I love this.
Comics to Read 1/13: A Wonderful New Year
Greetings comics fans, my apologies for the absence - it has been a stressful and illness filled month or so. Today I bring you some comics that you may want to pick up including a delicious gulp of water in the sometimes desert of Wonder Woman in comics.

There’s this weird dynamic in comics right now where the direct to floppy Wonder Woman comics are mostly cringeworthy and the digital first comics that feature her are good - Sensation, Bombshells and now this. Today Rae DeLiz’s digital first The Legend of Wonder Woman arrives in floppy form and it is very good. DeLiz’s art work on The Magic Unicorn and her self published Peter Pan have shown her ability to have a magic touch for fantasy. Those of you who remember her concept art of Amethyst know she was born to draw a “princess warrior” This time DeLiz is also doing the writing and the result is one of the most delightful Wonder Woman comics in years. There are some twists and turns to the Wonder Woman origin but for Wonder Woman fans who have looking for a return to the classic Amazon, this is it. Pick it up.

Technically not a first issue but definitely the first in this arc. I love the kids from Gotham Academy and here we have some of our favorite writers (Hello Dustin Nguyen) and teams joining in the fun. Come on, Maps is begging you to buy this - you can’t out last that girl!

Dynamite handed Red Sonja over to Gail Simone for a fun run and now Red Sonja is back in the hands of Marguerite Bennett who also is handling Angela for Marvel. And like Angela, Red Sonja has been given an updated costume. Thankfully she still has the same fun, kick ass personality. Win!

Speaking of Gail Simone her Leaving Megalopolis which broke Kickstarter records is back with a sequel from Dark Horse. Simone excels at team books filled with people who are good at being bad and off the grid of other comic leads. Oh let’s just say twisted and weird, but in a good way.

Just the queer bodice ripping horror book you were waiting for. I wasn’t provided this second issue but I was given a copy of the first and it was pretty horrible BUT IN A GOOD WAY. Again this is Marguerite Bennett along with Ariela Kristantina on art.
Ugh, Choices. It’s always hard in comics to support comics by creators who have a tendency to wear their asshat A LOT like the writer of this Max Landis. I won’t waste too much space detailing his last round of asshatery (okay Rey=Mary Sue). But Joelle Jones is doing great art her and, damn, if this isn’t one of the best Superman comics I’ve read in awhile. Ugh, Choices.

That’s it for me this week. What’s on your list?
Can’t wait to read some of these!
Thanks for the kind words about SURVIVING MEGALOPOLIS and RED SONJA (for which I got to pass the baton to the amazing MARGUERITE BENNETT!).

SO, the first six issues of SURVIVING MEGALOPOLIS form one...

SO, the first six issues of SURVIVING MEGALOPOLIS form one amazing monster image, seen here for the first time.
I am so proud of this book. LEAVING MEGALOPOLIS was a TREMENDOUSLY huge hit book, and every con since, nearly every DAY since, both myself and co-creator/artist Jim Calafiore have been inundated with people wanting more.
This is it. It starts tomorrow.
From Dark Horse.
:)
Do you have a particular way of keeping track in your stories of plots, relationships, character developments, etc?
I do take extensive notes, but also, I read and re-read previous issues repeatedly while working on a story, to make sure that every thread leads somewhere. It’s very easy with a large cast to neglect some small seed you planted, notes or not. Re-reading is essential for me.

New Wonder Woman and friends dolls and action figures hit the toy shelves! Happy 2016!
*makes all the grabby hands ever*
Yesterday a quest came upon me to buy as many female super hero dolls and action as I can get my hands on. I am on this quest for the young girls I work with at the library and with Girl Scouts I CONSTANTLY hear that they can’t like or do something because it is a boy thing. Or it isn’t for girls. I’m especially interested in the action figures that are just like “boy” action figures. But I know these will appeal to girls.
I want them all!
What's your reaction to the Angouleme kerfuffle?
Complicated.
I’m not hugely familiar with the award, I don’t even pay that much attention to awards I am up for as a rule.
There are a lot of things. I think it was a really decent impulse for so many male creators to withdraw in a show of solidarity with women creators. I never like to throw cold water on anyone doing a thing for the sake of kindness, decency, or fairness.
At the same time, I feel bad for those guys. Regardless of gender, they all obviously deserve their nominations, and it sucks that they felt they had to withdraw for reasons of ethics. I also am not sure what the fix is. I think the process is a quite likely broken, it’s ridiculous that someone like Linda Barry isn’t nominated, just off the top of my head.
But I don’t know what the organization does to fix it this year. Do they start over? That doesn’t seem fair to the people nominated. And who wants to be nominated under protest? I don’t think I would accept such an award nomination (not that one was coming), it feels like doing so would dishonor the guys who withdrew out of a sense of fairness.
I think maybe it may be best to do this year with the remaining nominations, admit that the process likely needs reviewing, and try to make next year better.
Sometimes, there’s a flaw in the concrete of the dam, and at first, the water still holds. But as the years go by and the water level rises, flaws in the concrete become bigger and bigger. So you either do a patch or you blow it up and start over. You can’t just go on pretending.
My approach is to assume everyone meant well, no one was intentionally evil or bigoted. That doesn’t mean the process hadn’t gone awry…it’s almost impossible to look at who achieved what in comics this year, internationally, and still not manage to include one woman in the balloting. For sales, women CRUSHED on the graphic novel charts, particularly outside of the Diamond Distribution system. Women had hugely successful international hits. Women had critical monster successes. And there are women who are still producing astounding work even when they started in darker times (again, see Linda Barry).
Something smells wrong. I am not accusing anyone of evil intent. I suspect it is not that. But it’s very easy to have a person select a nominating committee who is a bit behind the times. It happens.
To restore the good name of the award, I think they should consider taking a serious look at their selection process, include some people who have a wider reading experience, and let it go from there. It could fix itself quite handily in a year or two.

Okay, I asked CLEAN ROOM genius artist for a cool outfit Astrid’s Mueller could wear if she was giving one of her motivational speeches. This is what he came up with (with help from his fashion-savvy wife).
We have been getting endless letters from people who have a crush on Astrid (and Killian, and Chloe), and as of now, I AM JOINING THEM. GOOD LORD.
Amazing job, Jon!
Thanks for making this manipulative cult leader so impossibly hot!

Getting to physically hold my cosplay variant...

Getting to physically hold my cosplay variant cover for the first time. I’m overwhelmed with emotions. To everyone who ever cheered me on, thank you. To everyone who ever felt discouraged by bullies, told that their features were ‘too Black’ to cosplay, don’t give up. Don’t you ever let them make you feel like you’re not good enough. You’re beautiful and you can do anything. We can be heroes too.
YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
