Book Expo 2011 -- I couldn't help myself -- I LOVE BOOKS!!!
BookExpo America (BEA) is the largest publishing event in North America—it showcases what's new and exciting in the world of books. I couldn't believe that number of authors on site, hurriedly signing and giving away their new books.
Often we could quickly step into line to receive a copy but most often the line-ups were as long as a city block! I tried to be selective and only take the books that I intended to read but it was a frenzy. When we got back to the hotel at the end of the day I took time to spread the some fourteen or fifteen books I had collected across my bed and examine them.
I just quickly googled the number of books published per day and in the US alone the magic number was 800 although I think the worldwide number is more like 7000 books daily. As a result, I as an author pay particular attention to what draws people to certain books. It has become a common occurrence for me to check out which book covers catch my eye -- immediately! I pay attention to which books giveaways attracted the longest line ups? Hmmm ... Was the length of the line due to the calibre and status of the author or the result of the publishers well place marketing dollars at work?
I seriously felt like it was Christmas -- I was surrounded by colorful unreleased books -- all crisp with unbroken spines.
Interestingly, only one of the books was non-fiction. Two were autobiographies. The rest fell into some form of fiction for the most part.
I am looking for some feedback! What book covers catch your eye? Is there a certain color, design, or imagery that your prefer? Your thoughts -- please....

The New York BEA Show (Book Expo America) 2011
I went to my first BEA this year. Aside from being happy about any excuse to make my way to New York ... this was a great trip! I can't wait until next year!
I flew Porter Airline for the first time out of Toronto Island. The airport has easy access, it's not overcrowded, you can relax and help yourself to lattes and shnocks (snacks) while you wait ... and you even get a free ferry ride ... although it's only about 400 feet to the island you are on the water and to me that screams relax, vacation, woo hoo I am on my way to New York! It was absolutely perfect!!!
I stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel! A great classy hotel in mid-town Manhattan easily walking distance to the Theatre district, Times Square, great restaurants, great bars and great people!
The Expo was at the Javits Center, a great central venue. I was warned to bring comfortable shoes -- I actually thought I had -- but I walked so much I thought my feet would fall off.
So here is my take!
It was amazing to meet fellow authors -- people that I had so much in common with.
We volunteered at IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) for an hour one day and met some very interesting publishers -- charismatic and dynamic! Plus the staff at IBPA were wonderful!
As I mentioned, this was my first BEA and thus it was a fact finding mission.
I am carefully weeding through all of the brochures I collected -- there are some exciting prospects in the future!!!

Questions and Answers with Lorii Myers
"Are there any additional comments you want to make about you and the focus of your book?
I really don't want the book's focus to be about credentials. It is about attitude -- the right attitude.
My education opened the door for me originally but over the years I branched out in so many ways. I see education as a springboard, a way to open the door but the rest is up to you. I think you need to invest in yourself and continue to learn and grow your entire life.
The focus should be having the right attitude and knowing that you can reinvent yourself. You can tap into your own sense of healthy competition and use it to learn how to play to win!"

"Is your book based on your own life in any way?
Yes! All the stories in the book are true and I have always strived to live up to my expectations. I have been very fortunate to have worked with innovative and entrepreneurial mentors.
How do you believe you'd react if you received an unfavorable review of your book either on air or in print?
Quite honestly I think that unfavorable reviews often attract more attention than good ones! That being said, like anyone, I would prefer a good review ... of course. Yet I can't imagine that everyone will love my book as much as I do. That would be way too easy!"

"What ONE question do you most often get asked when people meet you or learn about what you do?
From people that know me, the number one question is:
Where do you find the time to write?
From people that don't know me:
I love the cover – who is that guy?
After being asked this repeatedly, I now just answer Steve, and they go - oh!!!"

"What three to five things do you want the media to know about you?
This is my mantra from the book:
I thrive on making things happen, and once I'm on board, the challenge is mine.
I am not deterred when I make a bad play; I just regroup and keep on going.
Ultimately, I know that a bad play simply means that I still have some work to do.
AND...
This is my slogan from the book:
The "right attitude is everything!""

"Success is the self-fulfillment of dreams. This equates to you defining what success means to you. Then having the guts to go for it!
Success means different things to different people. Take time to define what success means to you. Be clear. It's easier to get behind something that is really important to you.
Remember -- No one can take the shot for you!"

"Keep learning. Refer to the 19th hole: Educated Optimism
I coined the phrase educated optimism. It deals with the value of continuing to learn throughout your life. Learn about what you are interested in or passionate about and share that knowledge. When you push yourself to learn you are taking time to invest in yourself. Knowledge renders you interesting and lets you look forward with confidence."
