I completely forgot to mention and link to Terri's blog post (and series of photographs) of desks and tables at which writers, artists, and editors work. Here's mine

Dark Delicacies signing Saturday April 2

I'll be in the LA area for a few days late March-April 3rd and will be signing books --TEETH should just be available, plus Haunted Legends, and whatever else is available. Alas, only one contributor lives in the area but she'll be on the east coast that weekend.

When I get more info I'll add it. And hopefully DD will create an event on their fb page (or I will)

A break from things I must read

I have a little time before I have to begin reading for The Best Horror of the Year, volume four, so have been picking through books I missed or that I bought (yes, Virginia, even I occasionally buy books--usually art/photography books)and haven't had the presence of mind to look through and/or read.

I just picked up Rare:Portraits of America's Endangered Species by Joel Sartore. The portraits are of animals and plants ranging from the Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbit (the next to last was Bryn, who was photographed a few months before she died in 2008. The last of the breed, another female, died a few months later)to the Salt Creek Tiger Beetle (194 remain), the California Condor, and the Red Wolf. I read the first essay and started crying. I think this will have to be something I read in small doses.

So, on to something else. Maybe I'll return to The Gun by C.J. Chivers, about the AK-47. That'll be cheery.

More about Melissa Mia Hall's death

This is way worse than I thought when I learned that Melissa died of a heart attack this past Friday. I hadn't realized that she was suffering various health problems and that she couldn't afford to see a doctor. If she had gone to the doctor with her severe back pain, it's at least possible that a heart attack would have been suspected immediately.

The Least Among Us. This just about breaks my heart.

Help Leslie Howle get a new puppy

You may have heard that my friend Leslie Howle's little dog Luke recently passed away. Leslie's friends know of the deep bond that existed between her and Lukey. Les has been bereft without him. With encouragement from several friends, Les has started to think about adopting another pup, but she's in no position to do so as she's still paying off the vet bill for Luke's final visit to the Emergency vet.

No pressure whatsoever, but, if you'd like to help out, we've arranged for a Paypal account that goes directly to Leslie for her puppy fund.

We had to do some serious pleading and arm-twisting to get Leslie to set up this account. Anyone who knows Les, knows that she's always a giver and never a taker. She's housed, fed and chauffeured so many people in our writing community, and she's one of the key organizers behind Clarion West Writers Workshop, just to name a couple of her ongoing contributions.

We feel good about giving her a bit of help at a rather dark time. Leslie would not want anyone to contribute who felt the slightest reluctance, so please do as you wish. I just wanted to let you know that this exists.

The Paypal address for the fund is:

lespup@gmail.com

Any amount will help. If you don't do online payments, checks can be mailed to:

movies

This evening I watched Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, which was fascinating. It was recommended to me a month or so ago (here, I think). Documentary about a recent year in the life of comedienne Joan Rivers. Interesting that she has always thought of herself as an actress rather than a comedienne and seems bitter that she's never been appreciated that way.

Scoop made by Woody Allen, who also plays this extremely annoying character that I constantly wanted to kick and tell to shut up. Scarlett Johansson, Ian McShane, and Hugh Jackman. McShane plays dead reporter who whispers (figuratively) his suspicions about the serial killer running around London to Johansson, who plays a college student reporter. Hugh Jackman, scion of a rich and powerful family is the suspect. Stooooopid and utterly unbelievable, although it's still a joy to watch McShane and Jackman do anything.

Despicable Me, also recommended. And thank you whoever did. See, I thought it was a live action movie and it sounded awful from the very little I heard about it. Nah. It's a wonderful animation --funny, clever, good to look at, and moving. So why on earth was it not nominated for the Oscar in feature animation???? It should have been.
