Concerning Colorado and the First Amendment
When tragedy strikes, emotions run high. So does opportunity. When you talk about opportunity, does Texas Republican Louis Gohmert come to mind? Well, it should. He was one of the first (if not the first) from Capitol Hill to speak up on the tragedy in Colorado where over 70 people were wounded and 12 killed during a midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. Yes, he hit all the talking points his staff put together for him. Attack on religion. Founding fathers’ intentions. Gun control. All...

Stranger on a Train XXI
Heading home, and I’ve got 21 for this entry; so Double Down if you can.
Yesterday was a day I want to put behind me, but I admit it was a crossroad kind of day. Revelations. Lapses of reason. Manning up. And as pissy as I felt, I find out I have a friend — you know, one of those best kinds — facing a shut storm that reduced my day to just a chocolate drizzle. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it?
Something tells me you’re reading this, bro. Don’t go stealth on me. You were there for me. My tur...

Stranger on a Train XX
I don’t believe in coincidence.
I do believe in God.
And this morning, I got a talking to through the radio…
And when you wake up in the morning
With your head on fire
And your eyes too bloody to see
Go on and cry in your coffee
But don’t come bitchin’ to me
Because you had to be a big shot, didn’t ya
You had to open up your mouth
You had to be a big shot, didn’t ya,
All your friends were so knocked out
You had to have the last word, last night
You know what everything’s about
You had to have a white hot s...

Being Kenneth Branagh: 11 Tips on Filming a Book Trailer (Part Four)
And here we are — the final part of the mini-series blogpost! (See? Aren’t you glad I broke this up into segments?)
Now as I mentioned, I have saved the best tip for last; but before getting to what I believe is the most imperative thing you can do in planning out a book trailer, let’s quickly recap those previous 10 tips from Parts 1-4:
Know what you’re shooting.
You’re shooting a book trailer, the emphasis on trailer. Not book. You don’t have to understand the process, but take time to underst...

A Triple B: Blogworld and BEA in the Big Apple!
May was a blur. It dawned on me yesterday morning that since the middle of April I have been going full tilt. Starting a new job, a book trailer, visiting relatives, two book events, and the premiere of The Janus Affair only highlights the madness that was May. This week marks the end of a powerhouse of promotion and networking, and it seems only right that Pip and I end our power play in the city that never sleeps — New York.
What makes this trip an epic ending for our Janus Affair launch is...

Being Kenneth Branagh: 11 Tips on Filming A Book Trailer (Part Three)
So, two weeks ago, I started this mini-series of a blogpost. Honestly, I thought I could encapsulate everything I wanted to say about this experience in about 1000 words, maybe 2000 if I was feeling eloquent.
Yeah…um…Part Four will drop next week and wrap everything up. I promise.
No. Seriously.
Stop laughing.
The thing is this blogpost is a lot like the book trailer itself (which, if you look up in the right-hand corner of the blog, you will see it there…). This is the biggest blogpost I think I...

Being Kenneth Branagh: 11 Tips on Filming a Book Trailer (Part Two)
Two days before previewing the trailer at Balticon 46, I began a series on what has been my life for the past seven weeks: The Janus Affair book trailer. While there has already been a lot invested into this projectand critics dismiss book trailers as trendy gimmicks that hardly sell books, I truly believe that it has been a worthwhile and educational ride.
The crowd reaction this weekend to the preview was payback, indeed.
But what is it about book trailers that make authors, agents, and publi...

Being Kenneth Branagh: 11 Tips on Filming a Book Trailer (Part One)
With The Avengers topping the box office for the month of May, it’s easy to forget the long road paved for Joss Whedon. As I mentioned in a previous blog, this title was a real gamble for Marvel Studios as there has never been a film hyped for four years, using other films to — more or less — ride shotgun for each other, one film feeding into another to build up to this superhero epic. So with S.H.I.E.L.D. bringing it hard to the movies, it can be easy to overlook some of the previous milesto...

The Janus Affair: A Sneak Peek and a Balticon Bash!
Hey, everyone!
Well, here we are — the week it all happens! Balticon!
Before I forget, I do want to give you all a little something to enjoy, audio-wise…
James Langton, you might recall, gave his voice to us for Harper Audio’s kicking production of Phoenix Rising: A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel. He’s back for The Janus Affair, and we could not be happier about it. Harper Audio gave us this preview for our podcast (you DO know about the steampunk podcast anthology Pip and I do, right?),...

Stranger on a Train XIX
Heading home…finally.
Yeah, today was rough. I’m snapping back from the weekend at the Steampunk World’s Fair. It was beastly getting up there, but coming home was a snap. Because of that cluster-fuck journey through traffic hell, I’m planning an EARLY departure for Balticon. It torques me slightly that I’ve got to work Thursday night, but it’s a job. I’d rather have a minor inconvenience than unemployment, and this job’s keeping everyone sane…well, everyone but me seeing as I’ve got two ACX ti...
