How do People Play TRPGS Around the World?

Today I stumbled across this fascinating YouTube channel called Don’t Stop Thinking which has a series of videos talking to gamers from around the world about how they play D&D (and some other RPGs) around the world. The playlist includes discussions with gamers from South Africa, Italy, Malaysia, Germany, Taiwan, and of course Japan. Here is the Japanese Tabletop Role-Playing Games video from the playlist, and actually this the first of a two-part video, so make sure you watch both parts!

An Eastern Western : Shintaro the Samurai

In 1962, Shinichi Nishimura, a TV Japanese producer, decided to create a Japanese TV series which mimicked the American westerns which were still super-popular at the time on TV and Film in the USA. With this in mind, he created a series called Onmitsu Kenshi (隠密剣士, “Spy Swordsman”) which was about a wandering government agent operating in the Northern reaches of Japan during the Edo Period. The main character, Akikusa Shintarō, was effectively a Japanese Texas Ranger, who defended the weak and...

American comic book artist legend Wally Wood created a set of 22 panel layouts that he used as his go-to when he needed inspiration while drawing his comics. Study the Masters of Manga with Manben!

Today, one of the manga greats, Takao Saito (creator of Golgo-13) sadly passed away, and while reading the outpouring of comments about his death on social media, I came across an interview he did for an NHK series called Manben which is about conversations with manga creators.

Don’t worry, it’s subtitled in English.

Curious as to what Manben was, I kept digging and learned that it was an NHK TV show where the (many) award winning manga genius Naoki Urasawa (20th Century Boys, Billy Bat...
