Pre-Release Marketing

Today's topic came by request. (This one's for you, Taurean!) A big question that comes up when you finally get that book contract is what should you do to market a book that isn't out yet. You don't have a cover to display or an official blurb to share yet. In some cases, you may not even have a set release date. So what do you do?

Make connections. Get out there in the online community and meet people. Let them know you're a writer. Share books you love. Yes, you can mention you have a book under contract. Share your excitement and celebrate with others who are in similar situations or who already have books published.

Be yourself. Let people get to know the real you. I've said so many times that I'm not afraid to embarrass myself. See my YouTube videos if you don't believe me. I cry. A lot. I cry tears of joy, and I cry when I try to express gratitude. That's me. I'm also very quirky. I have weird habits and I'm not afraid to share them. I know it's a terrible pun, but I like to be an open book on my blog.

Share tips. This is a tough industry. Your story about how you came to get a book contract might help others. Share things you learned along the way, both good things to do and things to avoid. Others will thank you for it.

Make yourself available. Find some online media that you are comfortable with and be present. I love Twitter. It's fun and quick. But find something you love and be available for people to talk to you.

Promote others. It's a two-way street. If you want bloggers and writers to help you promote your book, you need to be willing to do the same for them. Remember we are all in this together. Help as many people as you can because you're also helping the industry in the process.

Don't be shy about your book, but don't spam people either. Find a healthy balance between talking about your book and talking about everything else. Yes, you're excited and we expect you to share that excitement. But if it's all you talk about, you'll lose potential fans.

Share the good news and give back at the same time. Once you get your cover image and other things to share, do something to give back to the people who support you and help you promote. Giveaways are a great way to say thank you. And if you are on a tight budget, you can giveaway chapter or query critiques instead of gift cards or SWAG you have to mail.

I think that's a good start, but please feel free to add to my list with what you think you should do during pre-release marketing.

Monday Mishmash with a Cover Reveal!

Happy Monday! Here's my mishmash of thoughts:

LOL Looks like no sleep for Kelly.Staked by Death SWAG Giveaway  Congrats to Lisa Basso for winning the Stalked by Death SWAG pack!Amazon Prime  So my free subscription to Prime will run out at the end of the week, and I think I'm happy about it. I've gotten one to two packages a day for the last week. Someone needs to stop me.New Niece  At eleven a.m. today, my new niece, Violet, will be born. I'm so excited!Face of Death  Friday was the cover reveal for the third and final book in the Touch of Death series. I didn't post because I was promoting Catherine Stine's Ruby's Fire and didn't want to steal any spotlight from her. So, I'm sharing on my blog today instead. Having fallen at the hands of Hades, Jodi's enduring torture like she never imagined. Worse, she has to watch her Ophi friends suffer along with her--the punishment doled out by the very people she'd sentenced to life in Tartarus. Hell. This is one reunion Jodi hoped would never happen, but now she must find a way to free them all.

Except the underworld is nearly impossible to escape.

Jodi's one chance may rest in raising the human soul she killed when she drank Medusa's blood.

But splitting her human soul from her Ophi soul means living a double life: One as an Ophi experiencing unspeakable torture and the other as the human she could have been if she never came into her powers. With her two worlds colliding, Jodi will have to make the toughest decision she's faced yet.

Title: Face of Death (Touch of Death #3)Author: Kelly HashwayPublisher: Spencer Hill PressISBN:  978-1-937053-92-5Release Date: 1/7/2014Formats: Paper, e-bookGoodreads TBR: If you'd like to request an ARC, please use the reviewer form on our website.

Meet Ruby and Blane from Catherine Stine's Ruby's Fire

Today I have Ruby and Blane from Catherine Stine's Ruby's Fire with me. I know you'll love them, but first, here's a little about Ruby's Fire:

“Seventeen year-old Ruby and her little brother Thorn, have only known a life blighted by the extremist Fireseed Cult. The night Ruby is set to be claimed by one of its cruelest and oldest leaders, she makes a bid for freedom. With Thorn in tow, she stumbles into the world beyond, and finds an opportunity for a fresh start in Skull’s Wrath under the guidance of Nevada Pilgrim, a woman who may not be all she seems. Ruby's new life could bring her friendship, love, even fortune, but nothing comes without a price. Is Ruby's talent for elixirs keeping the roof over their heads, or do some of her associates have a more sinister and lucrative interest in them? Life outside a strange cult isn't without its dangers, and the experience leaves Ruby transformed and communing with the Fireseed more closely than she ever would have imagined. Stine delivers a thrilling adventure led by an exciting cast of characters, and the romance is really well handled.”   -YA’s The Word

