Three Ways to Nail Your Presentation’s BIG IDEA

If you do one-to-many selling… either from the platform, via webinar, or in any other forum… you absolutely need to nail down this key point:


Your presentation MUST center around one BIG IDEA.


There are multiple excellent reasons for this, not the least of which is that it ensures clarity on your own part when designing the presentation as to what core message you want to convey. But an equally important benefit to having a central BIG IDEA is that it provides vital clarity to members of the audience as well. In addition, good presentation architecture “plants” a big idea at the start and reconnects to it at the end.


Here are a few ideas to help you properly nail your own BIG IDEA:



EXCLUDE – It’s okay for your presentation to include a lot of facts, features, benefits, promises, etc., but for THE Big Idea you must be a “master of exclusion”, setting aside much of this and boiling it all down to something between one word and one sentence. For example, my entire Renegade Millionaire pitch is about: autonomy. The entire Magnetic Marketing pitch is about: attraction, not pursuit. The Sleep Number bed pitch is about: the sleep number.
BOLD STATEMENT – Years ago, my very successful Gold By The Inch idea was ‘weekend wealth’, which I stated as: Turn $399 Into $3,990 Every Weekend. Another successful control of mine was: Make Big Money In Big Chunks. One of the most successful – and legally troubled – in weight loss was Gary Halbert’s: Burn Off Body Fat Hour By Hour – Even When You Sleep.
TRIGGER EMOTION – You can’t go wrong when you grab ‘em by the throat and make them scream. There’s real power in gut wrenching ideas linked to emotions. For instance, the very successful “End of America” campaign is based on ALARM. The famous “How to Win Friends and Influence People” book played on the universal desire for POPULARITY. And the hit song, “Take this Job and Shove It” strikes just the right chord with widespread RESENTMENT towards the boss.

Happy St. Pat’s Day from Dan Kennedy

As you know, there is the legend of St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland, and I have a few things to say today about snakes.


It’s a land of mystery, Ireland, what with the wee people up to all their mischief and some good, thunder being leprechauns bowling in the sky, angels lookin’ after us, haunted castles, and the like. The Emerald Isle is a magical place. Romantic, poetic, lyrical. Business isn’t. Leprechauns don’t show up at night to do the leftover work. Angels don’t break our falls. Entrepreneurs are not the heroes in poetry or song.


So, back to the snakes. Everybody’s got ‘em. In their companies and businesses, in their selling, marketing and customer service practices, in their personal behaviors. In their heads. Ross Perot’s advice was sound: if you spot a snake in the building, don’t organize a committee to discuss snakes, don’t order a research study about snakes, don’t debate a snake’s rights with an animal ethicist. Grab a club and beat the damn thing to death.


People think of me as a ‘marketing guy’, but actually, much of my life has been about driving snakes out more than bringing customers in. In part, because the snakes are often in the way, in the doorway. Snakes can be poor attitudes and thinking or ignorance about money; delusions about what really works in advertising and marketing – from old arguments about image vs. direct-response, short v. long copy to ‘new metrics’ in ‘new’ media; non-compliant, inept or outright thieving employees; tolerated theft of your time, productivity and energy; timidity about seeking outsized success, about exerting your sovereignty over one ‘n all, about closing sales, about premium prices. There are a lot of different species, sizes and colors of snakes. If you go look at my entire series of No B.S. books, you’ll see each one addresses a different kind of snake loose in your building.

The Four Keys to Creating Big Breakthroughs

I’ve been at this for 40 years, guiding entrepreneurs, sales professionals and others to exceptional levels of business, financial and personal achievement.


Based on my experience and my up-close and personal work with an ever-growing ‘fraternity’ of first generation, from-scratch millionaires, multi-millionaires and 7-figure income earners, I’ve discovered a few things about big breakthroughs.


We are operating in a challenging economic environment and an even more challenging attitudinal environment. However, I built my first businesses in the midst of a severe recession. In fact, I’ve been through several. Here are two things I’ve learned:


1) All disruption and trauma in the marketplace births new opportunity, and those on the alert for it and who act on it can enjoy incredible experiences and success. Historically, the speed of wealth creation has always been fastest during recovery from recession.


2) These conditions make it all that more important to set out to do big and bold things and to connect with others of that mind-set, so attending things such as Fast Implementation Bootcamp, your local GKIC chapter meetings, and other events will improve your experiences.


What makes people experience phenomenal growth at times like these?


One of the keys is definitely speed. Without speed, you can’t gain momentum. Using speed marketing strategies such as creating systems and identifying opportunities for using them will help put you on the fast-track.


Every entrepreneur needs to be on constant alert for, searching for, trying to find ways to accelerate the pace of making things happen. You have to be alert all the time, with your subconscious mind conditioned to run everything heard against a master-list of everything going on in your business and life, to ring a bell when something’s said that might be used. Because one nugget is sometimes all you need to make yourself fabulously rich.


Breaking free of the work-money link is another factor. As long as you are stuck trading hours for dollars, you’ll have a cap on what you can earn. One of the best ways I know to break free of this is through Info-marketing. You can create income fast. It can create predictable, consistent income even when you aren’t able to work. And it allows you to focus on creating exactly what you want rather than on where your next customer is coming from.


You also have to liberate yourself from the harmful thoughts and beliefs that get in your way. How you think about money…believing your “not qualified”…thinking there is nothing unique about your business…are just a few of the common harmful thoughts that may get in your way. Until you get your mind right, you always struggle to reach the level of success you want.


Last, you need strategies to take action and build momentum FAST. Putting strategies in place to boost your productivity and eliminating the psychological and actual barriers that keep you from taking action is the final key to making sure you get everything done.


Life is made up of turns and choices. What happens if you take one turn instead of another? It’s impossible to speculate what might have happened if one turn was taken versus another. Speaking To Sell…My Favorite Speaking Formula

The other day I told you there are two main ways to make money as a speaker.  The first was to get paid to speak.  I briefly talked about that method in the blog “My Second Favorite Speaking Model”.


My FAVORITE speaking model is NOT the one where I’m paid once to speak once, but rather a model where instead I speak once and get paid over and over again.


While many people prefer the first model, if you’re like me and hate spending hours in airports and night after night sleeping in hotels away from home, if I’m going to bare this kind of inconvenience…I not only want to get paid that day, but also paid by those same audience members for months and years down the line.

My Second Favorite Speaking Model

There are two primary ways I know to make money for speaking.


The first, is the model most follow and it can be incredibly effective.  When I spoke arenas at the Success events most of the people I shared the stage with were making six figures a year using this model.
