Leigh Bardugo's Blog, page 784

So I know authors don't have much say in casting, but could you maybe um, put an anonymous note under the casting director's door that says "Sean O'Pry for Darkling!" lmao Or maybe just mention it in passing..

Ha! I don’t know that I’ll have any say at all. But from what I understand, casting directors do sometimes look at fan choices. That’s how the HBO peeps found Jason Momoa for Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. (And a splendid job by all, I say.)

Just as a note, my AskBox is FULL OF HILARITY right now due to an earlier reblog. No, I don’t see the Darkling with facial hair, but if that’s how a reader sees him I’m still gonna reblog. For all I know, there’s someone out there who pictures the Darkling as Will Ferrell. Ain’t my job to judge.

Girls always bitch about this, sure, but it’s not like it’s any better for guys. You think I wanna be some ultra macho beefcake?
There’s a reason I always pick female character models in video games.

Lol. That second drawing.

omg

Wait… wait…Do people actually ship Genya and the King? Because that wigs me out a lot more than Malarkling. LOL. “Malarkling.”

NEW Siege and Storm Teaser!

Thanks again for making the cover reveal so much fun! You guys voted for a Genya snippet, so…

Genya laid her hand over mine. “You did what you had to do, Alina.”

I let out a harsh bark of laughter and yanked my hand away. “Is that what the Darkling tells you, Genya? Does that make it easier?”

“Not really, no.” She looked down at her lap, pleating and unpleating the folds of her kefta. “He freed me, Alina,” she said. “What am I supposed to do? Run back to the palace? Back to the King?” She gave a fierce shake of her head. “No. I made my choice.”

Hello :) as an aspiring writer, I was just curious as to what you do to get your motivation back, when it seems to fizz out while you write sometimes?

Hello, aspiring writer!

Okay, some ways to motivate:

1. I don’t write linearly. I may start out that way, but if I get stuck or bogged down in a scene, I move on to something I AM excited about.

2. Deadlines. Even if you’re making them for yourself, they can be really helpful. The important thing is to keep expectations realistic so you don’t set yourself up for failure.

3. Music. When I’ve lost the emotional thread, sometimes the right song can get me back where I need to be.

4. Break your routine. Change POV. Write something you know doesn’t belong in the WIP.

5. Give yourself a day off. Watch a really good movie. Read something wonderful. And don’t feel guilty about it. Really set that time aside.

6. Remember that we ALL feel like it’s a slog sometimes. That’s because—even if writing is the very best job in the world (and I tend to think it is)—it’s still a job. That means there will be good days and bad days and, oh yes indeed, the days you feel like an uninspired lump.

Don’t lose faith. Don’t give up. Do be kind to yourself.

Good luck!

“Do you fear me, Alina?”

“That’s what you want, isn’t it?”

The Darkling shrugged. “Fear is a powerful ally,” he said. “And loyal.”
