“Israel can now do what it wants. There are no red lines.”
Following the recent release of the Turkish edition of my book, The Palestine Laboratory, here’s my interview with the newspaper, Arti Gercek:
The relationship between Turkey and Israel has long been dysfunctional. From time to time, it was seen that being friends and supporting each other was mutually beneficial. Israel often had a large number of intelligence presences in Istanbul. Turkey also often gave intelligence to Israel to protect Israeli citizens who are on vacation or working in their own country. There was also an arms relationship between the two countries. There has been an interaction between both countries for the Kurds. In fact, this interaction is an interesting form of relationship, because on the one hand Israel has often supported elements of the general Kurdish struggle, especially in the last decade. But it also supported Turkey’s actions against the Kurds. Therefore, I think that the Israel-Turkey relationship is dysfunctional, but it is similar to many other dysfunctional relations that Israel has.

“Israel is off the leash completely”
More than 12 months of horrors in the Middle East.
Here’s my interview with Junkee about the current state of play:
An unspoken goal, which, sadly, in my view, and tragically, has been achieved, is making Gaza unlivable. Obviously, there are still huge amounts of Palestinians living in Gaza, but vast parts of Gaza have been destroyed. Infrastructure has been broken. We don’t even know the death toll. The Lancet has suggested over 160,000. No one really knows because, of course, there’s been no time or ability to check huge amounts of people remaining under the rubble. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been forced out. A long term goal of Israel has always been to have an Israeli Jewish state with as few Palestinians as possible. And that was never going to be achieved with one war or by one attack.
