John Ford nodded at the bartender as he breezed on down the hall.
Fucker, Ford thought. Extorting me for money because he has to come in on his night off.
Ford slammed his office door shut.
Frank Bolan was missing in action. Ford tried calling him, but he was sent to a full voicemail box every time.
“Fucker,” Ford said. He sat in his rolling chair and pulled himself up to his desk.
The cameras worked just fine tonight. He hoped to get some prime footage, but it was a weeknight so he tempered his hopes.
Plus some of the regulars had seen the cops here the day before. They weren’t in tonight.
“Fuckers. They’re all fuckers.”
Ford didn’t care who the dead bitch was or that she spent her final hours fucking Bolan. She was an idiot for letting Frank put his frank in her.
“Fuck!” he exclaimed.
The sheriff said he didn’t care about Ford’s little side hustle, but Ford didn’t trust cops. Never have. Cops were shit just like everyone else. The sheriff and his limp-dick deputy would be back once the ink on the warrant dried. Then, Ford would be screwed.
“Can’t put any pressure on Williams,” he said, talking through his misery. “Deputy Dipshit?”
Ford didn’t want to deal with bribing the police in addition to his blackmail game. It’d be one more level added to a house of cards.
“I need to get back in control. How?”
The cops were his most pressing concern right now. How would he handle them?

Carve: Teaser
D really wished he was armed. He was licensed to carry.
Why didn’t I?
Because you’re supposed to be on vacation, Leigh’s voice in his head told him. She liked to pop in from time to time to give him perspective. More often than not, she voiced the obvious.
D slowed.
The figure kept walking.
Get out of here. This time that was his mental voice. It sounded different than his gut and usually ran counter to whatever his instincts warned him against. This time the voices melded in perfect synchronicity.
“Shit,” he breathed.
D cut across to the figure’s street as swiftly and silently as he could. D blessed his sneakers.
The figure was two blocks ahead. They turned into one of the unlit houses and went up the side to the rear. They didn’t pause. They knew where they were going.
A lot of moonlight strolls tonight, D thought, relaxing his fists. He felt like he had the town to himself again, shadows included. He nearly felt at home.
Let it go, he told himself. This town’s secrets aren’t yours.
But they’re snaking their way towards you. D wasn’t sure who that voice belonged to. His rabid imagination chalked it up to the universe letting him know that there was no rest for the wicked or him. Bad boogeymen always had to be poked and riled out of their shadowy lairs.
He couldn’t shake the feeling even when he slipped back into bed with his wife.
