I can not get over the character of the Darkling. And not even the fact I thought he was sexy as all hell, but he was actually a very complex, well written character. The balance of power hungry/ frustrated by his own desire was so heavy and amazing. Despi
Glad you liked the Darkling! (But I have to say, I think YA is loaded with complex characters— Melina Marchetta’s Froi, Elizabeth Wein’s Queenie, and Holly Black’s Lila just came right to mind, but there are plenty more.)
Fictional influences for the Darkling… Flagg, Raistlin, David Bowie’s Goblin King, Kiefer Sutherland as David in Lost Boys, maybe a little Lestat in there? He’s pretty much every dark prince, rogue wizard, or dangerous sort I was ever drawn to and wanted more of.

I find this to be kind of awesome. And since it led you to Shadow and Bone, I’m finding it doubly awesome.

I gladly accept all declarations of love! (And gifts of cake.)
Thank you

women in literature and folklore: genya
Looking at Genya in her white and gold kefta, I wasn’t quite convinced. I’d lived at Keramzin for most of my life, but I’d never felt I belonged there. And even after a year, the same had been true for the King’s Army. The only place I’d ever felt I belonged was with Mal, and even that hadn’t lasted. For all her beauty, maybe Genya and I weren’t so different after all.”
Soooo stunning.
And makes me want to dye my hair.
(I’ll restrain myself. My attempts to go red have gone… poorly.)
