Hi, Ms Simone. I'm doing a project for college on how comic books are an important art form in society and I was wondering if I could do an e-mail interview with you?
I am sorry, very sorry, but I get SO many requests for school project interviews that I have to turn them all down. To do a good job would take hours every day (I get about thirty such requests a week).
I’m very sorry. If you have a question or two, you can ask them here and if I can, I’ll answer them publicly.
Spoiler Culture
We live in a world where people want to see the sausage being made.
I understand, I have some of that myself, but now we want transparent casings on EVERYTHING. We want to see the works, we want to see the gears move.
Even with our very favorite media and storytellers, we like the previews, we read the advance reviews, we download the trailers that we KNOW will spoil the ending.
It’s interesting. Do you ever find knowing too much in advance ruins things? I went out of my way to not know what was going to happen in the Avengers and the Hobbit, and I think it really made me enjoy those films more fully.
Companies now guard story elements like they were CIA secrets, and people still leak them, there are still gossip sites, there are things like the sneak peeks from furtive cameras on Ain’t It Cool and elsewhere.
Do you think it detracts from the experience of reading or seeing a story, or does it simply keep enthusiasm high?
I’ve seen many absolute meltdowns over a bad trailer, or a preview that is misleading. People FREAK THE HELL OUT sometimes, only to have the movie or book go in another direction entirely.
What do you think…spoilers or no?

Batgirl’s Boot by Chris...
Something just occurred to me: do you know anything about how the DC #0's that came out in September are going to be collected in trade form? It would be kind of odd to put them in the normal trades, since they take place before all the other stuff.
I honestly don’t know…but I would love to see a big volume like that #1 collection. That thing was massive, but kind of beautiful!
EDITED TO ADD: I am informed that there IS a big huge zero issue book collection already, AND that the zero issues will all end up in their respective tpbs, as well. WOOT!
Wow, beautiful art, AND a nice simple costume design!

There she goes again with another PERFECT BATGIRL COSPLAY SHOOT!
Amazing, that girl.
As a comic book writer, you have so much power to change the things you don't like. Have you ever regretted writing something, and then vetoed it later on?
I don’t usually regret stories that much later, but I do have one that I wish I’d handled differently.
It was the Savant/Creote fake-their-own-death sequence in Birds of Prey. It turned out not to be true, it was an elaborate con, but the story itself echoed some tropes and some real world concerns about lgbtq people committing suicide, especially with guns.
It wasn’t intentional, but that’s always a shitty excuse. Because the reveal wasn’t until next issue, people thought for a solid month that I’d had the only gay cast member of Bop shoot himself on camera, particularly because of the loss of his only love, who at that time, was perceived as straight.
Because I knew it wasn’t true, that they were both alive and scamming Oracle, I thought none of the sensitivity that should have been in place there applied. People I really respect and even love pointed this out to me but I didn’t really get it.
I think you can cover even very uncomfortable stuff in stories. I think you can talk about even very horrible things, and it can actually be helpful. But this wasn’t any of that, it was just a plot twist that could have been handled many other different ways that didn’t follow this trope.
That’s the scene that I wish I’d written way differently.

In other words, I’ve finally got around to posting my Ragdoll photoset. Still ridiculously proud of this costume. It was a ton of fun going around as Ragdoll, though I’d really like to wear him to a convention where more than five people will recognize me XD
Ragdoll is (and made by) me! Pictures thanks to this person over yonder.

Oh, weeeell, if Ragdoll freaks you out, I rescind my suggestion of reading Secret Six. »;; But he’s adorable and steals an original Robin costume and dons it spectacularly! …and there are lesbians. But uhhh, Ragdoll does this shit allll the time so. Oops?
Ragdoll isn’t scary, shatteredclocks. …Well, okay, he kind of is. But he’s also a loving monkeyparent.

Few things bring as much joy to my heart as great Ragdoll cosplayers. And this is GREAT!
Fantastic!

In the Flashpoint story apparently Barbara was never born, if she was how would you think her life would be different with Thomas Wayne being Batman?
This is embarrassing, but I never read Flashpoint.
