His husband and partner of 21 years, John Arthur, died of complications from ALS while they were fighting for their home state of Ohio to recognize the validity of their marriage (which took place in Maryland). The Obergefell case centers on Jim’s right to be recognized on his terminally-ill husband’s death certificate. That’s John in the photo. Jim is still carrying it on CNN right now.
