slip them into the 6x8 page protectors. I did need to add a few additional full page page protectors on a couple days to accommodate more journaling. You can also switch the sizes between the enlarged photos and the journaling pages if that works better for you (meaning make the pages with your journaling the size of the page protectors).
In my process video you'll hear me talk about this process and my belief in literally starting with the story. To me this means that I deal with my words first and I don't leave them until the end of the process. This allows me to make sure that I'm not sacrificing the words for anything else - I am giving them their home first and making everything else fit around them.
I used the 4x6 cards from the Main Kit as a title for each of the first pages of my joruanling. I trimmed them right at the bottom line, keeping the date and good day/bad day sub head.
Monday happens to include 4 pages of journaling (two pages front and back in page protectors). Inside the words spread I added the 3x8 page protector and the food paper pad from the Main Kit.
On the back of each of those daily 3x8's I'm planning to add a 3x8 photo of food or drink.
Again, not all my days will have this many pages of journaling but this is the basic format I'm following as I'm bringing it all together. After my journaling I have the 4-pocket 4x6 page protector ready for my additional photos.
So that's where I'm at right now! I'll share more as I make additional progress.
