Gail Simone's Blog, page 862

It's funny the previous question was about Scott Lobdell's attitude to fan opinion of him. I never made any secret on my blog that his take on the Teen Titans or Superman is not my favourite but I never attacked him as a person. However three weeks ago or

I have to be blunt here, and we have all done it, responded in anger at some particular comment or poster.

It’s nothing to be proud of, but I also think the only sure way to avoid it is not to respond at all, and that seems a bit of a sad solution.

Gail, for what it's worth ... I miss you over in the CBR forums! Far too many douchebags over there, and I felt like you made any thread you participated in a lot more inviting.

It can be a pretty female-unfriendly place, but I still have mostly fond memories, and a lot of friends there. I just feel like message boards get a little ruined when pros show up in the threads about their own books.

Have you ever read the Elseworlds story JLA: Created Equal? Babs does become a Green Lantern in it. Pretty good one too.

I have not, I’m sure it’s a great story. I’m talking about in canon, I hate to see Bat-characters with power rings and such.

Salutations, m'am! I was curious, when making a movie or television show, do the creators of the show typically consult with the current writers of the comic?

I get calls from producers to pick my brain quite often. Interestingly, it almost always happens after I am no longer on the books. I’ve had calls asking for my ideas about Deadpool, Wonder Woman, and several others.

I would say it’s fairly common, but not routine.

I'm feeling a little hopeless tonight. Marvel is coming out with a book called Fearless Defenders, starring nine female heroes, but of the two preview pages they've released, one is almost entirely Misty Knight breaking her back to show her boobs and butt.

Okay, I haven’t seen the preview images, so I may be totally off-base, but believe me, as someone who has had her female-power scripts drawn with achingly goofy hypersexualized art more than once…

…I have some faith in this book. People who I really trust are saying it’s very, very good. And the cast is wonderful.

I am afraid to look at the art after what you’ve said here, but hopefully it’s just a preview thing. The truth is, the first issue of any new project, the writer and artist are REALLY just figuring out how to work together and what the tone will be. Sometimes it goes awry.

But I have some faith that the book will self-correct, based on what I am told from insiders.

So, I am hopeful. Cross your fingers!

I think we readers owe you people a common courtesy called respect. I worked in a public service's customer's office and I know what it is to be called names on a daily basis, for no reason other than being the visible face. I've sworn never do that to oth

I understand, but…I just strongly feel that readers shouldn’t have to censor themselves on the chance that some thin-skinned writer, say, like ME, should decide to drop by.

Message boards that are intended for readers should be reader spaces, I think, unless the creators are actually invited. Then, I think a minimum of civility is to be expected.

I just have seen it happen a thousand times, readers are talking, doing their thing. The pro drops in and immediately people take sides and the critics are shamed just for having an opinion, the boosters are called brown-nosers, it’s awful.

I agree that readers in most message board spaces should try to be respectful of each other, if possible, but I don’t think they owe creators anything, really.

Scott Lobdell describes his experience of reading an online comic forum on his Facebook Page, particularly he mentions a style of posting which he believes discourages people from participating in the discussion. What advice can you give to all involved so

My opinions on this have changed a lot. I used to frequent message boards a lot, and I would “correct” mistakes readers would say about my work on places like Scans Daily and CBR and elsewhere. Sometimes it would get dramatic and even angry.

And then I just realized I was being a douche.

Readers need to have places to give their opinions. They shouldn’t have to worry that some over-sensitive writer is going to drop by and try to shame them or act like a goddamn hall monitor. The readers don’t owe us politeness in their own spaces. And we shouldn’t intrude with big stompy boots and suck all the air out of the room.

If you are INVITED to a forum to chat, sure, I guess it’s fair to ask people to be polite. Otherwise, screw it, those spaces belong to readers.

No forum owes Scott or me or any writer anything. If they want a frank discussion, have at it and enjoy yourself.

Like I say, I used to be one of THE most intrusive pros in that way. I really regret it. Scott shouldn’t worry about this stuff, I don’t think. It’s not in our authority to try to control how readers react or converse about our books in any way.

Reviews, invited chat sessions, that stuff is a little different. But what readers say and how is their business.

Do you think Barbara would make a good Green Lantern? If yes, would you like to write her as one?

Truthfully, with very, very few exceptions, I don’t like to see the bat-characters with major superpowers. I just think it makes them less interesting all the way around.

I am Dragonbor-oh wait, that's not real life: Batgirl Annual Review (by me!):

nikerek:

Writing: Gail Simone

Art: Admira Wijaya

Pencils: Daniel Sampere

Batgirl Annual is an impressive book from cover to cover. I recommend this to anyone looking for a little realism in their caped hero. I’ve really been enjoying this Batgirl run written by Gail Simone, and she doesn’t…

Reblogging for the kind words about the wonderful artists on this book, Admira and Daniel. GREAT artists and wonderful collaborators!
