Angel and Iron Fist Commissions WIP nearly done!

Soooooo close to having this done. I just need to fill in blacks and do some detailing in the bottom right corner. I probably would have just finished it before scanning this time, but I wanted to show this step by step and after the figures are inked in, that's a pretty big step.

Filling black areas and shadows is actually more time consuming than you'd think. But it's a great thing to do when your winding down after a day's work. It doesn't take much creative thought and you can still be productive. I think about just 30-40 min. will have this thing done!

Angel Iron Fist Commission WIP - 416

Everything kind of has a gray "pattern" look to it here and you don't get a good sense of depth. As soon as the blacks are dropped in you'll see how much weight there is on the page and the background will "lighten" up in contrast.

Jean Grey Colored.....

Here's the Marvel Girl Sketch I did on a blank X-Men cover, also colored up by Simon Gough. I'm just waiting for Simon to stop answering my emails because I keep him too busy as it is. But sure enough he's a coloring machine!

One of my favorites that he's colored for me!

Here is the original black and white sketch:

Angel and Iron Fist Cont...

Again, here is the Angel and Iron Fist commission with a little more work done on it. I try to do a little each day, and I'm really getting near the end. I have Iron Fist here inked except to fill in the blacks.

For a piece that is a nicer "cover" quality piece I usually do all that with brush and a nice glossy black ink that looks much better on the original than using felt tip pens or markers. Considering I'll be working with a liquid that can smear if I'm not careful, then I'd rather leave the majority of my blacks till the end when I can just work from the top down and not have to go over wet areas as I ink.

If I'm planning on using a brush anyway, I would typically leave all the rendering or "feathering" to do with the brush. However that is more time consuming and for short strokes a pen works well enough. For Angels wings though I will be using a brush since I want those to look softer and more organic than anything else on the page.

Zartan Colors...

I've gone on and on before how much I dig this character, so I won't belabor it again. Here are some great colors done by Simon Gough, my commission partner in crime. I think this is one of my favorite drawings of Zartan I've done since working on GI JOE.

Zartan Colors - 413

I especially like how well Simon adds a sense of mood to the piece. His textures on the bricks, the modeling on the hood are fantastic. The color choices to make it like a night time scene in the back ground is all him.  You can see compared to the line art how much he adds to the piece.

Jinx....

Quick sketch done inside one of my Snake Eyes sketchbooks. Don't have much time for lengthy posts at the moment. If you couldn't tell by the lack of posts, I think I'm seriously busier now than I have ever been in my life.

I've said that a few times before...and that was before I knew what this was like. Good night....

Snow Job colors...

I recently did this Snow Job sketch at the Canadian Joe Con. After I posted the line art Sean Ellery asked for the  drawing to color up, and as always he nailed it. I've known Sean from online conversations for a couple years now. He does this comic coloring as a side hobby. He really nailed the cold atmosphere here.

Snow Job Colors - 411

When I'm just doing the line art, I typically picture what it could look like colored up. In this case the colors really made it feel colder and certainly better than I expected!

Angel and Iron Fist Commission Cont....

Next little bit inked on this commission. Coming along. Mostly just texturing the foreground water tower and working out the structure. Most of that area on the bottom will be filled in black, but I generally leave filling in the black areas to the end.

Crazy Cat Lady...Bleez and Dex Starr

I wanted to share some colors on a con commission I did. I've been reading Green Lantern since Geoff Johns took over, so I was really into the build up of the various colored lanterns. I fell off around Blackest night with my whole aversion to Zombies. I wasn't that interested. I've since picked up the New Guardians Green Lantern book and really enjoy it.

I think the addition of the various colored lantern corps was a fantastic rejuvenation to the property and really gave us some great characters out of it. While I like the concept of the red lanterns, they aren't my favorite, but Dex Starr the Red Lantern cat is a pretty cool character. He's basically this tiny blue cat filled with eternal rage. I wonder what makes him so angry. Personally, I think it's the endless you tube videos of cats running into walls, falling off couches or looking drunk after a visit to the vet. It slanders his race. I bet that's it.

Snake Eyes 16 Cover colors...

Here once again, Simon Gough handles the colors on this cover. The thing about Zartan is that he's had many variations of basically the same costume/uniform? I wasn't particularly exactly depicting one of them, so Simon got to pick and choose how he'd color it.

Sometimes I go for the really busy, detailed covers. But in situations like this, I think it works better with a minimum background or nothing at all so you focus on the intensity of the fight.