RubySeventeen year-old Ruby’s afraid of how beautiful she is because it’s always gotten her more attention than she wants. She has wild blond hair and a halo of curly bangs. She’s a master of mixing elixirs, a skill her father taught her when they hunted cave lizards and milked out their venom. She wears a belt brimming with pouches for catching lizards and beetles. She grew up in a strange desert cult, but she never realized how dangerous it was until the night she escaped. That’s why she still needs Oblivion, a sleeping drug that she concocted, but would like to kick.
BlaneEighteen year-old Blane is the resident bodyguard at The Greening. He’s also a student there. He has massive shoulders and a chiseled face, yet the crafty glint in his hazel eyes and his spray of honey-hued freckles suggest a lighter, even playful side. He escaped East Coast sector where he lost his entire family, including his beloved dog, Cloud, in a horrific tsunami. There’s a rumor going around that his mother was a geneticist and his father was a brain surgeon back in the day, but Ruby doesn’t believe it because Blane likes to mess with her head. Blane spends a lot of time surreptitiously tracking Ruby, trying to figure her out.
Now, welcome Ruby and Blane!
Tell us, Ruby, what do you really want in life?I want to earn enough money from my elixirs to buy a big wave-colored house out in Vegas-by-the Sea. I’d save my mother from the cult, and install all of my friends there. I’d hire a special tutor for my little brother, Thorn, so he can retrieve the sentences and phrases that the elders beat out of him.
Blane?I want a good meal of northern Restavik boar. I want to play soccer. I want my dog, Cloud back. I want to be with people who bring something to the equation. (Gives Ruby a long, soulful stare) I want to be left alone.
(Ruby elbows him)Liar!
Blane, what’s your favorite color?(He glances over at Ruby, then away). Yellow, blond, like her hair.
Ruby?Blue, the color of waves. I imagine them constantly—the bluest ever. If I win a finalist spot in the Axiom contest, I’ll get to see the Pacific.
BlaneI’m going to win a finalist spot. You’ll have to contend with me. Do you think you’d be able to stand a ride on a hovercraft together?
Ruby(Slides a finger down the bridge of his nose, and says slowly, teasingly) As long as you bring something to the equation.
Thanks, Ruby and Blane!Catherine's been generous enough to offer a giveaway in addition to letting us spend time with her characters. To enter, just fill out the rafflecopter below.

A Missing Peace Street Team Sign Up

A while back, I edited a manuscript for Beth Fred. I knew immediately that Beth had something great with this book. So I wasn't surprised that not only did it land her an agent, but it also got her a book contract.

I couldn't be happier for Beth, who has become a good friend of mine. So, I've joined her Street Team, and I'm asking you to consider doing the same. The book is called A Missing Peace. Everyone who participates will get an ebook of A Missing Peace and will also be entered to win a $10 Amazon GC. Why? Because Beth is just that awesome and it's her way of saying thanks.

Here's the blurb.

Angry, seventeen-year-old, Iraqi war refugee Mirriam Yohanna hates her new life in Killeen,Texas, where the main attraction is a military base, populated with spoiled army brats like Caleb Miller.Caleb has much to be angry about himself, including Mirriam, when she turns him down flat in front of everyone. Eager for retribution, Caleb agrees to a dare that will see him take Mirriam to prom or lose even more face. But there's more to their relationship than high school hijinks. Mirriam and Caleb are bound together by more than location, and as they are forced to work closely together on a school assignment, they start to uncover an explosive story that has the potential to ruin lives – and both of their futures. One single truth changes everything and strengthens their bond. Not everyone is happy about their budding relationship. When Mirriam's family discover the affair, they decide it's time to arrange her marriage to a proper Iraqi man. Caleb must convince Mirriam that he is in it for forever – or risk losing her for good.

My daughter's having a hard time understanding Mom needs to work.German Shepherd Hound Mix  Last June we got a puppy, and we knew she was a German Shepherd mix. Yes, I just made that up. ;)That's it for me. What's on your mind today?

Romancing the R.A. Book Blitz!

