The Best Nature Series Ever
Judging from this marvelous clip about the Honey Badger, I agree totally. It almost makes me want to have cable so I can actually watch my tv for something other than DVDs (almost, but not quite) Randall's Wild Wild World of Animals

The Grand Conversation on ebooks
I'm afraid that what I've got to say is pretty wimpy. I've been in book publishing long enough to know that predicting its future is not something I could ever do. I'm assuming that others taking part in the conversation will be surer of themselves than I am on the subject.

last movie of the weekend
I watched My First Mister on DVD and it was completely different from what I thought it was going to be about. Not only that, but I rented it not realizing it had Albert Brooks in it. Now I cannot stand watching Brooks in most of the movies I've seen him in (Broadcast News is one off the top of my head) so if I'd realized he was in the movie it wouldn't have been in my queue. Which would have been a pity, because Brooks is not his usual asshole persona, but instead a self-contained, troubled, middle-aged man.
It's about a self-destructive (but not TOO self-destructive) teenage girl (Leelee Sobieski)who--with her tattoos and piercings galore-- tries to find a job so she can move out of her mother and stepfather's house. She goes to a local mall where she gets thrown out of a bunch of places and after some back and forth, Brooks says he might consider hiring her if she removes most of the piercings, as she scares the customers in his high end clothing store.
Their complex relationship slowly unfolds into something interesting and I admit I was in tears by the end. Carol Kane plays the girl's mother; John Goodman her father (although he's barely in the movie). Directed by Christine Lahti.

Reagan's legacy
There's been a lot of talk on the news about Ronald Reagan. Here's an interesting summing up of Ronald Reagan's Legacy.

movie watching
Rough Magic a totally charming 1995 movie set in the 50s, about magic, money, mystery, mysticism, and love. With Russell Crowe as a guy down in Mexico hired by a rich jerk to track down his fiance, who witnessed a murder. Bridget Fonda as a magician's assistant with more power than meets the eye. Jim Broadbent as a conman/searcher for an elixir of power and money. The rich asshole is not as actor I've ever seen before, D.W. Moffett. I really liked Bridget Fonda in this and am disappointed to see she disappeared from acting after 2002.
Also saw Let Me In, the American version of Let the Right One In and it was fine but there was absolutely no reason to remake an already fine film. (I know I know-most Americans won't go see a subtitled movie)...

And on the subject of Noir (how synchronistic)
I missed this piece on IO9 about How to Save Noir Fiction from Irrelevance. I truly hope that readers feel that Supernatural Noir does the sub-genre justice, as I am a lover of noir movies and fiction.
