Two weeks we’d been in Cofton, and I was still getting lost. The town lay inland, west of the Novyi Zem coast, miles from the harbor where we’d landed. Soon we would go farther, deep into the wilds of the Zemeni frontier. Maybe then we’d begin to feel safe. - Siege and Storm.

Eep! So cool to see someone approach this part of the story

I am a doll, I am a servant. Because I am a pretty thing and a soldier at the same time.

Love these. And also bringing back hilarious memories of Anthony Rapp INSISTING on the rules being followed to the letter during the Authors’ House Cup at Leakycon. He is wonderfully Hufflepuff to the core.

I was on the Slytherin team with Barry Lyga and Amber Benson. We won. Natch.

I'm so obsessed with Genya, she's an amazing character and one of my favorites. I think she is so intense and phisically I imagined her a bit like Jessica Chastain... i would like to know what was your inspiration for her story. :)

Hooray! So glad to hear it. (And I love Jessica Chastain. Have you seen  her in that black & gold McQueen gown? Can you ship a woman and a dress because I kind of do.)

The love for Genya in the tag and the asks has meant a lot to me. She was inspired by a few things:

1. My time as a makeup artist. I grew up in Los Angeles and I worked in Hollywood. I’m keenly aware of the power that beauty holds, and what it can or can’t do for you. Genya is in many ways the embodiment of that.

2. The archetype of the fairygodmother/sassy best friend. We see this a lot in YA, a kind of guide character who grants makeovers and introduces the heroine to the new world she’s encountering. But what does it cost someone to occupy that role? At first glance, Genya is that dream guide—gorgeous, glib, wise. But there’s a lot more to her than that and I hope it comes through in the story.

And yes, you will see more of her in Ruin and Rising :)