Romancing the R.A. (Campus Romance #1)by Ashelyn DrakeRelease Date: 05/28/13
Summary from Goodreads: Noelle Buckman is looking forward to making a fresh start in college, one that doesn’t involve immature high school boys. The second she steps on campus for freshman orientation, she can sense the possibilities. Especially when she spots Andy, a resident advisor who’s not just hot but also thoughtful enough to open doors for a girl.
And Andy has his eye on Noelle. Even when her nerves take control and she thinks she comes off as a hillbilly with no direction, Andy can see what she’s really like and he’s more than a little interested.

But orientation is less than two full days and there’s an entire summer between Noelle and Andy. Will her attempt to romance the R.A. be as short-lived as college orientation?

(only $.99!)

***Excerpt***He’s stunned at first and doesn’t move. I start to pull away, thinking I’ve made a huge mistake, but then I feel Andy’s hand on my lower back, pulling me closer. His lips part, and he deepens the kiss.
Every inch of me is on fire. Andy’s an incredible kisser, but the position we’re in is awkward. I reach my hands up and bury my fingers in his hair, which prompts him to lift me onto his lap. Much better. Our bodies are pressed so close I can feel every inch of him. My lungs are screaming for air, but I’m not willing to give in to them. I’ve been dying to kiss Andy ever since he first smiled at me, and I’ll be damned if I’m backing away that quickly.
His hands move up my back to my hair, and he pulls my head back gently exposing my neck. His lips trail down my jaw and to the nape of my neck. I bite my lip to stifle a moan, but it manages to slip out anyway. Andy slowly eases off, opening his eyes to see my reaction. I debate pulling his lips back to mine, but for the moment I drape my arms around his shoulders and just stare into his baby blue eyes.
“Wow.”
He can say that again. “Yeah.”
“I can honestly say that’s the first time I didn’t have to make the first move.”
“And it’s the first time I ever made the first move.”
He smiles. “Then I’m honored.” He leans forward and places a single kiss on my neck. His hips rise under me, and I know exactly where he’s hoping this is going to lead. My body is screaming for his touch, but I don’t want to be thatgirl. The one who goes off to college and sleeps with the first guy she meets. As much as I want Andy, I can’t do this right now.

Deity by Jennifer Armentrout (Review)

Deity (Covenant, #3)

Summary:
History is on repeat, and things didn't go so well the last time.

Alexandria isn’t sure she’s going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she’s a goner... and so is Aiden.

If that’s not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she’s caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed… and destroyed. Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...

My thoughts:
It is so hard to review this book and not give anything away (spoiler-wise). Let me just say that I know so many people are Team Aiden, and I get why. But I love Seth. Not that I don't love Aiden, too. I do. But from the very start, I could see why Alex was drawn to Seth. So as we learn more about Seth in this book, well...I'm not sure what to say except I'm afraid of where this series is going. Will I continue to read the books? Of course! I love Jennifer's writing, and this series drew me in from the start.

On a different note, the gods are in this book! I love that. I'm a big mythology fan, so seeing the gods revealed in this book was just awesome. And Hades! I was excited to see that Jennifer views Hades the same way I do in Touch of Death. :) He is one hot god, hot in appearance and in temper. I'm looking forward to seeing more of these gods.

Just for fun: The last line in the summary is about whether love is greater than fate. What do you think?

Writing Sequels and a Giveaway!

With the release of Stalked by Death just under two months away, I thought I'd talk about writing sequels. I also happen to be writing another sequel at the moment, so this is perfect timing.

Sequels are tricky because while you are writing within a series, most publishers want the books to stand on their own. I'm terribly guilty of picking up book two in a series before book one. It happens a lot, so I understand this. The hard part for the author is to make sure you are giving the information needed without info dumping. The best way to make sure is by telling what's needed when it's needed. No one wants to open a book to an entire chapter of recap. One, it's insulting to your reader. Two, it's just plain boring.

The good part about writing a sequel is that you already know the characters really well. It makes them easier to write about. I love getting to delve deeper into the lives of characters I love, and I find the words just come to me.

So that's my two cents on sequels. And I have a giveaway for you. I have a Stalked by Death SWAG pack for one lucky winner. Due to postage costs, I'm going to limit this one to US and Canada. Don't worry though. I'll have more international giveaways soon. Use the rafflecopter form to enter.

What are your thoughts on writing sequels?
