Story for the Day: The Ice Cream Cart

Every young person who hears the tinkling sounds of an ice cream cart must run toward it with joyous abandon. Every old person who hears the same sound does the same, even if only the running takes place in the mind. Bartleby still has all his faculties, and therefore the ice cream vendor is in very great danger of being attacked by a juvenile geriatric.

Story for the Day: A Closed Library

Every time a Sunday or a public holiday rolls round, I lament that the library is closed. With all my sighs and letters of deep discontent, I can never stress enough the importance and the necessity of the library being open on days when those who might not otherwise get the chance to visit the library might otherwise go. It is a perpetual problem I face, and my local library brooks all my lamentations with placating nods and commiserations of, "I know, I know, but it's a budget issue." I'd r...

Story for the Day: The Impediment

Guards have their uses: they do guard things occasionally. They simply cannot guard and stop a coup all at once:

Leaning on his spear and dozing away, completely insensible of the coup that was about to burst on him, was the guard, his cheek crushed against the staff of his spear, his mouth open, his lips drooping, his face rapt in the bliss of a sanguine sloom. He was sleeping so soundly as he stood with his back to the empty cells lining the corridor to the brig that he did not hear the boom...

Story for the Day: Houghleidh MacDunna

Houghleidh MacDunna is a legend on the seas. Born in Westren, he lived his life as a farmhand, traveling across the rambling downs, living from season to season, until the death of his mother brought him to consider another line of employment. He thought that the sea might do for him, and when he was captured by Galleisian slave traders and sold to the Sesternese, he got his wish of being at sea, being put aboard a slave galley from which he later escaped. He was freed and given command of th...

Story for the Day: A Leathal Lecture

In Damson's Distress, Danaco mentions to Damson that Bartleby once killed a man by lecturing him to death. Danaco was serious.

Danaco gave the order for those who would remain and guard the crewman’s quarters to stand at the bunks, and all those who would come with him to join the fight on deck to follow. He mounted the stairs and was met with the prospect of Bartleby standing and lecturing the drummer and the galley captain on the quarterdeck, the old man glorying in his grand sermons, t...<![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]>

Story for the Day: The Myrellenos

Myrellenos is the Lucentian Goddess of Life. According to Lucentian legend, Myrellnos comes from the realm of Mlys, the realm whence the Elves of Lough came. Lucentian's history tells that when the Elves of Lough refused to worship Myrellenos any longer, disease struck their lands, forcing them westward across the sea, where they discovered the then nearly derelict land of Old Lucentia. The Elves made themselves lords over the current residents and readopted their worship of Myrellenos, vowin...
